Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Let's Try this again, Academy for 2011

My testing generally includes playing the classics: Storm, Ichorid, Nine Spheres, R/G aggro, Pschatog, etc... anything I can play against really. Some tests go better than others, my Academy build is really volatile in its hand play so I am currently trying use of Intuition , at 4 copies, neutering some of the tech in the deck.

I plan on testing against it tomorrow, until then I see what you mean with expedition map, it is good, I don't really worry about counterspells, most people will let you get the crop rotation off fearing other spells more. Time Spiral is my win most of the time. I added a mind over matter recently just to try it again, not too much help other than to pitch to force early game. I also added 2 frantic search's, I like the untap ability a lot when you get going. I'll post back tomorrow after testing your build.

Haven't had a chance to reply recently, I yanked scepter, the white source problem is apparent. The Vault/ Key combo works pretty well, but with limited tutoring doesn't fire all the time. I like your list for U/B academy, seems good. And to the guy who commented about reset, I had thought about that in previous years, but slots are getting tight, tried turnabout too a number of times, just didn't pan out. Currently I am just running the splash green for crop rotation and fastbond, it seems good. The versions of academy people will see at Richmond Comix will all be different, I have arranged a group of players who are interested in teaming up to make some waves. Just thought I'd let yal know. Furthermore, I like the crucible idea with fastbond, it seems good in this build, now to find a slot....

Thanks for your input, Candelabra is kinda important in my opinion but I'll try it your way. I like Blue Sun's Zenith which is why I may switch from stroke. Basic Lands are good, I understand where you're coming from, with Wasteland out there it helps a lot. I tried multiple mox diamonds but land flood was a problem at 18, though diamond helps I didn't want too many useless mana sources. I wanted to work div top into the deck but couldn't justify a slot really, I may try again. Thanks again for your input, also, I forgot to include Fastbond in my list somewhere I was running one card less, can't tell what slot though, until I break the deck down again. The Fastbond was crucially important to replaying Academy or dropping extra artifact lands to get the artifact count up higher, quicker. Again I appreciate your opinion

Here's my academy list, this deck has been revised for over 5 years into what it is now, you may see it at Richmond Comix events coming soon, as well as Star City if they ever do another vintage tournament. First a little background on me, I was top 8 at Cary Cup in North Carolina, with Flash. Also, when star city was running vintage tournaments, I played a flash/ board grindstone deck and stomped for several rounds. I've been playing magic since I was 12 and will accept little criticism on this deck, just thought I'd post my brainchild.
Maindeck:
Manajin: 5 moxen Black Lotus Sol Ring Grim Monolith Mox Opal Mana Vault Lotus Petal Mox Diamond
Counter: 4 Force of Will
Draw: Ancestral Recall 3 Meditate 3 Impulse 4 Time Spiral 2 Frantic Search Timetwister
Other Artifacts: 2 Scroll Rack 2 Candelabra of Tawnos 1 Helm of awakening Blightsteel Colossus Bounce: 2 Capsize
Search: Tinker Mystical Tutor 4 Crop Rotation
Win: 2 Stroke of Genius
Land: 4 Seat of Synod 4 Tree Of Tales 1 Boseiju Who Shelters All 1 Strip Mine 1 Tolarian Academy 1 Tolaria West 1 Petrified Field 1 Minamo, School at Water's Edge
The basic win for the deck is create infinite mana by bouncing the Candelabra of tawnos to your hand, replaying for free or 1 (depending upon whether or not you have helm on the board) and with 8-9 artifacts un-tapping Academy and Minamo to Stroke the opp. for game. The annoyance of a twenty minute turn through 4 time spirals is enough to make most weak players scoop. I've done thousands of games of testing, and now with Blightsteel the win ratio is much higher. The deck can be inconsistent some days, but it's a lot of fun to play all the time. I will rep academy until the day I die, thanks for your time....

Hi everybody, I attended this event as well and took my version of Bomberman. Here's the List:
4 Trinket Mage 4 Auriok Salvagers 4 Silence 5 Moxen Black Lotus Lotus Petal Mana Vault Sol Ring Ancestral Recall Ponder Brainstorm 4 Spell Pierce 3 Daze 2 Force of Will Capsize 3 aether spell bomb
1 Tolaria West 1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All 1 Strip Mine 1 Tolarian Academy 2 Misty Rainforest 4 Tundra 6 Island 6 Plains
My Results were pretty poor, 1/1 drop because I had to go to work. My first opponent was Merfolk, he put up a good game, I went 0 -2. Second match , Iona Oath Key combo. Game 2 I name Oath with a Pithing Needle, stupid play I know. Lost 2-0 to him.
Nice turnout for the store, more folks should come, The meta is not like a star city 5K or anything but it's a good random match most of the time it looked like. I saw some Fish Builds, 1 Welder, 1 Goyf, Merfolk, 2 Oath Vault, Knights???, and a guy who said next time Ichorid would show up

I was sitting beside Menedian at a Star City Games 10 proxy and him playing Gro Atog against FLash while I was playing Flash VS Flash distracted me, I forgot to put my life counter on top of my deck, to remind me to pay 5 mana for my Pact of Negation, I could have won my game and moved on but I drew my card for turn without paying and lost.... big suck

maindeck is the following:
4 chalice of the void 4 serum powder
4 Golgari Grave-troll 4 Stinkweed Imp 4 Golgari Thug 4 Narcomoeba 4 Ichorid 1 Ancestor's Chosen 1 Flame-Kin Zealot 1 angel of despair 1 river kelpie
4 bridge from below 4 leyline of the void
1 darkblast
4 cabal therapy 3 dread return 3 unmask
4 bazaar of baghdad 3 windswept heath 1 bayou 1 dryad arbor
i know i wanna have 3 wooded foothills and a tropical island in my side, but wut is recommended for the other 11 cards? chain of vapor, emerald charm, reverent silience, oxidize, contagion seem pretty standard, but how much of what? also, wut do u side out? if u can give me some pointers about easy siding techniques, that would b awesome. thanks.
Look bub, you need some help first of all the serum powder in main is something I've seen like 2 people do because you have to remove kill conditions if you f it up. Reverent Silence main board would surprise the crap out of anyone, but it's wasted slots. I like Oxidize personally, that's all I have to say about that. Contagion and Emerald Charm big no's. Chain yes, all the way. And try sideboarding in City of Brass, to handle the color issues.

I see why we sat beside each other in Richmond, you come up with good ideas, but your list and my list are very different my brother. Your's is molded to the formats needs, mine just wants to kill you with as little disruption as possible. How about this for a sideboard: 3 Hurkyl's Recall 4 Leyline of the Void 3 Shattering Spree Yawgmoth's Will Yawgmoth's Bargain 1 Rebuild 2 In the Eye of Chaos

to make that deck work you probably want Therapy and Dark Rits. Your mana base will also be stronger with more fetches and less duals.
Not to commandeer the thread, I have a proxied version of this deck, it almost mana gins too much for use, other than to hardcast a force that is, but besides that I find getting Dream Halls out easy, and the searching to be the hardest part with a mostly colorless hand, or lack of a hand after dropping so many cards.

I had the same thought for this deck check it out:
I hear this makes most decks better....but honestly, if you're gonna do that isn't playing dream halls kinda a waste?
Fixed that 3 black lotus thing, guess I missed that. I think Dream Halls is good as multiple copies, just to ensure you can pitch something to Force or when Dream Halls is out, to Cruel or Conflux

I had the same thought for this deck check it out:
4 Academy Rector 1 Flash 4 Dream Halls 4 Conflux 4 Violent Ultimatum 4 Cruel Ultimatum 5 moxen 1 Black Lotus Sol Ring Mana vault Mana crypt Brainstorm Mystical Tutor Enlightened Tutor Wheel of Fortune Demonic Tutor Vamp Tutor Imperial Seal Merchant Scroll 4 Force of Will Gush
4 Tropical Island 4 Underground Sea 4 Tundra 4 Volcanic Island 1 Polluted Delta
Guess how it works, Flash in Rector Search out Dream Halls Pitch anything to anything, and opponent goes ouch

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Insider Trading - Are Proxies Hurting Vintage Tournament Atten

Wow a lot of argument over such a silly topic.... I would have to say that proxies are there for the player who can't afford power and the player who owns it but doesn't want to damage it. A cap on proxies would be nice, 5 max in my opinion... SCG does a good job organizing their tournaments here in Richmond. At the last event I played I competed against several players using real power and running proxies for the pieces they didn't have. I sat next to Menendian too BTW!! OMG he was playing Growatog and battling Flash... But seriously folks, if you want to blame someone for playing vintage, or messing up a tournament scene make it the good players and not the proxies. You just don't want to face the power of a good player, not the card you wish you could afford. And PS I didn't read the article cause I'm not premium, so myah

Eternal Formats / Creative / Paul Mastriano's Perfect Storm
|
on: January 20, 2009, 10:19:37 pm
|
|
Paul Mastriano's storm is very similar to a deck I built 2 years ago and wrote down so I could always rebuild it. I called this work of art "Strain of Thought". At the time I had just discovered the power of Memory Jar in its restricted state. The use of Dark Rituals and Cabal Rituals to power a storm count then using Yawgmoth's Will to storm out for even more was ingenious. I used Brain Freeze and Tendril's of Agony to both mill and kill. The idea for the deck came to me after my friend Eric showed me how his "Mean-deck Gifts" deck operated. Though my other deck ideas may seem a little out there, this is the one I love the most and have already built several times to accommodate changes in the meta as well as better tech. The turn 1 and 2 capabilities are high, this deck can power its way through turn 2 without worry of disruption. Here's the list, hate on it:
Landbase ------------------------------- 1 Tolarian Academy 2 Island 2 Swamp 2 Underground sea 2 Polluted Delta 2 Volcanic Island 1 Gemstone Mine
Brown ------------------------ 1 Emerald 1 Sapphire 1 Jet 1 Pearl 1 Ruby 1 Black lotus 1 Lotus Petal 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mana Vault 1 Memory Jar 1 Darksteel Colossus
Black ------------------------------- 1 Yawgmoth's Bargain 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Demonic Consultation 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Demonic Tutor 2 Cabal Ritual 2 Tendrils of Agony 4 Duress 4 Dark Ritual
Blue --------------------------------- 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Mystical Tutor 4 Force of Will 4 Brainstorm 2 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Windfall 1 Tinker 1 Brain Freeze 1 Stifle 1 Time Twister
Red --------------------------------- 1 Wheel of Fortune 1 Rack and Ruin
------------------------------------------- Things that changed for my recent rebuild: - 3 brainstorm + 1 merchant Scroll + 2 Meditate -------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's Paul's Deck Main Deck
1 Bloodstained Mire 2 Island 4 Polluted Delta 2 Swamp 3 Underground Sea
1 Darksteel Colossus 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Black Lotus 1 Brainstorm 2 Cabal Ritual 1 Chain of Vapor 4 Dark Ritual 1 Demonic Tutor 4 Duress 1 Fact or Fiction 4 Force of Will 1 Gifts Ungiven 3 Grim Tutor 1 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mana Vault 1 Memory Jar 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Misdirection 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Necropotence 1 Ponder 1 Sol Ring 1 Tendrils of Agony 1 Time Walk 1 Timetwister 1 Tinker 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Yawgmoth's Bargain 1 Yawgmoth's Will
The differences are subtle, he utilized Necropotence and Grim Tutor as method of attaining Will or Tendrils. He also used Gifts Ungiven, Fact or Fiction and Time Walk in the blue area for obvious reasons. I guess the point of this is from the stand point of a deck being viable, I think I know how to judge best myself... fact in point being I don't need most of your affirmations on the greatness of my beck building abilities. Please don't poop in my punchbowl again, thanks
