Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Your Waterbury Predictions

1. What do you think the metagame will be consisting of? 2. What person/team do you expect to see in the money? 3. Expecting any NEW decks? any old decks coming back? 4. If Waterbury was tommorow, what would you play? 5. Do you think the results will have a major impact on the metagame for the new year? 6. Do you think the results will impact the boyz at WOTC?
Please note if you will be in attendence. 1. From what I've read about Waterbury in the past, the wide open meta seems likely. 2. Frankly, I don't give a rats ass. 3. Oath. People love it and they have the cards. Trinisphere will be there in force I imagine. It has been getting plenty of press. 4. Stax 5. Dependant on the actual result. 6. Only if there is some skewed T8. Like the aforementioned high Welder / Trinisphere count. Seeing as the tournament is 1280.88 miles (20 hours, 38 minutes) from my house, I don't think I'll be there anytime soon.

A few quick questions on yer SB cards:
Everyone auto-includes Tormod's Crypt. Is this worth boarding in against anything but Dragon? If so vs what and what do you remove for them (4?)
If you already have a bunch of artifact hate in your board, why play Naturalize over Emerald Charm? I can't see bringing in Artifact Mutation + Naturalize + possibly Pulverize.
Blood Moon doesn't really seem to hod the usefullness it did when 4CC was king. REB would be beneficial against a wider range of decks IMO.

Well, I'm a Devil Rays / Lightning / Bucs / Hurricanes fan... so in general I hope the NL wins the world series. I can't route for a team in our division, much less ANY team from NY. Fuck NY, their 3rd baseman costs more than our whole team. I hope Boston beats NY and loses in 7 in the WS. It hurts more that way Baseball is horribly slow; they need to make the game faster. MLB could make it more of a pitcher's game and less of a hitters game by raising the mound a bit for example. This would get you out of a game a good 1/2 hour faster. Retraction is also a good idea. There isnt enough good pitching to go around.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Margin of Error and Joe Random/Joe Awesome

Ok, It helps if you know that I'm an Industrial Engineering student. What that means is time studies, experiments and their data are my kin at school. That said...
This is MUCH more complicated than that which is presented. What you are after is a statistical model of a deck that can predict, with a degree of certainty, the outcome of a deck's games. Of course that can only be done provided copious data (which we dont have) and statistical knowhow. You do have the basics down. (In all honesty I didn't read and validate the math, but the idea is valid)
In reality you have many factors that contribute to the actual values you are after. They can be put into the model provided they can be measured. Even playskill could be measured (thats another study in and of itself... sigh).
And for those of you who are weary of practical statistics, the buisness world, military, and manufacturing sector effectively uses them constantly. The are a valuble tool when a facto of error is involved that can't be taken out with a robust experiment.
Any questions?

Eternal Formats / Creative / Why would WotC waste time working with T1?

Killing T1 might kill YOUR store, but all the local stores here survive on T2. The sale of packs for draft and for T2 players greatly outweighs the sale of single cards. Other games such as Vs, Warhammer, Hero Clicks, D&D books, board games etc all contribute to the store's sales.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / What impact will Crucible of Worlds have on the metagame?

My previous post where I obviously took out "Black Vise" from the context was just a jumping point for everyone to use. Some of the lines didn't apply but i thought the paralle had been made and it would be best to leave it be.
I always tend to take a wait and see attitude when it comes to cards that are not obviously broken (Mind's Desire). If the next few events are led by decks sporting multiple CoW then there might be an arguement. Even then there has to be time to allow the meta to adjust.

CARD is a card so generally effective that many tournament players were willing to include it in their decks, regardless of what the deck's theme or purpose was-the damage it could potentially inflict if played on the first turn was too attractive to ignore. In some cases, players would keep their CARDs sideboarded out if they knew they weren't going first. Since all decks had to plan for them, they completely dominated the Type # tournament landscape.
Vise or CoW?

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discussion-Strategy Issues] How will Fish do at Tier 1?

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" -Sun Tzu Fairly good advice. Playtest difficult matchups. With that said, because Fish is so easy to build, there should be no excuses come GenCon. Test it and adjust. To me the real question is, what beats the deck that beats Fish? With all the high profile writers hyping Fish, there's going to be a ton of it at GenCon. The best deck of the day will be the one who can beat not only Fish, but the "Paragon" reaction deck to a Fish heavy metagame. Since I'm not going... I'll make sure watch tournament coverage.

From my last tourney: Round 3 vs. Dave with Type 2 affinity + Skullclamps
I feel REALLY sorry for this guy. He never saw it coming. He complained about Type 1 the whole rest of the night. I could have tried to counter argue but there was no point.
Game 1: I daze the first 2 things he plays and I let a turn 3 Skullclamp resolve because I have the Null Rod waiting and ready. I play it, and on his turn he tries to tap an artifact land. I inform him of his mana problem and he enters the scoop phase, bitching all the way.
Game 2: Turn 2 Null Rod … sigh … commence scoopage.
3-0
And the bitching never stopped...

"He is taller than I am" ---> "He is taller than I"
It's really just an abbreviation of sorts.
If the word getting used in common practice changes the language, what about "ain't" and "ya'll" ?
Just because its understandable doesn't mean it's correct, no matter how long it gets used. For example, "He be talluh den me"
Just some stuff to chew on.

Wow, a new store in the "Bay" area. I hate that... like there's only 1 bay in the world. Hell I live in Tampa, we have a bay. I think I'll start refering to Tampa as the "Bay Area" to see how many left coasters it confuses.
otherwise-----> Good report!
