1  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: [Lincoln, RI] 9/19 DHG Legacy for a Lotus! on: September 12, 2015, 04:35:40 pm
Hello again  Very Happy

Added additional prize info to the main post.  Will have multiple free side events with an Italian Abyss at 80+ players and a HP Tundra at 100+ players.  Also at 100+ players will be adding prizes to top 16, and that can scale with huge attendance.  At 100+ players 9th - 12th will likely be able to choose between a FTV: Angels or a lower end dual like a Savannah, then 13th-16th will receive whatever they didn't pick.  I'll probably have 4 lower end duals (savannah/badlands/taiga) and 4 from the vaults.  That can also scale so for example at 120+ players I will payout beyond top 16.  Hard to predict the exact turnout I'll get so I don't want to post too many theoretical prizes, but I expect to payout to at least top 16 as I believe we'll be hitting over 100 players.

I rented an additional room a few doors down and will be steering players there for registration before the event starts, so don't panic if you don't initially get into the main room (the store) because the event will be run out of both rooms and players will be bounced around throughout the day between pairings and side events in both rooms.  There will be refreshments/AC/bathrooms in both rooms.  The additional room I rented is very nice (and I have to keep it that way :p) and will be full staffed all day.  I'll be popping in and out of both rooms myself as well.

Obviously with an event of this caliber it will be competitive, but I do expect everyone to be respectful to their opponents at all times.  My judge staff is top notch and includes many judges I've used at my past PTQ's that were very large in attendance.  I'm treating this event on that level.  Obviously I expect no cheating or counterfeit cards and we will be vigilant in looking out for that, but one of the reasons I chose Legacy for this format was the professionalism in which the players have exhibited in my Buncha Duals events over the years and I expect this weekend to be no different.

I will do everything in my power to make sure the event is run smoothly and people have a good time.  Doors open at 11am, I suggest arriving no later than 12:30pm.  You must bring your own way to keep track of life whether that's dice or pen.  The event will be starting at 1pm.  Please don't call me to tell me you're running late as I won't be able to help.  If you show late at best you'll receive a game/match loss, at worst I won't be able to enter you at all.  I've never turned anyone away in my near 10 years of running events and I don't expect to, but showing up early guarantees this.

Looking forward to this Saturday as I've never given away a prize this big and the reception so far has been stellar.  See you 9/19  Smile

More updates: Doors now open at 11am!  Added link for constructed decklists that can be filled out ahead of time if possible.

Registration will be done in both rooms.  Refreshments also available in both rooms and staff will be present in both rooms at all times.  This is all moot if we get under 100 players :p  But I'm taking no chances and expecting a very large turnout, hence my renting the additional space next door and planning to run the event out of both simultaneously (and it also has AC/restrooms).

Should be a very fun day and we have alot of side events planned as well!  Hope you'll join us on 9/19!   Surprised

Hello  Surprised  Big update, we now have seating for up to 150 players comfortably as we were able to secure an additional room on the property a few doors down.  We're expecting a huge turnout for this and should now be able to seat all who show.  But still recommend coming early.  Doors open at 11:00am.  Hope you'll join us on 9/19!   Very Happy

@Serracollector: That is indeed a long ride!  But thank you for the support either way!  Smile

Changed 9th - 12th to from the vault: Angels as I advertised a wee bit more MM2015 than I realized I actually had :p
Also added a free side event for an Italian Abyss!  Both these things happen at 80 or more players.  Given the interest this event already has, I believe we'll breeze by that number.

Hope to see you 9/19!

Bill Copes is probably my favorite vintage player of all time.

Glad to hear he's up and about.

So you don't need to pay for the con to play in the tournaments?

As far as my tournaments go, you get a badge for my events when you sign up for either one (or both).

I have an agreement set in place that anyone showing up to play in either 1k event Sat or Sunday simply has to pay the entry fee and they get a badge.  My standard is $25 and my sealed is $35.  You can show up for either and simply pay that cost and you're in.

Again, if you pre-reg for both of my events you're also covered for other Magic events on the weekend.  That $60 gets you into pretty much everything besides drafts and you'd get $5 store credit good at either of our stores.

If you are looking to play in events besides mine, I don't know how the cost/badge breakdown works.  You'd have to ask Grant.
whitecrow@templecon.org is his e-mail.

@Farias- I agree Grant is a good guy.  That's why I chose to run at his venue.  He's definitely going to have some vintage during the weekend.  I know he plans on doing an event specifically for people that visit this site.

Templecon should be alot of fun.  I've been to them in the past as a player and I'm looking forward to it now as a TO.

I had pictures from the event, but for some reason my camera's plug-in device ceases to be recognized by any computer I plug it into.  ;(

22 People was lower than I was aiming for, but I still gave everything out save the From the Vaults.  Needed 30 people to give those out, but still paid out to 5th-8th anyway despite barely being able to cover costs of top 4.  5th-8th got store credit and a bunch of pickable goodies.  Wish my camera worked so I could show you :p

The Die Hard Games good man of the tourney award goes to: Bill Copes

Prior to the event I did not realize Bill recently had major surgery.  He still made the trek down with his wife driving to come play. That meant alot to me.  Thank you Bill and get better soon.  <3

Future Vintage: Going to be a while before I personally run one again, but that's only because it takes me a while to get prizes.  I have a boatload of eternal on the horizon, including weekly $5 legacy with first place receiving dual lands.  Re-opening on Thursdays for that.

There is upcoming vintage in the area at Templecon Feb 4th-6th.  The event's Organizer, Grant Garvin (also owner of The Temple Games), has told me there will definitely be Vintage events run by him most likely on Friday the 4th.  I will actually be there Feb 5th and 6th running these bad boys:

That should be a fun filled weekend for anyone who goes.  Templecon is in their 6th year and growing into one of the largest gaming conventions in the country.  Magic event badges for the entire weekend are available at Templecon.org for $60.  If you pre-reg it gets you into both my $1k events plus most of the other magic events being run by other TO's.  I know Vintage is covered under the badge.

You can also just show on site and pay for individual events that you want to play in at no extra cost, but pre-reg on the website gets you $5 store credit good for use at either my store or The Temple Games.

Anyway enough plugging of that :p  I had a good time at this past Eternal Weekend.  I think everyone that came did as well.  At least, that's my hope.

Congrats again to Brandon Jones on winning and thanks to everyone for your support.

Saint Feinstein's Day!!!... is it here already? really? truly? !!!

It's a festivus for the rest of us :p

Parking is fun.  I suggest back parking lots since the farmer's market has blocked off alot of the front parking.

800 bozos in my halllway.  Ugh.

Will be starting a little late to give people time to park.  People trickling in now.

Jesus Feinstein, that's just about the best damn sales pitch I've ever heard.

"Die Hard Games:  You can't win.   Oh, and Brassman is awful at magic"

Shall I get that engraved on the door?

Look it's not like I took a quote from you and exaggerated it, then put it in my sig to make you look bad.   Very Happy

I'm just having fun.  I wish you and everyone else who attends good luck tomorrow.  I'm expecting a big turnout <3

Thanks as always for the support.

Are you telling me your last two Vintage events were meaningless?!?!?  :O

I don't remember you doing well in them.

Maybe you did, but if I don't remember them it didn't happen.

I also re-create history when I don't want to remember something.  For example, Brassman's only Pro Tour came off him piggy-backing me in a team event.  He did not qualify on his own for a pro tour.

People told me he Q'd for a pt off a GP finals, but that simply didn't happen.  There's no way Brassman could have an individual GP finish higher than me.  It's Brassman.  I do have to give kudos to those people for the very elaborate April Fool's Joke.

Anyway back to things that are actually happening-

Taylor won't be top 8'ing my event, but you can!  It's this Saturday.

Yay.

when is this?

When hell freezes over.

... oh you didn't mean when will Taylor Top 8 a meaningful event and stop taking credit for his teammates?   Wink

Mah event is this weekend.  Looking forward to it.

Thank you the clarification of prize splits here as well as the other link.  Is there another link for discussion of "setting up 5 suitcases"?

That is to say, while I understand the spirit of the rule, I can imagine someone honestly accidentally crossing the line.  Is there perhaps some number limit on amount of individuals we can trade with, or perhaps a limit on the number of bags we can bring?  Like I say, I do understand the principle, but unless you formally define something it does run the risk of uneven enforcement and confusion, and I'd hate to get kicked out for trading just because I don't understand exactly where it crosses over to acting as a dealer.

Trading is fine and actually encouraged at my events.  You don't have to worry about accidentally being mistaken for a suitcase dealer if you don't literally bring a suitcase.  Just bring an acceptable amount of stuff to trade, and please don't buy or sell unless it's with the store.  It's just common sense policy that is identical to venues such as Starcity Games.

For the record, this is SCG's policy:

"While trading is fine, please note that buying/selling cards with anyone except for our authorized dealer(s), or soliciting to do so elsewhere, is strictly forbidden at this event. Failure to obey this rule may result in both the buyer and the seller being removed from the event without refund, and banned from attending future events.  Star City Events also reserves the right to limit the amount of space being occupied by any one individual while trading, and does not allow the use of suitcases, handcarts, luggage carts, etc. to be used for the purpose of transporting excessive amounts of trade stock."
http://forums.starcitygames.com/showthread.php?37358

At my events, I am the dealer.  Basically replace 'Starcitygames' with 'Die Hard Games' and you've got my stance on buying/selling/trading at my store.  You should definitely bring some binders and trade with people.  I don't want you to feel like you're going to get a hood put over your head and wind up in a back alley dumpster for bringing a binder.  :p

I would imagine that if you're not sure whether or not you're crossing a line: you are.

Players know where the line is and when they're crossing it.  The line only gets crossed if you're trying to buy/sell cards with someone other than the store.  You don't 'accidentally' sell cards to someone else.  That kind of dealing interferes with the event and causes alot of strife for the TO, who usually only breaks even on the actual tourney and relies on singles to make additional profit.  Also, personally speaking, for someone else to try and deal cards in my store really makes me a sad panda because I am known for having very reasonable card prices.

When someone rolls in with tons of trade stock and a laptop/suitcase/sherpa, they are actively hurting the TO because they are literally setting up shop in another shop for free.  They are taking money out of the TO's pocket, who in most cases does not actually make money off the actual tournament and rely heavily on being able to buy/sell at their own event.

If the TO finds it not to be worth it to compete with suitcase dealers, sometimes they just give up because it ends up not being worth running the event.  I know that's a big reason why Travis isn't running anything anymore and honestly that's a big loss to New England Vintage.

I've had alot of fun running these in the past and I believe players have always enjoyed playing in my tourneys over the years.  My judge staff is tops and by the time top 8 rolls around, I'll have store credit and cash buyout prices available for all to see.  I also anticipate my buyback prices to be higher than ever because I always base those on attendance and from what I can tell this Eternal Weekend could be one of my highest ever attended weekends Smile

So although it's been focused on more than I expected, I hope people understand why I have the 'no buying/ selling with other players' policy in place at my store.  I just want to be able to run more of these, and that's why the policy is in place.

I just ask that people don't consider breaking my one rule (I sound like Batman :p) and they'll have a great time.

Thanks again for all your support.  I really am looking forward to seeing everyone again =D

Very Happy   Hooraaaay!!!  Very Happy

This makes me so happy.  I'll be attending both days.

Plus I can finally retrieve my red SIGG water bottle.  (If it's no longer there, I understand)

Hi Mr. Snow Smile

I did not realize you were Diakonov, would've said hi to you much earlier.  I can't seem to find your red water bottle that was left here way back, I put it aside and I believe it may have been accidentally disposed of during one of our store cleaning sessions  Sad

I still hold out hope that your water bottle may be found, but I would prepare for the worst.

I appreciate your constant support of my events though and I will make it up to you.

Not a definite but James Hangley might be showing up

This James Hangley?  Who was big pimping at one of my original mox tourneys 5 years ago?  =D

I've also heard rumors of some other characters returning to Eternal Weekend...

and

Perhaps even this adorable Jawa and incredibly ugly Horse will appear

and who could forget...

That's a spewy amateur if I ever saw one.

Of course I can't forget to mention our head judge for the weekend...

The always professional Joe Harrington (yes he's dressed as me :p)

Oh boy.  This tournament.  Oh boy.

Updated prize pictures.  Everything now pictured.  Listed conditions for top 4 prizes.  Everything is in good to great shape except for the library, which has significant play.  An Italian drain compliments this Library as second place prize and I now have a picture of it.  The drain in fantastic shape.  The mox is in good shape with some wear, but not a whole lot.

The from the vaults are unopened, but the corners sting like you wouldn't believe as I cut myself positioning them for photos ... I walk through hot coal to run these :p

Anywho the event is shaping up nicely and I picked up some things to setup for future vinatge events already.  We'll see how this one goes but if everything happens as planned I'll be ready to run another vintage event immediately after this one.   Wink

I'm still plotting for the weekend but it's a rare untouched one as far as events on the east coast.  Not a whole lot going on and even if you live outside of New England I think Eternal Weekend would be worth the trip for any vintage/legacy enthusiast who can make it.

Literally the entire weekend is planned around these and I believe they won't disappoint.  I believe this will be our biggest Eternal Weekend ever, and we've had some doozies Smile

Thanks again for the support see you Dec 18th-19th

This thread got interesting really quickly, didn't it?  Very Happy

Went to SCG's legacy 5k on Sunday and received many inquiries about Eternal Weekend.  Which to be honest threw me off guard and made me very excited.

Actively working on making the tourneys the best they can possibly be.  Already switched out 4 badlands for 4 trops in the legacy prize pool.  Thanks to Alex Serena of Starcity Games for assisting with that particular prize upgrade.

The debate that's spawned in my thread about prize splits and non-store/TO's buying out prizes is interesting, but it's a discussion best suited somewhere else.

People know where I stand on it.  I'm a store.  Please don't buy/sell in my store unless it's with me.  Follow that rule and I think you'll have a great time.  My store is a really fun place to play (I am biased :p).

For the most part, vintage players are great and I enjoy hosting tournaments for them.  The ability to host more tournaments hinges on people just respecting that one really simple rule.

I would ask further discussion of the issue of buying/selling in stores stop in my thread from this point on.

*looks at mods*

As for tourney, I'm working on it every day.  I think the last tournaments of 2010 for DHG may be our best.  Wink

Thanks for continued support.

That includes players attempting to work out a split with someone other than the store.

I understand what is meant by this, but other players may not.  I encourage you to explain this a little more, so everyone is on the same page about what kinds of prize splits are acceptable at this event, and which aren't.

If you choose to not play out top 4 and do a 4 way split, the only way that's possible is by dealing with the store.  If top 4 chooses to play it out, I'm giving out prizes as normal.  That means you have to play it out.  What people do with the prizes they win after they win them is their business... but the store is the only outlet players are allowed to receive cash/credit for splits from.

It's all pretty straightforward.  If people in top 4 ending up wanting to split that's fine, but they have to go through the store to do it.

I really, really would like to stop talking about this now.  :p

I was eyeballing that date, but I'd rather play than run an event anyways.  Just to be clear, it's fine if the Top 4 decides to keep the prizes instead of selling them back to you, right?

No one is forced to sell back to the store.

...But what happened last time was unacceptable.  Top 4 literally didn't play, took prizes and sold to you for basically the same price I offered.

I didn't really want to go into that here, but you brought it up.

Eric you are a dealer.  I am a store.  If you're in my store, you need to be able to respect my one very simple and reasonable rule of not buying/selling to other players.  I looked the other way the past times this rule has been violated.

I will not look the other way anymore.  Anyone attempting to buy/sell at any point during the weekend will be asked to leave.  That includes players attempting to work out a split with someone other than the store.

If you find that to be unreasonable, just don't show up.

I want to run more of these in the future... but if I'm forced to compete with others for the right to buy back my own prizes it causes complications in doing that.

This is not something you want to press me on.  Just please respect the rule and we won't have any trouble.
Again, if it's going to be an issue for you or you don't agree with my stance on it, just don't show up.

That's really the last I'd like to discuss of it in this thread.  You can talk to me in PM if you want to further discuss it.

Would highly recommend looking at the albums if you have never been to my store and are wondering about the atmosphere.  We have a good time.

Would also recommend looking at the albums if you have been to my store, since it's been so long since I held vintage and maybe you wanted to refresh your memory of what a great time you had :p

I am thrilled to end Die Hard Games 2010 with Eternal Weekend once again.

They are among my favorite events and I believe anyone who attends will have a great time.

Thanks again,

Hey Dave just one more question:
I was wondering if I could bring my 5 suitcases full of trades and set up shop in your shop?

Please don't try to buy/sell with other players at my store.  Trading with other players is welcome in my store, but all buying and selling must be done through the actual store (me :p)

I enjoy running Vintage in my store and many people remember me for playing in and running Vintage Events.  It's an open secret that I held off on running Vintage in my store for so long because they were the only group of players who were constantly violating my 'no buying/selling to other players' policy.  It was so bad that at my last Vintage event, top 4 literally sold my prizes to another dealer in the room for the same price I offered.  This disappointed me greatly and set back a good 3-4 months of being able to run Vintage at my store.

Not coincidentally, New England experienced a dearth of quality vintage events this year.  I want to run more Vintage in the area.  I really do.  I enjoy running Vintage very much and many of my good friends play mainly that format.  I sincerely ask that if you plan on attending Eternal weekend that you please adhere to that one very reasonable and basic rule of my store. I have among the lowest prices in the country for singles and am able to maintain those low prices based on doing lots of buying/selling with the players who come to my events.

If you believe that you will not be able to avoid buying/selling with other players, please do not attend Eternal Weekend.

It may not look like it when I'm busy dealing with 50-60 players at once, but I know everything that goes down in and around my store.  If anyone is found buying/selling singles on the premises (this includes the parking lot), you will be asked to leave immediately and risk losing prize if you are still in the event.  I absolutely hate putting that clause there, but it needs to be done in order to protect my event and the prospect of holding more of them.

OK.  That makes alot of sense when you put it that way.  I will leave my 5 suitcases of binders at home and just bring a reasonable amount of trade.

Thank you for your understanding.

Good thread.  Brings up alot of valid issues with why, as one TO put it to me bluntly in a recent PM, 'New England is no longer the epicenter of Vintage.'

Vintage is really the only popular format of Magic that still is a whole lot like the Wild West.

What I mean by that is it has a different set of rules that really no other format abides by and you basically have to structure your tournaments around those rules or face various forms of retribution.

For years New England Vintage was extremely cliquey.  Players and even TO's had their own little clubs and you either played ball with them and their set of rules, or you were not considered a legitimate part of the community.  Travis, for all his outspoken-ness, is a perfect example of a good guy just wanting to hold good events but historically faced opposition from other area TO's for his lack of willing to play politics.

I had my own share of political struggle with other area TO's a couple years back.  Before I had a store and just ran events out of other peoples stores, I decided to let a player into my events who was banned from other area vintage tournaments.  This was uncomfortable for me as it forced me to pick a side and either ban this player as they did, or allow him into my events.  I chose the latter since he was not on the DCI's suspended player list.

In fairness it's nearly impossible to get anyone banned in vintage if it's not assault or theft since the tournaments are almost all universally un-sanctioned, and said player had a reputation for shenanigans, but having a reputation and actually being caught cheating are two entirely different things.  So I chose the latter and allowed him into my tournaments several years back since he was not actually suspended officially by the DCI.

It was not a fun period of time for me because it forced me to pick a side.  The whole vintage scene back then was very political and the climate for a new TO was hostile since you either played ball with a certain set of TO's or chose to do your own thing.

Anyway, I bring up the clique-ness that New England Vintage had in the past because I personally feel it greatly hurt the longevity of tournaments in the region.  The last thing you want to do is alienate players, nevermind large groups of them.  It's my belief that the political aspect of running/attending tournaments in New England hurt the scene more than anything.

Flashforward to present day and there is no political vintage scene in New England.  There's no vintage scene period.  That prompted me to hold a few vintage events when I became a store owner this past year since there literally were none in New England and I just wanted players to have a couple quality events.

Of course now I have new sets of rules that I'm presented with only in Vintage and that comes with a changing of the times.

There are other areas in the Northeast that now have great vintage scenes and I'm happy for them, but it does however make it hard for me to run events without running afoul of their group of TO's, since they literally book up entire months of vintage and expect others to work around them.  I booked my first tournament in what was a barren New England vintage scene, and people from this other group not in New England just came out of the woodwork giving me grief since it happened to fall on the same day as another tournament in the Northeast.

Despite my first Vintage event being the same day as another event several hours away and both of us having good turnouts, I tried to maneuver around booking future events the same day as those TO's since they were vocal about it and I consider myself to be a reasonable person.  So I did my part and did not book any tournaments in recent months on the same days as those TO's, which left me with very few actual days to run on since I run a host of other events and have to worry about not colliding with actual local stuff like PTQ's.

I originally booked a vintage tournament on my birthday weekend and had announced it here several months ago:

http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=39725.msg554652#msg554652

...But another TO several hours away who had reached out to me in an effort to work together and avoid conflicting dates had decided to book one of his own vintage events on that day.  This was after I had spent the last 2-3 months delicately not booking anything on those dates as a courtesy to this person.

It was here where I realized Vintage is still a very hard climate to run and maintain quality tournaments in because there's still alot of politics involved, just this time it's not strictly limited to New England.

The other giant obstacle I had to overcome this year when running vintage tournaments was acquiring pieces of power consistently.  This directly ties into the only thing that disappointed me in the Vintage events I ran this year:

They were the only events I've run out of the hundreds I've had where some players completely disregarded one of the few rules my store has... No buying/selling amongst players (trading is fine).

One instance in particular distressed me greatly in that players in one of my vintage events top 4 split for cash... except they weren't selling to me.  They decided to sell to another TO/dealer who was present in my store and had made top 4.  I could've basically put the kibosh on the entire situation, but I just didn't want to put a sour note on what had been a great day... so I let this player buyout my top 4 prizes for what was nearly identical to the price I had offered.

That incident made me rethink wanting to run Vintage regularly, because that's the only format where something like that happened in my store.  It affected my ability to run Vintage events consistently because I found myself forced to compete with other individuals who decided to literally setup shop in my store.

Most can probably figure out where I'm headed with this, but I decided to stop running vintage for the time being.

I'll probably do vintage again down the road, but for now I just wish others good luck.

Howdy. Eternal weekend has concluded at my store.  We had 29 for Vintage on Saturday.  This was a strong turnout.  Sunday's Legacy drew 31 people.  There was good crossover from both events.  Everyone seemed happy, which made me happy.  Aww.

The honorable Judge Kird Ape presided over all of the players

Thanks to those who came to either day, and especially those who came to both.  Congrats to Steve and Mike on top 8'ing both days.

Also advance thanks to Tobi for his wonderful site and for putting my decklists on them.

Take care.
