1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Stax and WorkShop Aggro's answers to Empty the Warrens. on: February 21, 2007, 01:03:59 pm
I assume that if you are planning on playing earthquake, that you are going to play rolling earthquake instead?

Also, tabernacle seems really good, but how many would you recommend in the sideboard? Is it worth it to have any main deck in a 5color stax?

It seems like slice and dice might be a little narrow, and that double red for the hardcast is a little harsh for anything except mono uba. Even 5c stax is going to either take some serious pain, or lose some essential gemstone mine counters.

Caltrops
Good against ichorid (ancient grudge might make this less relevant) and also sutured ghoul laughs at this, good in multiples against fish, good against etw unless it gets bounced

Rolling Earthquake
Good against general aggro and good against etw if they don't timewalk combo kill you. i think the mentality with this card is that you should have them on the ropes enough hopefully for them to have to combo w/o timewalk in hand.

Tabernacle
Good against general aggro except it is vulnerable to wasteland, pwns etw but it is also legendary

Slice and Dice
Good against general aggro if you can realistically support the full cc, its cycling effect is very good against etw, but even if they combo with timewalk you might not have the mana available

I think if you can support it, slice and dice and tabernacle combo is probably the best at combating etw and having some utility against fish. Without being able to support double red, I would probably go for some combonation of rolling earthquake and tabernacle. It would probably be metagame contingent.

Is there enough room for 3 slice and dice/rolling earthquake and 2 tabernacle (is this the right number to run)?
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] landstill, please help fix this deck on: November 27, 2006, 07:11:39 pm
Well keeping to your basic build I would say that you should probably drop one or two crucibles because drawing them in multiples isn't going to do anything for you. To add a time walk I would probably look to cutting the misdirections for timewalk and fact or fiction. So in the maindeck i would probably do something like

-1 Crucible +1brainstorm
-2 Misdirection +1 Timewalk +1 Fact or Fiction

One other cut i might look to make is taking out a chain of vapor for an echoing truth, wipe away, or a rushing river. A chalice at one will hurt you quite a bit and will leave you with no way to remove it.

I would certainly make sure to add that brainstorm fof and time walk. If you are set on the misdirections I might take out the stifles instead.

also if you have a moat I would probably remove the other crucible and use moat. Moat would help you in the fish match.

As for the sb i might look to making a few changes as well.

I would probably up your tomords crypt count to 3 or 4 as there seems to be a decent amoutn of decks in your metagame (dredge, gifts, dragon) which rely on graveyard. Also I might look into exhalted angel in the md or sb as it is good against goblins, fish, and sui. You can probably do without nullrod/needle spot. Also in combonation with tormods cyrpt you could include jotun grunt as that will help wreck graveyards. I would also probably make sure to include if you didn't in the main deck already, another type of bounce. Something like wipe away is usually pretty solid. Hope that helps.
3  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Play Situation 5: Grim Long on: August 31, 2006, 07:44:24 pm
The log from magic workstation reads that he is in his first main phase as he has already drawn his card. Also in the present state of the game he has a storm count of 2.

I feel the correct yet all or nothing play is to:
1. Sac the lotus petal for black and then play dark ritual Mana = BBB sc =3
2. Use 1 black to pay for vampiric tutor getting yawg will. Mana = BB sc =4
3. Use 1 black mana to pay for mana vault. Mana = B sc =5
4. Tap mana vault and use one mana from mox sapphire to hurkyl's recall yourself. Mana = 2B Sc = 6
5. Play mana vault with colorless mana. Mana = 1B sc = 8
6. Play mox sapphire Mana = 1b sc =9
7 Brainstorm with mox sapphire Mana= 1b sc = 10

Then if you draw into any ritual effect, lotus, any land, led, or a mox jet you should be able to go off no problem. THis gives you alot of outs and will allows you to win the game outright.

I think the correct play here is to try and go for it as passing the turn allows him to have the ability to potentially get mana drain mana open, or to be able to brainstorm/ancestral into something disruptive.

1) starcraft - i have a feeling with a weeks practice I would still beat most non Korean players (seriously they still have popular sc tourneys there)
2) Diablo 2 ---yeah blizzard and their addicting games. played Hardcore on the servers. Always trying to make the ladder, and only somewhat successful. Once i went hardcore i could never go back. It was a rush, as sad as that is. Diablo one still had the butcher (FRESH MEAT)
3) Hero's of might and magic - I played 2 more then 3 but i love them both.
4) Counterstrike - while still around i remember playing this game for hours.
5) Baulders gate II- there were so many side quests, this game was insanely complex and enjoyable.

honorable mention - worms 2 gotta love the worms

I think I would sell my 4k plus collection of magic just to help design a RTS version of starcraft 2
5  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / 2nd Place At Philly Area Mana Drain Tournament on: July 26, 2005, 07:14:55 pm
Trying to figure out a deck to play I had three options. Meandeck Gifts, Keeper (4c control or w/e it’s called), or stacks. Without many of the random cards for stacks I was going to play either gifts or keeper. Gifts has much more innate power so I chose that over keeper even though I had very little experience with the gifts deck.

So the tournament is at CollegeVille Card and Games. I’ve preregistered and I look up on the website and the time says 1pm. I think great this will give me plenty of time to sleep in. So I wake up at 11:30 and remember the time was different on TheManaDrain. I call in and I have to make my lunch and rush over because it starts at 12. I get there to find that I have plenty of time as my proxies are good and my deck list is ready. They take a bit to start up and we get going.

Round 1 Brian Beauregard ( rogue drain w/shops aggro control) 1 of my two friends that are there.

Game 1 He gets out a first turn juggernaught. The pressure is on as my life total starts to drop. I draw a bunch of cards with ancestral and gifts. I figure my tinker is good if ancestral went through. I stabilize at 6 with colossus out and he has to attack into me. I attack and timewalk that’s game.

Game 2 I get out a fast colossus and timewalk for the win. He draws no gas or forces.

Games 2-0
Matches 1-0

Round 2  UGw Aggro Control WTF type deck

Game 1 He gets a rancor on a birds and starts beating me down with river boa and a ninja. I bounce the two creatures with rushing river and then colossus finishes the job. I was at 3. Pretty close.

Game 2 Fast beats with river boa and ninja. I stabilize at 8 life when I yawgwill and go nuts after that.
2-0

Games 4-0
Matches 2-0

Round 3 John – Custom TPS type variant

This is the second friend I have to play. It was a small tournament but it still sucks as Brian and him are the only two guys I really know there.

Game 1

He does his crazy combo thing and goes for the yawg will. I have the force. He probably had to go for it. I setup colossus quickly for the win.

Game 2 He gets out defense grid early. He has extract but I have colossus in hand fortunately or unfortunately.  I get out a gorilla shaman I try to get setup on mana for the win but he gets me a turn before I can go off. If I had played more aggressively I might have had a better chance. He did have bounce and other nasty stuff that could have stopped me.

Game 3
I decide to just race him and get out a turn 2 colossus. It goes the distance.

Matches 3-0
Games 6-1

Round 4 Jake    Death Wish and Tainted Pact Type Combo
His report is here http://www.themanadrain.com/forums/index.php?topic=23987.0

Game 1
He sets up for the combo on turn two and he has 3 cards left. I mind twist him and take 2. He can’t get going after that and I do some cool yawg winning. I do such cool things as play time walk yawg will it and tinker. Then burning wish time walk back for a good time.

Game 2 He goes nuts time walks into a first turn win and I have no force.

Game 3 I have to mull to six and keep a 1 land hand just because it had a force. He takes the force with duress. I play my one land and he takes my gifts and wheels me into good stuff. I kill him shortly after as he drew no gas. I have mystical but only need tinker and not will. I tinker then recoup walk. Then wish walk back and win. I thought that was pretty clever but I am not the best player ever.

Matches 4-0
Games 8-2

Round 5 Intentional Draw

Matches 4-0-1

Top 4  Not sure of the guy’s name sorry. Playing workshop aggro.

Game 1. I have a turn two tinker colossus. The good hand is too much. I force his razormane and swing for the kill.

Game2
He gets out some early pressure with chalice and crucible. I time walk into lands and yawg will into some more ability to stabilize. I eventually tinker. He gets jar out and looks for an answer. He finds none and I win shortly after.

Matches 5-0-1
Games 10-2-0

Finals Again forgot name Sorry. Playing UG fish (Jacob orlove’s version I think)

Game 1
I get an early colossus out an kill him while still at 11.

Game 2 I deal no damage to him as I play really sloppy and get overwhelmed with his threats

Game 3. I keep a hand I shouldn’t have. He plays first turn chalice for zero. I have a hard time getting stuff going. He kills me shortly after with rootwalla and factories.

Matches 5-1-1
Games 11-4-0

Top 4 was

UG fish
Workshop Aggro
Witness Oath Combo
Gifts

Heres the decklist I played. Its essentially Gifts I got from morphling.de

Maindeck (61 cards):
1 Black Lotus
1 Darksteel Colossus
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mind Twist
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Ancestral Recall
4 Brainstorm
1 Fact or Fiction
4 Force of Will
4 Gifts Ungiven
4 Mana Drain
3 Merchant Scroll
2 Misdirection
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Rebuild
1 Rushing River
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker
1 Burning Wish
1 Gorilla Shaman
1 Recoup

Lands (15):
3 Flooded Strand
3 Island
2 Polluted Delta
1 Tolarian Academy
3 Underground Sea
3 Volcanic Island

Sideboard
1 Blue Elemental Blast
1 Bosejiu, Who Shelters All
1 Chainer's Edict
1 Coffin Purge
1 Cranial Extraction
1 Pyroblast
2 Pyroclasm
2 Rack and Ruin
1 Red Elemental Blast
2 Old Man of the Sea
1 Spawning Pit
1 Tendrils of Agony

The sideboard should have hurkyll’s recall in it. Also I think 3 pithing needle belong in the sideboard. They would help against fish which I had a problem with even in testing. I think though that playing more aggressively would have helped that. Overall I was happy with my performance other then in the finals. Oh well that’s what happens when you don’t play test as much as you should. I still received 4 dual lands out of the tournament and had a good time.

Also I know the maindeck has 61 cards. I do not like that idea but waiting till the last minute does not allow one to make easy cut decisions so I just kept it as is. I am still not sure what to cut and insight in that area would be welcomed. The vampiric tutor and mindtwist were awesome all day.

Props:
Mike the TO for holding a great tournament
Everyone at the tournament for being friendly
My Mom for driving me since I am a bum and don’t have a car.
The deck for getting me to the finals.

Slops

Me for screwing up in the finals.
Everyone else who lives in the area, plays type 1, and didn’t show.
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Black Fish on: July 04, 2005, 11:28:11 am
It seems that if we are looking to add a decent one of to the deck, nether void should be given some consideration. With sinkholes and mana denial strategies, its possible that dropping this could just end games. Coupled with chalice set for 0 that is pretty much game against combo. 1 slot main deck with Consolation, demonic and possibly vampiric might make it a worthy addition. And aether vial + void is some good.

If we want to continue with mana denial strategy it is possible that including fetches + badlands would allow for gorilla shaman. That is just a thought. Or, a white splash could get you swords (anti oath),  Weathered Wayfarer for the mana denial strategy. This would need to be played with crucible though and possibly seal. Although vindicate is slow it can be ld or oath kill. Just thinking of some outs against a popular problem deck.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / 5c on: April 18, 2004, 06:45:50 pm
I have been looking at 5 color for a long time now and it does seem very intresting. However, it is very hard to find tournaments and other people to play. The problems that i have found are:

1) You create a deck for the 5 color format and consequently not able to play it against many other 5 color competetors. This results in a 5 color deck which just turns into a lame casual deck.

2) The cards you want to play in 5c you may need for other decks therefore you are constantly taking things out of the deck making it rather lame.

3) There is lack of support for the format in terms of rules resources and articles to help get an understanding of how to acutally get involved.

I think it would be a really fun and intresting format. I for one would like to participate and enjoy it as it looks really cool. However, it seems that with the problems that I listed, making a deck will just result in it sitting in a box somewhere being pulled out to play for merely casual events.

While a good many T1 players have found a home on this website, a great deal have not. Do we want to have different B&R lists as we travel from city to city?

I would say this is a possible outcome if people did not centralize the list in some way. I think that there is enough communication in the type 1 community to create a list that stands strong for all proxy tournaments.

Quote
How does earthcraft make it more healthy and diverse? It is a bad combo card that won't be played that much. Whoppeee

It is a bad combo and your right it won't be played that much. But it will be played sometimes, and I think that giving people the options is what type 1 is all about.

Quote
As a general rule, I think people cry foul far too often. Rasko and many people on this site would vote to ban dark ritual, but to what end?

Not to discredit those who would have dark ritual banned, but that is why you place competent people in charge of making decisions like that. Who would elect rasko?

Quote
This leads to overswings. Right now I am sure someone wants to ban AK cuz "semmycakes" said tog is too good and we need to stop it fast mmkay? With the current system, a deck has to PROVE itself over MULTIPLE tournaments for something to happen. While this isn't always how the DCI works, it is how it generally tries to.

I think this is an over exaggeration. No competent body would ever rightly restrict AK just because a deck does well during at a couple tournaments.

The benefit of an independent body that has authority over the b/r list is:

1) speed of decision making
2) decisions which are more in tune to the actual type one atmosphere
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Outside the "box" : The Banned/Restricted List on: March 05, 2004, 03:05:52 am
There was so much talk about the upcoming banned and restricted list. The anticipation grew as people were waiting for the latest announcement from the DCI and Wizards of the Coast. Ultimately it resulted in people getting disappointed. For those very few who have yet to find out I’ll provide the bad news here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/announce/dci20040301a.

If so many are disappointed, and if everyone agrees with the fact that some things are unjustifiably restricted, then why not do something? The obvious answer is that we just can’t do anything because wizards and the DCI have all the power. I would say lets look at our options again.

This may be hard to swallow but what about the potential for going outside the system and creating our own banned and restricted list. Now before you dismiss this possibility lets look at the current type one community. First off most type one tourneys and almost all of the competitive tourneys are allowing proxies. Well since these tourneys allow proxies, they cannot be sanctioned. If a tournament is not being sanctioned, then it does not fall under DCI rules and can therefore be changed. Then since the type one community is essentially in the hands of web pages and their members (TheManaDrain, StarCityGames, Morphling.de), why not create this system.

Well, there does in this lie a lot of problems:

1) Finding a competent, unbiased, and universally accepted council to make decisions for the list.  or:
2) Potentially making decision through open polls or ballots or discussion over forums.
3 Gaining appeal and acceptance from those leading web pages and the rest of the type 1 community.
4) Appealing to newcomers of type one without confusing them with an alternate list.
5) Still maintaining the competitive level of sanctioned tournaments without essentially undermining WOTC.

The benefits however, do seem to be appealing.

1)  Some of the cards in this article could be unrestricted allowing for a more healthy and diverse metagame. http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=6723
2) We would no longer have to worry about T1.5 influencing the B/R list.
3) The type one community would have the attention it deserves and it will gain the ability to change quicker.

I think it is a viable idea that at least deserves some consideration. I am eager to see comments on this issue.

And please be gentle, it’s my first time……posting.
