5  Eternal Formats / Europe / Re: May 22nd: Gent, Belgium: MCG's Vintage Proxy Tournament on: May 16, 2011, 07:37:42 am

Too bad indeed. R'dam is 1/2 h ride extra, so it's less appealing than Breda for us.

You guys should probably take a look at the results from a recent tournament in Badalona. Gush decks destroyed the meta in this rather large event:

http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=1383

But there were only 6 workshop decks out of 65:

Thanks for this amazing report.
9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / 5th at Breda XIV with aggro MUD on: January 25, 2011, 10:26:01 am
Hello,

I've been to Breda's Vintage tournament last Sunday.
Since I did rather well (5th), I thought I'd post a report.

I've been out of Magic since last June, so my main motivation for coming to Breda was actually to grab some cards for a cube (decided to build Brett Allen's in December).

I am not a combo player at heart, and since I am rusty, I chose not to play control. That leaves aggro... I checked some lists and thought that Fabian Moyschewitz's must be fine, seeing his 2010 results with Aggro MUD (6 top 8).
I took his latest list from Hanau where he placed 6th out of 80.

1 Black Lotus
4 Chalice of the Void
2 Karn, Silver Golem
4 Lodestone Golem
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
4 Metalworker
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
2 Sculpting Steel
1 Sol Ring
4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Steel Hellkite
4 Tangle Wire
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Triskelion

4 Ancient Tomb
2 City of Traitors
2 Mishra's Factory
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Wasteland

Sideboard:
2 Crucible of Worlds
4 Duplicant
4 Relic of Progenitus
4 Tormod's Crypt
1 Triskelion

On Saturday evening, I played a bit against Chuff who would come with me.
He played various decks, and it was 50-50 most of the time (unsideboarded).

Nice turnout on Sunday: 42 players will vie for a place in top 8 (6 swiss rounds).

Round 1: Bart Froyen - Oath of Druids (U/b/g)
Bart has had some success with this deck, so I suspected that he would sport it again.
I get a good start with Sphere of Resistance, followed by a Thorn of Amethyst and a Lodestone Golem. Bart had the opportunity to play an Oath of Druids, but I guess he wasn't holding one. Golem and a Mishra's Factory beatdown take the game.
Game 2 I don't get a lot of disruption: 1 Thorn of Amethyst and a Wasteland.
Bart drops an Oath and soon Emrakul appears. I try to get rid of it with a sideboarded Duplicant, but he has a counter for it. We move on to game 3.
I get an excellent start with this turn 1: Mox Pearl, Sol Ring, Thorn of
Amethyst. Bart counters with a Force of Will, I then play Mishra's Workshop, Mana Crypt and Lodestone Golem. Turn 2 I topdeck a second Golem and that's all she wrote...
2-1, 3 points.

Round 2: Marcel Gelissen - Affinity
I didn't know what he was playing, last time I had seen his playing Mishra's Workshop. Today he took a build with Affinity and blue (for Thoughtcast and the good blue cards).
I open with Thorn of Amethyst, followed by a turn 2 Golem and a turn 3 Sculpting Steel, coping the Golem. Marcel gets out Precursor Golem, which brings a stalemate (he took only one Golem hit). I decided not to use Wasteland and my patience is rewarded as I draw my 6th mana to play Steel Hellkite. Marcel has no answer, and since he took 8 damages from his own Ancient Tombs, one Hellkite hit is enough.
Game 2: I Wasteland his Seat of the Synod turn 1, strip another one turn 2, but his turn 3 Tolarian Academy is there to stay. He plays a Magus of the Unseen, which hampers my mana development as he takes control of my Metalworker every upkeep of mine. I have to play Sculpting Steel on the MetalWorker to be able to play my hand. Marcel plays Master of Etherium which is rather big. Thanks to Metalworker #2, I am able to play Triskelion (getting rid of the Magus) and
Duplicant the Master of Etherium. We had to call the judge to know Duplicant's power and thoughness: it's like his Master of Etherium: if Marcel plays more artifact, my Duplicant will grow Smile Anyway, Marcel can't keep up with the biggies...
2-0, 6 points

Round 3: Dennis Baauw - Oath of Druids
Dennis is running the same deck as Bart.
I start with turn 1 Sphere of Resistance, turn 2 copy it with a Sculpting Steel, turn 3 copy it again, followed by a Thorn of Amethyst. I get out a Metalworker and activate it for 14 mana, showing enough to Dennis for him to concede.
He has a good start in game 2 with Lotus Petal, land, Oath of Druids. He doesn't have Forbidden Orchard to give me a token to activate his Oath, so I play a Thorn of Amethyst. Dennis kept a risky hand, as he doesn't have any second land. I attack him with Mishra's Factory, making sure he can't cast more spells and hoping he doesn't peel an Orchard. Mishra's Factory goes all the way.
2-0, 9 points.

Round 4: Bagus Bender - U/R control
I get an excellent start on the play with Black Lotus, Chalice of the Void at zero, Mishra's Workshop, Thorn of Amethyst and Lodestone Golem. Turn 3, a second Golem makes Bagus scoop. He didn't cast a single spell...
Game 2, I get a turn 1 Metalworker. Bagus does let Karn resolve (Force of Will) but can't stop a Triskelion. Next turn I play a Tangle Wire that gets mana drained, but he can't stop the second Wire. After 3 hits from Triskelion, Bagus is at 4 life. When Bagus he goes to 3 thanks to Force of Will on a Thorn of Amethyst, I shoot him 3 times with Triskelion.
2-0, 12 points.

Round 5: intentional draw with Roel Jans

Round 6: intentional draw with Richard Drijvers

There are 5 Mishra's Workshop decks in the top 8. I am seeded 4th.

Quarter finals: Jeroen Schaffenhausen - Mono-red workshop
I lose the toss for the first time of the day.
Jeroen empties him hand on his first turn: Black Lotus, Chalice of the Void at zero, Bazaar of Baghdad, activate the BoB, crack the Lotus for red, Goblin Welder, Mana Crypt, Lodestone Golem. I manage to put a fight, but never really come back.
Game 2, I open with turn 1 Metalworker, turn 2 Steel Hellkite and Sculpting Steel on the Hellkite. He can't deal with two 5/5 flyers.
Game 3, he starts with Lodestone Golem, followed by Crucible of Worlds and Strip Mine. I manage a turn 2 Steel Hellkite (thanks to Mana Crypt) to deal with the Golem, but he plays Pithing Needle. I play my own Crucible of Worlds, but can't get more than one land in play due to him stripping my land each turn. As I don't have a Metalworker, this prevent me from playing anything else significant. He doesn't have any red mana, but due to Mana Crypt, it would be very risky to try to race him with the Hellkite (that I can't boost). He draws Black Lotus, sacrifice it for red and casts Rack and Ruin, getting rid of Steel
Hellkite and Crucible of Worlds. I can't deal with the Lodestone Golem and Jeroen takes the match.

I get 2 fetch lands for my fifth place and can finally close my deal with Rudy (the card dealer) to complete my cube (still a bit over 20 cards to get).

Thanks to Arjan Bos for organising another nice tournament.

Cheers,

I guess that Mishra's Factory should be Mishra's Workshop in the first deck...
11  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TMD 2010: NEW LAYOUT on: June 09, 2010, 04:07:34 pm
My opinion: results should be in the same thread for everyone to see, but regionalizing Tournament Announcements makes complete sense to me.

Agreed, as well as most of what Nataz said.
I remember when there was only a tournament forum (with announcements and results) and how unpractical it was. Splitting the announcement board is a good move, results should be one forum as it used to.

As for the decktype split, I don't know. Time will tell.

I put this deck together to combat Oath decks in particular, with Powder Keg and Duplicants in the main to help win games on the draw, with additional protection in the sideboard in Eon Hub.

Why is Powder Keg so good vs Oath?

Quote
Powder Keg - 2

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a fuse counter on Powder Keg.
Tap, Sacrifice Powder Keg: Destroy each artifact and creature with converted mana cost equal to the number of fuse counters on Powder Keg.

16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: TnT 2K9 : another approach on: April 13, 2009, 04:57:49 pm
I haven't tried the deck and have some questions.

Your deck is based around Survival, so I don't get why you use 8 mana sources (spirit guides) which are one shots.
I understand that you can pitch them to survival to get a creature, but why not use Elves? Turn 1 elf, turn 2 Survival + 1 activation (or drop Bazaar).
Also, how good are Chalices? You can't play them at 1 (Welder is a big part of your plan), nor at 2 (Survival and Null Rod); with no Workshop, you can't hope for 3 or more. So, you play them at zero I guess? Seeing that you will start game 1 only 50% on average, how useful is it? Wouldn't 2 extra Gorilla Shaman be a better choice?

Without Tarmogoyf, it seems easy to shut you off: keep the Welders away (or play a Needle / Chalice at 1 and protect it), and your deck doesn't do much. Fortunately, people don't know that when they don't know your deck.

I would still play a single Magus of the Moon, as it can win you some games vs combo or even Oath. At worst, you can pitch it to Survival or Bazaar.

Finally, since you play 5 strips and focus on mana denial, I would cut 2 Squee for 2 Life from the Loam.

20  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / 4th with Mono-red workshop in Mol (08 Feb) on: February 13, 2009, 01:06:40 am
Hello,

First tournament of the year for me: Mol (Belgium), a Mox to grab.
I haven't played since Bazaar of Moxen in Annecy (France) in September 2008.
I don't think slaver is good enough vs combo right now, so I am considering the top 3 decks from Jan 17 at Myriad Games: Rich Shay's Remora's deck (love that card, my first serious T1 deck was built around it with 4 Mana Crypt), Demonic Attorney Painter or Ray Robillard's mono-red workshop.
Since I don't have time to test, I take the third one (I would have liked to try Rich's deck, but I fear the lack of testing in the mirror).

I take it card for card:

1 Black Lotus
4 Chalice of the Void
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Memory Jar
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
2 Sensei's Divining Top
1 Sol Ring
3 Solemn Simulacrum
2 Sword of Fire and Ice
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere
4 Triskelion
4 Goblin Welder
2 Gorilla Shaman
4 Magus of the Moon
1 Wheel of Fortune

2 Ancient Tomb
1 Barbarian Ring
4 Mishra's Workshop
6 Mountain
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Wasteland

Sideboard:
1 Burn Out
1 Gaea's Blessing
4 Leyline of the Void
1 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
2 Shattering Spree
3 Sphere of Resistance
2 Viashino Heretic

There are four of us to go to Mol: Matthieu took 75 cards of mine to play Ichorid, Alexandre is with his U/B/W fish and Pierre plays storm combo.

This is the first time the tournament is unsanctioned with 10 proxies.
There are 37 players, 6 rounds + top 8.

Round 1: Raphaël Lecocq - Ad Nauseam
I get out a turn one Magus of the Moon, he has a Lotus Petal to cast Dark Confident. Seeing his Tundra, I think he plays fish and play a second turn Chalice at 2. He doesn't draw any basic lands, turn 3 and 4 Simulacrums do the job. When he discards Ad Nauseam, I get what he plays.
Game 2 he opens with Duress. I get a turn 1 Shaman and topdeck a Trinisphere on my second turn that hits the board. 2 Magus of the Moon and Thorn of Amethyst prevent him to do anything.
2-0, 3 points.

Round 2: Chirstophe Bolsius - Oath
I am not confident starting this round, as I know what he plays. I open a hand with 2 non-disruptive spells and 5 mana source and mulligan. I have to  mulligan to 4 to get something vaguely playable. He starts with land, Mox and Lotus but does nothing. I don't get any gas and he plays an Oath some turn later that I can't cope with.
Game 2 I get a good start with a Sphere of Resistance and Chalice at zero. He was holding some jewelry and is screwed.
Game 3 is all mine: I get turn 1 Sphere, turn 2 Sphere, followed later by a Thorn. He is stuck, but forces a  Sword of Fire and Ice (I have a Welder in play). A Trike goes all the way.
2-1, 6 points.

Round 3: Tim Steur - U/R workshop
Tim seems to get what he needs when he needs it against me. This was no exception.
Game 1, He is at 4 life when his Razormane Masticore hits. I have 2 Magus, one equipped with a Sword. I could get 2 extra and hope for my lone Barbarian Ring to finish him off, but I don't. Too bad as I finish the game with the Ring in play: he wipes the board in a few turns and kills me.
Game 2 is no better. This time, it's Smokestack and Karn, along with the Ubiquitous Masticore that get rid of my board.
0-2, 6 points.

Round 4: Alexandre Chuffart - U/B/W fish
I get a good start with turn 1 Ancient Tomb and Thorn, turn 2 Magus. My turn 3 Thorn is Forced, but the next turn 4 hits. You could think that Thorn of Amethyst is not great vs fish but he runs few creatures and lots of trick cards, so it's bugging him. He doesn't see any of his 2 basic lands.
Game 2 I get an early Shaman, he plays Null Rod. I cast a Chalice at 2. This stops him cold. I draw a Sword that is promptly used to good effect after the mox monkey ate the Null Rod. He told me afterwards that he could have bounced the Chalice with Echoing Truth: when Chalice comes into play, the counters are not yet on it, so he can bounce it before the counters come. Nice trick, too bad he still had a hangover and couldn't think straight.
2-0, 9 points

Round 5: Benjamin Vand den Broeck - Ichorid
He has to mulligan down to 3 to find a Bazaar. I have a Wasteland in my opening 7. I topdeck a Workshop for a turn 2 Trinisphere. He doesn't recover.
Game 2, he mulligans to 4 (plus 2 Serum Power). I must admit I am some good at cutting dredge players Smile Yet again, I have a Wasteland in my opening hand along with a Leyline turn zero. He draws a second Bazaar which I waste again. Trinisphere, Shaman and Sword of Fire and Ice is enough to take care of him.
2-0, 12 points.

Round 6: Benny Massin
We ID.

Quarter finals: Benny Massin - Painter
Benny is playing Demonic Attorney's version with Thoughtcast. Good I have a couple of mox monkies.
Game 1 goes no further than turn 3, I can't do anything to stop him.
Game 2 I open with Chalice at one and 2 Wasteland. These were critical, as he later told me he was holding Tinker which I couldn't have dealt with (I couldn't have played a Welder due to the Chalice). I kill him with a Magus of the Moon I think.
Game 3 is quite long, Benny plays an early Viashino Heretic while I have a Welder and 2 Magus. He plays a Ingot Chewer and start to hit me for 3 a turn. At 4 life, I gang block it, losing a Magus and a Gorilla Shaman. I then play a second Welder and a Heretic of my own. I hit him for one a turn (attacking with Magus and Heretic while he blocks the Magus with his Heretic) until he dies. He then tells me I could have played with my Top to get an extra card a turn (I was worried about his Heretic) since I had 2 Welders. I should play more often...
2-1.

Semi finals: Marcel Gelissen with Bomberman
Having piloted Bomberman in a few tournies, I know it doesn't fear workshop a lot.
I take game one by beating him with 2 Simulacrum in a uneventful game.
Game 2, I have to mulligan, my 6 card hand is not that great, but I keep. I don't have any red source and I am holding 3 red creatures. I play a first turn Chalice at two but don't draw any mountain while Marcel goes into beatdown mode. In retrospect,
Game 3, I play an early Magus which is not countered, followed by Sword of Fire and Ice to put him on a clock. After 2 hits, he is at 6. If he doesn't do anything, he is dead next turn. I am holding a Triskelion. He has an Island and a Mox Sapphire untapped. I decide to play the Triskelion to put extra pressure on him. He drains. On his turn, he casts Thirst for Knowledge, Trinket Mage, and Auriok Salvagers, along with Black Lotus. He has now "infinite" mana and Engineered Explosives, so he gets rid of everything in play except the Salvagers and Trike. He then plays Seal of Cleansing to shoot my Triskelion. I don't draw anything to come back and he beats me to death. Had I not played the Trike, I would probably have won. Oh well...
1-2.

Thanks to Magic Club Mol for another sweet event.

See you in Paris in March.
21  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Painter @ Myriad in August on: August 17, 2008, 11:16:02 am
We rolled two dice, whichever of us rolled a prime number won. If both of us rolled a prime number, the lowest prime number won. My opponent rolled a 9 (6 and 3) not a prime number. I rolled a 5 (3 and 2) which is prime, so I won.

I see. I thought it was highest score with 2d6 wins, and that you won with the smallest prime number you can do with 2d6, which is two. Which is impossible...

Thanks for clarifying (and also for the report, as always).

You didn't comment on Lim-dul's Vault. Any better than Trinket Mage?

Cheers,

Round 3 Matt - 5 color Shop.

Game one I win the die roll (lowest prime number on 2d6) and go first turn time walk, second turn tinker. He doesn't have welder and doesn't draw it so we are off to game two.

How can you win the die roll with 2?
23  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [report] Mox Ruby Tournament in Utrecht 14th place with Slaver on: August 16, 2008, 07:21:03 am
Round 2: Carl Devos Playing  Control Slaver

When I see my pairing I know I’m facing the mirror and somebody who has a lot more expirience then me playing this deck (Carl was First during our last vintage tournament in breda with this deck) He’ s a nice guy and we get ready for our first game.

Game one
Carl mulles to 5 cards and when we finally start I get a turn 2 tinker putting triskelavus into play and beat him to death without him being able to put up a fight.

2-0-2

My boarding plan was in 2 Rack and Ruin, 1 Jesters Cap, 1 Fire // Ice Out 1 slaver, 2 intuition, 1 thirst

Game two
He chooses to begin and plays some things I don’t remember and didn’t write them down and passes the turn.

My first turn and I draw a Tinker (with Crypt, Mox Sapphire, island, Volcanic FoW, Drain, Goblin Welder in hand) I drop the Mox, crypt and the  Volcanic island  tap the island and cast welder it resolves and I pass the turn. Carl again does nothing interesting and keeps 2 mana open to pass the turn.
At this point I decide to take the risk and walk into a drain and having to fight a counter war over it so I play the Island, and tap the mox and crypt to cast tinker (which resolves)  Looking at my library I decide to put Jesters Cap into play and use it. I remove his Slaver, Titan and Tinker and pass the turn. During his turn he again does nothing but play a mox and passes the turn again, at the end of his turn I welder back the Cap putting the Crypt into my graveyard. I start my turn drawing Manadrain and Cap him again.. With no kill left in his deck (and the only thing missing is Triskelavus) I think he either boarded it out or has it in his hand.. either way it doesn’t matter because I can always stop it or welder it out.

At this point I make a crucial mistake and take out his 3 trinket mages instead of his 2 darkblasts and 1 tormod’s crypt thinking that the beating from the Trinkets could be a problem.

During my EOT carl cast Vampiric. Draws a card with his Loa. During his turn he plays a fetch and fetches a Underground and plays darkblast. We fight a counterbattle which he wins because I don’t have 2 blue open for drain and he does and I’m kicking myself in my head because of this stupid mistake.

During his second mainphase he casts Triskelavus with drain mana and the mana left open and my defeat is a few turns away because I’m never getting back into this.

2-0-3

Game Three

Still frustrated about the stupid mistake costing me last game I don’t know anything else in my sideboard that could be of use to me. So I decide to do nothing.

Carl starts this game and I hold a hand with 2 drains, 1 slaver, 1 thirst, 1 sea, 1 Delta

Thinking this is a nice start. We play draw go for a few turns and we go into time. With our last 5 turns just a few minutes away I try and force something by casting slaver (which he Drains) and from this point on I’m a gonner he gets triskelavus out of drain mana and is able to beat me to death within the 5 turns. With his Loa keeping his hand full of counter magic at all time.

Nice playing by Carl but I totally scrubbed game 2  letting him get into this but I feel a little better knowing this should have been my round playing this deck for the first time against such a experienced player and losing on a play error is something I’m taking with me in the future. This day was ment as a learning experience and I’m doing just that learning a lot from the mirror. Carl is a nice and good player so i’m glad I played the mirror against him.

2-0-4

Here are the notes I took...

Game 1: I mulligan twice into 3 lands, Force of Will, Pithing Needle. You play Tinker on Triskelavus and I can't stop it.

Game 2: I have turn one land, Mox, fetch Ancestral Recall with Merchant Scroll. You cast your own Tral on turn 1, I force, you force back. On my 2nd turn, my Tral goes through. You then Walk and Y's Will, getting Tral and Walk, Mystical Tutor on Tinker. On your extra turn, you cast Tinker on Jester's Cap getting Titan, Mindslaver and Time Walk (I am holding Y's Will and Triskelavus). You noted Tinker, but I think it was Walk, which is a bad target (if I'm wrong sorry about it). Next turn, you cap me again, getting 3 Trinket Mage. I Mystical Tutor getting Dark Blast (I don't play Vampiric Tutor) to get rid of your Welder, so you can't cap me anymore. I get Welder online, drop Triskelavus in the bin thanks to Thirst for Knownledge and beat you to death.

I think you shouldn't have tinkered for Jester's Cap, but for Titan. I also don't get why you side Mindslaver out.

Game 3, I get a first turn Library of Alexandria. You can't put enough pressure to drop me below 7 cards in hand and win from the card advantage you can't match.

Nice games.

Cheers,

I have no way to test the decks I post so if anyone wants to test any of these for me I would appreciate it (I'm on a mac so no MWS and I live in small town Iowa where no one really plays).

OT, but I wanted you to know that you can play online with a Mac with Mindless Automaton, a software compatible with Apprentice and MWS. Check this thread for help on how to install it.

Enjoy.

I am not sold on SSG and ESG: Survival is mana intensive, so I prefer permanents to generate mana rather than one-shots.

Where is your copy of Anger?

Triskelion doesn't fit if you run Null Rod. Try Duplicant maybe.

About Faerie Macabre: I've been playing 4 main deck in my latest build of Vengeur Masqué (also a SotF-based deck) and they were great. I even cast them (thanks to Birds of Paradise) to beat vs Bomberman.

Good luck with your build.

Congratulations for an excellent performance with a incredible deck.

Your deck is 59 cards, I guess the missing card is Tolarian Academy.

Thanks for the report.

Mindless automaton should be ok: http://mindless.sf.net/

It works on linux and so if you have X11 installed on Mac OS, it should run.

I've run it on Linux but haven't tried it on OS X yet.
I took some installation notes on Ubuntu Linux.

I'll post photo's of the event on www.themanacrypt.nl and top 8 decklists and such on both the manadrain and manacrypt.
I know I didn't finish that high but I really wanted to share my tournament results with you guys and give an impression about the deck, the meta and our  tournament.

Thanks for your report.

Any chance of having the top 8 decklists?

How come the pics are so weird? Did you take them with a mobile?

Cheers,
