The automatic response to anyone that says "Well I'm going to make sure that I do XYZ to protect my cards":

1) Kenta's deck
2) Klug's computer
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Goodbye to Deckcheck.net on: October 18, 2010, 12:58:41 pm
I read through the entire 20 page thread on MTGS about this.  There were actually a fair number of people mentioning storeless TOs in their areas that did things like keep foils, sell packs meant for prereleases before the event, etc.  Obviously none of them mentioned that those guys were selling 10,000 foils on eBay, but there are probably more bad apples there than just a few.  I also have yet to really see what real way to punish the low-level fraudsters exist.  A store gets its distribution yanked, but the random small time storeless TO that was skimming half of his allotment of prerelease foils doesn't seem like he can get any worse punishment than losing his free flow of WotC prizes.

Also, it looks like most of the people in the thread that are upset about the changes are outside of the USA, where prevalence of game shops is lower.

I wonder if the WPN policy change is due to the Clifton lawsuit and wanting to stop/prevent other people from pulling off a similar scam.

To my credit, I made fun of Semenman at the time of the original Brown Paper Bag list (BBS/Mono-U with Prohibit), and to my detriment, I made fun of JP for suggesting that Gush + Berserk + Psychatog would ever be playable.

I don't think MiracleGro started was T1 invention - I'm pretty sure Alan Comer had that one in 1.x before we ever got to it.  That being said, adding Tog + unrestriction of Brainstorm was a stroke of genius.

Which is pretty understandable seeing how the entire deck came about as kind of a joke.  At GP Cleveland we wanted to have a Vintage side event, but couldn't find enough people so we just played amongst ourselves.  The only deck I had on me (other than my U/G Madness deck that I had brought for the tourney proper) was my Standard Psychatog deck, where I swapped out 4 Counterspell and 4 Circular Logic for 4 Mana Drain and 4 Force of Will and after blowing out a few of the decks that Smmenen had on him (I think Mask and mono-blue?) I got the crazy idea that ZOMG this could be a real deck!  I then tried playing it in what would be the last BD online tournament (which I think only lasted like 2 rounds before BD went down) and was just completely blowing out those "mono-colored shit" decks as Zherbus put it of the time.  My favorite was letting Parfait (or maybe Enchantress?) do whatever they wanted for a few turns against me before casting Upheaval/Tog on turn 5, which made them discard like 15 cards or something.

I have no idea where people have been playing Magic, period since Neutral Ground closed on New Year's.

As for me, having kids pretty much killed my time at the movies this year--unless Over the Hedge, Cars and Curious George is your idea of quality cinema... I haven't had a worse year for cinema since I was like five years old. Sad

It always amazes me. There's films like Spirited Away and such that are animated and just beautiful to watch no matter what your age is. Yet every single freaking CG film in the past 2-3 years has been, 'talking animals or inanimate objects'. I was really happy when CG began to take off, because I figured what they were going to be able to do with it would be great. Instead we get talking animals every month.

For however bad Final Fantasy and FF7: Advent Children are, at least they did something with the damn technology. Sad

Man, and lemme tell you, I can't STAND how all of those anthropomorphic animal movies use racial caricatures for just about every character except for the main one.  Even one like Happy Feet, which is one of the better ones that I've seen, still has (sexually potent) black, (greasy) Latino, and (hook-nosed, conspiratorial) Jewish caricatured characters.  I think the only one that I could think of that really wasn't so bad was Over the Hedge (really just the skunk), but it still had a scene where the black woman animal is considered to be unattractive so she has to get a makeover in hopes of passing as non-black.  That and the fact that the villain was an upwardly mobile female professional.  It's so frustrating when the movies like give inklings of trying to be progressive (suburban alienation! plundering the environment!) and then have crap like that.

Oh, and the worst one by far in this regard was Madagascar.

A bit off-topic...but i just happened to read a question in the rules forum regarding City in a bottle....wouldn't that card completely wreck ichorid? Although, we haven't come to the point where such narrow hate is necessary.

Well, probably no more or less than say, Pithing Needle

What was that movie Zach Braff was in this year? I saw it also, it was fairly decent... forget the name.

Fearless is Jet Li's last martial arts movie - he is trying to become a "serious actor" now.

Not only did The Last Kiss make me physically ill (I spent the rest of the weekend barfing, which I am blaming on the movie), but the entire theatre burst out laughing when Fake Natalie Portman In Garden State gave him the mix tape.

Ultraviolet was the worst movie that I've ever seen, and I've seen Manos.
You've obviously never seen Terror Toons.

I have not, however seen Terror Toons.

Here is the shining example of how Ultraviolet was terrible: I couldn't even enjoy it as a mindless action movie because it would show here surrounded by like a dozen guys, and then cut to her walking away with a pile of bodies behind her.  It doesn't even give us the mindless action, so how are we supposed to enjoy it as mindless action?

Also, Happy Feet was SO WEIRD.  I don't know what to think about it.

Snakes on a Plane is fun if you see it with a bunch of people that think that they're at a midnight screening of Rocky Horror.  The second time that I saw it, the theatre was pretty subdued until me and my friends started hissing or yelling things, at which point everyone started to loosen up and get into the carnival atmosphere.

Two words: Cop.  Out.

The Daily Show on this was hilarious.
No, as JP mentioned to me when we were talking about this, the REAL cop-out was when Rudy Guiliani got it in 2001 so they wouldn't have to give it to Osama Bin Laden. THAT was a cop-out.

Now that I think about it, it is a cop out if you believe that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should have won.

If this counts, my favorite was a playtest card from Legends called Genesis with the text "All lands become 1/1 creatures and instantly start fighting".

20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Your Favorite Tournament Report on: October 04, 2006, 09:16:34 am
Since people have already listed Shuler's report and The Redemption Report, I was going to say Playing Baked in the Bean Bracket, but the existence of the article is more of a joke than the article itself.

Also, while I love The Redemption Report, does it actually make sense to people that weren't playing Magic 10 years ago?  All the humor in that article comes from the mid-90's TCG boom and from the typical Dojo tourney report.
21  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: 6th Place At Prerelease [6-1-1] on: September 26, 2006, 09:46:10 am
Agreed.  One of my opponents had a Negator totem and it really slowed down my attack ability.
22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: The Fate of Countermagic on: September 25, 2006, 08:59:33 pm
But I'd rather play Remand/Mana Leak/Spell Snare than one of those counters, despite not being hard counters.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: The Fate of Countermagic on: September 24, 2006, 08:32:41 pm
Here's the cheesy answer.  Counterspell keeps other counters from being printed.  T2 would never have had Muddle the Mixture or Remand if Counterspell was still around.  Counterspell isn't strictly better than either of them, but 99% of the time you'd prefer Counterspell.  Keeping Counterspell out of T2 keeps the design space open (with Hinder/Cancel around, it becomes a trade-off).  So who cares?  You do.  Remand is a good T1 card that wouldn't exist without Counterspell.

It's worse than just losing one card (or a few: Rune Snag as well).  Counterspell keeps T2 from stagnating.  If Counterspell were around, there would be like two decks: UB and Structure and Force.  Tron would be gone; mana advantage is worthless if I can answer your turn 3 6-drop with my turn 2 2-drop, and combo would be gone for sure (Heartbeat can play around Mana Leak and Remand, but 8 hard counters is a bit much).

I like the current T2.  I like that it's wide open (imagine Tooth and Nail versus U/x if the blue decks had Counterspell), and that creatures are good again.  I think it's awesome to battle cards like Keiga, Meloku and Wildfire.  Counterspell would take all that away.

Similarly, when Counterspell was legal, they would have to make counters that could complement it in some way whlie remaining somewhat similar in power level.  We ended up with Draw-Go decks in Standard for years because of this very reason.  Draw-Go is not good for a format.  There is very little skill involved, since your only choices are "counter that" or "don't counter that" and mirror matches become entirely about luck since the first player to start missing land drops would lose in short order.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: 6th Place At Prerelease [6-1-1] on: September 24, 2006, 03:55:10 pm
3-0-1

I really like U/W.  The flankers and fliers and shadows are good offensive mans.  Looter il-Kor was totally worth the first pick.  You have good tampo through Snapback, Temporary Isolation, and Wipe Away.

The only reason that I use Firefox is because of a few translation/dictionary extensions that it has that Opera doesn't.  Otherwise, I'd use Opera in a heartbeat.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: B&R update? on: September 05, 2006, 11:19:21 am
I honestly can't see a High Tide deck being better than both Dragon and Grim Long, much less so much better that you'd go undefeated in games in a tourney with it when you wouldn't with one of those two decks.
27  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: B&R update? on: September 04, 2006, 11:16:34 am
Wait wait wait, are you sure you mean "never been objectively good"?  Don't you really mean "has always been objectively good"?  I'm confused.

In general, if Wizards takes their sweet time posting the B/R list update, it means that there were no changes.
