1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Manabond in Vintage? on: August 25, 2009, 07:34:04 pm
Is it possible to build an effective Manabond deck for Vintage? Or for a more specific question: Is it possible in certain metas?

Here is what I have for the core, which is pretty basic:

4 Manabond
4 Exploration
4 Null Rod
4 Sphere of Resistance
1 Trinisphere
4 Life from the Loam

4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
4 Rishadan Port
2-4 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
4 Mishra's Factory

I'm thinking about a R splash for Grudge/Rack and Ruin, and Barbarian Ring.

Any thoughts on this in either direction would be helpful.

I did not realize this was an alternate format, I thought he just meant budget which is why I made rare suggestions last.

Bill_Murray, you might want to be at least a bit respectful if you hope to obtain any respect on these forums.

If you get five uncommons, simply ignore my last paragraph and use 1 Heritage Druid and 4 Skullclamps as uncommons. Grapeshot will likely be a good win condition, although it's hard to say for sure because Heritage Druid is a huge mana producer. Luckily, your Wirewood Heralds can search this singleton copy out of your deck and get you rolling. Look at Pro Tour Berlin coverage to get some ideas for this deck and see what you can pull from that.

Yeah sorry about that. I don't know what my problem is sometimes.

It's funny that you make this suggestion, because it was an alternate build I had in mind. I didn't post it because it's boring as hell. I will probably end up playing the Grapeshot version until I'm bored and just kill them with beats. Thanks for the suggestions.

Peasant= No rares and 5 uncommons max. Way to negate all your advice.

Here is something I've been playing with for a little while, and it's pretty good assuming there isn't too much combo in your meta. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

4 Fyndhorn Elves
4 Boreal Druid
4 Birchlore Rangers
2 Elves of Deep Shadow
2 Quirion Ranger
4 Priest of Titania

4 Elvish Visionary
4 Safehold Elite
2 Timberwatch Elf
1 Heedless One

Noncreature
3 Land Grant
4 Skullclamp
3 Sprout Swarm

Lands:
11 Forest

SB
4 Elvish Hunter
4 Wellwisher

I actually had Tombstalker in the original version, but took it out because of how bad it is against Mana Drain. Personally, I like Tombsatlker's evasion better because the only time trample would be relevant is when I'm saccing perms to get damage in... Tombstalker may make another appearance yet.

As much as I love Null Rod, I decided against it because I really wanted Top in here for Confidant. I know that Top is pretty slow, but I was figuring that with this much disruption, I can stand that. I have liked Top a lot so far.

Cutting balance is probably right.

Mana Drain is pretty out of place, I'll admit. My thinking was that I could play lots of disruption turns 1-3, and then lay a Confidant and ride it to victory, or lay turn 1 confidant and protect it from there via Drain or Discard.  Basically, since most of these spells are so cheap to play, it wouldn't be too hard to keep double blue open. This is how it's played out so far; is my logic wrong?

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't want it to look like I'm not going to take advice; just voicing my thoughts. I'm fully prepared to accept that I'm probably wrong, as I am new.

Ok, so I'm new to Vintage, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Here is something I just made up, so feel free to tell me what's wrong with it. Basically, the idea is to strip them of as many key cards as possible, even at the sake of card advantage, and draw back into it with Dark Confidant.

I'm also looking for any kind of mass removal that I could side in against fish and other disruption aggro decks. Essentially anything playable that can get me a two or three for one would be nice.

UB Suicide

Win
4 Dark Confidant
3 Phyrexian Negator
1 Inkwell Leviathian

Disruption
4 Duress
4 Thoughtseize
4 Unmask
1 Balance
3 Mana Drain

Draw, tutors, and other
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Ponder
1 Brainstorm
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Night's Whisper
1 Gush
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Tinker
1 Time Walk
1 Yawgmoth's Will

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald
4 Polluted Delta
3 Bloodstained Mire
4 Underground Sea
1 Scrubland
1 Tundra
1 Swamp

The sb could also use some work since I'm not totally sure what to play.
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Yixlid Jailer
1 Tormod's Crypt
4 Diabolic Edict
2 Pithing Needle
2 Echoing Truth
