Instead of running the vials maindeck, couldn't you play them as sideboard tech against decks that play lots of counters/Chalice of the Void? Doing so would allow you to keep Null Rod in the main, while having a backup plan against freaking Chalice for two. Then again, Aether Vial lets you do a lot of stupid crap with this deck. Aether Vial's brokenness makes up for the Null Rod's hosing is debatable though. Oh my god...Aether Vial under Standstill is HOT. Proctor looks like he would be very strong, but I think that Samurai might not belong in the deck. It's very, very hard for you to actually cast him with your manabase, so he's pretty dead in your hand without a Vial. If however, he really is that good against Welder and the like, I would actually cut the red in this deck, and just run STP or something for creature kill. It would improve your manabase quite a bit, and allow you to reliably cast Meddling Mage and let you drop Samurai without having to get the basic plains.
Edit: The problem with Vial is that it's ridiculously bad after turns 1-2. Null Rod late game can still be effective, but Vial takes a few turns to get going. By the time you have an active Vial going, most of your creatures will be out of your hand.

How does this deck deal with threats that have already hit the table? You only run four hard counters, so it's basically game over once a welder resolves. Random wins from back to basics may happen, but this deck probably loses to its own lack of removal more often than not. If you do insist on sticking with this deck however, I would suggest cutting the Seers and Thieves for Suq'Ata Firewalkers and Voidmage Prodigies. Firewalkers are terrible, but they're better than playing a random 1/x flyer with no ability. U/x fish isn't even very good right now, so why weaken it even further by cutting off another color?

Yeah, that tournament was a blast. I'm still in awe that about having done so well. Drinking four bottles of Bawls before the top 8 however, was very very bad idea. Combine the caffine overdosage with the initial shock of playing against Stephen freaking Menedian (I should've asked him to sign something) in the first round, and you have one twitchy, hyperactive Asian who plays very bad Magic. I actually only played against one Oath deck the entire tournament, which I lucksacked a win against. It seems to come down to them not drawing/resolving Oath, moreso than having an answer to it. The lone crucible in my deck actually won me a couple of games, as I could randomly lock them with it (bad idea yes, but it felt so good!). In regards to the multitude of workshop decks that made the top 8, I think that it was a result of workshop being just as/more numerous than Oath. Four out of my eight Swiss matches were against workshop based decks, and it seems to me that the problem lies in Trinisphere, and not the workshops themselves. The die roll seems to be far too important nowadays, since facing a first turn Trinisphere with no wasteland in hand usually equals gg. Then again, my word is about as good as a squirrel's, seeing as how I'm the massivest (is that a word?) vintage nooblet around. At any rate, it was great meeting all of these cool Vintagey-omgIwantyourcardsooooobad people. I too, seem to be suffering from an extreme case of Vintage-itus. Chris Byrnes, sorry about the bad beat on 9th, but if it makes you feel any better, I had another stifle in my hand for your smokestack, which would've allowed me to disenchant it on the following turn anyway. My time walk proxy was a UNICORN, not a pony! The difference between the two is vast: Unicorns are badass, ponies are for GIRLYMEN. Slops to myself for recieving a game loss and three(!!!) warnings from the same judge. The amount of hatred he probably has for me is overwhelming. Thanks again everyone, for making our first delve into a major (non Gencon) tourney ridiculously fun.
