Congrats Doug, Your a cool guy, and you deserve a win like this. Your deck was a very big step from Dragon, however. I believe you took down my TNT deck with it last week, my only loss until the finals . And it was all because of Artifact Mutation, which might be the best SB card right now for aggro/control decks to use. Congrats again and a word of advice, take an extra English class your Senior year. Hopefully I'll see you around Christmas when I take a week of leave during Tech-School. Cowboy

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Razormane trigger......
|
on: August 27, 2004, 01:43:56 pm
|
I'm pretty sure this is legal, but I just want to make sure. The scenario: I have one card in hand(any creature, we'll say Titan), with a Razormane Masticore and Survival of the Fittest in play. At the beginning of my upkeep, I put the Razormanes trigger on the stack, use survival to throw away the Titan, and get Squee. Then I discard Squee to the Razormane keeping him in play. My question is, is the above scenario a legal play? I think so, but then again I am not certified as a judge. Thanks guys, Cowboy

Archives / Archived Vintage Tournament Forum / Weekly Type One in Poughkeepsie NY
|
on: May 04, 2004, 03:43:11 pm
|
Hey all, This is just a post to let everyone know about the weekly Type One tournaments that I and a few other MDer's attend every Friday. Where: Champion Cards and Paintball 43 Vassar Road Red Oaks Mill Plaza Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 845-462-1304 When: Every Friday at 6 pm, usually starts by 6:20 at the latest Price/prizes: Entry is $7.50, with full prize support. Between 10-15 people, the usual turnout, first gets a box of any recent set with packs given to Top 8. Over 15 people, and the prize will increase. Also, prizes can usually be exchanged for store credit or fewer packs of rarer stuff. At the moment the store has Italian Legends boosters(4 for first if wanted) and Revised boosters(7? if wanted) among other packs. 5 Proxies are allowed!!!Other Stuff: The metagame is very balanced, with a lot of top decks represented, not many scrubs . I have no affiliation with the store, other than being a regular player, but I would still like to see more players turn out for this every week. If they get big enough, a random Mox tourney could happen. This would be good. To get directions, use Map Quest damnit. Heres a link www.MapQuest.com . I drive down from ~Hudson~ NY every week so anyone in that area could hitch a ride(usually have one extra seat) or follow me down. If anyone has ANY questions, pm me. Thanks guys and hope to see you there, boasnapes (known around here as Cowboy) MODS: please move this to appropriate forum, and please pm me when/if you do, thanks.

Good job at the tourney man, last round was some of the most intense Magic I have ever played. At the end of the third game I had only a lone ESG left in my deck. Stifles and STP's took care of WAY too many of my threats. Sucks you missed top 16.
Teferis response drew you a few cards against me if I remember correctly(may have been another round?). They are such a surprise and provide great card advantage, If I were to run landstill, 2 in the board would make sense.
Good luck in the future,

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Meddling Mage and Stifle

For reference:
Meddling Mage
Color= Multi Type= Creature - Wizard Cost= WU PS(R) Text (PS): 2/2. ; As ~this~ comes into play, name a nonland card. ; The named card can't be played.
My question is, can you stifle the naming of a card? I was asked to judge on this last night, and I said yes, because coming into play is the trigger. But the more I think about it, I am not so sure I was correct. The wording is weird, "AS this comes into play" instead of the usual "WHEN this comes into play".
So was I right to say you can stifle the naming of a card, or not? Thanks a lot guys.

Wow guys, I wasn't expecting so many responses. @Darkmindtone: I am actually going on a trip to Dover AFB this coming Monday with my recruiter and about 15 others. I'm excited to visit my first AFB, it won't be the last I'm sure. @type1playa: Thats good to hear, as long as there are people who are familiar with the game I will be happy. I can turn casual players into serious Type 1 players, easy. @illuzion: I just hope I can play a Type 1 tourney at least twice a month. Sanctioned or un-sanctioned, it doesn't matter. I prefer 5 proxy as it allows me to play almost any deck in the format. As far as being stationed overseas, my recruiter told me that if I put any overseas base at the top of my "wish list", that they will look at all overseas bases before looking to station me stateside. Really, as long as I am not stuck in the middle of a desert, I don't care. I would be as giddy as a schoolgirl if I went to Germany though. Thanks a lot guys. boasnapes

Hey everyone, I am going to be entering the US Air Force later this year, (I ship out for basic training Sept. 1st), and was just wondering if there is a significant amount of servicemen who play? I would also like to know if there are Type One tournaments held for the military servicemen? I belive I read about one that was DCI sanctioned, but this was a few months ago, and I could not find any more information about it. Chances are I will be shipped out to Europe or Asia, seeing as I will be working on heavy aircraft or cargo planes(I will be an Air Crew Chief to be precise), and they need to be located near major bases. Hopefully I can get stationed in Germany as the major bases are, like, an hour from Dulmen and Eindhoven. I am planning on buying a full set of power this summer, and would like to make sure I can use it in the coming years. Thanks to anyone with any information. boasnapes

My question is, if I were to weld my Mana Crypt out during my upkeep, would I still have to flip a coin that turn? What about with a tapped mana vault, if I were to weld it out during my upkeep, do I still take the 1 damage? I hope it's clear what I am trying to ask. Thanks guys. boasnapes

Steve: Yeah, second game I absolutely oversideboarded, rather mis-sb'd. I brought in the following if I remember correcttly: 3-4 root maze(no infinite slaver) 4 ground seal (no welding action) 2 oxidize(yeah... you played a lot of artifacts) But, I think the real problem was what I took out: 4 gibbons 2 trolls 1 survival 1 rootwalla/arrogant? 1 ?????? Sideboarding is the worst part of my game. Hell, at the weekly tournaments I play in, I don't even THINK of sideboarding until the top 4, which I have made the last 4 weeks in a row, winning twice . I really don't trust myself with sideboarding, I may have mentioned that in between games. Well all in all, it was a pleasure to meet and play you Steve. It really was a highlight of my day, along with meeting/playing Jacob Orlove. Both of you guys are cool in my book. happy posting Boas-n-apes aka "Cowboy"

Kowal: I didn't pay out a dime to MA. I went through a speedpass toll booth cuz I would rather pay a 50 dollar ticket than hand $1.60 to one of those damn Massachucettites. I'm just kidding, MA is cool, it just has a shitty baseball team thats all. I still went through that toll booth though. themajickguy: 4 root maze (slaver, tnt, combo, dragon, anything faster than you) 4 ground seal (welders, dragon) 3 tormonds crypt (tog) 2 naturalize (abyss, humility, deed, ect.) 2 oxidize (yeah.....artifacts) As far as the Zealots.....I think what makes them so good is that they never sit dead in your hand. I didn't draw them against any of the artifact decks, or have survival active to get them. Thats why I can't really say too much about their ability. I know I did blow one against Tog, when he had a huge dryad out, a berserk in hand(cunning wish) and an emerald as his only green source. Taking out the emerald bought me a few turns as I was able to block and regen with a troll. Overall they are a decent body, and usefull at times.

Well, I decided to write a report on my decent finish in CT. I went by Cowboy if anyone cares (or if you played me and wish to correct the mistakes I will most certainly make here, I didn't take notes ) The DriveI wake up at 6:30 AM. Having gone to bed at 3:30 AM, and having lost in the local tournament the night before to fucking Dragon in the top 4(I was 4-0 in swiss). Needless to say I wasn't in the greatest mood. I have a 2 hour drive ahead of me so I am out the door at 7 with only 2 packs of cigarettes and 3 gatorades to keep me going, no food. After a trip to the gas station, I pick up my buddy Jason and we head out towards CT. Let me say some things about CT and MA ..... the drivers suck.....the street signs suck(in the case of CT, they don't exist).....the roads suck.... and the people have no fucking clue where they are in their own towns. The drive ended up being close to 3 hours as compared to the 1:45 it should have been. The TournamentWell it started an hour and a half late, so I had plenty of time to watch Jason trade. Around 12:30 they say we will be starting soon, so I go outside for a smoke. I am already on my second pack for the day  . No sleep, no food, and a stressfull drive does that to me. THE LIST: "Big O, Cowboy Bebop Remix" 4 Mongrel 4 Arrogant Wurm 4 Rootwalla 2 Troll Ascetic 2 Viridian Zealot 4 Null Rod 4 Hidden Gibbons 4 Survival 4 Bazaar 4 Squee 12 Forest 4 ESG 4 Waste 1 Strip 1 Sol Ring 1 Emerald 1 Lotus Round 1 vs. Food Chain Goblins Game One: I test the waters, Forest, Gibbons, Go. He follows with some goblins. I finally realize what I am up against but its too late. Game two: I play big guys that trample. Game three: He goes, Ruby, Lackey. He has no land. I play a survival off an ESG. He attacks, and plays the guy where he gets to stack his deck. Still no land for him. My turn two, I play null rod. With about 10 goblins on the top of his deck, he wasn't seeing mana for a long while. 1-0-0 Psuedo Round 2 vs. "Bad Deck" (mad dragon) I'm not going to bother saying anything about the games other than I won 2-1. This guy was really cool though. We were joking around the whole time, it was great. He called his deck "Bad Deck", but really the idea is awesome. Its just too bad that I bring in 11 cards vs. dragon. 1-0-0 Real Round 2 vs. Jacob Orlove w/ U/G fish Game one: I win cuz I have fat. I find out that Jacob is a really cool guy who is a pleasure to play against. Game two : He stops some of my fat and pings me to death. Game three: Damn land light deck. I see one forest/land all game. It gets stripped to boot. In hindsight I shouldn't have taken the opening hand, but a first turn Troll off two ESG's looked so good. 1-1-0 (would have been 2-0-0 but they fucked up ) Round 3 vs. some Dryad/Forgotten Ancient thing Game one: I build up enough fat to get through his huge dryads. Game two : A little tougher because he had like three 9/9 guys. But survivaling up all four Rootwallas EOT got through that. 2-1-0 Round 4 vs. Keeper w/ standstills and ophids Game one: Big fat guys. Game two: I have never had so many spells countered before. I finally build up fat but the turn before I was lethal, he casts Balance. I pitch my hand to Mongrel w/ four Squees yard, a Survival, and two Bazaars on the table. He has to pitch his hand as well. My turn, with less than 15 cards in my library, I Survival. I only have 2 Mongrels and 2 ESG's left for attackers. I play Mongrel, Bazaar into an ESG, play an ESG, lethal next turn. 3-1-0 Round 5 vs. fast Gro-Atog(w/ Deep Anal and lots of goodies) Game one: This guy, John, is real cool. I believe I heard he was on the pro-tour or something, but anyways. I lose this game because I am starting to get very tired. I do put up quite a fight though. This was too long of a game considering the decks. Time walk with two Togs, an 11/11 dryad, and berserk in hand kicked my ass. Game two: Fat + 4 Rootwallas = too many attackers to block Game three: We start this one with the 5 turn rule in effect. Neither of us can kill fast enough. Draw. 3-1-1 I am very tired at this point, I am considering in my head if I can afford a night in a hotel so I don't fall asleep at the wheel while driving 2 hours home. Round 6 vs. Trinisphere TNT Game one: First turn Tinker into Trinisphere kicks my ass. Game two: First turn Root Maze kicks his ass. Game three: I fell asleep during this one, no joke. You know sometimes when your driving tired, you take little 2 second naps. Well I took a few of them during this game. All I remember is being at 4 life under Trinisphere, Naturalizing his only Jugg, somehow breaking his land and dropping null rod leaving him mana-less under his own Trinisphere while I drop 2 Arrogants for the win. 4-1-1 I believe I was 16 or 17th seed at this point, not bad for my first tournament with over 20 people Round 7 vs Steve Smemenen w/ Meandeck Slaver Game one: I can't out race the infinite turn loop. I find out that Steve is more talkative and energetic than I imagined from reading his articles. It was a great pleasure to play against him. Game two: I side in artifact and graveyard hate. He tells me that he has done more testing against Big O than any other deck. I play first and second turn hate. He plays second turn Pentivus. I see no creatures as he continues to bash my face with a 5/5 . Shit happens. So I finish with a record of 4-2-1, 29th place. Not bad seeing as my two losses came against two of the most respected players in the game (damn third game land screw vs. Jacob, I think I could've taken that one ) My friend Jason ends up with a decent record and a binder worth more than my car. So he had a good day as well. Mandatory props/slops Props: The chick at Subway who actually gave useful directions. Jason for putting up w/ my bullshit about directions. Winstons for tasting sooo good between rounds. (total: 38 on the day) The guy with mad dragon, for being cool. Jacob Orlove, and Steve Smemenen, for kicking my ass (wtf?) Slops: CT and MA, for sucking worse than NY My round 3 opponent for being a Red Sox fan(I 2-0'd him, GO YANKEES!!) CT and MA, for sucking worse than NY The organizers for fucking up. CT and MA, for sucking worse than NY MA toll booths for not labeling Fast Lane booths, I'll be getting a picture of my car and a ticket for that one. CT and MA, for sucking worse than NY

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Two questions: Groundseal vs. Tog, Necropotence
|
on: March 16, 2004, 02:02:35 am
|
First off, I'd like to say that everyone in this forum are my new buddies . I have a great deal of knowledge about the rules and the game itself, but once in a while I am unsure of rulings on certain cards. I am glad this forum is available for people like myself. Now on to the questions.... I overheard someone say that with a Ground Seal in play, you cannot pump 'Tog via the graveyard. This sounds very wrong to me as you are not targeting the cards being removed. So to pump or not to pump, that is the question? Now this one should be easy too. Say Bob draws 14 cards with Necropotence. Will he have to discard down to 7 in his discard phase, or does he get to keep them all? I thought he had to discard down to 7, but I wasn't totally sure. Thanks again guys Boasnapes

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Interaction: Madness and Chalice

Just a quick question...
If I discard a Rootwalla, and pay its madness cost(0), to my Bazzar when there is a Chalice for 1 on the table, is it countered? Also the same scenerio with an Arrogant wurm and a chalice for 5(wtf?)?
So to clarify, Chalice of the Void only checks the cost in the corner of the card right?
Thanks a lot guys.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Alpha cards, legal or not?
|
on: March 10, 2004, 01:33:07 am

My question is as simple as whether or not Alpha cards are legal in tournaments(both sanctioned and non-sanctioned). I have an Alpha Berserk and am planning on playing at the dual-lotus tourny. I just wanted to make sure I can use it there. I have heard that they are legal as long as you use sleeves(opaque), but have also heard that they are illegal no matter what.
So what is the offical ruling on Alpha cards?
thanks, boas-n-apes

Nice report, sucks you lost, land destruction is a bad matchup for R/G beats (I play both).
As for your sideboard, 4 red elemental blasts are a must when you're facing any blue control deck. Maybe even 2 or 3 xantid swarms. Also, you didn't mention any Dragon so why 4 Tormonds Crypt? Bloodmoons and Artifact Mutation are great in the sideboard vs. control and workshops respectively. For reference this is my sideboard (or something close to it), it is designed to face workshops and control:
4 Naturalize/Artifact Mutation 4 REB's 4 Xantid Swarm 3 Null Rods
Good luck and happy posting,

T and T collectibles, is that in Berkshire mall?? Or is there another one in Hadley. I went to the one in the mall when they offered up a mox(sapphire??), and once again when I thought a lotus was up for prize. Apparently they decided to change the prize at last minute, ended up being for two packs of mirrodin. Sucked. Anyways, I'll keep an eye on the forums. boas-n-apes

Long Island is about 3 maybe 3 1/2 hours away from me, so It would have to be a pretty rokkin' tourny for us to take the drive down. But, let me know if there is going to be any moxen or loti up for prizes down there, then I might consider taking the long drive. Thanks anyways though. boas-n-apes

Where are all these tournaments I keep hearing about? Jazzy Kat and I play in poughkipsie(sp?) NY every other week, but lately the turnout has been pitiful. The last tournament had a total of.....prepare your selfs.....
THREE PEOPLE!!!!!
Needless to say we did not play, but rather helped build a deck for the other guy that showed up.
So my question is, where are there weekly/ bi weekly tournaments within 100 miles of anywhere along the NY/MA border(we each live about 20 mins away from Hudson NY, I'm north, he is south). We don't mind traveling up to 2 hours, but anything more than that is too much. If anyone is looking for good competition with knowledgeable players, please pm me or post in this thread. Both Jazzy kat and I are craving to play against other serious players, and against people who generally enjoy the game. Thanks a lot in advance.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Why don't more people play Carpet of Flowers?
|
on: January 23, 2004, 03:32:03 pm
|
|
@ MadManiac21: I myself run a R/G beats deck, with 13 non-basics (taiga, fetchlands, 5 strips). This card would be very useful in a situation where my lands were stripped, and with the growing number of people running 5 strips(+ stifle in control), I may well consider using this SB. On to your other note, I believe this card is almost purely for the budget player. Anyone running Big O or GPR is not playing budget IMO. Bazzars are what?? Like 70 a piece. Thats about half the price of my deck, including my one berserk. And they are running four. I think this is what sets us apart in regards to Carpet of flowers, you see it as a tool in a powered deck, whereas I see it useful mostly to the budget player. If I had P9, carpet of flowers would not be as useful to me, I would already have the best mana accelerants in the game(BIG O and GPR are exceptions to this, for reasons you stated above). As a budget player though, I can see how it would give me a boost in certain matchups that I otherwise would have had a hard time with. happy posting boas-n-apes
