Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Sower of Temptation and Diabolic Edict

My opponent had only a Bob as a creature and I had no creatures. I cast a Sower targeting Bob (obviously). My opponent responded by casting edict. I wanted to sac his Bob to the Edict, but was told that my only option would be the Sower. I don't understand why this would be since I would get Bob when my Sower enters the battlefield. until my Sower enters the battlefield, his edict would have no targets since I had no other creatures. Can someone explain this to me?

As others have said, it is a fringe card that is not that good and often the first one cut from your deck to make room for something new/better. You are much better off spending your money on two moxen that you know will always be needed and using a seal proxy for a few weeks before you inevitably cut the card anyway.

Jaco the Mind Sculptor, here is my deck so you don't have to retype it:
Travis Heipp Team Nicedeck Good Luck with That
Maindeck: 4 Standstill 56 Awesomeness
Sideboard: 12 More Awesomeness 3 Super Secret Tech (ideas, not the card)
Seriously though, list is the same as last month except -1 delta, +1 Library

After two great rounds against Ben, I won the round that mattered more and took this with Fire Fish. I hate that deck name. I wish I was more creative, especially since it seems as though the name has stuck. Anyways, great tourney and lots of fun. Hope more people can make it next month!

Just a quick update on this:
SCG's Buy/Sell rate for Force of Will is up to $60/$90.
This is insane! SCG doubled the price of numerous cards in less than a month. That is too much price control for one company to have. I was hoping to get Korean wastes for my deck, but with this jump I can only get English ones for the price Korean ones were last month. As for the forces, if I am paying 90$ for an uncommon it better be: pack fresh, BB, let me find any card in my deck, tap for two colorless, or counter a spell and let me use the CMC mana next turn. I sure am glad I play vintage so I can play with proxies

I ran my list from above at Xtreme on 3-20 and went 2-2. Losses were to tinker-->BSC. Thinking things over I have decided to cut at least 2 Annuls for Steel Sabotage. Twice I was holding an Annul as BSC smashed face. Very aggravating! We still have spell snare to help with Oath. Also, I have noticed that cursecatcher is best used as an early drop to get ninja turn 2 (or turn 3 if we play standstill). His ability does not cut it as it is too easy to play around. I was thinking the same as the above poster regarding Vendilon Clique and plan to switch 2 cursecatchers for 2 cliques. The Third one I will keep just for the ninja. I love me my ninjas I have been trying to get bolts in the deck, but can't think of what to cut. I do not agree with cutting lavamancer. He has won me so many games or provided strong assistance. He can kill beaters so ninjas have an open path to drawing me cards. I could maybe see cutting one Annul for a bolt. However, I think a REB would be just as good, or better. It kills jace and trygon and can counter FoW and tinker (deck's biggest threat). I never thought about cloud of faeries, seems interesting and flyers are always good. Maybe that can replace the third cursecatcher.

Bone: I would add an extra standstill in place of the Ancestral. You will be slower without power and the standstill will slow them down, too. otherwise maybe put the 4th Null Rod in. Swawagon: Early posts in this thread said to cut standstill, but that is way wrong. Standstill is amazing. The synergy with muta and the ninjas is fantastic, too. I can see why you would cut the Dazes. Since people seem to really want Spell Pierce in the deck, I would say cut the Dazes before cutting Annul. Clique seems like a good idea. I thought about it but never tried it. I tried Spirit Guide and was unimpressed. I had Sowers in my original SB and switched them for the jittes. Don't know how much you have played this deck, but try them both and you will see jitte is better. Most creatures in T1 are 2 toughness or less and jitte kills them. Sower is best for Oath dudes, but with Spell Snare and Annul, you don't have to worry about Oath dudes

Regards
Have there been any changes in your deck the last month?
And did you ever wanted the Annuls to be Spell Pierces instead? It just seems better, equally good in the first turns but can also counter tinker, yawgwin and stuff...
Edit: Mishra's or Muta? Mishra's can get bigger when blocking and bigger when 2, Muta can enable countering 2cc stuff.
I took out stifle and put in a jitte. Otherwise it still seems to be testing well how it is. Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to Xtreme this past week due to family obligations so I did not tourny test it. I really want to MD another jitte because I win 90% of the games I successfully attach it and attack. The three times I wished my annuls were spell pierces are outweighed by the 50 times I was glad they were annuls and not spell pierces. I think annuls are much better early game. This is why: MUD. Lodestone, Karn, Hellkite, all countered with one mana while the spell pierce sits in your hand waiting to get pitched to Force. If they are casting yawgwin, they probably have an extra two to pay for spell pierce, otherwise, you still have force, spellstutter, and cursecatcher to deal with yawgwin and tinker. If those don't work then you have games two and three with 4 REBs (for tinker at least) Mishra and Muta seem to be a horse a piece. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, I think either will get you there.

Awesome result Thanks! Did you face any MUD? Any noble fish? Wasn't annul dead against most pairings? Is lavamancer still useful after relic? Do you side in relic only against ichorid (because of main deck null rod)? I have more questions but these are the firsts that came to my mind :p
The only MUD I faced was Ben Carp for top 4. I went 2-1. First game I won by countering turn 1 and 2 karn and lodestone and getting in there with muta beats while null rod shut off his mana to activate his factory. this is why I run Annuls. Game 2 MUD was MUD with turn 1 trinisphere and I don't think I played a single spell. Game 3 was fun. He had the chance to sack his lotus to pay the 1 for daze but instead let his (I think) smokestack get countered. Next turn, I drop shaman and nuke the lotus anyway. couple turns later, all his mana was tied up paying for my energy flux. Pretty sure lavamancer and mutavault got there with the help of a ninja. Did not see any noble fish. Annul was rarely dead. Much better than stifle. Aside from MUD, you still have Oath, Painter, Vault/key, and a bunch of other stuff to counter. I boarded them out once when I played mono-red and put in the jittes. Relic was there only for Dredge. Fortunately I did not see any Dredge as it was the match I feared second most (Ben was most feared). But yah, the plan was rod out, relic in.

This is the list I used at Xtreme yesterday for a first place split: 1st place (split) Travis Heipp Fire Fish
1 Flooded Strand 2 Island 1 Mountain 4 Mutavault 4 Scalding Tarn 1 Strip Mine 4 Volcanic Island 4 Wasteland 3 Cursecatcher 3 Gorilla Shaman 3 Grim Lavamancer 4 Ninja of the Deep Hours 3 Spellstutter Sprite 1 Ancestral Recall 3 Annul 1 Black Lotus 2 Daze 4 Force of Will 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Sapphire 3 Null Rod 2 Spell Snare 3 Standstill 1 Stifle 1 Time Walk ----- 4 Energy Flux 1 Null Rod 2 Red Elemental Blast 4 Relic of Progenitus 2 Spell Pierce 2 Umezawa's Jitte
The deck worked very well and was the most fun deck I have played in awhile. All the jank caught people off guard which usually worked out well for me. Lavamancer, Standstill, and Jitte were the big winners. I used mutavault instead of Mishra's Factory so that I could pump Spellstutter Sprite, but this never happened. Stifle sat in my hand a lot so I would probably cut that for a MD Jitte. I would also change the board to: 4 Energy Flux 4 REB 4 Relic 1 Null 2 Jitte
I wish I could write a longer report, but I did not take notes and do not remember enough to make a decent report.

4 Chalice of the Void 4 Null Rod 3 Blood Moon 3 Gathan Raiders 2 Genju of the Spires 3 Gorilla Shaman 2 Grim Lavamancer 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Magus of the Moon 3 Mogg Fanatic 4 Pyroblast 4 Simian Spirit Guide 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Ruby
Lands (18): 4 Ancient Tomb 4 City of Traitors 7 Mountain 1 Scalding Tarn 1 Wooded Foothills 1 Arid Mesa
Sideboard (15 cards): 4 Leyline of Sanctity 4 Relic of Progenitus 3 Pyrokinesis 3 Pulverize 1 Red Elemental Blast
I played this list this past weekend with these changes: -1 Mogg Fanatic +1 Ali from Cairo SB -1 Pyrokinesis +1 Pyroclasm I went 2-3. My meta used to be shops was the thing to beat so that is why I choose this deck. My two wins were against shops so my plan worked. However, all three losses were to Oath. 2 months ago when I played at this monthly tourney I did not see any Oath. Did they all of a sudden get popular again? My problem and question is: How do you beat oath with this deck? Post board, I would have the leyline, the REB, the pyrokineses and pyroclasm for token killing. I would mull to try and get leyline in my opening hand since otherwise it is essentially not castable. But I do not like mulling below 5. Also, I think I would maindeck 1 if not two, pulverizes. It was helpful against the non-shop matches to assist with vault/key and moxen should null rod get bounced/countered/not drawn. Also, the two mountains in the GY feed lavamancer. I was thinking in place of the mogg fanatics as they were rather unspectacular. Finally, not once did I get leyline in an opening hand without mulling twice. However, my opponent had orchard, mox, Oath in at least one game per round without mulling. I should have known when my GPS stopped working and Subway was out of my favorite sub that this was going to be an unlucky day
