Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: What would burn need in order to become viable?

Burn is not good enough in Legacy, so why would we expect it could ever be viable in Vintage? So the first question is: what would it take for Burn to be good in Legacy? Vexing susher, pyrostatic pillar, ankh of mishra. While the deck most likely will never be teir 1 or 2, it is a strong deck that is allways underestimated and excels when built for the meta. I don't believe burn is a viable strategy in vintage and legacy due to the existance of combo decks that pretty much do the same thing as burn attempts to do, just faster. (And i do believe burn was "meant" to race the opponent, since those decks have no choice but to try and race) With the recent printing of kiln fiend the decks clock has increased to the point where it can race just about any deck out their.

This card is very good. I think it will see play in something like BUG fish or even tendrils instead of negator. Anything that can get 2BB actually. Getting rid of this card is easy.
If your going to win with the swinging for X damage plan, why bother with the extra step of killing your own critter to win.

It seems to me the white splash could be changed to -1 enlightened tutor + 1 mystical -4 meddling mage + 4 voidmage. this would allow you to have a stabler mana base as well as the ability to use excess wizards as counters.

@Troy_Costisick: mauler seems like the anti-dryad card but would probably end up being bounced if he ever got out of control Ive been trying this card on and off, the problem with him is 2 fold. 1st He is slower than goyf which is the new mainstay of gat 2nd For a 3 drop to be useful in an aggro control deck the card needs to make an immediate game changing impact which he just does not do. Speaking of pyro pillar, has anyone had good success with that card? Turboing that thing out turn one seems pretty sweet in vintage. This card has seen play in virtually every red based deck I have run with great success. The only problem with the card though is it requires support disruption, usually in the form of ankh of mishra/black vise. On the issue of crusher, I feel in vintage it will never have a true impact, given line lasher fell out of favor, and it has an on color card to make it infin big: life from the loom. Right now I believe one of the most brutal cards in the format is price of progress. It works under a magus, and virtually every deck is going to take a minimum of 4 damage off it.

A Limited Edition hand-made Mishra's Workshop will be given to every single player just for playing. These "ELD Proxies" do not count towards your proxy count for all my future events, or at any Myriad Games events. I will only be making 50 of these. Players may reserve specific numbered proxies when they pre-register. Boo we demand custom mountains I should be their, if you dont mind putting me down as a prereg that would be greatly appreciated.

The addition of red is a nice touch to the deck, offering strong answers to various decks without to much damage to your mana base. After extensive testing with Rich my sligh deck was giving standard GAT many headaches with the multitude of ways it can attack the deck. Over all though I dont think you need to worry about the match as much with the goyf build of the deck, which was a saving grace of Rich's build of GAT vs many others. As far as mono red decks doing well the meta is very ripe for them atm as many decks are unprepared. The build that I prefer myself:
Creatures: 16 2 gorilla shaman 2 goblin vandal 4 mogg fanatic 4 grim lavamancer 4 magus of the moon
Burn: 11 3 fireblast 4 lightning bolt 4 price of progress
Hate: 11 3 pyrostatic pillar 4 ankh of mishra 4 black vise
Mana: 22 1 lotus petal 1 mox ruby 1 black lotus 4 simian spirit guide 15 mountains
SB: 15 1 pyrostatic pillar 3 shattering spree 3 tormods crypt 4 fratured loyality 4 pyroblast

You say you want to play the aggro role yet have 6 critters, and a combo esque setup. The true versalitility of the uwb build comes from the fact it plays control, can aggro and yet still has a combo out. I would honestly suggest Sui/w build if your looking for the aggro disrupt deck esp in light of sui's recent sucess.

One of the strongest cards in this particular type of fish deck in my experience is cutpurse. It allows solid draw forces them to discard which makes extrapte much more powerful if you chose to run it. Hopefully in the next few days ELD will have the deck lists up from his last event and you can see ym current build for reference, hope this helps.

I myself have been kicking around the idea of a 3 color fish deck, ive taken a slightly less beatdown and more disruptive version of what you have in mind. So far in my testing 3 color has proved to be srtong, but as of date it still needs something to push it over the top. The major issue I see with your build is the lack of stifles md. The lone extripate seems very out of place even with the tutors, any reason in particular you run only 1?

The afore mentioned cards tend to buy time, where as what I am proposing flat out wins as they are left helpless. It may just be me but I feel the more we try to tinker with U/w fish the more it becomes an aggro deck with some defense than a utility based aggro control deck.

I hate to hijack the thread, but in the face of many decks running a single near unstoppable win condition ie: tendrils, empty the warrens, dsc. Has the need for an extract effect been increased? As a U/r fish player I have found rootwater theif to be a great asset. Would something like this have a place in U/w fish over say the traditional children/true believer?
