I know its been a while and I apologize but Vintage is finally back at Richmond Comix! We haven't had an event since October and I have heard from several people that they can't wait to come back to Richmond and play some cards. I look forward to seeing you guys again. Its always a good time.

Just a reminder to bring your Commander decks with you. It is my preferred format

The prize pool will work a little different this time. Top four will each get a foil misprint Urza's Island (no set symbol) in addition to the other prizes.

The bottom of the top eight will pick their prize in rank order from these four cards.

English Wasteland
Italian Wasteland
English Foil Stifle
English Dark Confidant

The top four will do the same with these four cards.

Judge Foil Mana Crypt
FNM Promo Foil Swords to Plowshares
GURU Island
Alpha Illusionary Mask

Unlike our other events I'm not putting a minimum number of players on this one. All these cards will be given out no matter how many players we get. If we get more than 24 I'll add some booster packs or store credit to the prize pool (maybe both!).

See you in April!

So who took this down?  How many people showed up?  I'm pissed I had to miss this had my deck all sleeved up and ready to go but nobody to watch my puppy.

Top 8 decklists can be found here!

I want to thank everyone who came out to play. We had a blast (I actually got to play AND top 8'ed!). I will hopefully have details of our next Vintage event up soon.

Thanks again guys!

Noob question - what does the 15 proxy mean?

It means you can take a basic land and write "Black Lotus" on it and for the purposes of the tournament, its a Black Lotus. There are rules to making proper proxies floating around and a lot of people will tell you a lot of things but for this tournament you just need to make sure the card you are proxying is clearly marked as what it is. If its a card with a lot of oracle text you don't need to write it all on the card but make sure you know exactly what it does. Printing out the oracle text to have with you isn't a bad idea.

The most used rules for making proxies can be found here http://forums.starcitygames.com/showthread.php?11903-Updated-proxy-rules-for-the-Star-City-Power-9-series.
18  Eternal Formats / Northeast U.S. / Re: Richmond Comix Oct 29 Vintage Time Walk Mana Drain Foil Grim Monolith on: September 14, 2011, 07:38:04 pm
So I assume everyone will be playing net decks again: i.e. Painter's servant, Gush, Workshop, and Dredge??

If I get to play (which is unlikely since I have to run the event) I will be playing Dreadnought, Dream Halls or something even worse. I LOVE terrible decks. I especially love taking good Legacy decks and making them bad for Vintage.
19  Eternal Formats / Northeast U.S. / Re: Richmond Comix Oct 8 Vintage Time Walk Mana Drain Foil Grim Monolith on: August 18, 2011, 04:13:06 pm
Seems like a poor time to host an event, given that it conflicts with Waterbury.

Just kidding. It will be on the 29th.

Thanks Nat!

I know its been a while but Vintage is finally coming back to central Virginia! Now that the most insane summer of Magic events I've ever seen is behind us we are going to be battling it out for a Time Walk. The last couple of times we didn't hit the number to give the Walk away so we restructured the prize payout to ensure that we give it away this time. I hope to see everyone there!

Sorry this is so last minute. I honestly thought I had already posted this.

We are building our vintage community!

I've talked to a lot of players who say they want to try out vintage but the difficulty in finding certain cards plus the complexity of the decks keeps them away. Knowing you won't do well in a tournament that has an average $25 entry fee is enough to keep a lot of potential players away. What I'm trying to do is show players just how fun vintage can be by offering a cheap way to learn the format.

We will be building several of the top tier decks here in the store for people to practice with so they can try out a few different things. This will be an unlimited proxy event so feel free to brew up literally anything and come test it out.

Prize support will be in the form of store credit for the top 4 in the amount that we take in for entry fees the following way. First place will get 50% of the entry fees, second will get 25% and third and fourth will each get 12.5%.

I hope to see some of you there!

I've got a car of at least 4 headed to this, and likely a second car as well

What's the expected turnout, you think?

Honestly, anywhere from 10 to 30. If everyone who says they are coming show up it'll be a full house. Realistically, I'm guessing 12-16. However many people show up I have a tough choice to make. Do I play a good deck or do I play the deck I have more fun with? Decisions decisions....

Tommy, this sounds good.  If you do these semi regularly, we'll try to make it down whenever we can.

I'm going to try to do three of these (one a month)  and then have a big one for a Time Walk in June.

Saturday I had a bunch of great vintage players in my store once again to beat my face in. I managed to win a match but with a miserable 1-2 record I dropped after round 3 to play some Dance Commander. I've decided to throw my decklist up for people to laugh at. I was told it was the most fun deck they saw all day so I was pretty happy with that.

I want to thank everyone who came out this weekend to sling some cards. Our vintage community is growing slowly and to help that I'm going to be running more events. I feel like people want to play the format but because of the higher entry fee and the complexity of some of the decks they are a bit too intimidated to try it out. Starting in March I am going to have monthly tournaments with $5 entry fees and unlimited proxies. Top four will get store credit in the amount of entry fees taken in (50% for 1st, 25 % for second, 12.5% for 3rd and 4th). We are going to build a bunch of decks to keep here in the store so if people want to play but don't have a deck they can. I know for a bunch of our regular vintage guys this isn't going to be a tournament they are interested in driving 2 hours to play in but I hope we can get the word out to the community at large.

The first one of these tournaments will take place Saturday March 19th at 1:00pm. I'm going to set up an event in the event forum and I will be putting it on our facebook page as well as our website. I love this format and I hope we can make this community thrive again!
