Yes, I've seen CS slaver lists with AK intuition, but i thought there was a consensus that those builds were weak. I thought that people agreed that they would rather have duress in slaver, than to force through more draw just for the sake of draw. This post is horribly lacking in actual content, and you've more than proven your lack of competence. Warning, with the Ban happening as soon as an Admin shows up. -Jacob

you keep on mentioning the premier decks in t1. which do you feel are in contention? oath stax CS slaver? i've sleeved up my slaver, and i must say, i don't like it much at all... if you feel this is a stronger choice, mayhaps i'll be switching colors soon NOT ONLY is this completely off-topic, but it's also tier discussion, which had been banned on TMD since forever. What would you take out against CS Slaver?
I'm always wondering just how many togs I can take out and still survive with. Also, another card that I usually take out against slaver are my DA's as well as slower card draw (FOF most likely). This gives me enough to board in 3-4 REB, and hopefully survive and hold off his draw long enough to smash.

two words. goblin bombardment...
that is some serious tech.
and if not, you could always use the 1 sac, gain some life. I don't see how it is that bad considering that I have seen goblin bombard in multiple IE 2-3 top 8 finishers. Albeit they were running it for different decks, such as CS slaver, and maybe one tog, but why is it not a viable way to stop oath? This negates oath of druids, and forbidden orchard, and makes it that you don't have to worry so much about out countering them. Also, it is an enchantment, and as we know, oath doesn't run any MB bounce or removal. If bombard is not good, what would you suggest? Bombard also deals damage... But I can see your argument. Once you play it, it will be pretty much a dead card since they won't ever orchard. Not sure...

well, i'm sure his experience with dumptruck (theoretical or not) definately helped him perform well with EBA. However, at the same time, extended can barely relate to t1 anymore. Anything that he was playing back then is so different from what he's playing in t1 that the only advantage is his familiarity with the deck, rather than his familiarity with the meta. again, what this shows is that either the tourney scene there is weak (toad says it is not) or...we want to see some tourney reports =)

Your manabase is all wrong there. Just as every other person has said in other threads regarding different control decks, tog is just the same in this metagame. You can't play it without at least 4 islands in the md in this metagame.
Here is my current manabase that you can try out if ou want to.
7 SoLoMox 5 Fetchlands 4 Island 3 Volcanic Island 2 Underground Sea 1 Tropical Island 1 Swamp now this is interesting. i'm assuming that you place more volcs than seas because post board you'll be using red much more? however this makes your first turn duress pretty... oh yeah, you aren't running duress are you =)

You have a very low chance of winning the Slaver match without 4 Red Elemental Blast in the SB. That goes without saying - you can however over come that with the other colors (as I already mentioned). I have seen Slaver loose a many a time to decks that do not run any red at all - for the simple reason they made the best of the colors they ran. And with blue, green, and black you have a wide variety of utility to pull on. I feel more inclined to believe smemmen. Thanks for not contributing anything useful to the discussion here. Warning for spam. -Jacob

I have always found CS slaver and tog to be very similar. Both have very heavy control components, as well as strong/resilient draw. What pushes one to play smash or slaver? Both are premier combo control decks and I'm interested to see what one generally plays? Personally I like hulk much better, it is much cleaner and sleaker, however nobody really feels that smash is any good, and maybe it's time to sleeve up slaver...

Great, thanks that really helps.
One thing about strips, I really feel that they are so important in every matchup, however when I'm not utilizing strips to the fullest with first turn COW, or any COW lock, then it seems as if I should just not pursue it. I have been thinking about adding back the rest of the off color power, and again, my reasoning goes, if i can't play the mana denial role as well as other decks dedicated then to it, I should just try to power out a faster tog.
Again, which decks are suitable to run strips? I've seen CS slaver run strips, and I've heard a lot of people mention strips in CS slaver. Which control decks should utilize mana denial and which should forget about it? I think that's am important issue tha tpeople have not clearly addressed.

FTK? Since when did smash start adding FTK to it's sideboard. What would you be bringing this in against that tog can't handle? and if tog can't handle something on the ground, then FTK probably won't cut it either (sundering titan, colossus)
Really, FTK has never seemed like a strong move in t1. It costs 4, ripe for mana drain, etc.

I talked about this deck the week after the tournament with Gabriel and he admitted his deck was quite crap. He just won because of skills.
T1 tourneys are dense on T1 players. Even if they are some good players, a great player like Gabriel will always make you feel like a scrub. This sort of lends credence to the idea that a couple of Nassif's opponents probably had stars in their eyes when sitting across from him and resultingly walked into huge mistakes, probably allowing him to steal a couple of games or maybe even matches. I think that this is a really weak excuse. Anyways, Toad, if you could please enlighten us further on how he played that would be really great. How exactly would somebody go about piloting a weak EBA deck, given the strong t1 environment that you stated.

Hahahahahahaha!!!!
That is in no way what I said. I said that the people who play WW havent found a way to give it a niche in the meta. I said he does well, but thats mainly cause its just faster than what people are used to. He averages 6 creatures turn 3 and a turn 4-5 kill. No pump or nuthin, but he hasnt played the good decks such and you and myself. He has only played at the store, and he knows what to do against certain decks. He is a competent player, but he hasnt played real decks, just the local ones. He loses to long, herpes, dragon, mono blue, tog, GAT, and ven his brothers crappy madness deck. He just is too fast for most other decks to handle, which is the idea of weenie decks i think....He is stil making it better also. It is hard for decks like Herpes and sometimes long, due to the extensive life loss(long has bargain and necro). Its just really fast and no one prepares for it. For a while, when white was more popular, i sided 4 glooms and got no worse than 2nd each time. Not bad, just fast. Think about it, dont make assumptions. You are putting words in my post(thats a cleached metaphor type thingy that I modified...) Now I'm confused. You said WW is good, but your friend loses to everything. You say he's a good player, but he loses to everything. So is he good or not?

For the record, I am a Dane.
You said in sweden you guys can rent cards? What is that like? What kind of rates are we talking about? What kind of insurance does the renter have against play wear, etc. Very curious about how this would work and if it is a viable business or just friends lending to friends. ==== Also, why do we continue to discuss the best way to combat 1st turn trinisphere? I thought that it was pretty much a given for almost every deck if faced with turn 1 sphere. This isn't just because the trini is there, but rather because they went first, played their mox/lotus, and their workshop, and next turn will be beating you down while you'll have a simple land... If we were talking about how to battle a first turn trini on the draw, that would be much more relevant. Rack and ruin seems like a much stronger option, given that you can expect to hit a land and a mox drop much more likely.

#3, no I would prefer not. The discussion of the metagame is important, but I'm much more interested in how non t1 player's dominate the environment, running such crap as vindicate...
Then start a different thread about it. Its relevance to Dr. Sylvan's article is tangential at best.
Hyperion
Well, considering I started this thread...This thread wasn't started by Dr. Sylvan. But whatever, I see a relevant thread now.

Lifetime Pro Points: Antoine Ruel: 215 Gabriel Nassif: 181 The EBA list is indeed nutty. He doesn't play Cunning Wish, either! If only our Frenchies could interview him about it. . Like I mentioned! This is so crazy, I really fail to see the point of his SB. I can't imagine what he would be taking out to play all of these one ofs...Even if he did SB in any of those cards, he only has ONE tutor...I assume that he is relying on his finkels to help him draw what he needs when he needs. He also has ZERO basics...I'm not really sure what this means. It's been a long time since anybody has run 2 full sets of duals, perhaps this allowed him to withstand strips better? I suppose when you are running a disenchant MB, as well as 4x vindicate, then you aren't as afraid of crucible lock. However, I've got to say, those vindicates are PRIME drain material... So, we can determine from his MB that he has great game against oath, and...what else? Obviously decent against combo, just given the fact he's running 4x duress and 4x fow... Finally, this is one of the worst Will's you could run...imagine casting will...time walk, a. recall, and that's it.

Antoine Ruel
====
Is he a great player also?
Anyways, I brought up this post because I was really wondering if anybody has a match analysis, or any kind of tournament report from him. No offense to anybody, but Nassif sure as hell knows what he's doing and I think a ton of insight could be gathered by learning how he plays. Obviously we can look at his standard reports, but that's not quite the same as deciding force or not!

http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=8551Gabriel Nassif, Crazy. I just don't understand it. How much experience with type 1 could he possibly have? He's on the gravy train, testing and testing and drafting and drafting, yet still manages not only to t8, but also win an event! Looking at the decks he played, sure some were underpowered, but he played some t1 staples as well... Anybody else feel that this is another flow to the quality of type 1 players? This pretty much shows that skill > deck...I'm still at a loss on EBA. Check out that SB, it is a whole bunch of 1-ofs and no cunning wish that i see (could be blind, i'm tired). crazy... Link added

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / help for hulk smash, sideboarding problems.
|
on: December 09, 2004, 11:44:38 pm

Hello, i love hulk, and i almost always play it even if i can sleeve up slaver.
I'm wondering if people can give me some general and specific sideboarding advice.
Hulk is so tight, that there are very few cards that you can afford to take out, and I'm having problems making those decisions.
Firstly, i'm running BUG hulk, with 5x strips, and only b lotus, mox U, mox B, mox E (on colors)
3 Psychatog 4 Duress 4 Force of Will 4 Mana Drain 1 gush 1 Time Walk 1 Yawgmoth’s Will 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Demonic Tutor 2 Deep Analysis 3 Cunning Wish 3 Intuition 4 Accumulated Knowledge 4 Brainstorm 1 Black Lotus 1 Sol Ring/Mana Crypt 1 mox blue 1 mox emerald 1 mox jet 1 Swamp 1 Tropical Island 3 Underground Sea 4 Island 4 Polluted Delta 1 flooded strand 4 wasteland 1 stripmine
1 oxidize 1 naturalize 1 BEB 1 Chain of Vapor 1 echoing truth 1 Deep Analysis 1 Coffin Purge 3 Ground seal 1 Berserk 1 FoF 1 Snuff Out 1 ghastly demise 1 diabolic edict (colossus)
first, what are the cuttable cards from the main deck?
deep analysis, when you are trying to race against aggro? AK's when playing the mirror, or AK oath? (how many should i leave in, 1? duress: decks that feature creature heavy land/mana accel heavy (5/3?) cunning wish: instead of spending an additiona U2, just topdeck the answer from your deck?
the deck is so tight that it becomes inherently difficult for me to determine what is the best choice to cut. mind you, i'm "inexperienced" in tournament play, thus seeking help.
CS slaver, welder based decks, 3 groundseal in, what goes out? i would say duress, since you can't hit their creatures, and the only thing you would want to dump in the grave would be 4 TFK
stacks/5/3/anything with MWS
1 oxidize 1 naturalize
anti trinispshere
should i be boarding in any Seals? I know that they run welders, but the welders aren't a priority. however if they get online i'm screwed also.
take out the cunning wishes? duress must stay to hit the trinisphere, COW.
finally one problem deck for me = oath...
board in 1 DA, board out XXX AK? duress must stay, but how do i fit the bounce in? and chain of vapor is surprisingly useless in this match, too many times i see my oath'd in tog bounced back and replaced with another spirit so that they may oath again...
thanks for all the help...

i would love... but i even find difficulty on MWS or appr...
going to the public channel and playing all these vintage players throwing around their isamaru's hurts my brain.
are there any dedicated channels where the quality of the players is a given? if i could find one, i would be testing much more.

i fail to see how form of the dragon helps is a viable SB option for any metagame.
is it mostly used against control? (which you should be winning?) obviously i'm not understanding it correctly, because it seems as if it is a dangerous play against any life damage combo, any workshop fat, any aggro control decks...etc.

First of all, Duress if fucking money against pretty much everything in the format. If everybody is so worried about Trinisphere, then you should DEFINITELY be playing 4 Duresses. If you go first, you're going to snag their Trinisphere or other important card. If you don't, you've probably got to mulligan into a Force of Will. Duress at least gives you better odds of combating problematic cards like that, not to mention it's pure butter in the mirror.
==== So, who actually does this? I'm new, no kidding, but I really do not ever see anybody mulling into a force, or mulling into anything specific (aside from combo.) Maybe I'm blind, maybe I'm not playing the right way, but if my hand is strong w.out FoW, how likely is somebody actually going to dump it in the hope of mulling into a force?
Also, why do people keep brining up berserk for the aggro match? Isn't berserk used in all cases? How are you going to kill somebody not using berserk...just attack for 10 turns?! Crazy...
Unless you're saying by your 3-4th attack you'll have enough in the grave and hand to smash...(~20 in grave, 4-5 in hand)

this is just another testament to how powerful and ridiculous workshop is. it is really getting annoying when workshop decks have almost 5-6 must counter first plays,
tangle wire goblin welder crucible trinisphere
most decks only have ONE must counter first plays...
btw, if i'm wrong, let me know. i have still not found out a good way to deal with first turn tangle wires. I generally would rather see a first turn stack then wire...anybody else?
