1  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: G/W for 2010 on: March 04, 2011, 06:01:53 am
If I where to run a 5 color manabase (and I DO it) I'd cut those Tarnished and put Gemstone Mine instead. And I would not run 9 Strip effects, since it weakens even more the manabase. So, if you're running 4 Leonin Arbiter (so opponent can't use his fetchlands) there is enough with 5 strip effects, IMHO.

Currently I'm running a 5C Hatebers deck and my mana looks like this (using mainly WGB, and R being for 2 Gorilla Shaman and blue for Ancestral and Walk)

4 City of Brass
4 Gemstone Mine
2 Savannah
2 Scrubland
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
5 Moxen

and 4 more slots that I'm currently testing.

Last tournament I ran 4 Noble Hierarch, which I didn't like at all, since they do no produce B (for Confidants) nor Red (for Shaman and Ingot Chewer). So I'm thinking what to put on this slots, either Birds of Paradise or the Vials. I'm not very found of vials in Vintage, since they are quite slow, even more if you don't use coutermagic. And not running enough 1CMC creatures rends them useless since turn 3.

My current 'bears' are Gaddoks, Confidants, Qasali, Leonin Arbiter, Kataki's and Tarmos (that will get cut since they are slow) and will get replaced by Revokers. I'll try to sneeze a pair of Gorilla Shaman, since I'm not running Null Rod.

I also run Thorn of Amethyst and Spell pierce, that maybe will be cut soon.
2  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: G/W for 2010 on: September 01, 2010, 09:12:58 am
I'd suggest this mana base, including the 4 Wastelands:

4 Windswept Heath
1 Arid Mesa
1 Wooded Foothills

4 Savannah
3 Horizon Canopy
1 Forest
1 Plains
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
2  Moxen
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal

With it you have access to both basic lands, and if you are afraid of opposing Wastes, lower the Savannah count (-2) and add both basic lands. This way, you reduce the impact of a card I'd add fore sure: Root Maze.

I would probably try to sneak some Root Maze, maybe 3 of them, going -1 Gaddock Teeg , -1 True Believer, -2 Mirri's Guile, +3 Root Maze, +1 Sylvan Library

Root Maze is awesome vs opponent fetchlands, Moxes, and any artifacts that Shop's Deck can bring in. It would give some time to sneak in some points of damage againts most decks
3  Eternal Formats / Ritual-Based Combo / Re: Deck Discussion: Sick Long (Ad Nauseam) on: October 27, 2008, 06:42:56 am
sensei's divining top seems subpar.  Its too mana intensive, and slow for this deck.  if you were going to cut anything cut that.

I'll rather cut a seize than SDT. Top works wonders with topdeck tutots (Vampiric, Mystical and Imperial). Nine disruption slots are enough for this deck.
4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: A Second Potential Nut Kicking Card on: September 17, 2008, 02:01:30 am
EVEN with 22  0 cc mana sources, 8x 5cc cards (4 fow 4 Nauseam) and the rest 1 cc spells you have an average mana cost of 1.84, which is a little un realistic, I say ANY deck which runs this card will have an average cc of 2, so 5 cards could net you - 10 life easy

...err

22 cards cc 0 = 0 cc
8 cards cc5 = 40 cc
30 cards cc1 = 30 cc
=
60 cards with total cc 70 = 1.1666 average casting cost. Not so different from bargain, and if you draw 10 cards you'll only lose 5 life if you hit a FoW o Nauseam... For sure you'll run cards with higher costs, but adding 4-5 bombs and a pair of tutors will rise the average cc to .... 1.5 ??? Not much for an instant speed bargain (and I'll never play 4 of these, maybe 2-3)
5  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: [Deck Discussion] Renovating Blue Bullshit on: September 09, 2008, 04:37:16 am
BBS is a Deck I love, and I've been trying to create a Control deck full of counters (12 or more).
Wette's idea is great, but I don't think so many counters are necesary  (18 are bit too much). You can cut some of them to make room to both black tutors. Even I've been trying the old and well known Leak and the new Rune Snag, none of them gives me the confidence I want (even I haven't tryed them in conjuction with 'The Rod').
So I thougth... what do I need to relaibly play and protect my Angel ?
First, an easy way to find the Tinker, wichs comes with the inclusion of the 2 black tutors. Second, a way to easyly protect the Angel once in play. This came in form of one of the newest counters, Pact of Negation.
I haven't still tested Wette's version, but I preffer a more reliable counter (in my humble opinion) Negate, so I cut the Leaks, the Rune Snags, add 3 PoN and both black tutors. I changed the single Brainstorm for a more effective draw spell (given the redundancy of having multiple Rods in play or a Rod with a bunch of moxen) so I put in a Thirst. And finaly, changed an Echong truth for a Rushing River or Capsize, a way to remove a Chalice for 2.

What about this?

3 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
3 Underground Sea
6 Island
3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire

4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
4 Negate
3 Pact of Negation
2 Misdirection
2 Echoing Truth
1 Capsize / Rushing River
1 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Tinker
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
3 Skeletal Scrying
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor

3 Null Rod
2 Platinum Angel

SideBoard:
4 Pithing Needle
3 Tormod's Crypt
3 Yixlid Jailer
3 Energy Flux
2 Massacre

My 2 cents
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: UR Landstill on: July 18, 2008, 01:43:58 am
I've been playing Landstill variants since it's creations till now. I've playtested dozens of versions, UW, UB, UR, UBR, UBW and recently I'm playtesting a UB with good results.

Anyway, the more I play this deck, the less I like Conclaves. I've been reducing them until the last tournament where I played NO Conclaves (in my UB I play DT and VT to find the Factories). Brainstorming with friends we have come to play another win condition, so we came to Meloku the Clouded Mirror. It's awesome versus stax (bounce lands) or aggro (create chumpbloquers). It's a perfect sink for Mana Drain mana and it puts a flying clock to the deck. It's pitchable with FoW, too.

I'll never play 4 Null Rod. You NEVER want to see them in multiples.

I prefer Spell Snare instead to MisD because I can use it as a first turn play, as Stifle is.

I've always played with 26 mana sources, so I only play 4 fetches. I think that 26 is the optimum number, as you 'always' will open with 2-3 lands in the starting hand and you'll run into less mana floods (it sometimes happens).

And concerning to the side, in all my recent Landstill builds I've always played 1-2 copies of Razormane Masticore, another perfect sink target for Mana Drain and AWESOME vs any aggro deck (Fish, Goblins, Aggro MUD, Red Shop Aggro), witch are the decks that can pu fast pressure vs Landstill.

When playing  UR versions, I've been comfortable with only 3 REB effects. You can use this 2 slots for 1 Razormane and 1 open slot.

My 2 cents.
7  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Ur Phid on: October 23, 2007, 08:19:58 am
I recently played a spanish tournament (I live in Barcelona) and this is the list I played (note that here in Spain you can't see as many Gush decks as in the USA, an a lot more of MWS decks):

8 Island (Makes the deck inmune to Waste / Crucuble)
3 Volcanic Island
3 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring

4 Ophidian
4 Magus of the Moon (I'll probably cut 1 for a Mox Monkey)
1 Razormane Masticore

4 Mana Drain
4 Force of Will
2 Control Magic (After Lorwyn it will be Sower of Temptation)
2 Misdirection
1 Spell Snare (Should be Mana Leak)
3 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Echoing Truth
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall

1 Fire/Ice

4 Chalice of the Void (MVP of the tourney)
2 Engineered Explosives

Sideboard
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Spell Snare
2 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Rack and Ruin
1 Tinker
1 Platinum Angel
3 Sulfur Elemental
2 Trickbind
1 Pyroclasm

In my meta there isn't any Ichorid or Oath deck, so I don't have any specific cards against them.

4 Magus are innecesary, since you don't want to see them in pairs, and never in starting hand. I'll try a Mox Monkey.
Masticore is used to speed up the clock, because some games are called in time...
Thirst may seem slow, but they serve the propose to dig in and to discard moxes / chalices. It serves as draw engine 2 when opponents plays a lot of creatures.
I always set chalice for 0 or 1, since I tend to slow down the game (0) or prevent multiple 1cc (I only run 3 maindeck)

Although the deck lacks library manipulation, yo can draw a lot of cards. And since the deck is so redundant, you can always find the answers you need.

The only bad matchup is fast aggro deck (goblins or the like), but post board its a 50/50.

5. spellstutter sprite - much better than spiketail hatchling

I dont think Spellshutter Sprite sees play, as it only counter a spell with a CC equal or lower than the number of faeries you control (1 ??)

Another card worth consideration is:

Sower of Temptation
{2} {U} {U}
Creature - Faerie Wizard   Rare
Flying
When Sower of Temptation comes into play, gain control of target creature as long as Sower of Temptation remains in play.
2/2

It's a Control Magic with legs, what do you think?
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Single Card Discussion] Pact of Negation on: April 19, 2007, 04:14:57 am
This card has appeared in http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/mf142.

Quote
Pact of Negation
{0}
Instant   (Rare)
Pact of Negation is blue.
Counter target spell.
At the beginning of your next upkeep, pay 3{U}{U}. If you don't, you lose the game.

Do you think it will reconvert some decklists (such as Pitch Long) or make inviable achetipes, such as Doomsday, Belcher or the like reapear???

Imagine you're comboing and are going to win right now. This card is a free counter, with no drawback !!!
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: sideboard for u/w fish on: March 20, 2006, 04:22:59 am
Hello all, it's my first post.

My suggestions are very simple:

- A Fish build needs 23 mana sources, exactly those you have, no more, no less.
- The Isamura isn't great in multiples. If you want effective creatures, use Icatian Javelineers. They cost the same, have a nice ability (vs. Welders / Confidants) an are reusable with the Ninja.
- I don't like the Brainstorms. This card is used in Control decks, that want to adjust their hand. This deck relies on redundancy. I suggest Curiosity instead.
- Although you my like the counterspells, I don't see how you manage to keep UU open. Fish is mana intensive, you drop threats every turn, and if mana open, attack with the Mishra's Factory!! My suggestion is, as noted by Negator, Daze.

For the Sideboard, it depends on your meta, but here in Spain (land of Workshops, CS, Storm Combo ang Goblins) I use:
1 Swords to Plowshares
2 Arcene Lab
3 True Beliver / Orim's Chant
3 Annul
2 Energy Flux
3 Hydroblast
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / No Drain Gat on: December 29, 2004, 05:55:33 am
Here is the list I'm actualy playing. It runs no Tog, and instead I've put in the "combo" Tinker + DSC. This version of "GAT" is quite straight-forward, since it's main goal is to drop an early dryad and pump it to the limit.

Kill(5)
4 Quirion Dryad
1 Darksteel Colossus

Draw(16)
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Gush
3 Night's Whispers
4 Brainstorm
4 Accumulated Knowledge
3 Serum Visions

Counter(10)
4 Force of Will
3 Daze
2 Misdirection
1 Disrupt

Utility/Tutor/Broken(8)
1 Time Walk
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Tinker
1 Mistical Tutor
1 Berserk
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Demonic Tutor

Mana(21)
1 Tropical Island
1 Underground Sea
4 Polluted Delta
1 Flooded Strand
1 Wooded Foothills
4 Island
1 Swamp
1 Forest
1 Strip Mine
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal

SideBoard(15)
1 Oxidize
1 Naturalize
1 Ground Seal
1 Tormod's Cript
2 Damping Matrix
3 Energy Flux
2 Hydroblast
3 Back to Basics
1 Diabolic Edict

The land configuration is a bit unusual, but it realy works, since you are much less disrupted by wasteland effect, and I run 3 SB Back to Basics, a house against most of the current decks (excluding Control Slavery).

It runs no Cunning MB, since I've found them realy slow, since my land count is a bit low, and it's difficult to cast it.

All counters (except Disrupt, which I like a lot) are free, so you don't need to worry if tapped-out. Hence the inclusion of Serum visions and Wispers.

I think I'll cut the merchant for a copy of an Echoing Truth o Chain of Vapour, to solve the problems of facing a Plat or a similar.

(Sorry for my bad English) Very Happy
