1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Ubastax parties like its 2005 at chicago side event 3-8-09 on: March 16, 2009, 01:24:26 pm
The views and opinions expressed in this post are strictly those of the post author. The contents of this post have not been reviewed or approved by Pastimes, Inc.

Well said, Nick.  Many of the posts here have been rude or downright offensive.  It's childish and entirely unnecessary.  As I stated in my other post it isn't that Alan doesn't respect what the players want, it's that we were unable to change the format due to many restrictions, including staff availability and a Cinderella time imposed by the venue.  Nick was also spot on in addressing the space issue.  We had about 300 more players than we expected for the main and every side event therefore had more people register for it than we had estimated.  We did the best we could with the space we expected we would need.  No one could have anticipated the record-breaking attendance for Legacy of all things.

As for the prizes, a number of players have expressed a sentiment akin to this one:
c) the slops section was kinda lacking. guru swamps, while weak, are still valuable and would look great in a trade binder. i've top 8'ed and even top 4'ed and won nothing. (small tournies, obviously) that's how it goes.
The wide disparity in opinions expressed here is very telling.  I feel that some of this comes from the very different prize support seen in different formats.  Many of the TOs for Vintage promise large prize pools to try to breath life into the format.  I recall seeing a number of posts over the years explaining how big of a hit the TO took for running with the prizes they advertised.  Standard, Limited, and even Extended events are very often for product or store credit, and not for a large quantity of it.  The prize support certainly could have been better, but at least there was Vintage to be had.  I was grateful to have the opportunity to play at all as I play this game to have fun, not to make money.

The views and opinions expressed in this post are strictly those of the post author. The contents of this post have not been reviewed or approved by Pastimes Inc.

People don't seem to understand how scheduling at these larger events works.  The Vintage tournament could not be started earlier.  With the staff required to maintain the GP and to start the PTQ (checking 200+ decklists consumes a great deal of manpower), there wasn't a large enough staff available to start the Vintage any sooner.  Maybe by an hour, but that still leaves the concern about being able to be completely rapped up and out of the venue by midnight.  If we were unable to leave by that time we would have been charged for another day's worth of rent.  As for the suggestion to have players from the event stay to judge the event, that is not an option for many reasons.  Not the least of which is that a player registered for an event is not allowed by the DCI to judge in said event.  I can go into greater detail if anyone really cares to hear it.  I spoke with Alan at length about changing the event to Top8 and it was determined conclusively that there were too many concerns surrounding the start time, end time, and staffing availability to realistically be able to do this.  Say what you will about other aspects of the tournament, but this was the only real option available.

Considering the lack of support for the format, I'm a bit surprised that there is such an outcry over the format of the event.  The rest of the weekend had already been planned and I asked for a Vintage event.  Alan scheduled one.  We should be grateful there was Vintage to be played at all, not complaining bitterly that the swiss+1 format was omgwtf the end of the world.

6  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: 12/6/08 Legacy at Pastimes (Niles, IL) for duals on: October 23, 2008, 03:44:19 pm
The prizes are a little light for me to drive from Wisconsin.  Also are these garaunteed, because I know in the past Pastimes has said they are and then they didnt run the tournament when they didnt get the amount of people they wanted.

Would people rather it be $25 and have better prizes?  I'll do the math and see how this stacks up to our vintage event last weekend.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: 12/6/08 Legacy at Pastimes (Niles, IL) for duals on: October 23, 2008, 03:43:19 pm
Owen T. and Myself were at a tourney that they refused to run.  Normally I wouldnt care too much but it is almost two hours each way plus me getting up early on the weekends.
Josh, these are the kinds of things I was alluding to in my post about not feeling bad about not making it to the last Pastimes event. I've also been at multiple events on site where the entry fee was increased from what was advertised online. Shady things like this are what keep people away from Pastimes in general, no matter the format. That being said, I'll try to make it to this event if I'm able.

Does anyone else feel that a $25 entry fee is a bit much? The higher that entry fee goes the less I'm willing to go. I understand that this affects prize support which does matter to a lot of people. I for one am pretty new to the Legacy format and am not that interested in dropping $25 to get my head smashed in. I imagine that this may affect some others that are contemplating the decision to attend as well. Just my 2 cents. Either way, thanks for getting tournaments going in the Chicagoland area again.
Ben Carp's tournament was $25; this tournament is being advertised in Josh's post as $20.

Regarding prize and tournament structure, I'd recommend trying this:
$20 tournament entry, with a sliding guaranteed prize scale, based on number of entrants. For example:
- With 8-19 entrants @ $20 each, give out the following guaranteed prizes:
1st place - 4 blue dual lands* + 4 Polluted Delta or 4 Flooded Strands, or $160 in store credit
2nd place - 4 blue dual lands,* or $100 in store credit
3rd place - 4 Wooded Foothills, or 4 Bloodstained Mire, or $50 in store credit
4th place - 4 Wooded Foothills, or 4 Bloodstained Mire, or $50 in store credit

- With 20-29 entrants @ $20 each, give out the following guaranteed prizes:
1st place - 4 blue dual lands* + 4 Tarmogoyfs or 4 Force of Wills or 4 non-blue dual lands, or $180 in store credit
2nd place - 4 blue dual lands,* or 4 Wooded Foothills + 4 Bloodstained Mires, or $100 in store credit
3rd place - 4 Polluted Delta, or 4 Flooded Strand, or $60 in store credit
4th place - 4 Polluted Delta, or 4 Flooded Strand, or $60 in store credit
5th-8th place - choice of 2 non-blue fetchlands, or 1 dual land* of choice

- With 30+ entrants @ $20 each, give out the following guaranteed prizes:
1st place - 4 blue dual lands* + 4 Tarmogoyf or 4 Force of Will or 4 non-blue dual lands, or $225 in store credit
2nd place - 4 Force of Will or non-blue dual lands + 4 Wooded Foothills or 4 Bloodstained Mire, or $125 in store credit
3rd place - 4 non-blue dual lands, or 4 Tarmogoyf, or 4 Force of Will, or $80 in store credit
4th place - 4 non-blue dual lands, or 4 Tarmogoyf, or 4 Force of Will, or $80 in store credit
5th-10th place - choice of 2 non-blue fetchlands, or 1 dual land* of choice

* = not including Underground Sea

Paying down further in standings also attracts more people, in my experience, as they usually have a better tournament experience even if they don't get 1st or 2nd place (where the normally very top heavy prizes have been). That may attract more of your regular Extended/Standard constructed players to attend as well. The thing I proposed seems like good prizes based on number of entrants to attract people, while the store should still be able to cover costs and not lose money. What do you think?

EDIT: Also, you really need to advertise/post these tournaments on other websites ASAP too, in order to attract the turnout you're hoping for.

Never in my personal experience has Pastimes ever outright refused to run an event if 8 or more people have shown up.  It is possible that we tried to change the prize structure, but even then if it has been advertised, we adhere to it.  For this last Vintage event there was a communication error between the store manager and myself causing our website to not be updated with the 25/25/25 rule.  This should no longer be a problem either as I now have admin privileges on the website.  If you could specifically tell me the circumstances under which this happened, I would be very interested to hear them.

Regardless, I'm the one responsible for events now, so it's a new ballgame.  Thanks for telling me where people check for tournies.  I'm supposed to look into that stuff.  How do people find out about the CoD tournaments?  That was a problem for us last weekend with the Vintage event.

All that being said, I'm always open to input on how to change these events so more people will come and so you'll all have more fun, so please keep the suggestions coming.

I was pretty sick when I woke up yesterday morning, and was thus unable to attend. It was Pastimes though, so I don't feel bad.

Do you want me to be able to host more tournaments or not?

Tezzeret sucked.  He was the worst card in my deck all day.  The one time I played him I lost.  Every game I won was Sundering Titan or Key/Vault after Yawg Will.

@ Gunslinga: The assertion that your deck is a "real deck" makes me sad in the pants.  Tezzeret is awful, but putting him in a Gifts Shell doesn't change his value.

Have you guys considered rocking the 25/25/25 rule and offering higher prize support?  It does tend to attract more people.

Consider it done.  I modified the post.  Please let people know about this guys.  It's drawing near and we need a decent turnout to keep doing them.  Prizes have been upped as well.  Come support me =D

Any other suggestions, by the way?

Is this pearl destroyed or actually in good condition?

It's pretty played.  Would more people show if there were more than 10 proxies?
16  Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Re: Pastimes Niles, IL - Vintage - Mox Pearl - Oct 18 on: September 23, 2008, 03:16:35 pm
Have you considered upping the proxy count?

Ben Carp has had substantially large turnouts at his tournaments which allow 25 proxies.

Just a heads up...

GWS will bring the pain!

I'll look into that.  I'll know by Thursday.

Pastimes will be hosting a Type1 tournament in April for an Ancestral Recall. Second place will receive a brand new foil regrowth.  If this tourney gets good attendance there will be future tournaments scheduled. These can be a great practice for SCG events and further establish the T1 metagame for the midwest. We had 36 last time, please help me keep this going.  Here is the info:

We will be having another one in a month or so.  Thanks to everyone who showed up.  For anyone interested, I lost to Goblins round one and drew with one of the people playing the secret deck (sorta) in round 5.  I lost to the secret deck in the T8.  I smashed Control Slaver rounds 2 and 3, Belcher in round 4, and U/W vial fish round 6.  There was a lot of Oath and combo.

I was the T8 gifts/oath player.  I never faced another oath deck.  I did play against stax 4 times.  Wastelands were certainly the biggest problem for the deck.
30  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: All Im Good For Is Winning Black Lotuses - vroman SCG report on: October 31, 2005, 05:42:00 am
unfortunately for this tournament I have a fairly long slops column
- whatever staff member is responsible for entering match results, who screwed up multiple times according to reports and definitely cost Josh Smith top 16 prize. sloppy work for you guys.
- Deleted
- pastimes new location is way smaller, and lacks amenities like more space to trade and those chinese ppl selling pizza. Im sure you cant help it due to whatever deal is being worked out behind your back, but I miss the old place.
- why give up on coverage?
- chicago's fucking tollways under construction costing me 90 minutes of stop and go and still charging me $1.90 both ways for the privelege of crawling along.
-rumor has it stax pioneer kevin cron got banned from pastimes until 2006 for walking in with an open beer. fascists. Attention vintage community: come play at my power tournaments and I will GIVE you cans of Ice House.

We had judges running ops for this tourney as all our usual ops guys were in other states or running major Yu-Gi-Oh! events.  It was a pretty sad state of affairs.  Sorry for all the result entry problems.  We're working on bringing Sbarro back in the future.  We've only been in the new space a couple weeks and aren't at all settled in yet.  We were worried about space as it is.  Hopefully we'll rearrange a bit to make things easier in the future.

I agree on the coverage thing.  Seems like SCG is starting to like us less.  I blame Legacy.

Grats again.
