Moonlight bargain/whatever draw spell, bloodchief ascension, mindcrank, contagion engine, myojin of night's reach. Requires roughly a billion mana Sanguine bond, exquisite blood, smallpox. Still very expensive. If everyone is lowish on life, just cabal coffers+exsanguinate. For single player there's the dark depths or helm/leyline combos.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Does anyone remember this old tournament report?

I was telling a friend about an epic tournament report, but couldn't recall all the details and want to find it again.
The protagonist of the report was on storm. Opponent has lethal on board and a Tormod's Crypt in play. Storm player cannot win without his Yawgmoth's Will. He ended up casting Will, allowing Crypt to remove his graveyard, but then before Will resolved creating a new graveyard at instant speed by going Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual... more shenanigans I can't recall. Eventually wins the match(/tourny, i think?) by braining really hard.
The report was super old- like, currently archived from a defunct site so that there wasn't any site formatting- and I have no clue where on this site I would have first read it. Nothing immediately leapt out at me from the 17 pages of the 'archived tournament reports' section. Anyone know where I could find this gem?

How do you think Grim Discovery compares to a straight up reanimation spell like Animate Dead? I've thought of running one or the other for a while but I'm rather undecided at the moment.
The Grim Discovery in my deck is less of an Animate Dead slot, and more of a Crucible of Worlds/Petrified Field slot. I like to double up on land recursion so I always have access to my Cabal Coffers/Buried Ruin. I think the only reason I mentioned it is that it can be really good in this type of deck, but it's easy to overlook since it's just a common lol.

I also run XD, but my playgroup disallowed tutors. It's funny how very different our decklists are I think I'll 'borrow' the triskelion/mikeus combo! A few goodies that might fit well somewhere in your list: pillow fort- imp's mischief, dystopia, arena of the ancients, mindslicer misc- rings of brighthearth recursion- chainer dimentia master, grim discovery fun alternative win-cons: sadistic sacrament, nightmare incursion The only thing I would definitely change out is terror for doom blade or (more likely) go for the throat. Beyond that I like your list a lot. It's hard for me to offer too much constructive criticism though- a lot of your choices would be a bit bland in my slower XD deck, but I can't comment on their efficacy in a faster, tutor-centric build.

I also can't tell if you're moving or trolling. If the former, welcome! I live in NC too, but in Winston-Salem (about the same distance from Raleigh/Durham as you, but in the opposite direction). The only vintage tournies that've happened in the past few years have been in/around Asheville (other side of the state from you), or here: http://www.scifigenre.com/store/Durham shouldn't be too bad of a drive, although their vintage tournies might have come to an end. They used to be quarterly, but i haven't heard about one in awhile. Any rate- kudos to you if you're serious about kickstarting vintage here. Also... New Bern? I had to look at a map to figure out where you were moving...

Karakas? Unless Emrakul is a huge player in your meta, i'd think that would be better as another plains. Just seems highly waste-able without enough upside.
Am I missing an application?

I had completely forgotten about The Troll Hunter! Awesome flick. In a similar vein, I saw the movie Rubber at the same film festival where i saw troll hunter. It's about a psyckokinetic, serial-killing tire. Freaking hilarious (borderline British humor). Definitely worth a watch, and i know it was on netflix once upon a time. Maybe still? I totally agree that rubber was amazing. Did it come out this year? I thought I saw it a while ago Woops. IMDB says 2010. My b

Any ideas what could be cut for it?
Elves of Deep Shadow? It doesn't play well with a few other cards in the deck, and you would probably have enough mana ramp without it. Or maybe Rise from the Grave? It seems to be the worst reanimate effect currently in the deck (not being attached to a beater and not as well-costed/utile as Necromancy), so the Necronomicon would be a strict upgrade. And by replacing one reanimate effect with another reanimate effect, you aren't making your deck overly graveyard dependent (although I'm not sure that's a concern of yours given the theme of the deck). A few more cards I thought of- Geth, Lord of the Vault is an absolute bomb in edh, as well as a zombie. And to answer your earlier question about zombie-related equipment, Nim Deathmantle! Heh, although it's probably not good enough to make the current cut. Also- have you considered adding an Inkmoth Nexus in place of a basic land? It gives you an "Oops, I win" factor in drawn out games b/c of your proliferate engines, and you wouldn't need to cut any flavor to add it.

zombies- vengeful pharaoh (seems like it would be a mummy, but its creature type is zombie. obvi useful with discard stuff like zombie infestation), withered wretch, malevolent awakening, scrabbling claws (the last two are just useful cards with zombie flavor)
trees- seedguide ash, nemata grove guardian (nemata especially fits the token subtheme)
death and destruction- maelstrom pulse (might be a pricey card in your doran deck that you were talking about?), plague boiler
Hope some of these ideas help!

Both of the decks in this thread cut necro without really giving a reason why. It seems so strong and reliably castable with 3~4 cobras and 8 fetches. Is the concern gushbond damage and necro playing together poorly? I would think the skull makes the cut over a mind's desire/fact or fiction/vendilion clique (i understand the OP wanted to make a beats deck and prob made cuts to support that, but with only 3 cobras and 1 clique i would probably give up the ghost).
Full disclosure: I have no playtest experience with a cobra gush deck. If my instinct is wrong, please tell me as much/why.

Glenn Godard of Sunmesa Events has confirmed that there will be a Vintage 8-man tournament at Dragon*Con (in Atlanta: www.dragoncon.org). Incidentally, this year's gaming Guest of Honor at Dragon*Con? None other than Richard Garfield himself. I asked him about the possibility of running an unsanctioned proxy event to draw more players, and he told me that if we could get 10 or more people, it'd happen, with a "cool prize". So let's make this happen and bring Vintage back to the south. Within a week we'll have the full proxy rules and entry fee worked out. Feel free to throw suggestions my way - I'm also @JoshJMTG on twitter and a writer for www.quietspeculation.com. If you're going to Dragon*Con, send me a message! Proxy schemes I'm familiar with: - 10proxy - 15proxy - X proxies with $1/proxy after that, to some proxy cap where proxies have to be basic lands to avoid potential confusion. PM'ed you about this, but I'm not sure it went through. Hit me up if not!
