But if I am not mistaken, the example Moxlotus gave was not "you burn for 3", but that your opponent taps three islands for a mainphase Intuition although they still have Drain mana in their pool. And this case is exactly like the Mana Leak one and there is no way you have to ask your opponent whether he is sure he likes to do that since you are misrepresenting absolutely nothing. It is absolutely possible that having in their pool is exactly what your opponent wants, for example if it won't matter because he wants to play an artifact for anyways.

@49 cents: Ive done that too, actually a couple of times, he went nuts in the game, he casted 3 cranials naming replenish, form and confinement, he figured i had no win left, so he asked me to give up. I didn't because all i needed was to dig up a lotus to hardcast three squees and ride them to victory Casting three Squees is tech, seeing how they are all legendary.

pardon the OTP, but did anyone notice the complete lack of free coverage on SCG? They gave nothing to the non-premium users - NOTHING, squat, bubkus...not one fucking iota of information, not even a top8 list. I can't be the only one WTF-ing this!
[All 110 Decklists Will Be Posted Shortly!] And as deck lists are free, you get a "fucking lot of information". Don't whine.

As you can see, there was no spell resolving because he said he had no mana in his pool, if you don't have all the information don't post such about it, please. And yes, I ruled it as a warning, Rudy appealed and the Head Judge confirmed my ruling.
It seems like you don't have all the information. In any case, you didn't even give Daniel a warning at first. Also, just because the HJ made a ruling, doesn't mean it is the correct ruling. Well, I talked to both of you for quite some time to make sure I get all the information. I repeated the state of the game the same way I did in this thread and the players agreed on it. And of course I did announce to give him a Warning which lead to the appeal. @Jaapmans: Of course there is always the possibility of cheating, but I was quite convinced it wasn't the case there.

They Judges made some really dumb rulings in the end...
Cheating by not saying you have mana left and then when a spell resolved saying that you had mana left and only getting a warning...
( i dont know the exact details you shouldask Rudy for it )
The situation was that the player in question tapped his Academy (3 artifacts) and his Mox Jet to play two AKs. Appearently he forgot that one of the artifacts was a Helm of Awekening and answered "Zero" when he was asked how much mana was in his mana pool. When his opponent REBs the AK he notices that really he does not have zero but two mana in his mana pool. As you can see, there was no spell resolving because he said he had no mana in his pool, if you don't have all the information don't post such about it, please. And yes, I ruled it as a warning, Rudy appealed and the Head Judge confirmed my ruling. @Eddie: I don't know about the situations you described, but generally calling all the judges stupid is just dumb. @racetraitor: Daniel Eufinger played a version of Sensei, I think.

lol Kerith, you obviously haven't played the game in depth...after 3 days you're no where near PvP ready so how would you know anything about the game past that point? Unlike Diablo, dueling skills and strategies far outreach items and play time.
Is it just me or is "lol" not the nicest way to start talking to someone? Well, why would I play a game in depth when it bores me after a few days? Perhaps PvP is good if you played some time, but how can I bothered to last through all those hours of play that is totally uninteresting to me if I could just pick up a game that is actually made for duelling like Starcraft, Warcraft or one of the many FPSs?

He doesn't know that you have 11 counterspells in your hand, and you're actually not allowed to reveal your hand to opponents in the course of a game unless a card instructs you to do so. Err .. since when exactly are you no longer allowed to reveal your hand? That would be a dumb rule that could not be enforced either. Of course you can show your opponent your hand as long and as often as you wish.

As for WoW, I still don't get what people find so amazing about it. I played the beta for a few days and got bored. It is probably the lack of competition since, well, everybody can achieve anything in WoW if he/she has enough time at hands. That is a little strange. Yes, you can achieve everything in wow: if you play for hundreds (thousands?) of hours you can. But if you would practice any other computer game for so much time.. well then you're pretty 1337 too. What I mean is that you just by playing the game you get all the "rewards" (high level, items and such). You don't have to get much understanding of the game, get better or even pay much attention most of the time. All in all you don't really practice anything, you just walk around and look at the enviroment.

I don't think there is a good RTS game but since you're planning on waiting a bit longer: Red Alert 2 is said to come out in the summer.
Well, you are right, Warcraft 3: TFT ist not a good RTS game but a great one. I'd definately recommend it, although depending how fed up you are with Starcraft you might rather want to get into another genre. As for WoW, I still don't get what people find so amazing about it. I think the point is he Forced something, paying one life and died next turn to the Vortex. Hm .. he didn't say that he has hand cards other than Skeletal Scrying. But those situations happen. My personal favorite is stabilizing at 1 life and then, after a few turns, tapping a CoB for mana.

Where is the point? Did you cast Scrying because you thought you gained life from the Ex. Angel? All you can do is attack with the token and hope that he doesn't have two must-counters. /edit: Oh .. you owe me $1

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Annul in U/R Fish
|
on: September 06, 2004, 12:02:37 pm
|
I have won entire games by Countering Moxen with Annul or Mana Leak, so I'm biased here. Paying U to deprive the opponent of a Mana Source is a potent tool, especially for a Tempo Deck. The only games you win, or rather don't lose, because you counter Moxen that I can think of are games where they have Welder and a target in their graveyard but nothing to exchange for it. But perhaps you can give me some examples? Also, that argument is really hypocritical if you run Oxidize in WTF/r, because half of its original justification for being in the MD was Mox Removal. The thread is about "U/R Fish", so I assume we are talking about Gay/r. Again, I think the virtual Tempo argument is also weak. The same can be said for any Answer in Magic. Plow is pretty bad when there are no creatures on the board, but that doesn't stop us from running it. If you think Annul's "Virtual" Tempo is bad (God I hate these Tempo Babble Terms), you obviously didn't play with Stifle which was much worse. To compare Plow in 4cc with Annul in Gay/r are is plain bad. Plow handles creatures that are in play, not just those that are being played (can you see 4cc running Remove Soul?), so you don't have to keep W open AND 4cc is not stricly a tempo based deck like Gay/r is. Also I did play with Stifle (to be exact, never with less than 4 between maindeck and sideboard before CoW became popular) but Stifle is an answer to things that you have no other answers for. The card may not be Mana Drain, but I can assure it has single handedly turned around more games vs Stax and company than I care to remember. Fish needs more hard counters vs high threat density decks, and Daze doesn't cut it. If your not satisfied countering 4cc's Moxen and Crucibles, board Annul out for REB. Hm .. how often did you play the 4cc on Gay/r matchup, if I may ask?

You say, that Annul is good, partly because it can counter Moxen. But countering Moxen is horribly inefficent (CMC(Annul) > CMC(Mox)). (edit: "you" != chaos blade, but all those who stated Moxen (or rather mana acc.) as possible Annul targets)
Also, since you have to keep blue mana open because they might have something costs you tempo. This is the same problem that causes Annul to be weak in Mirrodin block draft: While there are a lot of artifacts, you have to counter the first they play most of the time because you certainly don't want to give your opponent a free Time Walk by holding Annul (Time Walk because if you always keep U open you virtually missed a land drop).
So, Annul can be very good, but I rather play cards that are always good, at least in the maindeck.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / arcane spells revealed...

There might be more to arcane that this, but at the moment it seems like a so-so version of kicker. More options in terms of effect, but it requires two cards. It requires you to have both in hand, but since you can still cast Blessed Breath after you "spliced" it, I would rather compare it to Equipment for arcane spells, since you can just hold the Breath and splice it onto any arcane you cast, again and again.

Fish has 6 manlands .. but Evilkin's list has only 4 (no Conclaves), making it not only much more unlikely to have one in play by turn 2, but also making it more unlikely to get a second one when the first one is wasted. So you have 4 manlands, while your opponent most likely has 4+1 wastes (only 2 decks did not have them in the Worlds T8 .. and one of them was Belcher), and you play second turn Standstill with Flying Men/Lavamancer and Mishra on the board. Now your opponent wastes the Mishra .. and suddenly has all the time in the world. While it is usually correct to break Standstill ASAP, it is not if all your opponent does is attacking for 1.

Typically, you cast turn 1 Flying Men or Grim Lavamancer with Daze back up or FoW, then follow that with Standstill on turn 2 which is a very common play. Quite often certain decks will attempt to break this lock right away and you will normally have a FoW plus Daze to use immediatly with a typically good hand. An opposing control deck would immidiately break the Standstill .. why? You have a 20-turn-clock in Flying Men, somewhere around 15 for 'Mancer, so unless you also have double Mishra, there is absolutely no reason to ever break this "lock" right away.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Mana Vault + Damping Matrix(+ question for bonus points)
|
on: August 23, 2004, 06:35:10 am
|
Mana Vault , Artifact Mana Vault doesn't untap during your untap step. At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay . If you do, untap Mana Vault. At the beginning of your draw step, if Mana Vault is tapped, it deals 1 damage to you. : Add to your mana pool. The untapping is a triggered ability that is put onto the stack "At the beginning of your upkeep". When it resolves, you either pay 4 and untap it or you don't. There is no activated ability involved, so Damping Matrix has no effect there. That also means that you can Stifle the trigger, but once it resolves, you can't do anything about it.

While Blood Moon is not too good against this deck, as Cloud still cycles and Voidmage Prodigy has Morph, what keeps me from playing it myself is the horrible horrible anti-synergy with Standstill. Those two cards just work together in no way. The CMC of 3 means you usually can drop Standstill not before turn 4, and that only if you have a basic Island. Also, it weakens the Standstill drastically because it destroys your manlands. Somehow, I can also imagine 4cc players beating you up with face-down Angels, destroying your creatures with Fire, after you resolved Rod/Moon because you don't have any threats left yourself.

Attacking the manabase is a lot harder to do than it sounds. I have tried this strategy, and it is very difficult to do. Realize that you need to draw 2-3 of your Wasteland/Strip Mine, drop a Null Rod (and keep it in play), and have your opponent not draw Fetchlands and/or Tundra. All that makes it nearly impossible to deny the 4CC two white mana for the entire game. Usually, after boarding versus 4cc I have: 4 Null Rod 1 Shaman 4 Stifle 4 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine for mana denial (or, more specific: white mana denial). It works quite good, so maybe mana denial is the right strategie to deal with Exalted Angel. Or rather was .. up to the introduction of the Evil Thing (c) that is Crucible of Worlds. Now you can disrupt them all you want, they will just drop the CoW and undo all that. Now I sure don't want to compare CoW to Yawgmoth's Will, but it has a similar impact on the game by allowing them to refill their resources (the mana producers the matchup is mostly about) and letting them recycle their removal (wasteland). I think the mana denial plan was naturally superior to any other plan against 4cc. So if we now have to use another plan to beat 4cc, does the matchup not get worse? Can Gay/r keep up with more and more lists packing more and more CoWs, or does the stabilizing effect the CoW has on everybody's mana base make Gay/r obsolent? .. or am I totally wrong?

I tried the Drake plan some time ago and I ended up drawing a Drake in the early turns, where it does absolutely nothing, ways too often. Gilded Drake is simply too narrow in the 4cc matchup, denying them WW is much better. As for the Shaman/Vandal: I tried replacing the Shaman and another card for two Vandals, but the only time they really shined for me was when my opponent had a CoW and no instant win with it. Sadly, Vandals make a bad Curiousity target, so I am not sure if I keep them.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Storm
|
on: August 01, 2004, 07:15:33 am
|
No. Storm puts copies of the spell on the stack while it counts spells played this turn. You only played a spell if you announced it, payed the cost and put it on the stack "the normal way". Note that this normally means that only cards on your hand can be played, exceptions are Isochron Scepter and Panoptic Mirror. Storm The official rules for the storm ability are as follows:
502.30. Storm
502.30a Storm is a triggered ability that functions while the card is on the stack. "Storm" means "When you play this spell, put a copy of it onto the stack for each other spell that was played before it this turn. If the spell has any targets, you may choose new targets for any number of the copies."
502.30b If a spell has multiple instances of storm, each triggers separately. The number of copies is set when the storm spell is played. Count only spells that were played (by any player) before the storm spell was played.
The copies are put directly onto the stack -- they aren't played. That means the copies aren't counted by other storm spells played later during the turn.
Each storm spell with a target allows you to change the target for each copy of that spell. You make that choice for each copy individually.
When counting spells played in a turn, you do count spells that were played face down and spells played from zones other than a hand.
A copy of a spell can be countered, just like any other spell, but each copy has to be countered individually. Countering a storm spell won't counter the copies of it.

Planar Portal + Beacon of Tomorrows is my pick. Now, the best way to ramp up to 14 quickly... hmm, Elves are always fun. I might just have to work on a decklist for this, out of boredom. The winner of last Duelmen's T2 tourney used Planar Portal + Beacon of Tomorrow as a sideboard plan vs. "slow decks that don't counter" in his U/W control deck iirc

I am not entirely sure why the single sphere of resistance was included, because it is not really a good substitute for the 3spheres. My guess would be that the Sphere of Resistance is 3Sphere #5, since 4 3Spheres are in the deck and against many decks, their effects are similar.
