I'd love to see Chapin.  Also, as many have mentioned, Roland would be a great addition. He's an accomplished player and I think he would provide good commentary and analysis.  Another idea is to invite whoever the next Vintage Champs winner is as an additional part of the prize.

Will Dragons of Tarkir cards be legal for this?
6  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: Vintage around NYC? on: November 23, 2014, 01:43:49 pm
Thanks Samolt.  I'm going to try to bring a deck back to NYC this January.  Are most of these tournaments 10 proxy?  I'm thinking if they are that I'll leave my power 9 back home and just proxy the power so I'm not worrying about having that much money in cards out here.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: Vintage around NYC? on: November 22, 2014, 03:02:26 am
Thanks guys.  That's great to know that there is still some activity here.  I'm going to send you a PM Changster.  I probably won't be able to attend anything until next semester as I'm finishing up final papers for this semester and I don't even have any cards here.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Vintage around NYC? on: November 21, 2014, 06:45:40 pm
Hi, I apologize if this is common knowledge or posted elsewhere, but I'm wondering if there are any places to play Vintage around the NYC area?  I recently moved to Brooklyn and am going to grad school at NYU.  All my power cards are sitting in a safety deposit box at a nondescript bank in a nondescript city in the Midwest.  I'm going home for Christmas and if I knew that I could play periodically out here, I might bring the cards back.  I haven't played in a Vintage tournament since 2005 (Control Slaver!!) and would love the opportunity again.  Seems like there are a lot of postings for tournaments around Philly and Boston.  Is there any activity around me?  Thanks for any help.  And, no, I'm not interested in MODO Vintage.  I'm glad it exists, but it's not for me.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Story time - The quest for the Black Lotus on: March 16, 2013, 06:40:59 pm
I bought my first lotus probably around 2003.  I bought it from a local card shop and paid $325.  It had a small crease in the top corner.  A year or so later I traded that lotus plus $50 to a friend for a signed one in played condition - but looks nice in a sleeve.  I still have that Lotus.  The Lotus with the crease was sold on ebay by my friend to someone in Spain for around $550.

I had wanted a BB lotus however.
A couple years ago I bought a Moderately played Beta Lotus from SCG.  They sent me scans of a couple MP ones and one was in very nice condition, could possibly be SP.  So that's the one I bought.  I thought at the time that SCG's prices on BB lotuses was a little below market even compared to what I was seeing on ebay.  A couple months after buying my lotus they hiked the prices up on them quite a bit.  Now a MP lotus is twice what I paid.

So now I have a signed Unl lotus and a Beta Lotus.  I'd like to get an Alpha one someday...
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Karma - Chinese Tolarian Academy on: January 28, 2013, 03:26:40 am
I want it.

My first cards were a starter pack of Revised (like many other's I'm sure).  I remember the first time I played against an actually well build deck when playing someone outside of my playgroup.  It was at boy scout camp and I played an older guy who had a control deck that used Serra Angel.    I remember the deck also had Maze of Ith.  I'd never seen that card and this guy would destroy me every game.  Then my friends and I all had to get Maze of Ith.  I remember my friend's mom got him a Shivan Dragon.  He was a rich kid.  The card was $15 and I couldn't believe someone would pay that much for a card.  (I just bought a Summer Blue Elemental Blast today...)  His dog later bit into that Shivan Dragon!  Karma!!!

Thanks for the response Marc, oh and you need to edit your profile to say, "2012 Vintage World Champion."  You earned it.
13  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Podcast] So Many Insane Plays -- The Vintage Championship Interviews on: August 27, 2012, 10:59:25 pm
Great podcast.  I really enjoyed the interview with Mark. I found his statements about Dredge really interesting regarding how he claims that its prominence is stifling diversity in other parts of the metagame.  It's a little discerning to hear that he looked around and saw everyone, right and left, playing the deck, including his opponent.  Perhaps a result of a non-proxy tournament in a country with little real power left.

Also, I was curious to know how well Library of Alexandria performed for the two Blue decks in the top 8.  Is 4 Bob and 2 Jace enough to keep your hand size high enough that Library's ability offsets it's drawback of colorless mana?  I was surprised and, for nostalgic reasons, happy to see that card in their deck lists.

That card is sick.  Nils Hamm continues to impress me.  One of the best contemporary mtg artists imo.

This still doesn't explain why they got rid of the promo card exception which allowed them to reprint reserved list cards in FTV and Judge Foils etc.  That to me is the big mystery.
16  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Rumors/Previews/mtg.com articles on: February 29, 2012, 07:59:35 pm
With the Reserved List loophole closed, these FTV sets just aren't nearly as exciting to speculate on.  I feel like half the coolness of the FTV originally was that it was a way for them to print reserved cards.  They should really just stop doing the whole FTV thing, as I see it as sort of a joke now.
17  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Cards you are embarrassed to not have on: October 12, 2011, 03:36:59 pm
I own lots of very expensive Type 1 and legacy staples.  People where I play know this because they watch my friend and I play Type 1 between Standard rounds for fun.  But I get shit for playing Janky Standard decks because I refuse to invest money in cards that will only be good in Standard.  So I basically play with cards that I get from trading stuff I pick up at release events and the occasional pack I open for kicks.  But I enjoy playing my quirky Type 2 decks because they are fun.  I only really build serious decks in Type 1 and Legacy because I don't mind investing in the cardboard.   That being said I will pick up Standard cards that I know will be good in eternal formats.  IE, I already have a playset of Snappers, that I miraculously traded a bunch of worthless cards I pulled in limited for.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / Elder Dragon Highlander Forum / Re: SCD - Chaos Orb - Proposed errata for local rules play. on: September 15, 2011, 01:30:27 pm
Suggesting it as a House Rule or something that the Commander rules people could adopt specifically to make the card playable for EDH.  Although the DCI could still make an errata for the card along the lines of what I'm proposing and continue to keep it banned due to motor skills reasons.
19  Vintage Community Discussion / Elder Dragon Highlander Forum / Re: SCD - Chaos Orb - Proposed errata for local rules play. on: September 14, 2011, 09:42:07 pm
The templating is a little loose now I agree.  I just wanted somethign workable for the discussion.  But I figured that it was obvious that you couldn't stack cards.  I think that would be clunky to have in the errata text.  Seems more like something that would be added as a DCI ruling to clarify.

21  Vintage Community Discussion / Elder Dragon Highlander Forum / SCD - Chaos Orb - Proposed errata for local rules play. on: September 13, 2011, 05:08:27 pm
http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?22095-SCD-Chaos-Orb-Proposed-errata-for-local-rules-play.

I started a similar thread over at the Source but I am more interested in hearing people who actually played when Chaos Orb was legal and I think I might have a better chance here.  Below is my original post and some follow up comments.

I started playing magic back in 94 and Chaos Orb was considered one of the best and most feared cards. I remember getting all my lands blown up by Chaos Orb multiple times. The rule at the time was that once someone played Chaos Orb you could not move your cards and when Chaos Orb landed on a card it destroyed all the cards underneath it. This was a problem for a dorky 6th grader like myself because I stacked my lands on top of each other.

Now that I have given you some history about my experience with Chaos Orb I want to discuss a local rule errata for playing this card amongst your commander group.

The first question to ask is; Why do you want to play with Chaos Orb?
For me much of commander is the nostalgia element that it provides me. My deck has many of the old school cards that I wanted to own back when I was a kid by my weekly $5 allowance wouldn't allow. Chaos Orb is one of those cards.

There are two reasons that Chaos Orb is banned in constructive Vintage Play. The first reason is because it messed with the playing field because people don't want to have their cards too close to each other so as not to get X for oned. The second reason is because it requires manual dexterity.

The manual dexteritiy reason should not really apply to commander because it is a casual format and hell, shuffling a 100 card deck is a lot more physically difficult than dropping a card onto the table.

The real issue when addressing an errata to make Chaos Orb legal is the first issue dealing with playing space and spreading out cards. Thus to address that issue I propose the following errata:

1, Tap: If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, chose another card on the battlefield and flip Chaos Orb onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Chaos Orb turns over completely at least once during the flip, destroy the chosen card if Chaos Orb touches it upon landing. All equipments and auras on the chosen card are also destroyed. Then destroy Chaos Orb.

This errata makes it so that you actually chose (though not target) the card you want to destroy and does away with the problem of people having to spread cards out. In a way it makes Chaos Orb worse because you usually only get a 1 for 1, making Chaos Orb essentially a colorless vindicate with the downside of missing.

I added the part about destroying equipments and enchantments attached to the chosen card because it fits in with the flavor of the card and also pays homage to the history of how the card function in that it destroyed any card under the card Chaos Orb was touching.

I plan on testing this errated version of Chaos Orb next time I play commander. I'll let people know about it before the game since it is technically a banned card in EDH. However, I think with this errata it is a very fair card for EDH and also makes for a fun game event. One of the nice things about Chaos Orb is that since it doesn't target, it can take out a creature with Lightning Greeves as well as taking out the equipment.

Please let me know your thoughts on this errata and the use of Chaos Orb in EDH play.

Follow Up Post:

I should re-iterate that one of my goals when coming up with an errata was to try to best preserve the original functionality and flavor of the card while mitigating the problems that the card created for the game state. I wanted to change the card to solve the play space problem but still have it "feel" like you are playing the original Chaos Orb. I think the flipping the card and having it destroy what it lands on it integral to this and any errata that removes that element of the card ultimately defeats the purpose.

I see the manual dexterity issue as a non-issue for EDH and thus the only problem I am trying to solve is the issue of people spreading their cards out to avoid getting "X for oned" on the flip.

I guess I should ask - do people think that the manual dexterity element of the card is actually an issue for EDH?

Also I would be interested in hearing from someone who played back when Chaos Orb was legal, and what they think about the proposed local rule errata.

Thought so. Smile  I still have a special place in my heart for Forcefield.  It's a fun EDH card.

I enjoyed the list and analysis.

Forbidden Alchemy looks like a decent replacement for the restricted Thirst for Knowledge in a blue deck that runs Goblin Welder.
24  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Vintage Avant-Garde: Indetifying Trends and Reading "The List." on: September 13, 2011, 04:00:29 pm
"...if they ever give Illusionary Mask or Forcefield some unreasonable errata he might be the next one knocked out of the Power Nine!"

I realize that this statement was probably tongue in cheek, but what errata could they possibly give either of these cards to make them on the level of P9?

I Have listened to all the podcasts and really enjoy them.  I would echo some of the comments about the volume level on the microphones in the earlier ones.  Hopefully that is improving.  Also, I might be in the minority on this, but I'm not crazy about the recent discussion (in episode 5) of hypothetical game states.  I would rather hear more general strategy/card discussion as opposed to dissecting particular game states.
28  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: The Unbroken on: August 12, 2011, 12:41:18 pm
Some powerful cards in my EDH deck that in my fantasy land would be good in Type 1:

Future Sight (Already mentioned above. It's usually the first thing I tutor for in edh)

Forcefield - could be decent against shop decks, stops a tinker bot.  Gets through some sphere effects and gives another permanent to tangle wire.

Gilded Drake and Bribery.  More tinker bot hate.
29  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: StarCity's new buy list on: April 08, 2011, 05:38:23 pm
I find this whole thing rather amusing since I have play sets of just about every decent Vintage/Legacy card.  But if I were trying to get into the format I would be really annoyed.  Force of Will is $90.  I actually remember specifically paying $9 for one many years ago that's a part of my play set.
30  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Help me pick a booster box! on: April 08, 2011, 05:34:34 pm
I have been playing since Revised and have never bought a box.  I keep telling myself I need to someday but then what do I do with all the worthless cards?  Stick em in a box to put in the closet?  Give to some kid at the store?  Seems like the best option.
