Blightsteel seems like a much worse Show and Tell fatty than Emrakul, even in Tinker decks, blightsteel is clunky and often not the best wincon. If Tinker could grab up an Emrakul, there would be no blightsteels in vintage.
Also, i think you need some game against whatever your opponent drops in with show and tell. Against shops, I think I would board in Angel of despair to kill whatever fatty/golem they show

One of the best 1 drops ever printed.
The more I think about it, I think this is true. At first I suspected this was RtR's replacement for Birds of Paradise, but combined with grave hate, life gain, and lose life ability, it's just insane. I imagine this will work wonders in the same slots you'd run a Noble Hierarch in. The fact that it works in mono black is just gravy.

This card seems sweet in legacy, I don't know how well it would fare in Vintage though. I'm sure some deck would want it in it's 75, just due to it's versatility. This guy is a pseudo Birds of Paradise if you use it along with fetchlands/strips/wastes, and it can act as pinpoint grave hate (although much, much weaker than Scavenging Ooze in that regard). What's nice is that it gives the player a lot of optionality, both in its hybrid casting cost and as far as lines of play once it's on the battlefield.

- Haste is an ability that helps a lot versus Jace.
Agreed, I think this is a reasonable sideboard card for decks that cannot generate 4 mana for Slash Panther versus any blue deck with Jace, Snaps, and Yawgwill. I don't think I'd ever play this maindeck though, since it's such a dog against shops (which are about half of my meta) and it doesn't do anything broken.

What would you say the role of empty the warrens is in a deck like east coast wins? Maybe I'm completely off on this because I didnt build the deck, but I always thought the purpose of empty was to put pressure on your opponent or protect yourself with an early mini storm and then you have the option of winning off 1 swing late in the game. I think this card does both of those things. Now yes you can't swords, bounce, or chump empty, which is obviously a huge drawback to Nivmagus when you compare them. However, if I have nivmagus out the turn before I storm you cant counter it, with flusterstorm/mindbreak trap, and it essentially has haste making it better in those aspects for going off. I also dont even need to be playing red at all, making my 4 color mana base a 3 color one. It really just gives so many more options on how to play a scenario which I always think is a good thing.
Your point is a valid one, I guess the reason I don't think this guy goes into storm combo is because once he's on the table, your opponent knows what's up, so to speak. It doesn't seem to hard to play around. I've playtested a few games, but it's still too early to tell what kind of shell this could fit into in vintage, if any at all.

As I said before, I have high hopes for this. I think the comparison to Tarmogoyf is relevant, but this card is nothing like Empty the Warrens. I see this as being much more viable in control than in Storm combo. The reason storm combo is (or should I say was) good is because of it's overwhelming resistance to counters and removal. I mean, you can't Swords to Plowshares or chump block an Empty the Warrens effectively. You don't want to sit back and dump all the cards in your hand to make this guy a 7/9 or whatever, but if you can get a few spells fed to this guy thoughout a game, it's comparable to RUG players Thought Scouring themselves for value. Also, with this guy, you can attack as a 1/2 and make your opponent play around it's built-in combat trick...

I think this card is Vintage playable, for the same reason Tarmogoyf is vintage playable; sometimes you just need a dumb beater.
PROS
- It's blue. - Unlike Goyf, is unaffected by 'yard hate. - Mental Missteps aren't useless against Shop G1 (if you run this MD...) - Creates utility out of dead spells versus Chalice @ 1 or 2 - If you opponent sides in Mindbreak Trap G2, side this in G3 for protection. - Aforementioned Flusterstorm shenanigans - Makes Ancient Grudge better in the maindeck
CONS
- It's a vanilla creature in vintage. - Has the unique disadvantage of being hit by both Red and Blue Elemental Blasts
I already ordered my playset for $10. Can't wait to beat down with Iron Man.

Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New Phyrexia Cards that Matter in vintage

As with anything else, the usefulness of Mental Misstep depends on one's metagame.
I'm from Mass, and around here Blue decks seem to outnumber Shops greatly. I'd maindeck it just to gun down Voltaic Key, D. Ritual and Spell Pierce. Especially V. Key, because a huge number of archetypes seem to be throwing in Vault/Key as their 2nd/3rd win con just because it's available.

I'm shocked Mental Misstep isn't on your list. Definitely the 4-of with the most potential for me.
Also, I really doubt Karn Liberated will see vintage play. Workshop mana doesn't pay for it, and at best it's a Vindicate every turn. Belcher would much rather have EtW as Belchers 5 through 8, and I really don't see a place for it at all in Shop lists.
Also, why suggest Geosurge and Karn for Belcher when the two obviously have dyssynergy with each other.

i dunno man, just having one Mox pretty much invalidates this guy's effect, against Shop it's even worse because they play 4-8 lands that make more than one mana (not counting Shop which I'm assuming you can't use to pay this tax).
I could very well be wrong about any potential this card has, but in testing I've come upon many situations where the Shop player would want to play a Workshop turn one, and Chancellor could buy a non-Shop player enough time to get at least one additional land drop before they are able to drop a Lodestone or Sphere off Workshop. Again, there are probably better ways to do this but this could be an option for some decks, especially those without access to FoW, but this card stops a lot of broken Shop openings on the play.

Chancellor of the Annex - 4WWW Creature - Angel You may reveal this card from your opening hand. If you do, when each opponent casts his or her first spell of the game, counter that spell unless that player plays 1. Flying Whenever an opponent casts a spell, counter it unless that player plays 1. 5/6
This card seems to have potential. Having one in your opening hand seems pretty strong against Chalice, and could give some decks a fighting chance against Shops on the draw. Though you'd want to play 4 to maximize the likelihood of having one in your opening grip, and it's almost always a bad topdeck.
Also might be useful in dredge since it's free, and is a decent Dread Return target.
Thoughts?

How often are you able to achieve metalcraft with Mox Opal when you have it in your opening grip? For a deck that doesn't need the color fixing and doesn't have the original moxen available to power it out turn one, it strikes me as an odd inclusion.
