Eternal Formats / Creative / Why 60 cards is NOT always optimal

First off, Lightning bolt cannot be exactly 1.5 times as useful as shock, because either card can be used to kill a welder, but only lightning bolt can be used to kill a 3/3 creature, which confuses the issue of whether its 1.5 times more powerful. Ok, so yes, i would agree with your argument that if you want to see one of these non restricted cards more often, increasing the count is the way to do it. However, you have to want to see it more than you would want to see a restricted card if you are going to 61 cards. If that is indeed the case, then it must be a pretty darn powerful card in your deck (perhaps your win condition). So why not cut something else out and return the deck to 60 cards by removing something else? not every non-restricted card you have in your deck can be as powerful as restricted cards or this one particular "win condition" card. Now you've increased your chances of drawing brokenness by 2% and this other powerful card by some percentage as opposed to a 61 card deck.

Nice report. It seems like we saw the appearance of several older-school decks here, with your report using oshawa to make it just shy of the top 16 cutoff (6-2-0) and phelan using rector tricks from what i heard to make it to the top 16, and 4cc to make it to the top 16... though none were able to make top 4, eh? By the way, I'm working in lab and reading simultaneously, and when i read "worst brassman ever" i laughed out loud and everyone looked at me. rock on frappie.

Wonderful tournament report. I brought four color control again, after using it during the summer when it was a powerhouse. I didn't see a significant amount of nonbasic hate, besides two times when i was cleaned out by sundering titan. I had been keeping up with the changes proposed as far as tinkering for the 11/11 dude. However, after trying these changes, an angel seemed much more reliable. Then I realized that the angel is only going to be getting me past the aggro matches and the key is cycling decree for tokens in the control slaver matchup. As rich told me at Newington, slaver is going to walk all over 4cc. So, the build that i used to get like 14th place is essentially the same as i used at the starcity games, minus an angel and plus crucibles. the deck pretty much just plays the crucible game, and takes forever to play. I think almost every match that I won went to time plus 5 turns.
I was particularly glad to read this report because one of my losses was to the meandeck creation, even when i started off with 3 force of wills in my opening hand. I went for what i thought was a critical block on a dark ritual after he had played 3 spells already, only to have him use some form of tutor to get yawg's will next turn and re-ream me. In hindsight, the land grant seems to be a good key play to stop. Besides running any number of stifles, I would be interested to hear what other people have done to stop the deck.
