Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Oath of druids in the current meta.

With the abundance of bounce effects in the format currently maybe it would be a good idea to run Akroma, Angel of Fury. She has protection from Blue and White, so bounce effects and things like swords to Plowshares are useless against her.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] Mono-U Fish

I think that the creature base could definately be improved. I would suggest running this creature base
4x Cloud of Faeries 4x Spiketail Hatchling 4x Flying Men 3x Old Man of the Sea
The reasoning is you need a One drop with evasion and Flying Men is the best at doing that. In my Opinion Old Man of the Sea is much better than Suq Ata Firewalker. Just because you steal your opoponents creatures and use it against them. I would rather have a Welder that I stole from my opponent thjan have there Welder dead. Just Because They cant really operate when you are swapping Juggys or Titans or Mindslavers for Moxes.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Do you Test Type One on a Regular Basis?
|
on: November 25, 2004, 12:20:50 pm
|
|
I test fairly regulary, I test every weekend. But what I think is jusdt as important is Goldfishing and getting a good understanding of what hands are keepable. I Goldfish alot, whether i'm watching TV are just sitting around. I went to the Lotus tournament in NJ just last weekend and I goldfished for a couple of hours the day before the tournament jsut fine tuning my deck. So I think that Testing is diffucult seeing as people on MWS rarely play good decks and sometimes you're just the only person who plays t1 near you. But i think testing can be replaced fairly well and I mean fairly by Goldfishing with the deck you are thinking about playing daily.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discussion] Adapting Tog to win in this metagame.
|
on: November 16, 2004, 05:40:00 pm

I was thinking of playing a UBg Tog deck this weekend at the Jersey Lotus tournament although I wanted to include multiple copies of Pernicious Deed. If you want the deck to play Red instead of green. You get the advantages of Rack and Ruin although in my opinion E.E. is worse than Deed which I think many people will agree with me on. I think that the list you listed doesn't really have a way of removing a weldre that resolves. Also in any deck that plays a Wish in its deck the sideboard is just as important as the maindeck. So could you put up a list of that too. Thank You

Eternal Formats / Creative / TPS the evolution

I dont know too much on the topic, but i would think that doomsday would be a bad matchup. Since they are just as fast if not faster and they have more disruption. Maybe playing a Brain Freeze in the Maindeck or the sideboard, depending on whether or not you play Cunning Wish would help. This spell can really mess up Doomsday after they set up their stack.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Decks that could find a niche in the current meta

The examples you are giving arer quite different. You are giving examples were you take out one part of a deck for a clearly superior part of another deck. You are talking about draw engines mostly. You can't combine two decks win condition because then the deck is less focused and does'nt really "know" what it's doing.

ctthespian, I posted a list of U/W/G oath and it did not get very good reception here. It was veiwed as a subpar version of both decks. You cant combine Landstill's strategy with another decks strategy becasue you dilute the strategy of both decks. Sorry for Spelling.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Is Meandeck Doomsday the five Proxy deck of Choice?

I think people may be overestimating the difficulty of the deck a bit. I have been playing combo for years in extended. Decks like Angry Hermit, TurboLand, Life Loop, Gobvantage. I got pretty quickly. I'm not trying to say I'm a master at the deck, but after 20 or so goldfishes I really noticed a difference in the amount of times I would get a faster kill and set things up "right". There are alot of budget players who aren't that good. I'm not saying I'm better but I have an 1880 some rating. So I think after 50 or so goldfishes a decent player will get a pretty good feel for the deck

First of all Hi-Val I don't run Mana Leak because I feel if everyone is playing oath with 14 counters that Misdirection is more helpful. I dont like AK/intuition becuause it costs alot of mana and is a 2 card investment for 3 cards +1 card advantage. Standstill is +2 card advantage and when Standstill is in play an oath for me is great as is any number of manlands or DOJ

The deck can play 2 different ways when it is under the still tapping of forbidden orchard isn't done much. When the still is gone you wanna drop oath and give the a token. Ideally you can drop a first or second turn oath and follow thatr with still with orchard in play.

OathStill... The deck is what i think is the next evolution of Landstill. Originally i was running U/G i posted that list a couple of days a go but quickly the deck began to run white as a third color. This gave me solid removal in the form of Swords and another win condition in Decree of Justice.
Decklist 4 Oath of Druids 4 Standstill 1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath 1 Spirit of the Night 2 Decree of Justice 4 FOW 4 Mana Drain 2 Misdirection 1 Recall 1 Time Walk 2 Swords 1 Gaea's Blessing 4 Brainstorm 1 Lotus 3 Moxen U/G/W 4 Forbidden Orchard 3 Fetchland 3 Tundra 4 Tropical Island 4 Mishra's Factory 4 Faerie Conclave 3 Island
SB 3 Ground Seal 1 Pristine Angel 1 Platinum Angel 1 Iridescant Angel 4 Naturalize 2 Control Magic 3 Energy Flux
Card Choices Oath and Standstill- The key components of the deck. DOJ- Win condition: although anti-synergistic with Oath it is very good after a Mana Drain or under Standstill. FOW and Mana Drain- Neccesary counters. Misdirection- I opted for this over Mana Leak as I think this will be better in an Oath of Druids heavy field. Akroma and SoTN- The main win conditions Stephen can explain why these are the best creatures. Swords- Good vs Oath first game, and good against aggro.
SB Card Choices The only thing that really sticks out is Naturalize. Not only does it kill Artifacts but it kills Oath, Chains, B2B in addition.
Mana Base I chose not to run strips or Loa as i wanted to still maintain a higher number of Islands.
Cards I cut from old Landstill Main thing is the Disk I just don't feel it has much of a place anymore and is replace better by Oath.
So there is the list tell me what you guys think i would really like to have your imput. Thanks.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Metagame Shifts: Debating the Future of Fish

well with permission from method here goes 3 Disk 3 Teferi's Responce 3 Crucible 4 FOW 4 Mana Drain 2 Misdirection 1 Time Walk 1 Recall 4 Standstill 4 Oath 1 Akroma 1 SOTN 1 Sol Ring 1 Lotus 1 Saphire 1 Emerald 1 LoA 1 Strip Mine 4 Wasteland 4 Mishra's Factory 4 Faerie Conclave 4 Tropical Island 4 Forbidden Orchard 3 Island I think this is the deck that most shows parallels to Fish. This list may seem janky but thats because it has onky been through goldfishing. And im pretty bad at testing so i need someone to help or do it for me. If you think the deck warrants its own discussion tell me and ill make a thread.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Oath of Druids - Is it the New Goblin Welder?
|
on: October 27, 2004, 05:46:07 pm

Stephen I may seem kinda of flip floppy but that statement really got me thinking. If Welder can survive through that much hate than Oath can. You have restored my faith in Oath with a single statement. So with that in mind i believe Oath has a real chance.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Oath of Druids - Is it the New Goblin Welder?

I really like Oath of Druids but i don't think its a Goblin Welder. It may be able to spawn many decks but eventually there will be so much hate that Oath will barely be able to survive. Plus Goblin Welder is so good against all the Artifact decks in addition to being very good in its own deck. So i think Oath will be good for a time but i think that time will pass.

the landstill i have been testing ran oath as an alternate win condition as oath under a standstill is quite good as i'm sure you have noticed, and after your and your teams performance at SCG 2 (by the way congrats) i really think that that may be a fairly decent deck. Also Stephen as you noted in your other thread decks are running more basic lands, that could mean an decrease in Crucibles. That could mean a chance for Landstill in some form(i would like it to play oaths) to return. Because now is the time for Oath and i believe that standstill is very good in the Oath mirror giving you the edge.

I don't think there can be a substitute to fish, but i think one deck that i've been testing that shows some parralels is oathstill. Though the win condition is very different the game is still about tempo. But more importantly the question you rose is is Fish still viable. My answer is No but as long as it costs as much as it does, and plays the way it does I think budget players will always turn to Fish as their first choice.

Eternal Formats / Creative / old man of the sea in Fish?

i disagree mixing mike i think that having an active welder yourself and therefore shutting down their win conditions by preventing them from attacking you, is better than hoping you have a counterspell for every threat that your opponent plays
Also could the deck cut a creature like spiketail hatchling and run both lavanmancers and old man? it definately seems feasible
