1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Single Card Discussion] Jester's Mask (NO, not CAP) on: April 06, 2006, 12:00:40 pm
I remember a friend of mine had a casual deck once.  He cast prosperity for a lot with mask in play, masked his opponent, then played wheel of fortune.

Back to the real world, yespuhryen was right that the cap has a powerful effect.  However, the effect isn't game winning, and costs a lot of time and mana.  As stated by others, it's interesting but not worth running.

Round 4 vs. A Cool Guy with GRIMLONG.

Sorry man, forget your name, even though I asked you it like twice.  Forgive me.

I lose the die roll.  Ugh.

Game 1 - I mulligan to six and keep the shadiest hand of the entire tournament.  It's like, Barbarian Ring, Mox, Mox, Mox, Sol Ring, Karn.  I figure if I draw into anything, I can cast it.  Yeah, that actually never happened.  Luckily, Karn put the pressure on him really early, and I somehow got enough threshold to Barbarian Ring him to death.
Game 2 - First turn Cap activation.  Sorry man.  Sad

Yeah, that was me.  Only I was playing tps, and not grimlong.

Game 2 i kept a hand like... force timesprial acadamy vault mox fetch.  So I play out my stuff, holding the acadamy.  Of course you go... ruby lotus acadamy (d'oh) cap (forced) welder welder, or something.  And rip the land to activate cap next turn.  T1 is dumb sometimes, but I enjoyed the day and enjoyed the match.  Congrats, and see you at the next richmond p9!

P.S.
Karn is amazing.  I tested the deck for a bit, and was totally satisfied with it in the dupe slot.

@ Evenpence

Why is maze better than karakas?

I have a vague memory of goblins in block running goblin assassin to deal with akroma, but that seems less than fesable.

I would have to second the note about karakas and stp.  Although, against gifts, do you really want to bring in 4 stp?  Most gifts lists are running one or two win conditions that don't involve the tin man- you might even be better off with abayence or orim's chant.

On a possibly unrelated note, I've been trying to find a replacement for duplicant in the oath matchup.  "Hope you draw it and they don't counter" never cut it for me- even with welders.

It seems like portcullis would do the same thing better.  If they hapen to give you two guys, then they will never oath as long as it's on the table.  And if you have welder, you can prevent their guys from ever entering play in the first place.  I do confess, though, that multiple copeis are necessary to prevent a removal spell from winning the game.

I've also had some success with the 'play karn and race' method, but that seems about as sketchy as the dupe plan.

Two of the restricted cards are almost necessary, time walk and crop rotation.  Beyond that, it gets fuzzy.

What cards do you want to tutor for? just bazaar?  That adds vamp and seal, but DT seems pretty much like a black sylvan scrying to me.  Is Entomb that much better than putrid imp?

Ancestral is fine, if you've got the commitment to blue.  It can be a first turn discard outlet, but it's still not much better than careful study.

What application does will have?  Replaying moxen?  Everything else it seems like you either don't need to replay or don't want to.

Would candelabra of tawnos be worthwhile?  It's another disruptive element, and gives you multiple bazaar activations.

Optimizing this deck is just an exercize in balance.

I have a question about the 1 solemn simulacrum.

I remember looking at a list for ubastax a while ago and seeing multiple solemn, so I assume they got cut down to one.  But today, I looked at the list for the first time in months.  What is one solemn really going to do?  What is its purpose?  It's not as powerful as trinisphere, where when you get one you feel lucky.  You only have 3 mountains to go and get; I suppose it's an uncounterable draw with welder, but welder has better things to be doing with his time usually.  Wouldn't you rather have a mountain or a gorilla shaman?
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: The real Dragon power;) on: October 16, 2005, 03:03:24 pm
A white splash would include no more than 2 cards main- probably none.  It's mostly sb material.

You get no xantid, but you still have duress.  Chant and abeyence function somewhere in between the two.

Sacred Ground has been discussed.

STP and balance are probably unnecessary because they are secondary to the function of the deck.  Opponent removal >> spot removal.

Basically, a white splash is about having your cake and eating it, too.  It could very well be that the deck operates best when the manabase and spells are streamlined, and all this discussion of pithing needle and wastelands is a result of 'the fear.'

I hate to be the devil's advocate but...

If the largest difference between ub and 5c dragon is just sacred ground, has anyone considered running ubw dragon?  This opens up other possibilities too, like weathered wayfarer and orim's chant.

so let me get this straight....
for 4 mana i get to:
preemptively stp one of my opponent's win conditions
look through his deck
make his wishes more versatile
give him a window to play one of his other threats

i don't see it.  any deck worth playing has multiple win conditions;
ant the very least you can expect to see tinker/colossus, if not qurion dryad or exalted angel.

if you have the chance to resolve this spell, and you do win the game, extraction probably didn't help.  unluss you opponent is playing tooth and nail- a well known and respected t1 archtype
