Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Advertising in Video Games

I actually agree with the concept. The vast majority of game companies are at least making a valid attempt to make a decent product. I would highly doubt that we would see any thing like a pepsi healing potion.
Things I WOULD like to see:
The Gatorade Drenching during vistories in various sports games.
REAL Billboards for games like Grand Theft Auto etc.
Real products used as props in various games set in our time frame.
If tastefully done it will be so seamless we won't even know it is happening.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Rogue: Has there ever been a better time for WW?

Ill post this for humor's sake. I brought this deck with me to the tournament expecting to play on the side, and entered anyways after making a few adjustments from Legacy to Type 1 (specifically going from 3 chrome mox to the configuration you see in the list)
Angel Stompy Mana 11 Plains 4 Ancient Tomb 1 Chrome mox 1 Mox Saphire 1 Mox Pearl 4 Tithe Critters 4 Mother of Runes 1 Isamaru, Hound of Konda 4 Savannah Lions 4 Silver Knight 4 Soltari Priest 4 Exalted Angel Control & Draw 4 Swords to Plowshares 3 Disenchant 3 Mask of Memory 3 Sword of Fire and Ice 4 Parallax Wave Sideboard SB: 1 Disenchant SB: 4 Seal of Cleansing SB: 4 tormod's crypt SB: 3 Decree of Justice SB: 3 Armageddon
The real winner for this deck is very often Parallax Wave. When it works it has managed to remove several creatures from the game at once for the few turns it will take for me to win.
The deck obviously has several MAJOR weaknesses, BUT its major strength is its consistent beats with the back up of removal from sword to plowshares and parallax wave.
This may be another decent place to start, but it seems that if there are bigger beats out there these little guys would get stomped.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Are Enough People Trying to Break T1?
|

The lack of development in the Type 1 metagame has less to do, in my opinion, with knowledge of what is broken and more to do with a lack of experience developing decks. I know that I, for example, have plenty of ideas as to what is broken, but I lack the experience to build it into a deck that could compete. As a result I have little choice but to tune and tweak the hard work of others.
Is it possible that another thread could be started where we all discuss deckbuilding methods? We could discuss some of the important stylistic differences in our testing. This could help some people refine their testing methods, and could help others to design their own decks knowing they are testing using the same methods as the big boys. It would do all of this while protecting the secrecy of the decks that the various teams/individuals are developing.
I think this might be more infuential to the metagame's stagnant state (if you want to call it that) than posting our theories as to WHY.

Eternal Formats / Creative / [Card Discussion] Serrated Arrows

and once again, another thread of mine is moved to the newbie forum, whats that make, 4 now? Either I am the shittiest magic player ever, or some people are just not open minded on this sight at all. God forbid anyone make suggestions to a deck that isn't the best of the best in the metagame. Stupid silliness. Not to be a dick, but if you read the description on the Vintage Newbie forum it does say that its a springboard not only for new players but for new members. Its possible that your 4 topics so far have been similar to questions posed by other newer members in the past. You'll notice that it being moved didn't hurt your discussion.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / 2 New Betrayers cards from Inquest worth a look

That is what I was getting at. We play in a format where a spell costs 0,1,2 or 3 mana or it just doesnt get played if it doesn't win the game. You can expect to have those mana costs in your deck. It may be viable in a mono-blue deck.
It isnt the best that is out there, but the fact that it is a pitch counter that COULD be hardcast to deal with lower mana spells gives it a merit.

Greetings,
Could anyone point me in the direction of, or give me, some instructions on The Highlander format and the Artist Format?
I'm interested in putting together some decks for them. They sound fairly interesting.
Thank you.

Ray,
If you need systems/controllers for the Mario Kart Tourney PM me and let me know. I'll happily lend them for the cause. (I have a functional X-box as well if that would come in handy for you)
I've only been to one Waterbury Tournament before, and was beaten soundly. I look forward to making a return, and being thrashed by all these folks one more time.

You stated in your article that FISH made a "meteoric" ascent to the top of the deck pile, and was at the same time unnoticed because noone thought it was as good as it is.
So, would you be suggesting that 5/3 will be dominant and under the radar for a while?
(that sounds like an interesting discussion of cause and effect right there)

I call foul.
You never said there would be a QUIZ!
I'll take a stab at it though. I definitely have a feeling that folks will be throwing a lot of attention in the direction of worshop aggro. I would even go so far as to say that it will be among the most played decks at Waterbury. The fact that the NE doesn't have a large number of Workshops will be a non factor considering the number of proxies being allowed.
Everyone NOT playing it will certainly jam in the hate, or at the very least give it more than a passing thought.
Don't beat me up if I'm wrong though. I'm just some guy.
Thanks, Stephen

Well written.
That must have been a pain for you both to research. I suppose though that with even more tournaments taking place this coming year that the 2005 year in review may be even harder to compile.
I'll admit it... I looked through my Champions stuff really quickly to see if there were any hidden gems I, and everyone else for that matter, didn't see yet. So far I haven't found anything.
Thanks,
Stephen

Eternal Formats / Creative / [SCG Article] "The Year in Preview" by Ben Bleiwei
|
on: January 04, 2005, 12:32:44 am

Workshop bazaar and ritual will never be restricted, this guy just writes random stuff in his articles and they have no meaning to anyone with any sense. The metagame as of right now is just about as balanced as I've ever seen it in the past year. Never say never. One author making claims that are not backed up to your liking does not produce a bad arguement overall. There are voices coming out of the woodwork all over the place to restrict workshop specifically. Workshop was UN-restricted right before 400+ artifacts were printed in Mirrodin block. The addition of those 400+ artifacts DRASTICALLY changes the effects of a card designed to make artifacts faster. I'm sure we can all agree that the Vintage Magic world was different before Mirrodin came around. As a result it is entirely possible that if the right people think that this new world we live in is broken... that they will try to fix it. Stephen

Eternal Formats / Creative / 10 Land Stompy, needs some tweaking...:)
|
on: January 04, 2005, 12:16:18 am

Typically X < 10 Stompy decks are casual. They simply don't have the tools to deal with what the big dogs of the format hit them with. They are broken in some regards... but not broken enough. The list Disco threw together for you looks to be pretty inexpensive to build. It may not be competitive though. Honestly, you may want to look into the other thread for a R/G deck. That one may be better suited to what you are looking for. If they are running Ravager style decks then R/G will have a better set of tools to help deal with it.
In such a janky metagame, I'd play FCG. With the standard rotation, its pretty cheap to build, and gives you access to R&R, Pulverize, etc. against ravager.
That is another stellar option. Food Chain Goblins is VERY powerful when played correctly. I have the pleasure of being beaten down quite handily by it on a regular basis. Good Luck, Stephen

Eternal Formats / Creative / Must have cards?

I looked over the "Essential list" That Ric_Flair posted.
It looks very comprehensive. I'm definitely taking it to heart. I've bought some things on Ebay already. (My fiance is going to punch me *smile*)
Now, I've been talking to some people I know abut priority in the list.
So far it looks like It should go:
Force Of Will Yawgmoth's Will Wastelands Blue Fetchs Blue Duals
Through some miracle I already have about half of those cards. I think some of the cards I dont have end up being commons and uncommons that I know I few people might have spares of.
My question ends up being if I should focus on any more cards because they are contained in A LOT of decks.. OR if I should shut up be a man and make a choice.
I recently managed to build an almost functional Belcher deck for a Waterbury tournament earlier this year. I typically enjoy playing combo, control or a combination there-of. What do you folks think?
Thank you very much for your input folks. I'm sure I'll figure it out at some pont.

Sometimes it depends on the type of decks you would tend to play.
That's a very good point. I honestly don't know what style of deck I would end up playing. I typically ENJOY playing combo and control. I suppose I should start there.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Must have cards?

Greetings,
After a frustrating performance at a Type 1 tournament earlier this year I decided to work to build my Type 1 card pool as opposed to just building "The Deck." I've been reading this site for well over a year now and thought I might ask for some advice from all of you.
I've spent a LOT of time looking through Ebay, Articles on SCG, the forums here, etc and I have seen some cards that are obvious choices: Force of Will, Fetch Lands etc. I also have a copy of the restricted list that I am slowly filling out (going on the assumption that if it's restricted it has to be at least OK to have.) I dont quite have the funds to purchase Power 9 cards, but I can certainly afford to buy cards around or below the cost level of FoW.
My question that I ask to all of you is: What cards should I push to acquire that will be quality cards and be versatile enough that I can use them in a number of decks?
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully, Stephen
