I don't think anyone has mentioned MolotDET as former staff, though he was here before my time. Sorry to revive something so long dead but...
In 2001 my local game store held its first ever Type 1 Tournament. At the time all the people at the store told me to play because I played T1, but I had no idea what it was. Lo and behold I found out. I was directed to Bdominia.com by a friend who read it all the time and tried getting advice on a deck I had been working on. I posted this monoU Trix list i had been playing (with AK/intuition) and man did I get flamed. Anyway I won the tournament with it and skulked around BD for the remainder of its run getting a grasp of the place. I had been playing Type 1 since alpha came out and instinctively knew all of the things that made up magic theory, I didn’t know someone had wrote them down. I just built decks and smashed face. Amazingly I found out that the deck I had been playing for years had a name, Keeper (though I prefer “the deck”).
I joined themanadrain.com in July or August of 2002. It was a much warmer place than BD. Great conversations led to great innovations and great decks. I made a lot of friends and learned and taught a lot. I became a mod in early 2003 (before the first crash) and continued until after the second; into early 2005. Then quit playing competitive T1.
Things I remember doing: Wrote a number of intro to T1 theory primers. Was the first person to run Deep Analysis in T1. Wrote a primer for monoU Trix – the best deck no one ever played until JP turned the skeleton into Hulk Smash. Ripped the roof off Neutral Ground NY with said monoU Trix Became a vintage adept. Feared the Mullet. First Turned LoA like a mizor. Met lots of cool people, here, on irc, and in person at about a million tournaments I traveled to. Birthed Ankh-sligh and wrote the primer. Kicked ass and took names Fought with Legend a lot. Ran a respectful number of Type-1 tournaments in New Jersey Wrote long ass tournament reports. Got invited to join meandeck by smmemenonenonenon. Work on Keeper with Zherbus and Carl. Worked on Long.dec with Smemnen. Worked with Toad to build Meandeck-Slaver. Always posted in bold blue text Had lots of fun.
Btw no one has mentioned Cividel as staff yet, course that might be too old school for most people.
Looking back it was a great time in my life and I sometimes miss it. If I didn’t need to play magic to understand what is going on here I would certainly return but I satiate my hunger by coming back twice a year and reading some posts. And maybe posting like this. You guys are all great, except Randomizor…

Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Academy deck?!?!?!?

doesn't anybody play the old school academy deck i played when i stopped? that would make you a person who last played in 2003? Well, "Academy" which was an all out combo deck that killed with an "X" spell (Stroke, Torch or Fireball) hasn't existed since about 2002 and died a slow painful death. It lived on and off for the few years before that, making appearances in metagame shifts that leaned heavily twords aggro but the advent of a non-stagnent metagame full of Aggro decks that won faster and had a lot of control pieces (TnT, Stax, Fish, EBA and Ankh-Sligh) along with the strengthening of Control decks and other more stable and redundant combo decks made playing the "Academy" deck very hard to win with and so it went kicking and screaming into the nether. Release of cards with the "Storm" ability resurged "Academy" type decks that are much more stable and harder to disrupt. thus if you are looking for threads talking about an "Academy" like deck you will be looking for threads with the new buzz words; Long... Storm Combo... TPS... or Tendrals. so the answer to the question is basically NO but is really KINDA... as for the Ichorid deck... the jury is still out on that one but you can bet there are some guys sitting in a dark room somewhere that are looking for the optimal deck list. so you can really not rush to judgement on that after GenCon this year... hope this helps Mo

Good Lord!!! Nice to see all of you guys are still around. All we need now is Kl0wn, Feverdog and Cividel to pop in and it will be just like old times.
anyway <3 you all!
And... I might just be making an appearance at a playing table sometime in the not so distant future. Well, if the idea I am working on pans out the way I think it will. Oh, and I can borrow cards because I dont think I have anything but power left.... heh

I would like to clear up a few things…
1) First of all I was the first TO to have a Nudie Bar party after his tournament. The Paragons' playtesting night consisted of beer and strip clubs back in 2001. And my girlfriend is also bi. So nyaah! sorry daren I am older then you, my girl has been bi for far longer and strip clubs have been in my practice since 1989
Beside the paragons are a coffee clotch now

I would like to clear up a few things…
1) First of all I was the first TO to have a Nudie Bar party after his tournament.
1) Menendian did not bring us to war. He pointed at the WMDs and got them restricted in more than one case. He didn’t say that there were WMDs somewhere and not find them. GroAtog was bad and he helped get it off the world market. Mind’s Desire was an abomination and he helped get sanctions on it before it effected the world. He helps keep your Mishra’s factories in working order. He brought Long.dec into the light of day so you weren’t all raped by it.
2) My girlfriend is bi and so the hot lezzie action goes down in my bedroom.
3) Menendian is good for international politics. He has been on trips to see our neighbors in Europe. He learned from them and brought their ideas home. He is making a better tomorrow for all involved. He does not hid in the closet with his “trinkets or with the “gay and plot the downfall of your commodities. He is a lawyer and who do you want running things an man who knows the law or someone who will try to sell our property out from under us.
4) Forget about these third party hacks…. How could you vote for a guy named Kl0wn?
5) and Lastly, I was the first TO to have a Nudie Bar party after his tournament.
SO vote Menendian/Cron because a vote for Meandeck is a vote for me (because I get to be Secretary of State if Meandeck wins).
Peace love and Moxes…

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Burning wish in 4cc?
|

I have a question... Lets say you actually need Balance (which does seem to happen fairly often) and you only have Demonic or Mystical Tutor in hand. It then costs you - or - + a card disadvantage and a draw, to cast a freakin spell that should be in your maindeck because it is quite possibally the most powerful spell in the game. Why would you do that??? I don't get it... I mean burning wish by itself is not really a terrible idea but what it does to your SB by adding it is not good. Shit you really don't even have the room to put the balance in there let alone other considerations that would make playing Burning Wish worthwhile. Keeper or 4CC is a very tight deck you really have no room for fancy tricks and shenannagins.

I am not going to claim to be an expert on monoU but I have tended to fiddle with it for a year or so at a time, so let me say/ask this...
One would think that playing maindeck Back to Basics and Wastelands would be at a counterpoint. In the new CoW enviroment we find ourselves, playing back to basics seems advantagous but putting wasted lands into a COW players grave seems like a lost cause. If you have them locked down B2B what are the wastes going to net you other than colorless lands you only going to be able to tap once.
Also... using early wastelands (which I dont think you would want to do anyway since the deck needs UU as quick as it can get it) will only slow your ability to play a quick B2B. You want to drop it ASAP correct?
Now I would guess that the decks clock is amazingly slow. So we are looking at a turn 15 win. I know Blue doesn't have the depth of spells that would alllow a full wishable SB but wouldn't you gain some flexability from 4 of 5 wishable targets?
Ok questions asked and so-forth and so-on.

I am truely sad to see Pciddy go. In two years when I tell someone "Cid says you are a moron." No one will know what I am talking about...
JK CId you will not be forgotten quite so easily.
Shit, that would be two mexicans in a year. I haven seen Nimmy around in forever either.
No Nimrod? No Cid? Damn, that leaves us with just Max?.?.?.????
Fuckin A, we need more mexicans!!!!

while it can be said that I have not been very active of late (the last few months), I am going to have to almost drop out of sight for a while. I have some real problems to deal with and they are going to be taking up ALL of my time.
I am still going to be poping in there and again here on themanadrain. But I cannot gaurantee that I can be anywhere for now... I will be back, mark my words.
I am hoping to make it back a few weeks before gencon so I can go to said event
Peace, Love and Moxes...

There was what, 35-40ish last time? There're going to be a few more I think, so I'm guessing 45. This is the moment where I challenge you to clone a few extra n00bs in your Spaarti cylinders. With the help of the ysalimiri, you can have them ready in time to bring your attendance over fifty people. Grand Admiral Thrawn is counting on you! Dude I hate to break this to you because you may or may not know but... THRAWN IS DEAD!!!![/b] Get over it, he got killed by his own body guard. Even though he was inherantly cooler than they were. Oh yea... 3 days away!!!! MO.

ok so this is the thing.
Moving to saturday is not so good for me as I tend bar on saturady nights most weekends. Though I could probably get it off this far in advance, but I make no money off the tournaments so I lose money. But that aside, I know Jason won't be too happy if I have this on Saturday.
Seeing the response so far it would probably be an awesome turn out on a Saturday, so I think the money aspect for Jason would be fine. But I don't think that the turnout will be as good if their isn't a lotus for first as I have held three tournaments for moxes or other power and got 20 or less people and two of those were on Saturday.
So holding it on saturday for less of a prize doesn't seem all that good.
correct me if I am wrong about this...
