Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Fishing in NY

I made it through ~20 games yesterday against various common archetypes and found the same results with Trygon. He hit the field in more than half of these games and wasn't able to destroy a single card including a game where he was a turn 2 drop on the play with double counter backup. He distracts removal from goyfs which is useful but not that impressive for being perched at the top of the mana curve.
That being said, the fact that he's the creature everyone is holding their solutions for might be a statement. Selkie is my preferred 3 drop as he is typically able to swing after goyfs fall off the board and whispers "I win" into the opponents ear if it hits more than once with exalted fuel.
Regarding Mindcensor, I always want to attack mana when viable but this card felt iffy on hitting fetches -- sometimes the effect doesn't negate the search and 50% of the REMAINING time, I wasn't willing to lose tempo by avoiding a more proper play in order to hold mana back for his flash.
As quick as people can be to state that The Deck/Keeper is a metagame deck that should be tweaked for the expected field, this stands true to all decks that have any kind of flex space. Given the variation of metas, I will continue to keep Trygon and Mindcensor in my pocket. I'm still interested to see how Thada works out.
Just for record, I am prone to running less creatures and more parity control than the rest of my fishy colleagues based on my ability to 'race' cards with more explosive opponents (ie, I can only drop and swing with so many 2/3cc men so fast). My theory is that if I can't keep tempo, I can't win.

I play Fish and intend to test these as a sideboard option.
I don't expect a huge swing in win percentage anywhere across the spectrum based on the 3cmc, double blue eating cost. I agree with the sentiment that this may fill much of the same role as an exalted Selkie but creating a more decisive advantage. Much like Selkie, she can all but seal a game, however it can be difficult to get (or keep) her in play. She needs to pair with turn 1 Noble to be truly fearsome. Turn 1 Noble shuts off half of my counters but by game two I will have a grip on who is the beatdown and some knowledge on whether turn 1 Noble was the correct play.
I'm not terribly optimistic about using her against Workshop fueled decks as I expect that without express board development and some well placed counters, I could easily be on the losing end of the manabase battle. I have cheaper artifact sweepers and, being a tempo deck, am clearly more concerned with what is currently on the board than what my opponent could be drawing several turns from now.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Problems with "The deck"

You tested and proposed changes to a deck that is based on specific game play concepts. What we're trying to explain is that the changes you've made do not adhere to these concepts.
In my opinion, you've made it clear that you have no intention of playing The Deck. What you seem to want to play is tutor-based fortress style control a la Ped Bun Oath of the Extended of old. While they both seek to control the game in the long run, they don't pilot alike -- in the same vein that a Ferrari and a Hyundai don't feel too similar.
It's not about setting up certain conditions so much as it is about aiming for certain advantages; using life as a resource (exchanging it for time and tempo, primarily) and seeking to gain maximum card advantage, virtual or otherwise. Fire/Ice is capable of creating many advantages that Pyroclasm cannot and further synergizes with both the other cards in the deck and the mentality of the play.
You're right about one thing -- Weissmans baby isn't for everyone.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Updating SmmenenBlue (mono blue) For a Post Gencon World

Although Azhrei uses that line in just about every serious deck-discussion thread I've seen him post in over the past 5+ years, I have to agree with him.
Balls to the wall, balls to the walls, balls to the wall. If your balls aren't to the wall, here, you're going to lose them.
I would not at all be opposed to a more aggressive (heavy b2b and morphling) blue build, in an environment like this.
I CAN'T say I'd like to see Strips go, though, as I think Stevie hit that right on the head. They are necessary, and do so many wonderful things. Islands are wonderful, but you only need so many.
--
I have always, always, always, including the days of 4 FoF, included at -least- 1 Nevinyrral's Disk in the sideboard.
In our case, it's sort of a Timetwister. When playing Timetwister, you had to be careful, and try to wedge/pray that the odds of who comes out on top would be in your favor (in dire cases, I mean--obviously you're gaining more if you lost 0 and opponent lost 7 in hand).
Disk is more reset than removal. You clean the bored, and then bank (hopefully making an -educated- move) on the fact that your hand should be prepared for your opponents hand.
I don't quite advocate playing exactly in an all-or-nothing form, but it WILL, not too rarely, work out so that all you have to do is walk your way into a turn 3 (turn 4 active) Disk.
Just think Reset, not Removal.

As for Fact or Fiction as a whole, it CAN belong, but doesn't, the way Smmenen's deck is designed to flow.
If you're running with Scrolls or Wishes (and in these cases, 5x Ancestral/AK may already be enough...), then, yeah, maybe FoF can be a nice accent.
With this particular type of build, though, I came to notice (and I will admit that I opposed Smmenen on this issue for quite some time, those years ago) that FoF existed as somewhat of a ...speedbump.
Fact is an -incredible- card when you can link them, but in cases where all you're going to do, basically, is spend 4 mana for 2 cards, there's a lot more we could be doing, in type 1.
It's the casting cost that just doesn't agree with the rest of the deck. The entire rest of the deck functions in twos, fives, and morphlings (five+).
Trying to fit a lone 4cc card into this base is like trying to build a bridge between two towers without having it touch either.

No, but I have to say that Evil Dead is probably everything House of the Dead isn't.
Weird fogs? Check. Ash is a pussy in the first movie? Check. Ash is better in the second movie? Check. Ash is hardcore badass in Army of Darkness? Double Check. People turning into freaky-ish demons? Check. WOMEN GETTING RAPED BY TREES? CHECK CHECK CHECK.
Plus misc. chainsaw and sawed-off shotgun action.
Evil Dead has given me everything I've ever asked for in that line of movie, so that's probably why I never bothered (read: wasted my time) watching House of the Dead.
=)
The originaly HotD game was good, tho. :X

Wow, kl0wn, this is the first time I've ever seen you say something that wasn't sarcastic. I feel so honered. It's more of a goodbye as someone who was productive. I did one good thing for those years, and that was protect the channel. My ability to do so has been removed. That's all. I doubt I'd be able to keep myself away fully.

Backing down from what? I don't see anything I have backed down from.
You expect me to fight with Zherbus about whether I should be a mod, or something?
You come to a thread like this to do nothing more than insult me. Welcome to the world of Negator.
Hopefully someone locks this thread before it gets taken any further.

Please note that this post is 100% sincere and contains absolutely zero sarcasm.
-------------
First of all, I'd like to apologize to anybody who was offended by my earlier post. I was not intended to offended, I was only intending to state some of the obvious.
I blame myself, though, because I should have known that of COURSE it would turn into some sort of horrible mishap, as it always did in BD history.
-------------
I've just come to say thank you. I spent a handful of years worth of time dedicated to helping Beyond Dominia and The Mana Drain.
For whatever reason(s), after trying to get Zherbus to talk about it about once every couple months for the past year+, Steve apparently didn't want to reinstate my mod status.
The new rule in #tmd is that the only ops shall be those who are mods, with jeek being the exception, since he manages the bot. I am gone. There is absolutely no justification to trying to argue with that. It's a logical rule.
I just wanted to thank everyone for the great times, great events, great decks, great thoughts, great acheivements, and great failures that we've all been through together over the better part of this past decade.
I would appreciate anyone who ever cared leaving a goodbye note, but I guess I can't expect much of anything.
It's been a blast.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / "Community" A rant. Obviously not planned out.

I guess some certain amount of my wording was not quite what I intended it to be.
The question was not 'Why aren't we all sucking up to specific people' but 'Why aren't we all considering every one of us to be important'?
I just wanted to point that out since Jeek was offended by a certain sentence. He deopped me, and Zherbus responded by deopping him and everyone else.
I've been trying to talk to Jeek, but apparently he has me on ignore.
Rule of thumb #2: Communication doesn't work too well when one or both parties can't hear/read.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Dream Car?
|
on: August 23, 2004, 04:30:53 am

I already own one of my dream cars. I own a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. 6.6 liter engine. T-tops. Currently an automatic, but it will be made a manual as soon as possible. Manual transmission, higher rear axle gearing, and paint (white with blue trim) are all upcoming, for this car. I also currently own a 98 Chevy Lumina and an 87 Mazda Rx-7...I've been trying to get rid of the Rx-7 for months. =( I bit later in life I think I may also want to pick up one or two more of these babies. After I finish pimping this car out, I'd like to find a good 1970 Firebird Formula that needs a home, and drop in a 1969 Cadillac 472ci engine--that's 375 horses and 525 lb-ft of torque. Btw: To whoever said they wanted that lame Porsche: that's a shitload of money for only that speed. If you're going to blow that kind of cash, you might as well get a Lambo or Ferrari. I used to like Lamborghinis, but...my NEW dreamcar is a: Ford. FORD, BITCH. The Ford GT. 550 horsepower, 500 lb-ft of torque, mid-engined set up. FUCK porsches, lambos, and ferraris. American 4L.
