Congratulations on your finish! It appears I made a horrible misplay there in our quarterfinal match. At the time you played Gifts, I had put my second Bazaar into play, so I would have won next turn. Somehow i had the idea that you would be able to activate the Time Vault next turn, but at that point you only had two lands... You had a third land in hand, but no other manasources so indeed, you would have been unable to take infinite turns... Good to see my error, I'll try to learn from it The third game in the quarterfinal, you had a Library of Alexandria instead of the fetchland. We were having some turns of draw-go before you got the colored source, you even had to activate the library before you had it. At that point, I had two Nature's Claims in hand, but by the time my colored mana showed up, you had Spell Pierce mana available. Too bad, but I had some good games and was lucky that my opponents did not draw enormous amounts of hate. (That last match really was an exception) In the end I got a Volcanic and my brother got a Mana Crypt, so it was a good day all the same. Gerwin

@LennoxLewis, Just to clarify your problem with the Spheres: You were right. I followed the discussion from a distance, but didn't hear exactly how this went. The thing is that you first add all additional costs (Sphere / Thorn of Amethyst), then apply cost reductions. If, at this moment, the total cost in mana is less then three, Trinisphere will make it 3. The Gifts Ungiven in this scenario would still be 5 mana to cast. If there are 2 spheres and a Trinisphere, a hurkyls recall will cost 4 mana.
On another note, again a really nice tournament report Marske. Although you didn't make T8, I'm sure you will get there eventually. Perhaps in january in Breda again.
I just received the scanned versions of the T8 decklists, I will process them this evening and put them online as well. Thanks for the props for the organisation, I had a great time during the tournament and I'm really happy with how the entire day played out.

Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer
|
on: November 02, 2009, 02:42:56 pm

At the same tournament Mantis was at, I also joined in with my own build of 'Ichorid' with Bloodghast. For the fun of it, I created a transformational sideboard to include the new Dark Depths / Vampire Hexmage combo. Although I managed to surprise some people, and have them open with Leylines, Tormod Crypts or Needles on Bazaar, the combo still was too slow and fragile (as I had expected it to be). Here's the list I played: // Lands4 Bazaar of Baghdad 2 Dakmor Salvage 4 Verdant Catacombs 1 Dryad Arbor 3 Bayou //\\ // Creatures4 Golgari Grave-Troll 3 Golgari Thug 4 Narcomoeba 4 Stinkweed Imp 4 Bloodghast 1 Flame-Kin Zealot 2 Cephalid Sage //\\ // Spells4 Serum Powder 4 Bridge from Below 4 Cabal Therapy 3 Dread Return 4 Unmask 1 Lotus Petal 1 Black Lotus 3 Crop Rotation //\\ // Sideboard3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth 4 Vampire Hexmage 4 Dark Depths 1 Demonic Consultation 3 Spoils of the Vault As you can see, I included crop rotation; it has nice synergy with Bloodghast, can fetch one part of the combo post-board and allows you to search an extra bazaar the second turn. In my gold-fish experiments, it also helped to improve the mulligans by improving your odds to have an extra 'virtual' bazaar (although this is tricky, when your opponent plays FoW) Some remarks on the tournament: Preboard, I managed to win three out of six games on the second turn. Bloodghast was a huge factor in these games, as I managed to return one or more with my second land drop, to enable a game-winning dread return. Two games, my first bazaar got wasted. Here, Bloodghast again was quite good, as I could just dredge with my black creatures instead of pondering whether to remove them to Ichorid or not. One remarkably play was in my last game, where I managed to hardcast a Cephalid Sage, using Lotus, paying one extra mana for the daze of my opponent and then next turn pay two mana for the spell pierce my opponent fired at my Dread Return The only game I lost preboard was when my opponent double Jester Capped me on his second turn, removing my Narcomoeba's (last one in hand) and Bridge from Below (last one removed with Serum Powder), followed by a Chalice on 1 and 4... Hurrah for Metalworker. My sideboard games were less succesful. I already figured this from some test games, but tried it anyway. I don't want to go into much details, but it comes down to the fact that a 20/20 flying, indestructible guy just doesn't cut it in Vintage. In three games, I got the big dude out, one game I had to sacrifice him to a Warren Weirding, another game my opponent topdecks an Ensnaring Bridge to which I had no answer, but one game I actually connected and won the game (My opponent opened with a Needle on bazaar , I topdeck a Black Lotus, Unmask him to discard Swords to Plowshares, play Hexmage w/ Lotus, drop Dark Depths and create the token. He drew a new swords to plowshares but did not have the white mana to use it). Two other games I won postboard, but without Marit Lage; the first by going aggro with Bloodghasts and Golgari Thugs, backed up with Unmasks and Therapies. The other by switching back to the pure dredge build, to which he had no answers anyway (minus 6, Worldgorger Dragon with Tez sideboard). I do think that Bloodghast has potential and I liked playing with it better than playing with Ichorid. However, I have to go back to the drawing board for my sideboard strategy. This can be a 'traditional' build with Reverent Silence, Emerald Charm, Dark blast, Oxidize and the alikes, or a blue build with Chain of Vapor, in which case the maindeck will be similar to the list by meadbert. Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Conflux/Dream Halls combo deck?
|
on: January 09, 2009, 06:38:52 pm

I've been thinking about this combo, and I feel that it could be a lot less bulky. If you have a have a dream halls in play, you cast glittering wish to get one Conflux and somehow cast it. Then you grab something from your library like:
- All Suns' Dawn (Green) - Research Development (Blue) - Two multicolor/split cards that contain green and blue (for pitching) - One random other card
You cast All Suns' Dawn, to retrieve the Conflux (plus some other cards...) You cast Research to shuffle the Glittering Wish, All Suns' Dawn and two pitch-cards back into your library
You cast the retrieved Conflux, and search for: - All Suns' Dawn - Four other cards
You cast All Suns' Dawn, retrieving Conflux, Research/Development and some other cards. You cast Research to shuffle All Suns' Dawn back You cast Conflux, to search for All Suns' Dawn
Rinse and repeat, generate a huge amount of storm and finish your opponent
So technically, what you need to initiate this combo is:
- Dream Halls in play - The ability to play Glittering Wish/Burning Wish (either by pitching or paying mana) - An extra card to pitch to Conflux
- Your sideboard needs one Conflux - Your maindeck needs: Research/Development, All Suns' Dawn at least two multicolor cards that can be pitched
I think these are requirements that can be quite easily met... it will perhaps not be the most competitive deck, since you need to include dream halls and glittering wishes, but you can include FoW to protect the combo, perhaps add Acadamy Rector (who can also be pitched for glittering wish) + Cabal Therapy and duress/cabal therapy.
Please correct me if I'm mistaking somewhere

Hey Duncan, Gerwin here, I'm still impressed with the second game in Top 8 against me, although I was not playing a mox jet and named a jixlid jailer (instead of FoW). The third game indeed was a very lucky topdeck for me, I've been having quite a lot of those that day. Too bad my opponent in T4 had a start of Leyline of the Void with bazaar + dredger, three games in a row... I couldn't lucksack out of that one. I'm still having mixed feelings about Ichorid. The list I played (mana'd) was very powerful and combolicious, the deck can be quite ridiculous but random at times. I can imagine it's not much fun to play against Ichorid, because there are times I'm wondering why I'm still even playing it. Next time I'll probably play something else Also I was wondering about your sideboard decisions against me. Against the mana'd version, I think duress is more powerful than the massacre. You cannot cast it cheaply and most of the time it will be too late... (or I'll produce even more zombies on the next turn). Perhaps you could also have switched the chain of vapors for the duresses, but I'm not sure about that. In my mainboard or sideboard there is nothing dangerous that you would want to bounce (but you could not have known that, off course). Gerwin

On the forums of www.magicbrabant.nl I found the decklists of the Top 8 (mine included... ) and a breakdown of the metagame. In total there were 24 players. I really enjoyed the tournament, it was worth the 3-hour traintour and getting up at half past six. I also had the most weird standing for going into a T8, 2-0-3... 2 of those draws I went to time (although I would have killed one of my opponents the next turn, the other one I probably would have lost), the last one was Intentional. Eternal Formats / Creative / [Budget Deck] MonoG Land Destruction. Feedback wanted!
|
on: December 18, 2004, 10:36:23 am

Nice to see some discussion on this deck. I've been playing and changing this deck for some time now and took it to some powered and non-powered tournaments. It didn't always work too well, but lately I managed to make T8 twice (one non-powered). Some comments on discussion points earlier in this post: Sphere of resistance vs. Trinisphere: Personally I prefer the Trinisphere. They will both come down the second turn with a normal hand. In that case Trinisphere probably will lock down your opponent, while Sphere of resistance will also slow yourself down (making your landdestruction cost 4 mana) Furthermore, your opponent must have three mana to play his counters, this is one huge advantage versus FoW or Misdirection. On the early threats: In my deck I play 4 Tangle Wires, 3 Powder Kegs and 3 Living Wishes (for Terravore, Tabernacle or Maze of Ith). Especially the Tangle Wires are extremely usefull against aggro. When your opponent drops a turn 1 lackey or welder, you have to be praying for an elf (in case of the lackey) or a Powder Keg Colour splashing: Last tournament, I tried a splash for blue. I had Gilded Drake as a wish target in my sideboard vs. oath, and at first I wanted to play Chill vs. red decks. In the end I didn't play Chill and I didn't really miss it. This may come because the one goblin deck I played had to mulligan to five cards 2 times. The Gilded Drake didn't come out of the board, because I didn't play vs. oath or Darksteel Colossus. Also the addition of Back to Basics is possible, but I haven't tried that yet. Adding a color can be good, but it also makes your deck more vurnerable to waste lands. On the one hand this is good (you destroy one of their lands), but it also can manascrew you just enough to make your opponent stabilize enough. Here is the latest version of my decklist: Mainboard: // Lands (22) 9 x Forest 2 x Tropical Island 4 x Windswept Heath 4 x Wasteland 1 x Strip Mine 1 x Dust Bowl 1 x Treetop Village // Creatures (12) 4 x Llanowar Elves 4 x Birds of Paradise 3 x Terravore 1 x Argothian Wurm // Land Destruction (9) 4 x Ice Storm 3 x Thermokarst 2 x Creeping Mold // Utility (17) 4 x Tangle Wire 3 x Powder Keg 3 x Living Wish 3 x Trinisphere 2 x Crucible of Worlds 1 x Crop Rotation 1 x Sword of Fire and Ice Sideboard: // Wish targets (6) 1 x Terravore 1 x Caustic Wasps 1 x Gilded Drake 1 x Dust Bowl 1 x Maze of Ith 1 x The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale // Other (9) 2 x Ground Seal 2 x Naturalize 2 x Chalice of the Void 3 x Null Rod As you can see, my sideboard is heavily against artifact and powered decks. (My meta is mostely non-powered). I found out I could use some extra Ground Seals vs. Goblin Welder. My deck also does not use Root Maze. With the addition of fetch lands and Trinisphere, you are hurting yourself a lot with that otherwise very usefull card. The two 1-ofs in the mainboard are some random personal choices. The Crop Rotation is very usefull with the Crucible of Worlds mainboard, you can find your Strip Mine to lock your opponent down. Even if you do not have the Crucible, it still turns one of your forests or other lands (instantly) into a Strip Mine or a Dust Bowl. In desperate situations it can also turn a land into a Treetop Village, adding an extra creature to your side of the board. The Sword of Fire and Ice is just a cool card! It turns the elves into killing machines and gives card advantage. I managed to beat a land still deck to death with a Birds of Paradise, how nice is that Well, these were just some of my thoughts on this deck, I hope to hear nice ideas from other peoples too.
