Aww. next time you do one of these, Let me know. I'm a kitchen manager at that Capital Ale House, and if I know you're coming I'll totally whip up some fancy food items fit for a gamer.
For example, here's a special I ran last week: A burger topped with cheddar, a fried egg, and bacon served between two pieces of French Toast with a maple cream spread. Orgasm.

pretty much hate the scanning decklists idea. it might be a bit less work for the person doing it, but they're damn near impossible to read. The only 2 cards I can make out in Jeff Carpenters list are Forbidden Orchard and Xantid Swarm
On a side note to this, imagine being a judge and having to sit through this. Scanning the lists serves the additional purpose of showing people the importance of writing lists neatly, or better yet, typing them out before hand. Also, Jer: How did that singleton Enlightened Eggplant work out in your sideboard. :p

I'd like to add that these types of decks are very deceivingly difficult to play correctly. It's very easy to drop a game simply by playing the wrong lock piece. I liken it to Stax where everything you drop swings. This deck required very intimate knowledge of the metagame to succeed.
One thing that I absolutely think needs to be addressed is the threat of Chalice@ 2 dropped when you are on the draw. I expect any halfway decent shop player to aggressively mulligan for this kind of hand.
I must say that I like the direction you are taking Null Rod aggro in, and I appreciate how you have acknowledged the fact that this deck is very capable of winning any matchup you happen to be sitting across from. Cheers!

Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Re: [Des Moines, IA] Vintage Tournament @ Mayhem comics and games April 18th

Ugh...only 1 person showed up besides myself. Tournament was cancelled. Does anyone have any tips on how to throw a good tournament in the future? I know that Des Moines has vintage players but constructed tournaments in general have a hard time getting off the ground here. It's mostly a drafting city I guess.
To be honest, when I lived in Des Moines, there just wasn't much vintage after asking around at some FNMs in Ames and WDM. I had multiple decks with me that I loaned out which generated some interest. (these were outdated decks to, even for their time). A small crowd built up to watch some casual games between myself and Scott, one of the Mayhem owners. People seemed to be very interested in decks that were so powerful they could have 3 2/1s dropped turn one followed by a turn 2 pyrostatic pillar, and then lose to being comboed out turn two right through it. Proxy up a bunch of decks and loan them out at FMNs. They regularly got excellent turnouts (20+). The regulars there are willing to try out any format that's fun. I remeber 5 color highlander had caught on pretty well, for example. It will take a bit of work, but it can certainly be done. Had I lived in Des Moines for a bit longer, I may have suceeded already by doing the same thing. Good luck.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here. I am of the opinion that I need no further help to beat Ichorid. I peel extremely far ahead when i drop a thorn, and I usually force them into a game of attrition should I follow that up with a strip. It is very hard for Ichorid to win if you start forcing them to draw cards naturaly. It is usually at this point that I would crypt them and seal up the game. Trick is, Teeg locks up that game to, as does subsequent thorn effects.
Doesn't matter. You're still better off with a mix of Relics and Crypts than Relics alone. Also, consider that Null Rod turns both off. One of your best answers to combo stops your answer to their Yawg Wills. At least with Crypt, you can sac it in response to your Rod and not have to leave mana open on subsequent turns. I board out Null Rod vs. Ichoird. I don't board in Relics vs. Will decks. It's not all that better to run a mix. Relic beats Chalice@0, which is harder to stop than Cabal Therapy. But it's all a moot point since both Crypt and relic are win more against Ichorid.

Nothing. The question is what it does that Gaea's Blessing doesn't. At sorcery speed, Blessing isn't a serious threat to most decks that rely on the graveyard. It's basically only run as a foil to Painter. Point is, you can run any card with an incarnation or DSC-like triggered ability and still survive Painter. Unlike Blessing, double DSC/Progenitus is immune to stifle and leyline, while the incarnations (and some cards like them) have fat butts that can walk over opposing goyfs. Also, Natural Order as a green Tinker for Progenitus is currently winning Legacy tournaments. Point is, Blessing is a dead answer to painter when drawn, other cards still do things that can matter when drawn.
Okay, that makes sense. If I'm drawing games, I force them to beat me with the rest of their deck, which I am quite strong against. Ichorid can't cast Therapy with a Thorn effect on the board. I'm not kidding when I say that Ichorid is a difficult match to lose. You have to play very poorly to not beat it. Threat diversity still doesn't hurt. And most modern Ichy builds are mana-ed.[/quote]I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here. I am of the opinion that I need no further help to beat Ichorid. I like serenity as a possible answer. Actually, it may be my favorite answer yet. It clunks up my deck, but the 7/11 is really hard to answer to.

@Almighty Consider Vigor and cards with triggers like its over Gaea's Blessing. It's not inconceivable to cast and resolve it in the aggro mirror.
Also, I strongly recommend a *variety* of Ichorid hate to dodge early Cabal Therapies. Even 2x Relic, 1x Tormod's, _x Mogg Fanatic.
What would Vigor do that my deck doesn't already? I tend to steamroll aggro. Ichorid can't cast Therapy with a Thorn effect on the board. I'm not kidding when I say that Ichorid is a difficult match to lose. You have to play very poorly to not beat it. If this deck had a gaping hole it would be that there are few answers to Leviathan. Tariff? Deathtouch creature?

Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Land that produces more than one mana

I was just thinking that this might be a cool land. -Land- Tap: add to your mana pool. Put a charge counter on -land-. Tap, remove a charge counter: add to your mana pool. I love mana acceleration, and this is a land I might play. It could be made into a cycle by making the second ability add , etc. instead of . It could also be a cycle of duals by adding two different colors with the second ability.

I ran this build to a 3-2 finish yesterday
1 Strip Mine 3 Plateau 3 Savannah 4 Wasteland 4 Ethersworn Canonist 4 Glowrider 4 Swords to Plowshares 4 Tarmogoyf 3 Taiga 4 Windswept Heath 4 Null Rod 3 Kird Ape 4 Tin Street Hooligan 4 Wild Nacatl 4 Thorn of Amethyst 1 Mox Pearl* 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mox Ruby* 1 Mox Emerald* 1 Black Lotus 1 Wooded Foothills
Sideboard 4 Ingot Chewer 4 Relic of Progenitus 2 Lightning Bolt 3 Gaddock Teeg 2 Gaea’s Blessing
As I mentioned on the BMORE thread, my losses were due to having inexperience in the Belcher Matchup and having an improperly configured sideboard against my Tezz opponent. None of my match wins were even close, really. I was blowing people out in every game I won. I feel that this deck is powerful enough to win in any given field.

I finished 3-2 with Ponies! A GWR Null Rod Aggro deck.
Quickie!
1 Strip Mine 3 Plateau 3 Savannah 4 Wasteland 4 Ethersworn Canonist 4 Glowrider 4 Swords to Plowshares 4 Tarmogoyf 3 Taiga 4 Windswept Heath 4 Null Rod 3 Kird Ape 4 Tin Street Hooligan 4 Wild Nacatl 4 Thorn of Amethyst 1 Mox Pearl* 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mox Ruby* 1 Mox Emerald* 1 Black Lotus 1 Wooded Foothills
Sideboard 4 Ingot Chewer 4 Relic of Progenitus 2 Lightning Bolt 3 Gaddock Teeg 2 Gaea’s Blessing
Round One- Ralph with Painter
Game one involves me dropping a Glowrider off a Lotus, Playing a land, and saying go. I followed up with a Null rod, and that was pretty much it.
Game two was more interactive. He drained a Thorn into Tinker->DSC. I had the sword for it, but he had a force.
Game three, a Glowrider blew him out again. He showed me after the match that he was Painter. I wished him luck and went to round two.
Round Two- Nat with Belcher
He described it pretty well. If I played Thorn first game three, I would have won instead.
Round 3- Darryn with Tezz
Game one I drop a turn one Null Rod followed by a Glowrider. I strip two lands and am well on my way to blowing him out when he rips library. I knew he was waiting to drain something so I never really cast anything relevant until I baited a drain with a Nacatl to resolve a Canonist. He used his drain mana to cast an ugly 5 mana gifts, which I gave him Mystical Tutor and Walk, two quite medicre cards. Library brought him back enough into the game where he could Echoing Truth two Rods, cast Walk, and find that 6th mana source to get Vault/Key out.
Game two was going to be a blowout in my favor, but he ripped Key to go along with the vault in hand to take it down turn two. If I had a better sideboard, I should have won this match. I removed 6 Blasts from my deck to make room for some Ichorid hate. If I had blasts in either game, winning would have been pretty easy. All well. At least I know for next time.
Round 4- Local kid with Ichorid.
Neither game was interesting. My entire deck is Ichorid hate and I blew him out both times. I'm not sure why I even bother with Ichorid hate anymore. In 7 or so matches against it with this deck, I've lost once. If the Relics were Blasts, Round three would have been far more winnable for me. Still, he was a nice kid, and we played an epic type 4 game with our opponents at the table next to us when the round was over. It involved someone Overwhelming Intellecting an Iname as One and drawing 12(!) cards. The rest of the game was the three of us trying to take him down unsucessfully.
Round 5- Max with Conflux Combo deck.
His deck relies on drain as a blue dark ritual. Game one, a single resolved Glowrider went the distance as I just never even bothered casting anything else. Casting anything would have involved him having drain mana to potentially win. Game 2 I had a Thorn, Kird Ape, and Null Rod in play and just just bashed. He resolved Will, drew a couple of cards with it, and passed the turn. When the match was over, I showed him that he could have cast and resolved Tinker using his Will, but it would have been a moot point, and I had he needed to tap out to do so, and my sword would have been uninhibited due to my Glowrider. Still he's a local kid new to vintage, and I traded with him afterwards. Maybe when I start hosting tourneys here in Fredericksburg, I can persuade him to come along.
It was a fun day regardless. I met a bunch of the Mid Atlantic players and had a great time. I'm not going to mention Nat's trip around 495 that looped us around DC. I will mention that while we were going in the wrong direction , there was a car pulled over on the side of the highway that had a girl laying spread eagle face down wearing a purple skirt. As we passed her, she was discovered to have a beard. Creepy.
Props to Darryn for running a fun even. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one and make believers out of my deck when I blow people out with it once more. :p Cheers!

Wouldn't he have to eventually choose to stop the loop? Its not like a dragon draw where dragon is the only target and you have to animate it so the loop continues. Since he is choosing each time to untap or not to untap wouldn't he eventually have to choose not to untap? Otherwise it just seems like stalling.
I'm prety sure at the very least he has a minute to decide to do something and at the very least can run out the clock, which was at like 2 min. No....that's stalling. You can't just sit there for a minute and do nothing every turn. he has to end the loop at some point because it's voluntary. this should definitely be a loss at least since a judge should rule he has to end the loop. This is covered in the rules forum. Isaac, if you had DSC why couldn't you kill your opponent once you were taking infinite turns? He was at 1 life with Necro in play and no cards in hand.
