What is MG Extreme, you ask? It is the deck to beat all decks.
Manabase: 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Pearl 1 Lotus Petal 1 Chrome Mox 1 Sol Ring 2 Fellwar Stone 2 Heart of Ramos 3 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine 3 Wooded Foothills 7 Basic Mountain
Spells: 4 Lightning Bolt 3 Blood Lust 2 Fling 1 Red Elemental Blast 2 Pyrokinesis 3 Pillage 4 Blood Moon 3 Firebreathing 2 Crown of Flames
Creatures: 2 Goblin Vandal 2 Canyon Wildcat 4 Goblins of the Flarg 4 Mountain Goat
If you havn't figured out what the objective of the deck is yet, I'll break it down for you. The plan is to get a strong red mana base early while dropping 1/1s. Then, you drop an early Blood Moon, decimating most type 1 decks. If necessary, there is one REB as backup. (I'm thinking of upping this to 3 and taking out the flings, but we'll see.) You could even side in more REBs against control decks if you find the need. Blood Moon not only disrupts your opponents gameplan, but now their fetches and dual lands are all mountains and you can walk all over them and tap Fellwar for red. The next step is to trample them with firebreathing mountain goats, until you can pump one up big and then fling it for double damage to finish them off. And what will they do to stop you? They won't be able to drop a creature to stop you b/c of all the burn and they can't drop an artifact due to the massive amount of artifact destruction. The only thing that can stop you is Enchantments and counters. Bounce slows you down, but the amount of 1cc creatures will hopefully just overwhelm your opponent.
Plus, who would want to stay in in a game where you have wave after wave of firebreathing mountain goats attacking and being flung at you? Personally, I'd rather be the one throwing them.

i have been playing this deck for a little while, since someone posted it on here, and i found that it was not goldfishing well at all, i wouldnt draw articafts when i needed them and so on, but once i sat down with Rich Shay and played against his Slaver build i began to get the hang of it a bit more, now it was entirely defeated against his CS build, but thats to be expected, when i started testing it against DeathLong though it handled itself much, much better. Andy, how have you found the CS matchup to be? what would you side in/out?

Eternal Formats / Creative / [Deck Discussion] Rector Trix, is it time?
|
on: February 23, 2005, 12:18:28 pm
|
With the recent placement of a Trix deck in the top 8 at Waterbury, i have been playing around with the deck with left over cards (i currently have slaver, TPS, R/g, WW, Fish, Oath all built, so i'm running out of the good cards) and tested it against slaver, granted i am not a very good slaver player as i found out at YMG last saturday, but even so, it won 75-80% of the time, i dont have the exact build with me, but it used the standard engine of getting either Cabal Therapy or P. Tower and then playing and killing Rector, bringing out Bargain, drawing out cards and playing illusions, drawing more cards, then donate and Chain of Vapor for the kill. I think i was using Impulse as a draw engine, cuz i couldnt find Brainstorm, as soon as i get home tonight i'll post the actual build.
My point is that this was a mediocre build and it was beating Slaver 75-80% of the time. i tried out TPS and it was much less resiliant. I think that Trix's multiple paths to victory might bring this deck back to the forefront.
Now i stopped playing magic for a while and i'm not sure about the history of Trix, but why did it drop out of favor? Was there a card restriction? Are there any new cards that might bring it back? maybe Gift's Ungiven, or Diabolic Tutor, which i have long been wanting to put in the deck.
Thoughts? Ideas?

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck Discussion]R/G Tempo, revisited

one thing to add... 3 REB's maindeck, if you look at the statistics, almost every deck runs crucial blue spells, with these and Hearth Kami maindeck, along with burn and mancers, not only does slaver not have a chance, but TPS, Meandeck, Oath... all of which (besides slaver) are you feared matchups. REB maindeck was the best change yet in my friend and I's R/G deck, when tested against slaver it went undefeated.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck Discussion] whats the best way to play TPS with Gifts?
|
on: February 03, 2005, 12:35:05 pm
|
i have just started playing TPS with Gifts Ungiven and find myself wondering what the best things to fetch for are in different situations. so lets talk about some possible situations:
assume your hand has like DR, Tendrills and FOW with an untapped underground sea and an untapped Academy with 4 artifacts out (all taped). assume that the Gifts was uncountered obviously.
A : playing against control slaver and they have a hand you have yet to duress
B : playing against 5/3 or workshop with a trini in play
C : playing against dr4gon knowing he will win next turn if he has another turn
here is my current build: (keep in mind its 5proxy cuz i dont have any power yet) // Mana Sources (24) 3 Island 2 Swamp 2 Underground Sea 1 Tolarian Academy 2 Flooded Strand 4 Fetch 1 Black Lotus (P) 1 Mox Jet (P) 1 Mox Ruby (P) 1 Mox Sapphire (P) 1 Mana Crypt 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mox Diamond 1 Chrome Mox 1 Mana Vault 1 Sol Ring
//Draw (9) 1 Ancestral Recall(P) 4 Brainstorm 1 Frantic Search 1 Gush 1 Necropotence 1 Yawgmoth's Bargain
//Draw7 (2) 1 Time Spiral 1 Memory Jar
//Tutor (6) 1 Tinker 1 Mystical Tutor 2 Gifts Ungiven 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Demonic Tutor
//Disruption (11) 1 Chain of Vapors 2 Rebuild 4 Force of Will 4 Duress
//I win (8) 4 Dark Ritual 1 Mind's Desire 1 Yawgmoth's Will 2 Tendrils of Agony

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discussion] Building a Better Hate Deck, or RG Tempo

first of all, i think your right about mogg fanatic, they have allways been the first things to side out, so i think i might take them out for another ankh and maybe another gibbons or mancer.
as far as ankh goes i find it excellent vs slaver and vs my friends u/w weenie deck (crucible/waste) and i think it would be amazing vs fish as well due to the fact they run like 6 fetches, it doesnt work well against combo, b/c they just go off before it can really hurt them anyways, but in those cases i concentrate on hating them out with pillar and root maze.
Troll is good even though he is slow, he is the late game solution i find, i drop 1cc threats early to beat and use extra mana for hate, he usually comes down turn 4-5 to finish the job along with my trees (unless i hit lotus, then he can drop 1st turn)

I have been messing with this build after I made a R/G Kird Ape deck for fun, then I started reading this thread and it inspired me to try and make it tournament worthy. I went through a number of different builds trying out numerous different cards (hey I even had Blastoderm in there once, eeK). I am currently testing the following build though I am still working on it.
//Creatures-24 4 Kird Ape 2 Skyshroud Elite 4 River Boa 3 Troll Ascetic 3 Grim Lavamancer 3 Gorilla Shaman 2 Mogg Fanatic 3 Hidden Gibbons (not sure whether to put them here or in spells, but whatever)
//Mana-22 4 Elvish Spirit Guide 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Emerald 4 Land Grant 2 Wooded Foothills 3 Taiga 2 Forest 1 Mountain 3 Treetop Village
//Spells-14 4 Lightning Bolt 2 Shock 3 Rancor 3 Root Maze 2 Ankh of Mishra
--Sideboard-- 3 Pyrostatic Pillar 4 Artifact Mutation 2 Naturalize 3 Null Rod 2 Electrostatic Bolt (good against angel but not sure yet) 1 Pyrokinesis (playing around with it)
As far as the Land Grant vs. Fetch debate I settled on both as they are both good and bad, I think 2 fetch is good enough b/c usually I just get the one mountain with them, unless of course my opponent isn’t playing nonbasic hate. plus the 5 damage I would take with ankh in play plus the effect of root maze, I simply wouldn’t put it down late in the game. Anyways, as far as creatures, I made it a very strong aggro deck with some hate and more in the SB, I usually side out the fanatics and elites first for extra hate, pillar is OK, but I haven’t tested it against storm decks, where I think it will shine. I’m thinking of going up to 4 Naturalize in the SB due to comments in this thread, I’ll test it with an oversized SB and see what I take more.
As far as matchups go, I thought control slaver was my strongest matchup, but if they go aggro with platinum angel and pentavus, they can sometimes out race me, hence the electrostatic bolts in the sideboard, anyone have any comments on that? As far as ankh goes, I want to run 4 (alas I only own 2) b/c it hates any deck with fetchlands and oftentimes wins me games vs. anything if I can drop one first turn. Ideal situation: -Drop foothills, fetch land, drop gibbons or some counter bait (mox monkey) -then drop ankh with some acceleration (ESG, mox, lotus) if you go first then you are now one land ahead of the game and they are probably taking either 2 or 5 their first turn, from here you just drop like 2 lands and keep dropping threats until their dead.
Another good first turn with this deck is Gibbons, Gibbons, b/c you are almost guaranteed a 2nd turn 4/4 creature b/c they will mostlikely brainstorm in response looking for a counter or counter the second one.
Idunno, sofar I am still tweeking b/c overall I find this build to not be stunning, but it is definitely more fun to play against combo or any other deck for that matter. Please let me know what you think.

What decks do you guys think Blood moon is good against? i think someone mentioned that ti doesnt help against Control Slaver, how so? i'm building a R/G deck to play in a HIGHLY diverse metagame that ranges from random elf life gain to Control Slaver and H Smash, probably Oath as well now, so i'm debating whether to SB or MD it.
Also it seems to me that the best answer to Oath i've seen here is a total SB leaving Art Mut and DC, i think that works much better than Goblin Bombardment, what do you guys think?
