1  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Tokyo 04/21/07] Worlds Legacy Side Event on: September 23, 2007, 07:17:23 am
Alright, It's great to see legacy alive around the world. When I first came to Tokyo I never thought that I would be able to play any format but constructed. As it turns out I was wrong. So far I have only been to 2 tournaments here so far, but each have both been over 30 people.

This tournment result is out of 100+ players. I don't know why some of the list aren't here. Maybe, because of people dropping or what not. Anyway, here's the results:

Casual elf deck that I created to play with skullclamp more.
Quote

Mana:
14 Forest

4   [card]Llanowar Elves[/card]

Control & Tutoring:
4   [card]Viridian Zealot[/card]
4   [card]Land Grant[/card]
1   [card]Wellwisher[/card]
1   [card]Wirewood Herald[/card] / [card]Priest of Titania[/card]

Engine:
Draw:
4   [card]Skullclamp[/card]
2   [card]Bloodline Shaman[/card]

Enabler:
4   [card]Quirion Ranger[/card]
4   [card]Elvish Spirit Guide[/card]

Aggro/ combo deck that uses skullclamp our other means to combo out. Pretty obvious what the combos are:
1. Wirewood Hivemaster + Skullclamp + Earthcraft || Fastbond
2. Wirewood Hivemaster + Symbiote Elf + Skullclamp
3. Quirion Ranger + Bloodline Shaman
4. Caller of the Claw + Skullclamp
etc.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Thx

Does anyone have any input into how this will change the currrent metta game.
4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Magus of the Unseen in UR Fish? on: August 29, 2004, 11:59:45 am
Umm...

[card]Magus of the Unseen[/card] {1}{U}
creature - wizard
{1}{U}, {T}: Untap target artifact an opponent controls and gain control of it until end of turn. If it's an artifact creature, it gains haste until end of turn. When you lose control of the artifact, tap it.  1/1

It's at least worth a couple of slots in the side against workshop decks, but it doesn't really add anything against combo or control matchups.

Why is [card]Old Man of the Sea[/card] in here. Mirror, 4CC, or welder control?
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Single Card Discussion]Eternal Witness on: May 02, 2004, 12:32:01 pm
Eternal Witness - {1}{G}{G}
Creature - Human Shaman F Dawn
When Eternal Witness comes into play, return target card from your graveyard to your hand.
2/1
Uncommon

If this rumor is true, does anyone think 5 color control might be revitalized in a aggro-control style. Or can this card mean that regrowth may see unrestriction.

Ex. EW a ancestral, time walk, vampiric tutor, etc.

Splash red for sideboarded...

What I'm trying to do is focus my attention on the limitations and possible improvements so that I may metagame the deck better and push the other versions to thier limits. I have all the parts for the Cherry, Blueberry, Lime, and even Dark + ABM Parfaits. This is a deck discussion specifically for Parfait and not its hybrids. I'm sorry I didn't state that clearly.

Quote from: Entropy
I think 4 chants and 3 abeyances are too many... Also, ... you don't really have enough creature control. All you really have (unless I missed something) are 2 swords, balance, and (possibly) humility... You (also) use disenchant in the deck... Seal of Cleansing is better. One final thing, I don't think you should be playing with the mana crypt since the deck is not really a fast deck...

To your first remark: 4 chants and 3 abeyances are important for a control and combo heavy metagame. What I decided on was to try to maximize the possibilites of each hand, and to do that I had to find a way to abuse argivian find(which combos as and extra draw engine now). The [card]Sunbeam Spellbomb[/card]s are extra control against aggro, and I actually run 3x swords (I think you may have misread).

To your next remark: I believe the disenchant ability to be played from hand is an important ability, and I do run Seal of Cleansing. I just believe that [card]stifle[/card] is to an important a consideration to run more Seals.

Your third comment: Yeah thier cool  Wink

and lastly: Mana Crypt should really only be considered a midgame excellerant unless your playinng against combo or you have a scroll rack and the crypt in your hand against control.

Thanks  Wink

Quote from: Tristal
I haven't had Chrome Mox or Mox Diamond work well in Parfait, and I've cut both.

Not all spells are usefull against everything, and mana excelleration is important for control.

Thanks

There is an extended deck that revolves around [card]isochron scepter[/card], [card]orims chant[/card], and [card]fire/ice[/card]. You might want to try to add power to it but if I were you I would consider what you face first. Anyway don't you think you might be a little to sentimental?

I honestly forgot about it. I guess after I pulled it off my want list I haven't given it another thought since, and also I wrote this post up late last night anyway. I think it is worth a try parfait with a splash, although it is not free, but mainly because it can be imprinted unto a scepter. I think it should be included in the list above. Thanks, I'll update.  The only problems I think I have with it is its redundency on the parfait players hands.  Confused
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Parfait - Hardcore Control on: March 11, 2004, 02:16:15 pm
That is a pretty wierd build. I am personally playing Blueberry myself and I enjoy it, but I have one question for you. If you are running only 8 basic lands and 3x land grant, wounldn't you only need 3x land tax as it pretty much becomes a midgame threat. Also I think you would be able to adjust the deck so that it would have 4x scroll racks if you would like.

I also think 2x humility is more imortant then moat, but thats just me. Very Happy

I've broken a great number of Scepter-Chant 'locks'...

@ Mat

I believe you misunderstand. Parfait wants to get its permanents out as quickly as possible, and what your saying is that I wouldn't use the chant as a [card]xantid swarm[/card]. Orim's chant should be used only to gain board position against control.

Quote
You will notice I took out the Humility, since you have no need for creatures.

@ Machinus

How does not playing creatures warent you to not play humility? And why are you using [card]ivory tower[/card] instead of [card]karmic justice[/card]? Raise the alarm is golden in my book as for chump blocking early and swarming later.
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Parfait - Hardcore Control on: March 11, 2004, 01:21:40 am
Origins: For those of us who are unfamiliar to parfait, it can be confusing and often difficult deck to play correctly. Parfait, which was originally created by K-Run(AKA Raphaël Caron) around 2001, is a mono-white control deck that utilizes a [card]land tax[/card]/ [card]scroll rack[/card] engine with [card]zuran orb[/card] to create massive card advantage and abuse silver bullets that deny an opponents strategy. The deck also has roots that can be traced as far back as the first balance deck, to the icy/ winter orb of ice age, plus the pt junk w/ [card]seismic assault[/card], and even the former Tier 1 parfait that killed via [card]Sacred Mesa[/card]. Soon after, problems with tutoring became more apparent as the speed of the format pushed this control deck to its limits. New and improved decks seem to just steamroll Parfait with fresh card pools, while whites best hope in tutoring; [card]golden wish[/card] (from the supposed white set) only proves that white will always have the worst tutoring in the game. Evil or Very Mad

So fast forward a bit too why I think parfait is playable.

Synopsis: The card pool has broadened enough that parfait has a new host of tools to work with. Instead of being limited to the one time use of a spell and the limits of tutoring, parfait has been introduced a new tool to much the same effect as [card]scroll rack[/card] to its deck manipulation. Also the deck has access to new kill conditions that may work much the same way [card]cursed scroll[/card] and [card]sacred mesa[/card] do. It is also a very affordable deck at $150 on average, and is easily splash able to fit any specific meta.

The Chronies:
[card]isochron scepter[/card]: This card is the solution to Parfaits tutoring problem. Recursion A control opponent has no choice on rather to counter this or not, in much the same way the scroll rack draws counters. This in return gives the Parfait player more "have to counter threats" to its arsenal, and even the ability to bluff better then before. [card]argivian find[/card] gives the scepter an even sharper edge against mirror matchs' involving scepters.
Recommended 2-4

[card]orims chant[/card]: Anything from control, aggro, and combo should fear this first. If it hits first turn on a scepter the opponent is all but dead and will build up [card]land tax[/card] for you hastening your kill. Recommended 4

[card]swords to plowshares[/card]: Reanimator hate that doesn't forgive. If it hits a scepter most aggro decks should scoop.
Recommended 4

[card]raise the alarm[/card]: Another of parfaits new tricks. The benefit of this card is its ability to replace [card]Sacred Mesa[/card]. Alarm can be played early on to take out weenies in a way that mesa could never. It also has a bonus of becoming a kill condition against control, and can handle [card]smokestack[/card] better then T4K$S if imprinted on a scepter.
Recommended 2-4

[card]Abeyance[/card]: This should make it easier against control and combo. Almost surely you should side out 4x swords for this (unless dragon, then side out the alarm). It cuts the number of storm effects severely crippling [card]tendrils of agony[/card]
Recommended 2 or 4 side.

Protection:
[card]Argivian Find[/card]: This recursion should fish out counters when you know your opponent has them. When you have them in hand you should push the opponent to the limits of their hand with debilitating artifacts or enchantments that you have stored. Otherwise it's a good effect against aggro decks that main destruction or side it in and in no circumstance should these be sided out unless you have full knowledge of your opponent.
Recommended 3-4

[card]Story Circle[/card]: This is card above all else that will save you against burn, goblins, stompy, or even hold off a rampaging hulk(Dr. Teeth)
Recommended 1-2

[card]Aura of Silence[/card]: Moxes never looked more expensive and [card]goblin welder[/card]s have to work harder to get the best of it destroyed. This will also be the card that you need most to take out nev. disk if landstill is played in your meta.
Recommended 2-3 1 side if possible

[card]Humility[/card]: Creatures win games. Whether it's a [card]morphling[/card] or a [card]goblin welder[/card] just make them 1/1 tykes your soldiers will mop up. This will keep you alive with [card]zuran orb[/card].
Recommended 1-2

[card]Karmic Justice[/card]: [card]Pernicious deed[/card] is bad against you, but if this is out it's worse for them.
Recommended 1-3

[card]Enlightened Tutor[/card]/ [card]Balance[/card]: Broken

The Kill Option:
[card]goblin charbelcher[/card]: Finally the most important piece to make this deck list competitive. The problem with [card]sacred mesa[/card] was that it is to slow. With this condition just laying a [card]land tax[/card] achieves its goal. This card also has an advantage of dealing colorless damage to creatures and players alike.

Side:
[card]Rule of Law[/card]: Side this in whenever you play against combo and maybe even control(untested) as it slows them to a crawl while the parfait player can just play abilities to further setup the win.
-2x [card]story circle[/card] +2 of these.

[card]Dust to Dust[/card]: Mass artifact hate mainly against TnT, T4K$S, and mask.
-2x [card]story circle[/card] +2 of these.

[card]Tormods Crypt[/card]: Dragon, tog, reanimator, or even any welder variants will get punished from these

[card]Jesters Cap[/card]: For decks with limited kill conditions. Best against control
-1x [card]Humility[/card] +1 of these

[card]Soldevi Digger[/card]: Side this in against Dragon or any control deck that might be able to deck.

[card]Tsabos Web[/card]: Many decks tend to run [card]wasteland[/card]s and manlands now. So feel obliged to make it harder for them.

Considerations: Parfait is a deck that fortunately may splash different colors for extra control. There are also other cards that a parfait player may add to their list based on their needs. What to play depends on the player and what their expected matchs' are.

-Cherry Parfait: Utillizes 2x [card]gorilla shaman[/card] mained with [card]blood moon[/card] for non-basic hate. Among the usual broken cards in parfait, [card]burning wish[/card] may be added to smooth over the tutoring problems even more.

-Blueberry Parfait: Utilizes [card]back to basics[/card] instead of blood moons, and may also main [card]cunning wish[/card]es and [card]stifle[/card]s. Broken cards that may be added to this deck can range from [card]ancestral recall[/card] to [card]tinker[/card].

-Lime Parfait: Utilizes [card]sterling grove[/card] to protect a heavy enchantment based parfait, and fetch spells such as [card]land grant[/card] to thin the deck out further. Also may take advantage of [card]sylvan library[/card] as an additional [card]scroll rack[/card]. Among the selection of broken cards [card]crop rotation[/card] and [card]regrowth[/card] may be added for additional tutoring and extra recurssion, respectfully.

-Dark Parfait: From the original creator of parfait. Utillizes [card]vindicate[/card], [card]blood moon[/card]s and black tutoring for control.

-[card]Ivory Mask[/card]: Former mainboard piece of the original Parfait that protected against threats such as [card]lightning bolt[/card], [card]mind twist[/card], [card]hymn to tourach[/card], [card]duress[/card] and even [card]stroke of genius[/card]

-[card]Sacred Mesa[/card]: The former kill conditon of the old parfait. While being able to create quallity 1/1 flying tokens, its upkeep

-[card]mobilization[/card]: While not having a limitation like that of the mesa, the cost for each token is more exspensive and flying 1/1's are better then ones that don't tap.

-[card]spirit cairn[/card]: While this is an interesting card it is a totally different breed of parfait that demands that the deck be redesigened with its use, and so is out of scope of this descussion.

-[card]moat[/card]: This cards is amazing and is almost even better then [card]humility[/card], but it doesn't stop [card]morphling[/card]s, [card]psychatog[/card]s, [card]goblin welder[/card]s or even [card]seige-gang commander[/card]. Play it if you can afford it.

-[card]tithe[/card]: Land tutor that affords a parfait player dual lands that can be searched for. Also makes a decent imprint for [card]isochron scepter[/card]. See also dark parfait.

I hope this was informative, and will give some hope for white enthusiast. Enjoy!

Gat should rock the house againt all that other control. As for mask I would run venguer over the other mask as it's excellent against control and weenie alike, and I like the additionl FEB win condition. I also don't see much combo which aggro should just roll-over if you decide dragon.

@kowal

Soldevi Digger shines against control I just wouldn't main deck.

This deck has really out-dated tech. I mean 1x humility + 2x Moat + 3x Wrath of God  Confused  This may be good against a couple of decks but not that good. Goblins will just hurl them at you with goblin grenades or Siege-Gang Commander and 0- stompy will just naturalize or rebuild quicker then you.

First off I'd like to say that your question about running 3x FOW main and 1x side is odd, but for different reasons then what then just lack of optimal counters. If you FOW 1x, chances are pretty good that you may remove another FOW/ Mana Drain and therefore have already set up a wish target. I don't believe running a suboptimal counter main is going to produce better results. I think the reason that running a counter with such a high draw back is not only acceptable, but wiser, is because it is only accessed as a last ditch effort. The power of cunning wish shines best in reacting to specific threats. Allay, Shattering Pulse, Swords, stifle(jester's cap and such) are all wish targets that handle certain needs. The only ofther need that should be should be considered are mind twist effects. Effects that have direct hand disruption(misdir), counter war(witch FOW may support you anyway), Direct Head(ligtning bolt) and library threats are the only logical choices I see for reactive options in this spot. All those other subotimal but free counters do this and also work against combo. Guilded light also helps in most of these situations.

Hope this helps.

There is a primer on the older forums that was made before chrome mox was restricted. You need to add more artifact mana and try testing zuran orb or claws of gix.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Mono-Black Hatred on: February 06, 2004, 07:42:47 pm
Awesome thanks for all the imput. I have been thinking about what everyone has posted and I have decided to shift the deck toward more sickness styed removal. I added to the count of [card]contagion[/card] simply for its ability to be played without mana which is important considering that those creatures can seriously mame me. Also I decided to add 2x [card]drain life[/card] which I can use effectively as a tempo swing. Whether I need to get an opponent into [card]hatred[/card] range or just finish the opponent or a creature off they just do thier job. After alot of consideration I also added gloomdrifter mainly because of random WW pro creatures which this creature has great effect with [card]lake of the dead[/card].

Creatures:
4x [card]Phyrexian Negator[/card]
4x [card]Duathi Slayer[/card]
3x [card]Festering Goblin[/card]
1x [card]Gloomdrifter[/card] Razz

Control:
4x [card]Hymn to Tourach[/card]
4x [card]Duress[/card]
4x [card]Contagion[/card]
2x [card]Drain Life[/card]

Huh?
2x [card]Hatred[/card]
2x [card]Cursed Scroll[/card]
1x [card]Vampiric Tutor[/card]
1x [card]Demonic Tutor[/card]
1x [card]Demonic Consultation[/card]
1x [card]Necropotence[/card]
1x [card]Yawgmoths Will[/card]

Mana:
18x [card]Swamp[/card]
4x [card]Dark Ritual[/card]
2x [card]Lake of the Dead[/card]

All current card choices are made based on the pool of cards I own and not what I want. Gloomdrifter would probably be exchanged for bane of the living or infest but with untill then I will just deal. I don't have the other 2x [card]hatred[/card] and honestly I don't really want them with [card]necropotence[/card]. I believe that the deck has more consistency with just x2. [card]festering goblin[/card] is proven enough to be both a good source of control and disruption and deserves a spot next to [card]contagion[/card] + [card]phyrexian negator[/card]. [card]sacromancy[/card] is nice but negligiable and the goblin is easy contagion fodder.

Bio:
Ok A little background might help you to understand my situation and the reasoning behind this deck. Basically I got this job at a dojo/ comic shop which never held any sort of organized games. The place really wants to have me set up the place so that they can let people come in on the weekend. The problem was when I got the job I wasn't sure what kind of games that would work the best for the shop. Another local shop runs completely draft and I'm not sure (nore do I really have much interest in T1 <--Edit: Opps I meant T2  Wink ) which kind of format would be good for that gamers that would attend. So I thought an all commons tourney would be the best way to start. I can just run a few games without it getting out of hand and then choose from there. So far the rules I have decided on are T-1 pool all  commons with rares + uncommons C.o.P.s + R.o.P.s all banned.

Surely with this just starting I know there probably won't be more then a few of my friends so I decided if I'm going to get this started I might need to play a few games to even out attendence. I don't mind since I'm pretty sure I can find someone else who will substitute anyway, but I'd rather be prepared anyway. So here... up for critque please discuss, and thanks.

1x   [card]Aura Fracture[/card]
1x   [card]Dust to Dust[/card]

Breakdown:

Creatures:
[card]daru spiritualist[/card]: This shoud almost be considered as the foundation of this deck. This creature adds to the deck a demension for creatures to be capable of becoming an unstopable line of defence. Tim's + red + green should all be easy to take care if both [card]Nomads en-Kor[/card] combo together.

[card]Nomads en-Kor[/card] Transfers all damage that would havve been done from aggro, burn, or tim's and and redirects that damage to creatures that can handle it.

[card]Crimson Acolyte[/card]: All in all powerhouse against red. This card along with [card]daru spiritualist[/card] + [card]Nomads en-Kor[/card] is capable of shutting down red completely.

[card]Order of Leitbur[/card]: This is included because the amount of black creature removal available in commons. This will carry a game against black with its only limitations being weakness spells. Also it is another cleric that gains abilities from [card]daru spiritualist[/card] + [card]Nomads en-Kor[/card] combo.

[card]Soul Warden[/card]: Commmons tourneys have a large amount of creatures. So much that these are nearly mandatory. Also it is another cleric that gains abilities from [card]daru spiritualist[/card] + [card]Nomads en-Kor[/card] combo.

[card]auramancer[/card]: This is a creature that adds extra flexability to this deck. It is able to fetch [card]empyrial armor[/card] from the graveyard, and is capable of being a powerhouse against aggro with [card]angelic renewal[/card] to make an incincible creature.

[card]Razor Golem[/card]: This is the newest edition to the pool of commons for white. While it is a better version of [card]phyrexian war beast[/card] it is also needs more testing. Most effective against blue and aggro match ups where bounce can kill your development, and the "doesn't tap to attack" is nice aggainst any beats.

Control:
[card]Kirtars Desire[/card]: With [card]pacisfism[/card] costing two mana this becomes an effective spell with an added bonus of being able to be cast early. It is also extra control from creatures that may have trample or evasion.

[card]Angelic Renewal[/card]: This card mainly becomes an insurance that these annoying combos go off multiple times. Also this helps against having a defence weakening to much before it becomes inpenatrable.

[card]Desert[/card]: Direct damage against weenies or those last points needed to finish of larger creatures. This card can clear the board and it also pushes the limits on what yout opponent can attack with.

Gear:
[card]Empyrial Armor[/card]: This cards strength is that it works by making you play conservatively while turning any weenie into a sloid threat. With that added bonus of recurssion with [card]aurmancer[/card] this should be considered on of you choicest of beat down.

[card]Army of Allah[/card]: The best thing about this card is the fact that hardly no one knows about it, adding more of a surprise to an otherwise lame attack phase of most white decks. This card alone can destroy all combat math for an opponent and destroy many of thier creatures while also being able to cause massive damage if any are unblocked.

[card]Bonesplitter[/card]: While [card]empyrial armor[/card] is a card that can swing a game into your favor, any timed creature removal can way the disadvantages of playing creature enchantments against you. The staying power of this ensures its place above playing 3x - 4x [card]empyrial armor[/card] for the ability to ensure less tempo loss.

Considerations:

1. [card]phyrexain war beast[/card] + 2x [card]remote farm[/card] over [card]razor golem[/card]?

2. Side [card]obsidian acolyte[/card]?

3. Will [card]nausea[/card] be a problem?

4. Is the deck stable enough against [card]aether burst[/card]?

Wink Your alright, but I think you missed the lakes of the dead. I do like your advice about the atrifact mana, but I have it in a serious deck right now and I'm trying to keep this janky but serious(Hope that isn't confussing Rolling Eyes I would love to add chrome + diamond). What I'm really worried about though is the negators. They can help me plow over but I'm affraid it might lose me more games.

Hello This is the current monoblack deck that I have. It uses Haterd for a second or fifth turn kill and I am posting it up for crituque because I'm thinking about playing it at a local shop, where I go to draft, just to humilliate this newb that is acting like an ass. I was thinking that it would be a good experience for him to face mono-black-sui.

Creatures:
4x Phyrexian Negator
4x Duathi Slayer
3x Festering Goblin

Control:
4x Hymn to Tourach
4x Duress
3x Diabolic Edict
2x Contagion

Huh?
2x Hatred
2x Cursed Scroll
1x Vampiric Tutor
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Demonic Consultation
1x Necropotence
1x Yawgmoth's Will

Mana:
20x Swamps
4x Dark Ritual
2x Lake of the Dead

Aggro is the only deck newbs play, and I only have 1x nantuko + it wouldn't be very consistant. So...any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Omg this is ugly.

First off you need to fix the mana base. This deck can take pain better then anything else so add 4x ancient tombs and 1x crop rotation to smooth to tutor them out. Second you don' need 8x creature enchantments for 7x creatures so drop all and side the spirit links to handle aggro. 4x words do nothing in multiples, and also the well does nothing in multiples either + taps you out. I say subtract 2x of each.

You can take it from there
28  Eternal Formats / Creative / Stasis/Crucible Combo on: January 31, 2004, 12:06:17 am
Hi all first I'd like to say thanks for all the imput.

Now, what I think that the Zorb/ CofW adds to the mix is really a damage prevention to the stasis player from heavy aggro(esspecially if you believe aggro is rough where you play). Squandered Resources could be possible with the right kind of tinkering although I never had it in mind. As for adding kismet  I think this is where the primer would have been more helpfull. Instead of letting an opponent build up mana so that they  may then afford thier spells or using kismet or root maze. I think another card would probably work better.

Equipoise: During your upkeep, for each land target player controls in excess of the number of lands you control, target land phases out. Repeat this process for artifacts and then for creatures.
29  Eternal Formats / Creative / Draw Engines on: January 30, 2004, 04:07:21 pm
"how does the nether spirit work with skeletal scrying? unless you mean to remove all the other creatures from the graveyard? so that'll net 1 card for 2 mana each turn, right?"

Yeah pretty much. As a draw engine you run into the problem of drawing other nether spirits. So it's really there for skeletal fodder which can increase the amount drawn. It's really made for a creatureless deck.

"tax/rack is pretty old, used in ww, but zorb isn't used together"

Some do so it deserves honerable mention.

"exploration/horn is the turboland engine, no?"

yup
30  Eternal Formats / Creative / Competitive Mono-Black on: January 30, 2004, 03:51:14 pm
I voted no because I belive that it has a weak compliment of 1cc spells that work with nantuko shade

As for mono-black not being able to handle aggro...

Theres always will-o'-the wisp, festering goblin(lol), cursed scroll, duathi slayer + other shadow, poder keg, chalice of the void(although I think the mana curves have gotten alot better) and infest. But there is a lack of artifact hate so...
