That pic is from the turn that you casted Sword of Fire and Ice and I casted Daze on it to make you pay 1 so you could not equip it that same turn. Swords to Plow Shares turn came 2-3 turns after.

BTW, thank you Jeff for taking time to take pictures and writing the coolest reports EVAAAR!!!!

if it makes you feel any better I had a second swords in hand I could have cast if you countered the first.

Yea, my friend told me you did, but you also had no other sources for white mana. GGs though, I got pwned by Jotun Grunts.

I noticed that a lot of people were interested in the U/R Goblins list and how it plays out. I myself took a chance and picked up the deck 10 hours before the tourney was to start after I decided to not play Pitch Long.

If anyone is interested I can write a small report/article about the deck and the changes that I would now make after I have played the deck.

From what I can tell you right now, the deck has good match-ups against Stax and Combo. Oath is a nightmare in game 1.

On a side note, I lost in top 8 due to a terrible misplay  Sad  As I can remember it, my opponent would have died to Dark Confidant and first tried to Stifle the ability so he would not have to reveal. I, at the point, totally blanked out, decided to hard cast FoW on it instead of the REB in my hand. After that, he used Swords to Plowshares on the Dark Confidant and gained 2 life. Revealed the Card and it was Brainstorm...Lol. O well, lesson learned.

Wouldn't you say that Infernal Contract is better than Windfall as suggested before? It can be played via any of the 8 rituals in the deck and it will always draw you 4 cards. The life loss does not seem to be much of a problem. Only problem I see is that you will mostly be spending a ritual in order to cast it.

Congrats on the finish and nice report.

Couple of questions regarding the deck...

Are there any changes you would make to the list after playing at the championshiop?
Is Ninja of the Deep Hours still needed in the deck even though you have Dark Confidants?

What is the worse matchup for the deck?

Thanks for the report, btw.

[Edit]  Have you considered Withered Wretch as a creature since it forces Welder.dec and Dragon to go belly up?

Your Creatures are bigger than any other aggro/fish deck out there. Except for maybe a little help agaist oath, I cant see why wonder is needed in the deck...so you can fly over a colossus? I just feel those two slots can be used for something more effective. Otherwise, the deck looks really fun to play and I will tinker with it on MWS.  Very Happy

The Oath player is my friend John. We made the deck for him the night before...what a way to pick it up!

He was running a build that was mostly ICBM oath...from what I can remember...it had Mana Leaks instead of Mana Drains, which was probably the better choice except for about 2 situations the entire day. There were some other small changes...the only one I can remember ATM is 1 Misdirection in MD and and SB was different.

It seems the only way to play Back to Basics on turn 1 or 2 is if you draw your Lotus for turn one or draw Sapphire for turn 2. I would try to play a mana base of full moxen and run Chalice of the Void over Null Rod, that way you can still play Aether Vial.

Also consider running Dandan. Maybe even Cloud of Faeries as Aether Vial tricks using them are pretty sweet.

Congrats on the finish. BTW how is the stax match-up for ICMB oath?
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: What is the Optimal Deck to play in a balanced metagame? on: April 13, 2006, 06:49:22 pm
Could The Jester be a good choice for this type of meta-game? I mean that is if I configure the deck correctly to face decks that are not merely defeated by the
activation of a single Jesters Cap. What are your toughts on this?
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / What is the Optimal Deck to play in a balanced metagame? on: April 13, 2006, 02:59:31 am
First Ill introduce myself, I guess, I have been a lurker on The Mana Drain website for about 8 months now and slowly carving myself into a vintage player  Very Happy  I can finally say that I believe I have acquired most of the required skills/cards needed to be a competitive vintage player. In the past I have enter numerous local T1 tourney for small playing all sorts of different decks. After doing well in most of them and scrubbing out in others, I believe I should actually take a long long road trip and play at a more skill intensive vintage tourney. Here is where my problem kicks in...

I have looked over the meta-game and it appears to be pretty much equally distributed between the top archetypes (+/- 5% or so...). Basically, the meta game
contains pretty much equal amounts of the following archetypes:

Gifts (all kinds, included)
Bob based (combo, gifts, etc.)
Slaver (all kinds)
Stacks (all kinds)
Combo (grim long, some dragon and IT)
Oath (all kinds, includes salvager oath)
Fish (mostly UBW)
and other less abundant decks such as charbelcher, gilded claw, etc.

The decks towards the top are a little more abundant. I can make any deck that can be played in T1 and I have experience playing most of these decks and can learn to quickly play them near perfectly.

Now to the main point, what would you, TMD community, think would be the best choice to play in such a metagame...Please leave decknames and any possible changes you might make to the deck/sideboard to make it better compete in this type of meta game. Thanks all in advance.

First of all I would like to say this was a great article and I enjoyed reading it.

My question is this...

You discussed the Oath matchup only while you were describing your card choices. I was wondering why you didn't discuss this matchup as a whole category as you did with the others.

And...If it had to do with the article lenth as you metioned earlier, would you please talk about the matchup here a little bit and include sideboarding plans. I am asking this because there are lots of oath players in my area. Thanks a bunch.  Smile

Going a little off topic and A LOT off the traditional fish-like deck card choices but...there are over 10 permanent artifacts in the deck. Is it possible for the inclusion of Tinker and some GG artifact(s)?
