1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Set Dates on: May 24, 2004, 01:47:14 pm
Hello,
This is a weird question, and once answered the forum can be closed. What was the date for the release of 8th edition? Was it before or after the onslaught block?
Thanks.
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Selling lots of cards (LoA, Duals, Itl. Drain, and more) on: May 19, 2004, 07:08:15 pm
Hi,
I would be interested in the 2 Portuguese Survivals, and the Vampiric tutor. Please let me know the prices of all three and for the two surivals.
Thanks.
3  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Article] How to Run a Type One Tournament on: April 22, 2004, 11:21:51 am
@ Dr. Sylvan and Smmenen, -- Going along with what Dr. Sylvan said, what kind of prizes would be worth 2nd - 8th? After the 1st place piece of power, how far do you drop for 2nd, 3rd and so on.

(Edit) Assume you have 40 people and the hall that was used cost $300... what type of prizes would attract more people to come.

Finally Smmenen,  what day and time are best suited for type 1 tournaments? I tried holding one a few weeks ago on a saturday at 11:00 am, and was told it was too early. What do you think an acceptable starting time should be?
Thanks again.
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Anti Mud/Slaver Task force... on: April 12, 2004, 07:27:16 pm
Hi,
I guess the topic states it all. I am looking to you guys and gals here to help me with single cards that will put Slaver and Mud in their place.  I play in a wide open metagame, and currently play- Hulk which has very little problem with slaver, gro a tog- (which again is ok with slaver and mud).

But that is beside the point. I am trying to find things to plug in that may give slaver/mud fits, and at the same time help out players that are getting smacked around by these two horrible decks.

The way I see it the three cards that are essential to the lock are Welder, (alone harmless), Smokestack, and Tanglewire and Mindslaver are the ones that need to be taken care of.

Here is my small list of what may work.
Red- Crash, Pulverize
Artifact- Nev's Disk, Null Rod (vs slaver, and you better be sure not to have any artifacts in the grave)
Gold- Hull Breach, Artifact Mutation
Green- Naturalize, Crumble, Woodripper (though it is expensive as hell)
White- Disenchant,

Does anyone have any ideas how to deal with these monsters of decks?  I am asking anyone who has sideboards or even maindeck ideas for these.
Thanks in advance.
5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Report]GAT takes more New Jersey Power on: April 07, 2004, 11:11:14 am
@ rico suave
so in essence it is like the NCAA tournament then? anything more than 32 gets an extra round, over 64 gets another round etc. The change has been noted and will be put into effect for the next tournament.

@ Grand Inquisitor, and Ultima
If you guys can give me a definite number to go from 5 to 6 rounds it will be added for the next tournament. I have heard 32 and 40. Please let me know so we can make the appropriate changes for the next time.
Thanks again.

I thought there would be 6 rounds but they cut a round(about 40 people) because of time I think.
...
The TO's said they'll start it later and maybe try to find more good prizes.

@ thecapn
<< What's up with rounds getting cut?  People aren't going to want to take up type 1 if shit like this keeps happening.  >>

Let me clarify as one of the TO's... IT was advertised as a 5 not 6 round tournament. I am grateful to TMD's who came and explained why there should be a 6th round, but no round was cut, and if we have 40 people the next time a 6th round WILL be added. This was also taken VERY seriously. We made sure that for our first tournament we wanted EVERYONE to be happy. Unfortunately every tournament we had ever been to was 5 rounds. I do apologize for this however, it was advertised as a 5 round swiss.

On another note, all we got was positive feedback from the tournament, from the competitors. We will make 2 big changes for next time...
1. Register deck lists (thanks Mith)
2. If we have 40 people (that seems to be the consensus) we will have 6 rounds.
Thanks.

Ultima,
Great job in the tournament. I was one of the organizers, and let me tell you the guy you beat in the quarterfinals (welder/mud) was ticked off. He is working out his deck to face tog as I type this.

@urza's child- 1st was a choice of Mox, 2nd-5th was Forcefield, Abyss, Signed Morphling and a foil Nantucko Shade. The tournament was held in Perth Amboy NJ, and, we're looking to hold another one in a couple months.
Hope more TMD members show up and enjoy themselves.
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / 4/3 NJ Mox tournament results and such on: April 04, 2004, 08:39:53 am
Hello everyone,
The tournament was a success and we will be trying to do another one. I will let you know when. Thank you to all of the Mana Drainers who did come out to take part.

We had a 5 round swiss style format and cut to the top 8 after that. After the 5 rounds there were
5 Gat/Tog variants
1 Food Chain Goblins
1 Welder Mud
1 (other I honestly can't remember)

The top 4 were 3 Gat/Tog variants and 1 food chain goblins.

The way it all panned out was
1st place- Tog
2nd place Tog
3rd place- Tog
4th place- Food Chain Goblins.

Three of the top 4 places were Mana Drainers.

I don't know result etiquette so pleas let me know if I need to add anything else to this regarding results.

As for other things, I would like to thank those who gave us suggestions for the next time. We will definately use some if not all of them. If you attended and have any further suggestions please let me know.

Seth, I apologize again for the problem we had at the beginning of the tournament. It won't happen again. Cool
thanks again everyone for coming.

Hi one more time,
last day to pay by paypal.....

one more UPDATE!!!!

Ok we are going to be starting the tournament PROMPTLY at 10:30 AM. If you are late you may be given a forfeit if you don't play the first round.

The reason for the promptness is because we have been informed we may only have the hall that we booked for a specific amount of time. I just wanted to forewarn everyone on this however.

Hope to see some of you there.

@stallymcstallstall- there is only one person who could have this name... is it B Aiken?

anyways.... there are only 2 days left (including today) to get me to make the proxies for you.

Paypal- rsab81@aol.com

see everyone there.
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / 3 Land Belcher for Turny on: March 29, 2004, 10:48:54 am
I run 3-4 lands in my belcher deck, but I make sure they are Taiga's or Badlands. This is for the double damage factor of hitting the red land. So far 3-4 lands has been optimal for me as there is A LOT of wasteland activity in my meta. If for some reason I don't get the whole engine first turn and get wiped out with a wasteland I get rather annoyed.

@mistershark
No, I am sorry that it may have come across that way. There will be a minimal charge for snacks, ie soda, cakes, etc.  I apologize for the misconception.
14  Eternal Formats / Creative / Type 1 NJ Tournament (5 Proxy Swiss style) on: March 26, 2004, 08:01:29 am
we are supplying snacks for the tourney.

There is a dominos that delivers, and there is a deli about 2 blocks away. and as for chinese I am sure there is a place near by however whether it is good or not... you will have to let us know.
15  Eternal Formats / Creative / The Best way to Teach? on: March 25, 2004, 10:51:35 am
Hey,
I am also from NJ and actually teach about 30-50 kids a year (I am a teacher) and we have a club here at school. What I do first is tell them about the colors and their advantages/disadvantages.

Red- Direct D, semi weak creatures and protection
Blue Control, Slower
Green Big creatures, Lots of Mana but cards not the greatest, overcosting creatures etc.
Black- Denial, Hand Destruction, Decent Creatures, Fun to play, Heavy protection against
White... well you get the idea...

Then I use old playmats... (I had bought the classic and the 8th edition starter kits) and they have playmats to teach the kids/people about library, grave, in play, life total, draw etc. it even lays out the steps for them... untap, upkeep, draw, main 1, attack/block, main 2, discard etc...

The stack really need not be a factor in the initial stages. This was how I learned and I have since taught about 3-400 people how to play this way over the last 6 years or so. Hope that helped a bit.
16  Eternal Formats / Creative / Type 1 NJ Tournament (5 Proxy Swiss style) on: March 24, 2004, 12:30:22 pm
Ok we're coming up on 10 days to go before the tournament.
Here is what we have so far.

- Doors open at 9:45

-1st round begins at 10:30

- Solid prizes (top 5)

- Age will range from 12-?? (34 is the highest confirmed attendee thus far)

- Refreshments will be made available

- 4 Dealer tables including Artist/Illustrator Alan Pollack- who will be signing cards throughout the day at little if any cost to you.

- a range of competitive levels from Newbie to power decks.

- WWE raw deal and Yugiyoh side tournaments

- Magic the Gathering draft tournaments beginning after the 1st round.

-  paypal address of RSAB81@aol.com for prepayers

- preregistration fee is $15, but if you choose to  register the day of the tournament it will be $20

- 5 Proxies allowed, color preferred but black and white proxies will be acceptable - as long as the card is printed and slid into a sleeve.

I have read a few posts here on the newbie forum about stealing of cards, if you are caught stealing, you will automatically be ejected from the tournament and the building. If the person wishes to press charges he/she will be allowed to call the police and have matters taken care of there.

If you are suspected of cheating, you will be warned. If you are suspected a 2nd time by another player you will be DQ'd if the judges feel enough evidence is there to DQ someone.

If anyone has any further questions please feel free to contact me at Yawgmoths_win@yahoo.com or reply here.
Hope to see you guys there.

21  Eternal Formats / Creative / Creating Realistic Proxies on: March 12, 2004, 11:15:44 am
I do the realistic proxies because I don't want to have any or much discrepancy in the cards. Taped or glued on paper makes the cards heavier and therefor easier to tell when touching them. I also am somewhat of a perfectionist and need to have thenm as good as possible. (that may be just me though)

AS for the number of proxies my cirlce plays, We made a rule that we are allowed only to proxy what we physically own for other decks. Ie if you own a black lotus you can proxy a black lotus. I personally own 7 of the power 10 and do proxy those. I also own collectors edition of the other 3 power 10, that we also allow others to play and therefore proxy.
Anyways that is my reasoning for using and making the proxies I have, and our rules for proxying.
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Creating Realistic Proxies on: March 11, 2004, 11:46:33 am
mine goes around as well. The card should be fine as long as it is secure. Give it a try.
23  Eternal Formats / Creative / Creating Realistic Proxies on: March 11, 2004, 10:28:18 am
Sometimes however you get a sticky residue from peeling the foil. I have resorted to sanding down regular commons.

AS for which scans are best... I have used both essential magic and magictrade.dk and the latter is the better quality picture. (go to the Kort section)

All you have to do is print out a copy of the card you want to proxy. (after you resize it to fit a magic card.
I use microsoft word.
I copy the picture, paste it to word, then resize it.
Usually 2.37 wide x 3.37 high,
Print the card in greyscale..
cut out the printed version...
fit your sanded common on the back (you chould have a small border around the whole card)
tape it down (leave a little flap for you to take the tape off)
send it through the printer again. (settings- Highest quality print (non greyscale) and PLAIN paper.
Let it dry for a few hrs.
then spray it with polyeurothane to give it a gloss look.
let me know how it goes.
24  Eternal Formats / Creative / Creating Realistic Proxies on: March 10, 2004, 06:56:07 pm
1. It depends on what kind of printer you have. I would suggest a laser printer first. But inkjet works ok as well.

2. You have to either 1- peel the face off a foil card 9relatively easy but the card can get sticky, or 2 sand down the face of a common and print right over it. Again it depends on they quality of your printer but that is the basic jist of it.

good luck,

The "Braintrust" of this tournament met last night to discuss some concerns and answer some questions. here it is:

Updated Info-
1. It has been brought to my attention that some people may think that this is a $35 dollar tournament. It is NOT! If you pay before the tournament, the fee is $15... if you pay the day of the tournament, the fee is $20.

2. Unrelated to magic, at this tournament, there will also be side tournaments for $6.00 of Yugiyoh and WWE Raw deal. (CONSTRUCTED) Prizes yet to be determined but most likely packs for the winner.

3. The 1st Draft format tournament will begin at 12:00 not 10:30

4. WWE and Yugiyoh will begin at or around 12:15.

5. A paypal account will be up shortly. (I just set up an account, and Paypal said it takes 2-3 days for my bank to verify it or something so by friday there will be an account up and running).
As I get the news so will you. Hope to see some people there...
26  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Deck Discussion] Psychatog (with some strange card choices) on: March 09, 2004, 07:51:50 am
Ok I know this may suck but I still run one Gush, also if you are splashing red for the shaman and are determined to use Isochron Scepter, why not throw in a Fire/Ice? I run one without an Isochron, and it has done well for me.

Finally I agree with Jazzycat, Play a 3rd Psychatog and drop the Infiltrators. I tested them a while back and it sucked ass, it made things too slow to be honest. I found I wound up pitching them to the FOW or the MisDirection more than I did playing them.

27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Type 1 NJ Tournament (5 Proxy Swiss style) on: March 08, 2004, 08:41:27 am
Update- I will be putting up a paypal account for anyone who wishes to pay in advance of the tournament. Once I get the info into the system I will post here and let you know the email address to send your payment.

There will be other news regarding the tournament coming shortly as those of us co-sponsoring it are meeting on Tuesday March 9th to discuss further details.
Thanks.

PS- Regarding proxies.  Arrow  I do know that there will be some Newbies there who do not have any power and may not know what some of the older cards are,(or do) so I would like to address this issue. We would like it if you could bring scanned/printed proxies of the card in order to stop any potential whining of what a card might be. If you pay by paypal, you can email me and I will print the 5 proxies out for you and give them to you in an envelope the day of the tournament. (However this offer stands only until 3/31. I will not be able to print proxies out after that date.
Thank you again...

Lockdown-This tournament is a trial run to see if we can hold them regularly.  If it is a success, then we will hold them and I'll ask Zherbus for the Tournment organizer status. If it is unsuccessful we may have to scrap the idea after this tourney. This one is booked and set however.

Attmore- Yeah I know Greg, we play magic almost every thursday night either at his shop or the place where the tournament is (a group of us that is, Type 1 only).  Thanks for vouching for Greg.

As some of you have expressed an interest in the start time here is a message regarding it: Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the hall we booked (and paid for) they needed us to begin around 10 AM, so I started pre registration a few minutes early and such (for Mr. Pollack and the dealer tables to set up as well.)

The hall itself holds quite a bit of people, well over 150 and that is giving us room to breathe and walk around. It should be a very fun day.
