Jacob: I've been playing the bouncelands and I have to say I do like them quite a bit. I also remodeled my list quite a bit. I will post when I have some more time to type. It is still creature based control, but I am running thopter foundry/sword of the meek combo in it as well. Dropping them into play with some mana open is a serious game breaker.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Skittles on: June 13, 2010, 05:09:36 am
I had soul manipulation in my list at one point, it is pretty good in certain situations, rupture spire is a pretty solid land although it technically costs you 2 tapped lands the turn it hits play.... Illusory demon seems interesting if you can just play it, and sit back and win..... Evovling wilds: nice... terramorophic expanse x2!
3  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Skittles on: June 12, 2010, 03:02:44 pm
Savage twister seemed pretty weak since I cant tutor for it when I needed to.... Made some changes and ended up with this:

// Lands
    1  Vivid Creek
    1  Vivid Grove
    1  Vivid Marsh
    1  Crumbling Necropolis
    1  Arcane Sanctum
    1  Mirrodin's Core
    1  Seaside Citadel
    1  Jungle Shrine
    1  Savage Lands
    2  Swamp
    1  Mountain
    1  Plains
    2  Forest
    2  Island
    1  Mishra's Factory (1)
    1  Wasteland
    1  Gemstone Mine
    1  Pendelhaven
    1  Vitu-Ghazi, the City-Tree
    1  Treetop Village
    1  Snow-Covered Forest
    1  Snow-Covered Island
    1  Snow-Covered Swamp

// Creatures
    1 [ARB] Qasali Pridemage
    1  Selesnya Guildmage
    1  Mistmeadow Witch
    1  Mulldrifter
    1  Gravedigger
    1  Avalanche Riders
    1  Flametongue Kavu
    1  Eternal Witness
    1  Yavimaya Elder
    1  Radiant's Dragoons
    1  Drift of Phantasms
    1  Stonecloaker
    1  Etched Oracle
    1  Thunderscape Battlemage
    1  Thornscape Battlemage
    1  Shriekmaw
    1  Jund Battlemage
    1  Moroii
    1  Dreamscape Artist
    1  Golgari Guildmage
    1  Kitchen Finks
    1  Trinket Mage

// Spells
    1  Perplex
    1  Ordered Migration
    1  Haunted Crossroads
    1  Phyrexian Reclamation
    1  Spontaneous Combustion
    1  Firespout
    1  Fireball
    1  Seed Spark
    1  AEther Vial
    1  Darksteel Ingot
    1  Fellwar Stone
    1  Skullclamp
    1  Crystal Shard
    1  Aura Shards

Golgari guildmage is pretty snazzy, with some token generators in here, he can be really solid late game

4  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Skittles on: June 07, 2010, 08:00:07 pm
About lands: The tri-taps seem to work pretty well for me. I think the fact that they provide 3 colors is a huge bonus, although they dont "net" us more lands as the game goes on, but having mana of certain colors when I need it usually isnt a problem with the tri-taps.

Cards:

I did just score myself a Traumatic visions, witnessing this back late game is pretty hot, and anything that fetches land is ballin'.. Psionic blast deals with pesky creatures for a cheap color requirement, I may replace it, but like you said, I can trasmute for this one... I will probably -1 Drift of phantasms, +1 Traumatic Visions

Ordered migration vs Mistmeadow: There are just so many cards available for this format, I just dont know them all, witch is very promising in this deck combined with Dragoons(which I also intend on running) I also may run witch, I will just need to rebalance my colors.

Transmute Spells: The tutoring for witness/gravedigger/nightmare void/haunted crossroads is pretty hot. Void can be a game breaker if you play a board wiper (my playgroup runs alot of aggro builds) which is why I run, firespout, twister, combustion... Which are also good tutor targets(aside from twister which is a 2CC)

Shriekmaw was in my build for awhile, and I wanted to put it in there again, but ran anathemancer(unfair!) and spontaneous combuction instead of shriekmaw and fireball....

Has anyone tried whispers of the muse? Late game instant repeatbale card advantage!

How was Tauren Mauler for you?  I've long been a fan of that guy, and I'm glad other people are hopping on the wagon.

Amazing. Since his ability is optional he won me a game on his own "practically" due to meekstone being in play(beware opponents trying to force you to put counters on your stuff!). Even if it was mandatory , him getting huge is usually not an issue.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Dragon Stompy took 4th at Hadley 9/20/08 on: September 30, 2008, 03:37:40 pm
Completely forgot to post this here on TMD. If anyone is interested in this deck etc... etc....
(origionally posted on the source at 11 pm at night after returning from Mass)

Well Im awake enough and while the games are some what fresh in my memory and along with some sparse notes I take I can give the general idea of what happened in each game I played.

After picking up Holiday we venture forth to Mass, get there quite early. Grub up and get our lists sorted and get settled in for the tourney. Here's my list:

4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
10 Mountain
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Chrome Mox
4 Seething Song
4 Arc Slogger
4 Rakdos Pit Dragon
4 Taurean Mauler
4 Magus of the Moon
4 Gathan Raiders

1 Trinisphere

Round 1 Steve Normandin playing 3 color control(featuring wrath of god/EE/ nivenyrral's disk)
Won Die Roll
Game 1:

Turn 1 trinisphere gets countered. I drop a turn 2 Mauler. Backed by a pit dragon 2 turns later. Get in for 16 with a bent dragon. GG

Board: Out 1 slogger/3 3sphere/1 dragon. In 1 Moon 4 needle

Game 2: I get a opening hand thats modest with a raiders in it and 2 needles. I play tomb, needle on EE, then needle on polluted delta. He gets a meddling mage naming blood moon. I drop my raiders get hellbent and start swinging. He bounces my needles via echoing truth. Wrath of god clears the board. I dont get anything useful. He hardcasts decree of justice for 2 4/4 angels while I am at 4 from mishra's factory beats. I scoop.

Game 3(no change to deck): Turn 2 moon. Followed by a hard cast spirit guide that takes him from 18 to 6 on its own. He counters everything I try to play. He stp's my guide, and then stp's a bent raiders. I get a magus on board and he cleans it up

2-1
2-0-0

Round 2: Nate Bowe with U/r Painter
He wins die roll
Game 1: He goes island go. I drop turn 1 chalice at one which resolves. Followed by turn 2 mauler, then a raiders a few turns later. Unfortunately, he is able to EE my chalice and then combo when he is at 2 life

Board time!:out 3 Blood Moon and 1 arc slogger. In 4 needle

Game 2: I get turn 1 needle on grindstone. Dont have extensive notes here, but his life total gets taken down quick by a hellbent dragon who swings for 8 for the kill.

Game 3(no change): Turn 1 cotv at 1. Pit dragon does the job again nailing him for 4, then 8, then 6. GG

4-2
2-0-0

Game 3: Matt Mcnally UB Painter(just what I wanted 2 painter matches in a row )
Think He won die roll
Game 1: He goes land go. Turn 2 3sphere. Turn 3 Magus. He doesnt get back into this one. Slogger gets out and seals the deal

Board: Out: 2 Dragon, 1 song, 1 slogger, 1 mauler, 1 raiders. In: 1 moon 1 3sphere 4 needle

Game 2: Turn 1 needle on grindstone. t2 moon. he is able to EE my needle away and combos while he is at 13.

Game 3(no change): Turn 1 3sphere. Turn 2 Magus followed by a bent raiders. 3 attack phases for 7 seals it

2-1
3-0-0

Round 4: Chris B with g/b/w Rock
I win roll

Game 1: I get turn 1 mauler followed by a raiders. He doesnt get in this game. I win quickly.

Board: out 3 3sphere, 1 dragon. IN 3 pyroclasm(i knew he was running bitterblossom), 1 Moon

2-0
4-0-0

Round 5: ID
Round 6: ID

TOP 8!!!!
First Match: Joe Bernier with survival.
He wins Die roll:

Game 1. He goes fetch, crack it for forest pass. I play chrome mox pitching slogger, city. Seething song, Seething song, Pit Dragon 3 sphere pass. He takes 3 next turn from dragon, after I play a 2nd. They kill him turn 3.

Board: OUt 3 3sphere 2 slogger, 1 Mauler, 1 Raiders, 1 Dragon. In: 4 needle, 3 pyroclasm , 1 moon.

Game 2: I mull to 5. He thoughtseizes turn 1 I have Magus/Moon/Chalice in my hand. He rips magus. I drop chalice 1 on my turn. He plays land, survival, go. I drop blood moon, which screws him for green. He doesnt get a forest. I get a raiders that gets bent and wins it.

2-0
5-0-2

Top 4 against Geoff Smelski with I run Soooo many basic land landstill

This matchup was tragic. He had TONS of basics that even if I resolved a moon effect it wouldnt have mattered much. He wins 2-0 (yeah I even ancient tombed myself to death instead of dying to his attack next turn) Take that!

But Geoff was a very personable guy. It was a gruelling secong match if I hadnt drawn 4 land in a row at one point it would have maybe gone to 3 games.

Took cash value for $30
So I took 4th out of 50 players(not too shabby for my first competitive playing with this deck)...

Props: Chalice of the void and moon effects for being what they are(dont you change for nobody)
seething song for being busted
pit dragon, god I love you
mountains for being tech
off the wall games for being a chill place and having amazingly enough elbow room at their tables
me not having to face enchantress(whoot!)
trying sushi at the restaraunt across the way. good shit!

slops: basic lands (ok, well when I dont play them)
burger king(why do I eat your garbage?, sure it tastes kinda good but man, my stomach)

Hoping to take D. Stompy to some more top 8's in the future...

Im quite new to playing combo decks and recently started playing Legacy Belcher. I just want to know for rules sake what needs to be said in instances where I would cast burning wish with a lions eye diamond in play and would want to sacrifice the diamond to get the mana prior to wish resolving. If it's just as simple as casting wish and saying "in response, sac diamond" then I just want to know for sure...

Thanks

20  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: A tale of Heartache and Despair. Landstill 0-3 Drop TMLO3 on: November 05, 2007, 06:22:42 am
I can only agree, the list is mediocre at best. I mean you run 10 (!) lands (with 24 total) that don't produce colored mana in a 4-color control deck. In round 2 you lose game 3 because of manascrew that could've been avoided by playing 25 land and/or more than 14 colored manasources total.
Standstill looks like it didn't help you at all. You boarded it out in round 1 and 2 and in round 3 when you cast it your opponent gained an advantage... Any thoughts on this or was this also just bad luck?

Actually, the manabase is very very good. I did not have a problem with mana screw at all(barring the hands I had to toss back that had NO land in my second round). The mana structure is good if you know how to protect it and play it welll, I am good at that. Standtill got boarded out in the matchups I had since they were horrible in those matches. Against slogger I needed as many turn 1 possibilities to yank/counter his early threats. Against landstill, they are obviously dead.

Die Eier Von Satan - Tool (this barely fits, it's about devil's food cake, but it sounds satanic)

Actually the title is the "balls of Satan". It's a recipe for hash brownies......
22  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: A tale of Heartache and Despair. Landstill 0-3 Drop TMLO3 on: November 04, 2007, 12:41:01 pm
No offense, but I think your decklist is mediocre at best. If you can get to a point in the game where you have enough mana where Meloku will be effective, then you've probably already won that game and shouldn't need Meloku. Echoing Truth does little or nothing to provide permanent solutions or card advantage that Landstill needs. You also have no solution in main or side to Pithing Needle. Finally, you need to be playing Spell Snare. Try this to start:
-2 Echoing Truth
-1 Meloku the massive boner
-1 Stifle
-1 Pernicious Deed or Landstill
+3 Spell Snare
+2 Engineered Explosives

This will help you deal with threats earlier and make the deck operate more smoothly. Spell Snare is one of the best cards in the format at the moment.

Also, sideboarding out Fact or Fiction in any kind of mirror is totally incorrect. Fact or Fiction is much more important than Hydroblast in a mirror.

Well, echong truth is flexible enough to bounce a magus if the moon, blood moon, or pithing needles, etw tokens for only 2 mana. the replacements you suggest would not have aided me in the matches I lost. Fact is not more important against the RED mirror that burned me to death and has reb to stop my counterspells. Meloku saves my land from late game destruction such as armageddon, Im not saying she is perfect, but she would have been useful if I had the opportunity to cast it.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / A tale of Heartache and Despair. Landstill 0-3 Drop TMLO3 on: November 04, 2007, 07:32:47 am
Well, as I always say, I love magic as a game. I go into the tournaments I rarely get to play at expecting to play my best and to take losses that occur from bad luck with a grain of salt.

I get my list geared up and get some testing in for a week or so with some minor changes I made from the last tournament I played in. Here is what I ran:

BHWW Landstill:

4 Flooded Strand
4 Mishra's Factory
3 Nantuko Monastery
3 Wasteland
3 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
3 Tropical Island
1 Island

4 Standstill
4 Force of Will
4 Counterspell
4 Pernicious Deed
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Stifle
4 Brainstorm
2 Crucible of Worlds
2 Echoing Truth
1 Meloku, The Clouded Mirror
3 Fact or Fiction

The Board:
4 Hydroblast(really good decision although they only helped me in one game when I actually drew them)
4 Duress
4 Meddling Mage
3 Engineered Plague

I get to the tourney, sell some bulk cards and some other stuff like I always do so when I leave I still have more money than when I got there  Wink...... I trade with some folks and meet some nice people I didnt know and a few I do again, we bullshit and pass the time till the fun starts...

Round 1: Scott Hughes with U/r Landstill
Just lovely, the "mirror" that runs burn! Should be fun!
The best part was right before the pairings went up Scott and I talked about our decks so we both knew this match was going to be LONG!

Game 1: I lose the die roll. He leads with Faerie Conclave and passes,( its the landstill matchup so I will just breifly highlight points in these 3 games). I end up having to pop my own standstill to attempt to get deed to resolve to save me from getting beaten to death by his manlands. It ends up getting through with no problems, he attacks and attempts to stifle my deed activation when I have double force and counterspell in my hand. He loses his factories and the game procedes with him trying to burn me to death with fire/ice and lightning bolts. When I am at 3 life, he tries to bolt me, I force(go to 2), next turn he casts fire, I force(at 1). He runs out of gas and he gets beaten with monastery several times until I get another manland on the board and he scoops( I WAS AT 1 LIFE!!!!!!!)

Game 2(SB:out 4 standstill, out 2 echoing truth, out 1 fact or fiction, +4 Hyrdroblast, +3 Duress)
He elects to play(duh). He leads AGAIN with a conclave. I scoop after turn 4 of him getting crucible wastelock on my(since I boarded out my e truths I had no hope)

Game 3(no changes from last game): I am on the play. I play land pass. He leads YET AGAIN with conclave(I briefly ask if he is only running 4 Very Happy) This game goes the same as last, he ends up getting ahead and resolves crucible(damn you pyroblast!!!!) Note: I did not see any of my hydroblasts in the games where I brought them in!

Sigh, Lost round 1.....

Next!

Round 2. Jon with Empty the Slogger(wtf?)
Ok, I have heard minor things about the deck, it was not really prepared for it, but I had the chance to win, just read on...

Game 1. He steamrolls me with uncontested trinisphere, then a dragon of some kind and a sword of fire and ice. I scoop.

Game 2 (Hyrdoblast obivously come in. -4 standstill,-4 deed(his stuff is too big for this to be effective),+4 Hydroblast,+4 Duress) I am on the play, I get a hand with 3 hydroblasts in it. I keep and counter his good stuff and get a factory on the board and start wailing into him. He scoops after I keep his mana off balance with a few wastelands.

Game 3(I take out my stifles for some meddling mages)I get an opening hand that had no force and no blasts so I really need to toss that back. I end up mulling to 4 with no colored sources and hoping to topdeck a miracle. I dont, he gets off to a slow start but ends up over powering me and getting slogger with a sword of fire/ice on it.

Grumble loss round 2.... But like I say, Im having fun, not much I could do in either of these games.

Round 3. John with I have absolutely no freaking Idea black aggro whatever.
Game 1. He gets early negator which I end up stp'ing. He then puts a morph creature in play, which I later try to deed(its morph cost is discard a card, I think it's something raiders(?) a red creature with hellbent) he morphs it to deny my deed activation and proceeds to get way ahead on my. My life goes down quick....

Game 2. I drop an early standstill, he drops 2 factories and a wasteland, I cant draw anything to help me, I get beaten quickly by 2/2 lands  Sad

I drop Sad

Well, there it is..... I said in my thread for my decklist I would write a report even if I did poorly... If I was to play today (which I am not) I would run a different deck that I picked up some cards for yesterday. I will open a thread for that soon enough I believe. I still think Landstill is an amazing deck. I just ran into some tough luck a bit yesterday, I think I did the best I could with what me deck offered me off the top.

Thanks for reading! And thanks to Ray for another great tournament!
24  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: URBana Fish--The Solution to the metagame on: October 25, 2007, 11:23:53 am
Is Dimir Cutpurse really that good in this deck? Especially as a two-of in a deck with a maximum of 1 tutor, it seems awfully random to me. Maybe I should test it more, but I'd also like to hear about the experiences of those that have brought the Cutpurse to a tournament.

I've played with cutpurse in a tournament just earlier this month. It is really really good early. I lost to stax due to him strip locking me both games, along with acticating memory jar prior to that and making me lose 5 creatures in the jar hand I had to pitch. This deck has a really solid game against GAT. Bomberman is really hard in my experiences, and stax although I did get beat up on a bit, could be manageable if they dont get way ahead.

Thanks for posting the results so soon, Dan.

Also, it looks like the new sideboard tech
will soon be sideboard Dreadnought!

This was a nasty surprise for me, playing against oliver game 2 after bringing in a bunch of hate to stop him from comboing on me, he drops a dreadnaught with trickbind and I cant draw an echoing truth to get rid of it in the 2 turns I have to live  Sad.

I must say Dan, my first impression of the store is pure magnificence. Very well run event, nice people, lots of other things to do if you happen to suck out of the main event. I had a really good time, and plan to make it to more of your events if they work with my schedule.

What I learned at myriad:

1. Urbanafish has mad game against GAT. Won both matches with only 1 game loss against GAT.

2. When you play against stax, having them rip a memory jar and force you to lose 5 creatures, sucks ass. This is where I wish I ran some brainstorms(Kobefan:has this ever happened to you?). Also, strip/crucible lock both games against stax=loss.

3.Bomberman is hard for Urbanafish. I came close to gaining control a few times, but got overpowered(should have set a chalice for 1 during one game, but he would have been able to work out of that before I could have won anyhow). Aether spellbomb is such a badass card. Dreadnaught is a beast out of the board, nice tech Ollie!

Ok, just so I know for sure, here are a few questions I need resolved:

My opponent has a Phyrexian negator, he declares the attack. I declare a block with my 4/4 Jotun Grunt. He says "before damage, smother your grunt" I say ok, grunt goes bye bye, do I take 5 from the negator? Or only 1 trample since I did declare the block prior to the smother.

question 2:

I have a face down fathom seer, I attack for with the 2/2. My opponent block with a 2/2 creature of his own. With damage on the stack, if I flip seer, would his creature die and mine live? since seer would be 1/3?

Awesome Ray! And I can make this one for sure!

The last TML was a good time, cant complain about how it went, hopefully word will spread out and we will have more players this time. How many were at the last one? Decklists were never posted on SCG.
