1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: What deck would you play??? on: October 05, 2010, 10:51:53 pm
That was sort of my train of thought.  There are so many schools of thought on the subject, and I was wondering if there was any type of consensus.

If you're looking for a consensus amongst Magic players about any subject, it's either a general opinion based on many people reading the same experts' articles (which is biased because they don't have much experience on the subject) or just a group liking the same decks/strategies/feeling when they play. Best deck/card choice/playstyle is never set in stone. Your personal experience will always matter most because when you play, you know what works best and not. It's not statistics or theories anymore. It shows you how things work.

Considering my deck choice, I would go with any blue-centric control deck (probably Trygon Tezz). I feel most secure when I have more chance to be the one with the ''last word'' on any spell resolving, as in the control player. It makes me calmer and more focused, and I sure know I make lots of mistakes during a game.
2  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Mox Opal on: October 05, 2010, 10:28:32 pm
This card can't be compared to any Mox in terms of power. Of course, it does something really similar the same way (netting one extra mana and possibly one extra storm off a 0-mana artifact), but because of this resemblance, it is easy to only see it as a bad mox, since it will never be as ''playable everywhere'' as the other moxen. This characteristic is also shared by 95% of the cards in the environment, so it makes this kind of argument futile.

Considering its playability, we have to look at the card with its proper strengths and weaknesses, like any card involved in a particular strategy.
-It accelerates mana
-It boosts the storm count
-It's an artifact (hello, Academy)

-You need 2 other artifacts (not necessarily moxen like many seem to think).
-It's legendary.

Since it's a new card, the important thing is to not start comparing it with existing cards in existing strategies, because this kind of way of thinking doesn't lead to innovation and is often proven wrong.

Bomberman is a deck that a lot of people don't seem to understand. Yes, its combo is great, but by no way can the combo be pulled off consistently and fast often enough. Looking at the cc of the cards and the amount of tutors makes it pretty evident. The deck is really more controllish than anything else. 8-12 counters, a lot of draw and the Trinket Mage toolbox is stuffed with versatile metagame answers. People can look at it like a Gifts deck with an aggro splash of utility creatures instead of the colossus. There have been A LOT of versions of the deck over the last 2 years. The original with StP, Disenchants and Pyrite bomb, a version with Vial/Standstill and Voidmage Prodigies, a comboish W/U/B version, a version with Dark Confidant, some with/out Thirsts, Meddling Mages, full moxen, etc etc etc. This is for those who don't know the deck, even if Chiz made a very good explanation of the basic principles of Bomberman. I really don't know why people don't talk about it or play it in tournaments more (people should look at Quebec/Ontario tournaments as much as Europe's for deck ideas, even if the metagames are different.)

Oh, and congratulations to everyone who made top 8 at both tournaments! Winning games and power is sure great.

Congratulations for your win! You have made some good innovation in vintage not only by creating a deck, but mostly by metagaming it well.

Oh, and one question: Have you ever tried crop rotation? As I think of it, it could really help put a strip, ring or bazaar into play and its ''disadvantage'' is somewhat nullified by loam.

Shaman is an all-around goodie. I think you should maindeck R&R only if you're a Stax/CS heavy meta. In my opinion, 1 shaman is fine, 2 if you see some combos, and 2 R&R in the case above.
