RT,
I don't post here much, but I have had the pleasure to talk to you via AIM on more than one occasion. Everything JD said was absolutely correct - you are a deep person with quite the interesting look at all aspects of life, not to mention Magic itself.
Good luck sir, and I do hope to speak to you again.

@ Matt
Sort of in the vein of Disciple of the Vault, it makes the opponent pay attention to the gamestate. But, thats also easily changed to remove the may.
@Asi
Interesting idea..I was trying to shoot for a psuedo-combat trick of sorts though.

Fires of Chancery 2RR Instant
Fires of Chancery may only be played on a creature you do not control.
Remove target creature from game until end of turn. When that creature is returned to play, it's owner may have the creature deal damage to a creature or player of their choice equal to it's power.
Off-color, but with an interesting and relevant drawback. I am a fan of this design hole (see the Punisher cycle from Judgement for an example) and as such I believe this could be great.
Also, creates very fun politics in multiplayer.

I find this interesting, because when this idea struck me, I immediately thought of the Paladins and completely forgot about Hand of Justice.
I also was watching Schindler's List - lawl.
This guy doesn't want to go into combat unless its absolutely necessary - he's a leader that sits behind his flanks and smokes cigars while his dorks go and die for him.
I know this guy can be quite mediocre, as previously stated, but I didn't want to wreck faces that badly. And from what the discussion is, it seems as though...it's good to go?

If I remember correctly, The "L" trains are off from 1-5am...I've had quite the debacles downtown from forgetting that little nugget.
Our cabbies are just like everyone elses - They don't speak english, and you want to get in and out ASAP.
Though I must say, they aren't 1/4 as nuts as NY's. But they're a class in their own.

Im not too keen on the idea of a counter...how about..
T, Tap an untapped nontoken creature you control: Destroy target creature of the chosen color
This could balance it out, and I say nontoken because leading an attack in war requires a cost of actual men, not sending your dog out or anything. Or a robot.
Maybe make him legendary as well, as he is the "leader" ?

It's been a long time since I've appeared anywhere on this forum (school and work does that to you) but here I am, I had this idea...purely from flavor. I hate white; I hate white weenie, I hate endless amounts of global creature destruction, but I digress.
White can exercise evil as fascism, as I remember someone saying. Wish I could remember the quote...
Without further ado:
Imperial Commander (name is random, as I said I suck at them)
2WW When Imperial Commander comes into play, name a color. T: Destroy target creature of the named color. (Templating sounds a tad off...) 2/2
This may be on par with Royal Assassin, but I didn't want to create a psuedo-mirrored creature.
It's racist against everyone and it isn't shy about it. What do you think?

Ahh, im working on a list for Quickened Bubbling Tide. It'll hit this forum in a couple days (for its hard to make this powered, for obvious reasons such as moxen weaken tides)
It looks pretty nuts, and I think it could wreck unpowered metas.

He did, and Friggorid is a monster, but this "article" (or excrement?) just cuts my respect for him badly. It MAY be a joke, I'm still not precisely sure, but dude...if its hard to tell that this is a joke, then there must be a problem. Oh, and JDizzle, 60 pages of "don't play against swamps" is the most groundbreaking relevation ever in this fabulous game. Â Â It even outdoes the concept of 60-card decks..I mean come on, who wants to seriously have the best chance of topdecking a gamewinning spell like the restricted Grip of Chaos? Next up, Rizzo announces that Rush of Knowledge is the greatest draw spell Wizards could ever print.

I understand that he is being a freaking idiot...I even get that that is what he writes for, to be an idiot...
what I dont get is that it gets published and that there ARE people out there listening to him...It suprises me even more that SCG would run with something that is so obviously low in overall quality. If its a cute joke then it is just really below par in the humor category, if its supposed to be a sarcastic view at what is actually supposed to be a good deck for the format, then I think he fails there as well since its really a terrible build...a good idea...bad execution.
QFT Is Star City trying to waste everyones time? I mean seriously, I havent posted in 2-3 weeks because of this thing called college, and I see a StarCity article not written by Smmenen and Im like...hmmm...so I read it and feel like Ive regressed 3 years in magic. Oh yea, Ive only played 3 years. Rizzo, STFU. Please. Stick to what you know, and if your going to venture into Vintage, do it seriously. We take this format seriously. Granted, reminiscing on old times is fun. But that article is fucking pointless.

Yep, I was feeling really, really good about bring Belcher, but the fact it was my 2nd Vintage tournament ever really, really showed. Oh well, its how you learn. And so did the fact I've only been playing since Legions. But you know what? Im not quitting. I did infinitely better in my games than i did at SCG: Chicago, so I will be truly competitive soon. I played Ubastax (got rocked by turn 1 and 2 trinispheres, with no welder in sight), I played the mirror (lost die roll, 3 turn 1 wins...obviously him, me, him) won a fish matchup, and lost to TPS in 3 by me comboing turn 2, him comboing turn 2, and me setting up to win w/ Necro but him killing me only needing a storm of 5. So I dont think my play skill was all that shitty. I just got beat.

This card...wtf? It seems like, ironically w/ Chalice, it was made for Vintage.
Is it in the name?
But onto the actual card, this seems like it could fuck some shit up. Problem being, if you want to really utilize it you need to run 4, and its a TERRIBLE topdeck oh lets see...anytime!
At least Chalice you have an ability to possibly use it after turn one...
Good idea, bad execution.

MMM, mono black tendrils...I like it. Glaring hole #1 - wheres the Necropotence? Duress is good. Cabal Therapy is very unnecessary. Unmask is good because it's free . I would... -1 Death Wish +1 Necropotence Ancient Craving/Ambition's Cost, maybe? Also, you want the 4th Night's Whisper. It's too good for only 3. I'm not liking the Kobolds, sadly...I know they provide mass mana w/ Culling the Weak...but it seems just too situational. -4 Crookshank, +4 land grant -4 Crimson, +1 fastbond +1 crop rotation ...2 more slots....hmm... +1 Night Whisper +1 Swamp and of course -4 Swamp +4 Bayou ...It's reckless already, but now it could be dangerous.  EDIT: CULLING THE WEAK! haha forgot about it. +4 Ambitions Cost

Reset is crap. Ive played it for 6 months in Legacy, and its terrible there.
I played it for 2 weeks in Vintage and its even worse. Sorcery speed absolute stupidity (Spiral, Will, Demonic, Ideas, Halls, MoM)
Creates more consistency and brokenness. It makes Reset an inferior Twiddle/Grip (as aforementioned)
Reset...BLAH!
One of the few decks thats just better Sorcery than Instant...the cards just win more consistently.

Gush/Frantic Search are amazing... and if fastbond ever resolves the game ends.
QFT Fastbond IS this deck in Vintage...Ideas Unbound also wins the game for you. I'm also of the company that believes this deck runs perfectly fine with Twiddle/Dreams Grip in place of Reset. Oh, DREAM HALLS. This is the deck Dream Halls was made for. I run High Tide in my scrub no-proxy meta and walk all over people. It turns into "search for Dream Halls, Resolve Dream Halls, GG" or Win off fastbond or Just win from too much gas This deck is solid. If it can keep up w/ Belcher/Grim Long it is arguably just as good.

Yes. Game 1 to see what they are playing, and to pluck a bomb. Game 2 to pluck a bomb. Game 3 to pluck a bomb.
Especially in today's metagame, where the fastest non-lock control decks win stupidly fast (Gifts, Oath)
Against a deck like Stax or UbaStax (basically anything without Forces) I play them IMMEDIATELY and make them rely on Welder.
Though Im not a fan of Duress against Stax (any version) anyway.

In Oath, it is defensive. You play it in hopes of not wasting a FoW when trying to force through your Oath.
In combo, Duress is offensive. You play it turn 1 to see whats coming, then maybe play another when you go to win if you fear the Force.
A basic generalization, the faster your deck is the more offensive Duress becomes.

Is B 2life card disadvantage better than 1BB 1 life card advantage? you BET. Plus if it gets scary, you can kill it w/ keg. Keg doesn't kill Enchantments actually. Excuse me, I just got owned. But in all seriousness, I think if you dont win with Arena's advantage before it kills you, then you shouldn't have won the game anyway. And Arena will win you games you don't deserve to win.

I'm a specialist. I know you might be saying "who the hell is this kid" but hey, haha
I play combo, and combo more or less exclusively. Why? because I find it a blast to sit down in front of a guy w/ Drains and Forces and say "Im Dangerous"
Then I beat him through his hate and say "Im entirely Reckless"
You have to find a balance between stupidity and geniusness to play combo. Walking that line is the most exciting thing i have found in this wonderful game. It fits me as a person, because as a history major with a minor in law, I've seen some things in the past that have done the same.
Why be boring?

No Morphling. Way too mana-intensive for this deck's needs.
Phids are just fine for a win condition, or even Keiga.
Let me explain Keiga. Kills in 4 turns, has repercussions for death, and doesn't suck mana every turn.
...But his biggest knock is that he can be targeted. If there is a lot of targeted removal in your meta, but lots of creatures, use him. If no creatures, don't.

I hate sinkhole in this deck. Always have; One of my friends plays MBC and uses 4 sinks, and they always seem win-more.Â
A early-game Sinkhole doesn't really do much if it is not followed IMMEDIATELY by a Void. A late-game Sinkhole can be nuts, cutting off a splash color. But late-game it is a BB stripmine, when you could be just winning with your Shade.
I agree, Vamp Tutor sucks. Id run Confidant all day over that card in this deck, or if the lifeloss scares you, Top.
Or (call me crazy) but Phyrexian Arena is SICK in here in place of V. Tutor.
Is B 2life card disadvantage better than 1BB 1 life permadent card advantage? No way. Plus if it gets scary, you can kill it w/ keg.

I like this deck, and I like it even more now that Duress has been moved to the side.
Confidant is the nuts; just completely, completely fucking nuts. I have to ask though about a couple cards.
LoA? This deck seems as though it only has 7 cards on the first 2 turns. Is this worth running a non-U/B source?
And speaking of which, the Swamp greatly adds to the lessened destruction by Wasteland.
2 Rebuilds AND a Hurkyl's? This seems a tad overkill. Maybe replace
-1 Rebuild +1 Tinker
To help you go get that Memory Jar?
I do realize this is TPS w/ Drain and Confidant. But my concern is, there is too much control and too little gas for when you want to win. This is the reason I think Colossus is still good MD. This looks as though it would fizzle way too much for a tournament setting. But I will test this; I always have liked the idea of Drain in Storm.
Manabase is very solid, except for the questionable LoA. But that will be a testing focal-point.
Good job at the tourney, BTW.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Query: Do you think there is a lack of consensus about Basic Propositions In
|
on: November 23, 2005, 10:42:15 am
|
Is there a disensus on basic propositions in this format right now?
The dissensus is much stronger than the consensus. And my version of "why" goes back to multiple things already mentioned. The superiority comment, the need to show off, the feeling of inferiority if you are not innovative, etc. With a metagame as arguably diverse as this currently is (with all 3 basics of combo, aggro, and control doing well, along with mixes of aggro-control, control-combo, even FCG's aggro-combo) it opens the door for new theories, new ideas, and most importantly new secrets. A tad offtopic, I refuse to post in SCG because that place is a fucking brothel of loud obnoxious assholes. But I digress. Leading off this diversity, this is also the first step to dissension (no pun intended). Look at America today, its the same basic principles. To put it simply: The more diverse an environment becomes, the less cohesive it's ideas become.
