1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Is Your Current Vintage Deck Proxy Free? on: January 13, 2016, 09:37:38 pm
I have been playing with the Serious guys in Ohio for a little while. I have power except for an Emerald. I am actively trying to complete my power. I only want to play with the real cards because that is what you are supposed to do with cards; play them.

I think one unfortunate part about the tourney change is that it comes after the restriction of COTV. Budget decks back in the early 2000s meant, me included, could play U/R Fish with 4 Cotvs and null rods without needing all the power. Not the case anymore.

I have been slowly acquiring power over the years and am almost complete.

Does this tourney change mean that we will have to sideboard with more dredge hate?

Nat, wonderful job again planning this. Can't wait for the next one. Need to get a few more of these in before eternal weekend.

My list was:

Merfolk

4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Master of the Pearl Trident
4 Cursecatcher
4 Silvergill Adept
4 True-Name Nemesis
3 Phantasmal Image

4 Force of Will
3 Mental Misstep
1 Flusterstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Misdirection

4 Chalice of the Void
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Black Lotus

11 Island
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
4 Cavern of Souls

Sideboard
4 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Mindbreak Trap
1 Blue Elemental Blast
1 Pithing Needle
1 Null Rod
1 Steel Sabotage
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Flusterstorm
1 Echoing Truth
3 Dismember

Sideboard comments: didn't use blue blast.  I was expecting young pyromancers.
Mindbreak trap was great; It is meant for abrupt decay and exiling Boseiju'd Show and Tells. I hard cast it on a Time Vault to exile a win condition. Pithing Needle is great as long as COTV is not set to 1. I may move to Ravenous traps or more Tormods Crypt to help fight delving with cruise/dig and cards in graveyards needed for Doomsday piles.

Greg - I can't say it was fun playing against you in the top 4, cause I lost, but it was good nonetheless.

For game 1, my notes have me copying your Phyrexian Revoker with Phantasmal Image and I named Kuldotha Forgemaster. All that did was delay the inevitable. Your threats are >> than lords.

For game 2, the critical thing that happened was forced because of the turn 0 leyline of the void from you. I had sapphire and island in my opening 6 after a mulligan, but I had my side boarded echoing truth in my opening hand. I had no counter spells but 2 lords. I could either play lord go and hope for no spheres followed by a turn 2 lord or play echoing truth on the leyline. I choose the echoing truth in the case you had a perfect helm/ void opening. I don't know if you did, but my deck did not cooperate with giving me lands and I lost from there pretty handedly.

The tourney was fun. The meta was blue and oath heavy. Only 1 Shops and 0 dredge from my memory.  I anticipated this from my last trip to Columbus and that was the reason I chose Merfolk. Chalice of the void on 0 on the play won me 2 games. Thanks to Nat for setting this up.

I would be interested. Not that this matters for everyone, but with this being part of a larger event would this be sanctioned?

I see that you might be switching from a U/W build to a U/R build. Do you have a sample deck list? What red cards provide a better answer to oath decks that white does not have for the board or main deck?  Thanks.

Hello everyone. I had a great time last weekend playing at Kidforce. Hopefully we can get more people to play on a consistent basis. I played a standard Merfolk list with a sideboard expecting MUD and Oath decks. I didn't see any Oath or at least I didn't play against any. Here is my decklist:

Lands
9 Islands
4 Cavern of souls
1 Strip mine
4 Wasteland

Spells
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
3 Null Rod
4 Cursecatcher
8 lords
4 Silvergill Adept
2 Merrow Reejerey
3 Phantasmal Image
2 True Name Nemesis
1 Waterfront Bouncer
4 Force of Will
2 Daze
3 Mental misstep
1 Steel Sabotage
1 Flusterstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk

Sideboard
4 Graffdigger's Cage
3 Steel Sabotage
2 Swan Song
1 Misdirection
1 Tormod's Crypt
3 Dismember
1 Ghost Quarter

For next time I would add one TNN and cut a Reejerey. I used Ghost Quarter a couple of times but I might make that a Jitte in the sideboard. Thanks everyone
