1  Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Re: Oxford UK's 2nd Vintage Tournament 4xFOW 1st Prize on: April 08, 2007, 05:33:14 am
One week left to prepare to compete against UK's finest!

-Actually GenCon UK info is still in the works.  Its going to be Aug30-2Sep, but they haven't announced which day the vintage event would be on.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TO's Playing in their Tournaments on: April 07, 2007, 10:32:01 am
"I am not sure I find anything wrong with the TOs actions in these two paragraphs. What point are you making exactly?" -Diceman

Maybe it had nothing to do with any specific actions - perhaps his attitude drove people away.

I believe I can empathize with Dave, event though I don't completely agree.  I believe his stance is about people who taint magic - driving people away, and it just happened to be a this particular TO.  Others who weren't even at these events may have been affected by the negative emotions brought home with those who went.  I had 2 people ruin casual magic in my area... 20 people quickly dwindled to 0, except by invite at someones house.

Specifically, regarding Beckers event...  Good news!  You won't have to play Feinstein in the Top8.  And don't forget to bring extra cash because I'm sure it will be like a big going away with an afterparty.
3  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Blue/Black "I Will Deck You" Deck by Sir Smudge on: April 05, 2007, 01:02:00 am
I'm late for work and only have enough time to say that Yawgmoth's Will is so broken decks are build around it as a singleton.  It is restricted.  Have a read here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=magic/rules/tourneyplayer for a list banned/restricted cards for the Vintage format.
4  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Ruling Confirmation requested Triggers, Dovescape vs. Chalice of the Void on: March 28, 2007, 04:49:18 am
A UW fish player has leaked that that may be bringing Dovescape to a vintage event.

If i have chalice in play for 2, and dovescape is in play on my opponents side of the table.

Here is how I believe it plays out.

He plays a jotun grunt. an echoing truth.

APNAP trigger his dovescape, then triggers chalice.

Chalice would counter the spell.  Dovescape's counter trigger would fizzle.

Dovescape: Whenever a player plays a noncreature spell, counter that spell. That player puts X 1/1 white and blue Bird creature tokens with flying into play, where X is the spell's converted mana cost.

Being countered doesn't appear to be requirement for the creatures.  I believe it use Last Known Information and give him the creatures anyway.

Edit: fixed non-creature part of question.  Sorry it was late.

Honestly I don't know, but I picked up TMD/OfficeShredder from his university last time.  I'm driving around 200 miles from North-West of London.  A few extra miles to help out a fellow vintage player shouldn't be a problem.

7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Which way do you tap? on: March 17, 2007, 07:09:26 am
{Tap} 90 degrees to the right as depicted.  I'm OCD to the point that if my opponent doesn't tap 90 degrees, I ask if i can fix their cards.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Weird People on: March 17, 2007, 07:05:12 am
I once played against a male opponent with extreme acne and with hair midway down his back.  Sure some people have acne, but this guy looked like he had used a shovel on himself before the match.  His hair was 1 solid dread, looked like a broom, excluding the dirt and tangles.  I spent most of the match inconspicuously looking for bugs in his hair.

For the record, he has since obtained acne treatment, and had his hair fixed.
9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / [Report] Top 4 (of 11) Stax at Oxford, UK on: February 28, 2007, 09:56:33 pm
Normally I would be scared to post about an 11 person tournament on TMD, but being that I was preceded by OfficeShredder, and that this is only the 3nd Vintage event I’ve even heard of in the UK since early 04, I figured it would be ok to tell my story.

So, here I am in the UK – the only area more devoid of Vintage magic is ANTARTICA!  I was going into an unknown metagame, and haven't had the time to create/playtest much on my own.  I stayed up till 2am trying to analyse the differences between Brassman’s last 3 lists vs. Meandeck Gifts and trying to decide on the exact gifts build I want to take, or if I wanted to try out Steve Menendian’s Grim Long list from Monday’s article, or heck why not take Ichorid?

Finally I decided that more than likely everyone there would also be net decking and I should play something that they haven’t had any experience against.  STAX!!!  Still not totally sure what I'm going to be playing, I sleeve up one of Vroman’s lists from his 10Dec report : http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=31336

I didn’t finalize my deck decision until I arrived.  When I saw a combo mirror, kobolds, and a guy to my right sleeving up Grim Long, I knew STAX was the way to go.  My main concern was fast combo, hurkles/rebuild, and ETW, so I changed out 6 SB slots, Thought prision - unavailable was replaced with REBs, and 3 slice and dice in place of 3 shards.  I’ve never gotten Ubazaar online so I moved UBA mask back to the box and put 3 Sphere of Resistance in their place to end up with:

MD:
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Mishra’s Workshop
4 Mishra’s Factory
4 Barbarian Ring
3 Wasteland
2 Mountain
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
9 SoloMoxenCryptLotusVault
4 Goblin Welder
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Tangle Wire
4 Crucible of Worlds
3 Smokestacks
3 Sphere of Resistance
3 Null Rod
2 Duplicant
1 Trinisphere
SB:
1 Granite Shard //don’t ask
3 Viashino Heretic
3 Tormod’s Crypt
3 Red Elemental Blast
3 Slice and Dice
2 Duplicant

I brought my camera and took a lot of pictures, but should’ve brought paper instead.

Match 1 vs. Grim Long (14 proxies, no SB)

Game 1: I lose the die roll, and my opponent plays Underground Sea and passes the turn.

I played out a Mox Ruby, Black Lotus, Barbarian Ring, then dropped a Sphere of Resistance.  My opponent responded with mystical for Ancestral.  I was holding null rod, and considered breaking my lotus, to play it, but decided against.

My opponent taps Underground for a mox, taps for a mox, and another and, finally a LED.
I played a wasteland, taking out his underground sea, and then played null rod with the lotus.

He plays another underground sea, pass.

I play workshop, Crucible.

He plays City and Brainstorms.

I remember making a mistake rushing to play a Factory before recalling that I had a wasteland in my graveyard.

He uses imperial seal to find a Tolarian Academy.

I bazaar into academy and play it from my graveyard.  He concedes and flips over his academy - complaining loudly.

Game 2.

I have a nice hand… or so I thought.  I’ll keep.  My opponent plays a load of spells and get the storm count to 13 or so, but fails to find Tendrils.  He plays Jar, and necro, then takes 2 mana burn, and uses necro for 5.

I play Workshop, Crypt, Sphere of Resistance, then Chalice for 1.

On his turn he breaks jar, then tries to go off again.  With plenty of storm, a misplay brought his demise when he used one of his only 2 available Black mana to cast dark ritual into my Chalice!  Afterward, he discards his jar hand, including a tendrils, and then refills his hand and Necro's to 1 life, discarding duress and brainstorms and other chaff.

I topdecked an Academy played crucible, then my academy to destroy his, he concedes at one life with a necro and mana crypt in play.

Afterward I discover that my opponent wasn’t playing any hurkles MD, had no sideboard, and his only bounce was chain of vapor.

Record: 1-0

Match 2 vs. Grim Long

Game 1.  Lost the die roll.

I go second, with a mox, academy, turn 1 Sphere or Resistance, turn 2 workshop-crucible, null rod.  Next out comes barbarian ring then tanglewire.  The game kept going my way as I recurred my tanglewire and continued to swing with welder.

Game 2.

He leads off with gemstone mine, duress.  Taking my would-be first turn sphere of resistance.  I play a tormod’s crypt bazaar and pass.  My opponent gets lands a necropotence off a cabal ritual.  I get one spirit token.  He draws 6 cards, and I (stupidly) bazaar EOT.  I discard factory, tangle wire, then am stuck with 5 cards I wanted to keep.  Tanglewire, Workshop, Welder, REB, and Barbarian Ring.  I end up discarding the REB, because he only took 6 with Necro, I didn’t really expect him to win in one turn with my crypt on the table.  I drew a mox pearl, then played the welder.  Passed the turn, he did something, but I don’t recall, except the fact that I had got another spirit token, then he drew several more cards and passed.  I played shop, tanglewire, welded in the sphere of resistance for my mox pearl.  He cast EOT hurkyl’s recall, then proceded to draw down to 4 life.  He didn’t win that turn, and gave me a 3rd spirit token.  I untap and swing for the win.

Record: 2-0

Match 3, I get paired down against a pitch long player who lost to U/W Fish.

Game 1:  I win by a landslide.

Game 2:

He is locked down tightly, and I had just welded out trinisphere for a fresh tanglewire, with 2 sphere of resistance and null rod on the table.  I pass, EOT, He taps 2, then removes 3 ESG’s!!! for a rebuild.  I lose horribly the next turn.  I should’ve conceded instead of letting him play it out.  I would've won the 3rd game, instead we went to time after 5 turns with the board completely locked.

I don’t recall exactly how I boarded against combo.  Usually it was -2 Duplicant +3 REB’s or -2 Duplicant and -3 Stax for 3 REBs and 3 Crypts.  My SB didn’t positively affect any of my games except against Fish.

Record: 2-0-1

Before the 4th match we look at the standings.  U/W Fish at 9 points, myself at 7, several 6’s and down.

Match 4: vs. Richard, playing Feinstein’s U/W Fish.  We had the TO enter an ID, then we played for fun.

Game 1:  I died horribly after keeping a hand with 3 mishra’s factories.  I got crucible out and was re-playing factories, until Jotun Grunt came to town.

Game 2:  In came 8 cards from the board.  Viashino Heretic’s, REB’s, and Duplicants.  -3 Sphere of Resistance, -3 Null Rod, -2 Ukn

I played Lotus, welder – resolved, 2nd welder 1burn.  I then played workshop/Crucible.  He played a kataki.  I remove crucible, for lotus, then play Duplicant targeting Kataki, stifled.  He plays a Jotun Grunt.  On my next turn I weld out duplicant for lotus, sac lotus + workshop for another duplicant targeting Jotun Grunt.  He swords his own Grunt.  I weld out my mox for the duplicant in my Graveyard, taking his Kataki.  He scoops after his next draw.  Said he could handle one welder, but not two.

No time for a 3rd game.

Record: 2-0-2

Cut to top 4.

I lost horribly 0-2 to my round 2 opponent, who was playing a list identical to Steve's from last Monday's Starcitygames article.

Being that 3rd/4th place was either a Yawg Will or an Academy, I let my opponent choose, then drafted Masques block.  We re-drafted the rares and all I got for my investment of time was a single Thrashing Wumpus.

In the finals, U/W Fish vs. Grim Long:

Grim long tried for a turn 1 win, but ran into a wall of counters, then Grim won on turn 2.
Game 2, Grim tinkered (Fish player let it resolve, thinking it was going for Jar, and Fish was holding Stifle) for collossus FTW.

Overall The field consisted of:

3x Grim Tutor based Tendrils Combo
1x Oath of Druids
1x Kobold Storm Combo
1x Psychatog
1x Welder based deck
1x U/W Fish
1x Stax
2x Charbelcher

Slops:
Having to drive 2.5 hours for a best case scenario of winning 4 sinkholes.
Not having the sense to mulligan aggressively in the finals.

Props:
Thanks to Crispin for hosting the event, who despite having a low turnout, is going to host another event on 15April (with better prizes).

And to end this report I share with you the absolute funniest thing I heard that day.  “OMG You just demonic tutored for a Kobold!”  That was coming from someone who was getting beat by an interesting flavor of Kobold/Clamp.

A thread on the event at an Oxford site can be found here: http://ukvintage.informe.com/oxford-ground-zero-dt12.html

11  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Question about bouncing Tanglewire and Last Known Information on: February 18, 2007, 03:52:29 pm
Stax player has Sphere of Resistance in play, and Tanglewire w/3 counters.

In my upkeep, I tap 3 of 5 permanents to cast hurkles recall.  All artifacts are returned to opponents hand.  Tanglewire's ability is on the stack, but since it isn't in play ~ has 0 counters do i still have to tap 3, because that is how many counters it had when it went on the stack?  Or does it check upon resolution and see no tanglewire / counters?

-Edit: Yes i've read the Jotun Grunt vs. Smokestack, but this is slightly different.

Thanks.
12  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Have the Stax rules changed recently? on: February 18, 2007, 03:46:21 pm
Thanks for this post, I had believed the judge was correct, that you could stack all triggers anyway you please.  In the past i've allowed opponents to tap to tanglewire, then sac to smokestack.

This guy has low feedback, is a new member, and all of his feedback is from items purchased that cost 1 Cent with free shipping!  What a joke!  This is obviously fraud in the works -- how do you go about reporting fraud or false listings?

Initially I read throught your list and didn't see the moxes and noticed you weren't playing shops.  I was quite baffled.  Congrats on the win!  You mentioned 5 rounds, and Tier 1 decks, but you never mentioned how many people were at the event, nor any other specifiics about the other decks except for fish/oath.  What were some of your other matchups?

Where is Tolarian Academy?

Have you tested shattering spree or repeal in place of the overloads?  It might help if they got a chalice for 1 down on you cutting off 25 cards of your maindeck.

You mentioned problems with oath, have you considered chain of vapor?

Have you considered pithing needle to stop gorilla shaman defensively, or bazaar etc to disrupt opponent?
-or Darkblast as AJ suggests

gotinput

Edit: Removed commentary already covered by AJ.

NewYork - APO/AE = Air Post Office /Armed Forces Europe  The military picks up out mail from there and delivers it.  So more than likely he's stationed at a base in Italy.
17  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Recycled Tendrils on: July 17, 2006, 02:39:10 pm
Forgive me but, I don't see it ever being competitive.  You lose to all current combo decks played.

Resolving any of your 5+cc enchantments is going to be next to impossible without disruption, when playing in a balanced meta.  More than likely your will have to get past at least two counters by the time you have enough mana to cast them.

So the deck loses to combo, drains, extract, stifle, blood moon, and most other good decks.

Consensus says Yawg’s Win is good… and Don’t remove Yawg's Bargain and Vampiric Tutor.

Will isn't the problem, recycle is.

I don’t believe I can help this deck, because I’m stuck thinking it would be better to start with with… an updated version of RectorTrix

Starting with… http://sales.starcitygames.com/deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=11574

-Mox Diamond/Chrome Mox/Lotus Petal

+3 Perilous Research

-1 Polluted Delta
+2 Flooded Strand
-1 Underground Sea
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Single Card Discussion] Perilous Research on: July 17, 2006, 01:46:08 pm
Research is a bad Magic card that won't see Type One play.

C'mon Rich you should hype up the card as it would be great for your opponents to play when your playing slaver!

I hate dredging up the dead, but it would also be another way to sac an Academy Rector.

Edit: Removed erraneous statement.
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Power Level Errata: They're removing it! on: July 10, 2006, 03:22:43 am
Now we only hope that Wizards will stick to the saying (T1 can handle it) before going on a banning spree.

Will Tog make a comeback with the restoration of Zodiac Dragon?!?

I think ZD would likely be banned in legacy due to the insane brokenness w/survival.

1:15pm GMT Oracle wordings not yet updated...  Coldsnap cards are there... WOTC I'm waiting!
20  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Mega Mana on: June 22, 2006, 12:26:21 pm
Not that many people play it, but you did mention your meta was highly aggro... can this deck even race Food Chain Goblins?
21  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Two questions about control slaver on: June 19, 2006, 03:50:48 pm
Isochron Scepter is a bad idea for several reasons more than likely stated somewhere else on this forum.

1.  Isochron Scepter is too slow for vintage.
2.  I'll agree with the previous posts that null rod does it in.
3.  Notice how many list run rebuilt, hurkyls, chain of vapor or other bounce...  you don't get the imprinted spell back!
4.  Even if you imprint mana drain on it you still need 2 mana open to activate, there are much better things to do with 4 mana.

If you get lucky enough to get two uses out of the imprinted spell it still probably hasn't really done you that much good and could be replaced with a more effective spell.

Also what is "1 Redirect" really supposed to be?
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: my deck on: June 14, 2006, 02:10:10 pm
It's hard for me to reply to this because it all depends on what you want to do, and what your metagame is like.

If you insist on playing discard in t1 you must first understand that it won't win you any power in a healthy metagame.

If you want to play it as a more flexible casual deck then what I would recommend would be quite different.

#1  No matter what type of environment you are in I must concur with NetherSpirit Fetchlands are a must, along with brainstorm which has excellent synergy with the lands.

#2  Invest in a set of Dark Confidants...even if they don't make main deck you'll probably need them.

#3  A popular win cond for black is tendrills of agony...

I had some ideas on the next step I would take it to, but this is your deck evolution.  Enjoy!

When looking to make this more competitive, see TT Confidant, Gifts Ungiven Control, Intuition Tendrils.

general comments below

4 duress - "The 3rd best counterspell!"
4 hymn - not played in most competetive decks  Lets try brainstorm here.
4 dark ritual - mandatory for most decks running black!!!
4 hypnotic specter - not played in most competetive decks
3 crucible of worlds - no synergy with the rest of the deck (strip effects and rushing river aside)
2 thirst for knowledge - jury is still out...
1 nether void - not played in most competetive decks (used in decks focused on abusing it ie. uncounterable creatures)
1 windfall - not played in most competetive decks (tinker for memory jar might be better?)
1 Fact or Fiction
1 ancestral recall
1 time walk
1 mystical tutor
1 yawgmoth's will
1 demonic tutor
1 imperial seal
1 vampiric tutor
1 mind twist - not played in most competetive decks
1 rushing river - only 1 piece of bounce... Chalice for 3 and you lose the game!
1 tinker
1 darksteel colossus
1 damping matrix - although more narrow, pithing needle is more efficient.

5 moxen
1 lotus
1 sol ring

What margin of gain or loss would Mana Crypt/Vault, or Lotus Petal or LED do for you?

4 Underground River - 2nd NetherSpirit's comments again, but break it up into polluted delta/flooded strand
Fetches are arguably the most important lands.

The rest depends on your final Main Deck

4 underground seas
4 wasteland
2 swamps
1 island
1 strip mine

sideboard:
3 hydroblasts - too narrow for this deck
3 defense grid - maybe
2 the rack - too slow
2 phrexian negators
2 damping matrix - expensive catch all that doesn't shut down your opponents mana (the main purpose of null rod)
2 ensnaring bridge - if you lay a bridge, and they cannot attack then you are just going to fly over for 2 each turn?
1 thirst for knowledge - not in the sideboard...  the SB is not to fix your deck, but to help out different matchups.

Unfortunately due to low turnout www.theplaceforgames.com isn't offering the T1 tourneys anymore.  There were nine players at the first event, The next two didn't make.  The UK obsession with Vintage can not be better shown than by the amazing turnout of 13 Vintage players at GENCON 2005.  -Ok its depressing

I'm glad that I am not the only one in this whole area who would like to play vintage unfortunately there isn't much of it...

FYI for others with the problem of finding places to play magic at all.  I know these places don't currently support Vintage, but if we show interest or if more will show up we can get some events going.

Scouts Hall - IPSWITCH  Suffolk Sci-Fi 01473 400 655 mick@suffolksci-fi.com mick_the_wookie@magic-thegathering.co.uk
Battlenet - NORWICH  www.battlenet.co.uk

Wagon/Horses - BRAINTREE WNM alternating constructed and drafts starting around 7:30pm - Quite Competitive

Bunting Rooms - Colchester Prereleases and other events by www.theplaceforgames.com

The Golden Hind - Cambridge   http://camagic.myfreeforum.org/index.php
