1  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Old School Magic in New York! New Website & Format! on: March 22, 2016, 03:00:34 pm
And since I can't help myself, to weigh in on the point of contention here, I'm glad to support CE/Revised/Chronicles in order to broaden the player base. It's hard enough even allowing those sets to get more than a handful of players together at any given time/place, so I think restricting to just the "hardcore" Swedish allowed sets would be shooting all of us, including those who have Beta everything, in the foot. I'd much rather be able to play more matches against a greater variety of decks than be beholden to the most "pure" form of throwback elitism. I take the "pimpness" factor as a personal challenge to incrementally improve the aesthetic appeal and collecting accomplishment of my own decks, but I certainly don't begrudge opponents who want to participate but have less insane spending priorities.
Exactly. Even Sol'kanar is hard to find these days.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Old School Magic in New York! New Website & Format! on: March 20, 2016, 10:18:27 pm
Yeah, so you should just stop posting in this topic, since we're here to discuss the wonders of Old School Magic, "hardcore" or not. Enforcing only original editions also helps the price boom we're witnessing, and makes the format even smaller. If you want exclusivity go to a VIP club or something.

About the Armageddon Clock rule, is it meant to be balanced or just fun? Smile
I wonder if there isn't a way to cheat that. Mirror Universe would become pretty good on extra time.
3  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Old School Magic in New York! New Website & Format! on: March 20, 2016, 06:12:45 pm
In actuality, these are budget formats that have a barrier to entry marginally higher than that of Legacy.

In what world is a set of power to play a blue deck a marginal cost?
I think he meant if people allow CE and IE.
4  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Old School Magic in New York! New Website & Format! on: March 20, 2016, 10:24:49 am
That's really elitist of you Katzby. I don't like allowing Chronicles, because those cards are ugly as hell. Other than that, I see no problem at all. FBB and CE are very expensive anyway, and hard to find. Also, as far as a throwback to good old days, they do exactly that visually, so I see no problem at all. Specially since the format is growing and stuff are getting so expensive that "barrier to entry marginally higher than that of Legacy" couldn't be less accurate.
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Behold he Beyond on: March 19, 2016, 10:06:21 am
lotus, yawg will, flusterstorm doesn't get you there after what?
Assuming you cast this and still have at least 1 mana available for Flusterstorm, right? And even if you do, you may have to work with Lotus mana only after will. Also, in this case, Flusterstorm doesn't win a counter war against 2 counters.
And if you pass the turn to untap, Flusterstorm gets way worse.
6  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Asylum Visitor on: March 18, 2016, 05:34:43 pm
The fact that you mostly will draw only 1 card extra per turn kinda turns me down on this one. But there's another card that may work well with him: Raven's Crime.
7  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Behold he Beyond on: March 18, 2016, 12:47:37 pm
It can be as game ending as Bargain, but this isn't Bargain, guys. Bargain nets you card advantage, so your combo after resolving it is protected. This is Doomsday meets Ill Gotten Gains. You probably need a Pact of Negation in those 3 cards to protect it.

For example, resolving a turn 1 Bargain can mean you just won the game. Resolving this... Well, we'll see how that game goes.

I really think somewhere in the format hides a combo deck with Mizzix's Mastery...
8  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Behold he Beyond on: March 18, 2016, 10:00:48 am
Hey, it's another card to take note for that Mizzix's Mastery deck that doesn't exist. Right along Enter the Infinite and Praetor's Counsel.

And well, there's always Rector/Omniscience. I wouldn't dismiss it that much if it's a game winning spell just like Yawgmoth's Bargain.
9  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Traverse The Ulvenwald on: March 17, 2016, 01:53:53 pm
If it was not restricted to basic lands it would not allow you to get any land. That would be Crop Rotation level and they won't do that again. But, if it said "forest" instead of basic land, it would be much better.
10  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Epiphany at the Drownyard on: March 17, 2016, 09:46:28 am
Every time you pay 0, 1, 2 or 3 for X you're gonna regret it and think there's probably a better card you could've put in that slot. So I can't understand how this can be a draw engine in any deck. If you're playing this for the high cost only then I think you're being to optimistic about the gameplay state or your games. Mind you I'm understanding you're play 4 Epiphany in the deck you're suggesting.

This is only better than Thirst for Knowledge or Fact of Fiction if you're paying less or way more. If you pay less it's really, really terrible. This is only viable on X=2 or more. If you're planning on paying more, so it will justify your choice of this over TfK and FoF, then you're thinking of paying X=4 or more. And I think that's really hard in a lot of matchups. Also, even if you do, you're never getting exactly what you want. In theory, I just can't see it, sorry.

If you want to post a decklist I'll gladly test it for a while so I can be convinced.
11  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Epiphany at the Drownyard on: March 17, 2016, 12:02:28 am
I really think that if I'm spending 8 mana on this there should probably be better things for me to do, no? I dunno, Consecrated Sphinx come to mind.

But anyway, if you pay X, it means on the average scenario you'll draw (X+1)/2 cards, right? So paying 6 mana (5+U) will net you 3 cards average. Is that really that great? What makes this better than Jace's Ingenuity or Mystic Confluence?

I understand it's scalable, but if you're paying 2U for this it gets way worse, doesn't it?
12  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Epiphany at the Drownyard on: March 16, 2016, 07:17:33 pm
For 3 mana, instant speed, aren't you just better running the not-so-played-right-now Thirst for Knowledge?

And if you want to scale is seems to me it gets even worse. I mean, would you play this for 50 with infinite mana in Bomberman? I guess that's the only deck I could see using this, even then...
13  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: SOI- Jace, unraveler of secrets on: March 16, 2016, 07:16:01 pm
Hey, look, I'm a frequent spoiler poster myself. I just think that there are kinda layers to it. The first time I heard someone praising Hangarback Walker was on the So Many Insane Plays podcast. I thought they were very wrong in liking the card, but understood their reason and all - well I got proved wrong, didn't I? But that's it, if someone wants to discuss the black delver (Heir of Falkenrath?) I'm all for it. It's cost is ok, etc, etc, but there are certain cards I just don't get, y'know?

Every card is "playable". Hell, who thought Porcelain Legionnaire or Seeker of the Way would ever see Vintage play? But they're there under specific circumstances. This could happen to this Jace also. Does it deserve a discussion? I guess not...

I learned a lot about Vintage in this forums exactly by having my bad ideas called out, but maybe I'm being too harsh and I'll myself post some terrible spoiler in the next days... Wink

EDIT: and you know what? If this guy wasn't a Jace I'd probably think it was ok to consider him (although probably still unplayable)
14  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: SOI- Jace, unraveler of secrets on: March 16, 2016, 05:45:20 pm
+1 is completely different from Jace TMS' +2...
15  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: SOI- Jace, unraveler of secrets on: March 16, 2016, 03:49:21 pm
I know we're refurbishing the forum and there is a discussion about harshness of discussions on TMD making people not wanting to post. I get that. But omg how many useless spoiler posts do we really need each spoiler season? I'd really like for people to just breathe deep and let it rest a little before posting spoilers here...

Anyway, this Jace seems awesome. In Commander. Budget. Razz
16  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Sigarda, Heron's Grace on: March 16, 2016, 03:45:22 pm
Thing is Dromoka found it's place in big mana control decks, not in humans. I doubt Sigarda will have the same impact. She doesn't protect herself, and hexproof to you is just too late at 5 mana to screw Tendrils or Cabal Therapy.
The only good thing for her is horizontal growth, but even then 2 mana is probably too much and it messes up your graveyard for delve spells or Jace/Snapcaster.
17  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Epiphany at the Drownyard on: March 16, 2016, 12:47:34 pm
Would even printing this as a FoF be too powerful? Maybe they didn't want that effect in Modern...
18  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Epiphany at the Drownyard on: March 16, 2016, 10:04:06 am
You're reading it wrong man. Your opponent chooses which pile goes to your hand.

So:
X = 1
You get the best of the top 2 cards, other one in the yard.

Is actually you get the worst of top 2.
19  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Nahiri, the Harbinger on: March 16, 2016, 12:25:21 am
All in all, I bet we're seeing a neutered Emrakul in Eldritch Moon.  If it's at least as decent as Ulamog was, that will warrant some discussion.

I agree. Actually, Emrakul appearing on Eldritch Moon is quite Lovecraftian: characters investigating super natural phenomena while getting mad and finding cosmic horrors (Emrakul) is pretty flavorful. She should be named "Emrakul, Great Old One" for extra flavor.
20  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Brain in a Bottle on: March 11, 2016, 08:54:32 pm
Oh, okay, putting the counter is not part of the cost. Of course. Smile
21  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Brain in a Bottle on: March 11, 2016, 11:16:53 am
a neat interation with this card is to stack it's first ability, sacrifice the card, then cast any spell with 0 mana - includes cards like ancestral vision, hypergenesis and living end.

not sure if it's vintage relevant, but it's a non-intuitive interation I thought I'd throw out.
I don't think that works. If it did, Powder Keg would be useless.
22  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Thing In The Ice on: March 10, 2016, 08:04:55 pm
You forget you can flip this as an instant. So even if Jace bounces it, you can flip it and bounce your opponent's whole table. And look, playing 4 spells a turn is not something impossible to do (if you want to flip it immediately. We do it all the time with Mentor.
The fact that this answers Mentor nicely seems good to me. And against MUD, if you can't play 4 spells, NO WIN CONDITION EVER would solve that game. Being able to bounce Lodestone, Ravager, Hangarback and the tokens is pretty awesome to me.

If he didn't bounce, he'd just be a blue Quirion Dryad, which is not enough for me at all. But the bounce ability seems good.

Now, the bad side to that is that even if you bounce Mentor/Pyro and the tokens, they are still able to simply play them again and generate chump blockers for this. So, it seems obvious that any deck packing this can't count solely on it as the wincon. And if you're not counting on it as a wincon, you can't be playing too many other creatures, since your Mentors would also be bounced.

So maybe this is a good card for those Storm Control decks, y'know? It's cheaper than Mentor, and not off-color as Pyromancer.
23  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [OGW] Jori En, Ruin Diver on: March 10, 2016, 02:21:37 pm
I just tried the Jori En Therapy list for a while and Jori seems awesome. Having 3 toughness is cool. I just don't think this is the perfect shell for it yet, at least not for 3. Most of the times I tapped out to play Jori En, leaving him open for removal. Of course if I counter the removal I draw a card, so it's all good. But I think we need a bit more mana for it to work better. Painter seems awesome with it! I'm picking 3 copies because why not?
24  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Shandalar on: March 10, 2016, 10:29:29 am
I have the original CDs of Shandalar and both the expansions. You guys know how I can rip it for you?

I think the problem is that the original versions won't work with modern operating systems - he has the originals already.
So I'm keeping these CDs here for nothing? Sad
Well, I also have the manuals... good times, I loved this game and it's the reason I love Old School formats so much Smile
25  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TheManaDrain.com - New Direction? on: March 09, 2016, 11:39:03 am
The web I use for reference in terms of an incredible database is TC decks.

http://www.tcdecks.net/format.php?format=Vintage

I use TCDecks and MTGTOP8, but a lot of results, like this Slash Panther one, are only available here and aren't posted anywhere else.

27  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Thing In The Ice on: March 08, 2016, 03:15:11 pm
The problem this has against Goyf is that it's worst late game. At that point, Goyf enters play a 5/6 (or something like it). With this you still have to flip it. Topdecking this in a topdeck war is way worse than Goyf, Delver or Pyromancer.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TheManaDrain.com - New Direction? on: March 07, 2016, 02:48:35 pm
Sorry, I haven't been reading the discussion, so I don't know if this was already suggested, but the one thing I think we lack the most in the Vintage community is a reliable Top8 database. I know that depends a lot on people posting lists, but other sites get the deck names and archetypes all wrong, too often putting a lot of different decks under the same name. I think if we could reproduce here what Morphling.de did, having good a search engine (that could search by card or combination of cards and dates) it would be awesome.
29  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Thing In The Ice on: March 07, 2016, 01:30:55 pm
Well, now Delver can go the MonoU route and pack Energy Flux and Back to Basics if it wants.

Or, on another note: MonoU can play the tempo beating as a complementar strategy.
30  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Rules updates on: March 07, 2016, 01:25:52 pm
I don't think I like these changes... I mean, it just sounds confusing if you have to look at the original side of the cards just to check its converted mana cost.
