1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Scrubbin out with UbaStax for a Jet. on: August 29, 2006, 07:56:54 pm
The main reason I hate R/G hate is because there are always random people who play stupid hate decks like that, yet almost none of them every T8 with the deck.  It is very rare that one of those random aggro ACTUALLY T8.  Obviously it can happen, but I would always use my 10 proxies and play a real deck if I had a choice between that and R/G hate.

I was the UBW fish deck that beat you 2nd round...

Your memory is horrible, I don't run dazes... and I don't bring in a second STP agaist you (just GhostMines and Fluxes)

And as for never T8, I lost to wolf in the Top4... "Aggro" is around to keep you boys honest.

Could you clarify the kind of environment in which you play? I got the impression that it is essentially a Vintage-style metagame with a variety of fun, but not competitive ideas being thrown around.  You mentioned that Null Rod was frequently useful and it appears that your play group doesn't object to proxied moxen, so I imagine it's a fairly high-power environment.

It runs the gambit. At the smaller ones I go to ou'll see a Ichord,  A storm combo, gifts, stax, dragon. None of which are 'optimal tmd net decked' builds, but not too causal. And you'll see an elf deck, mono red burn, and other 'little kid' decks.

The other events I go to are the Toronto area Mox tournys. Which are alot more competitive.

The event (a Library of Alexanda toury in Oshawa) I took this to I played agaist some real decks, and managed to beat a CS deck to top8 (I road the win on the back of permision and Nulrods.

Myself, I'd rather take this style of deck to it's conclusion, not it's logcal one (which would be drop green, and run standard fish.)

You said that you occasionally have trouble because Dark Confidant hits something with a high casting cost.  Sylvan Library is good at preventing that, but Sensei's Divining Top may also be useful to you.  If you think that you would like to run it, I would recommend using one in the place of a Brainstorm (Top behaves a little bit like a repeating Brainstorm) or in place of a Meddling Mage.  Depending on just how casual your metagame is, then a card that relies on predictability is going to be nominally less useful than it otherwise might be.

I dislike top really, while it is a brain storm on a stick, I feel it's too much of a mana sink, and I generaly don't have much mana free at any given moment..

if your going to run 4 colors, have you considered a 5 color-land mana base + choke?

I mean, your basically half way there.  you end up with lands that hurt you, which could be problematic with confidant.  And you loose fetchpowered bears.  But choke is a house right now.

No, I hadn't considered choke.

I was thinking of running Cities + Gemstones, but my roomate was running Ichord.

One werid thing was, other than having blood moon played agaist me, I really didn't have much in the way of mana problems (save the T8 game when i couldn't drop mage before oath came out :/ )

Also, the meta i tend to play in isn't overly blue dominated. If i'm going to a largery tourny, choke would make more sence, but in my hometown tourines choke is dead in.. 75% of the matchups.

Before i give my comments i would like you to answer this: How does werebear play out? Do you use that mana he can provide a lot? In my eyes he does nothing cause he has no disruptive ability or something. Sure Dark Confidant doesn't disrupt either but he gives you cards that can disrupt your opponent so in a way he is disrupting. I have a lot more to comment on some specific cards but i want to hear you out about werebear. Give some real game situations or tricks or anything ...

He was mostly a clock. Other than a a DSC showing up, he was the largest guy to hit the table all day. He moped up with some mongooses, and offed a CS player before he could recover.

As for mana, he sped me into more bears and cutpruses a few times, but honestly his mana ability is not fully used.

When that new 4/4 from Coldsnap comes out.. i Might drop the green for him... not sure.. there's just something amazing about being able to drop a creature and say "Wearbear STARE!!!" Wink

I'm looking for a little help/ideas with my UBWg Fishey/BS style deck.

First thing, I'm not aiming for the best possible deck every, so it's unlikely I'll drop the extra colours as I just enjoy playing this. I'm trying to tune this as far along it's path it can go.

Critters
4x WearBear
4x Dark Confidant
4x Meddling Mages
2x Dimir Cutpurse

Disruption/Control
4x Mana Leak
4x Force Of Will
3x Duress

Other
1x Silvan Library
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Vampric Tutor
4x Brainstorm
1x Swords to plowshares
1x Ancestral Recall
1x Timewalk

Mana

1x Mox Emerald
1x Mox Saphire
1x Mox Jet
1x Black Lotus
4x Blue Fetches
3x Tropical Island
3x Tundra
4x Underground Sea
4x Wasteland
1x Stripmine
1x Mox Diamond
1x Island

Sideboard
2x Stilfe
2x Nullrod
3x Swords to plowshares
3x Energy Flux
1x Kataki, War's Wage
3x Can't remember, and isn't so imporant...

Card choices:

Wearbear: I love this guy. I really do. And he seems to be able to handle the ground war once you hit threshold.

Silvan Library: This + Bob = lots of fun. I lost a couple of games to bob kicking me in the head with FoW, I really wish i had this out at then...

1x Swords: Darksteel Colossus, nuff said. Sure it's a one of, and i only have 2 tutors for it, but at my last tourny I only saw one DSC and I had this in my hand at the time.

Mox Diamond: 4 colours and bears needing threshold, it works...

Cutpurse: Everybody says this should be Shadowmage, but ppl were scared of this guy all day... and yeah I got the idea from SS

Null Rod in the SB. This was really a mistake, i road NullRod wins games 2&3 alot. I'm going to maindeck it in the future.

Oh, and the power was proxied, and I own the rest of the cards just in case your going to throw random expensive cards in as ideas. Smile

Why run kobolds where you could play shield sphere and phyrexian walker? the walls are really usefull against any kind of aggro-control decks, they are artefact for the blue part (if you run it).

We ran the kobolds for two reasons.
A) Style. Wink
B) Can be imprinted on chrome mox. (It's happened a few times...)

Against meddling the best card you can find is Massacre, free cost and it cleans up your opponent board and you keep your little wall that will give you again some turns before going.

Agreed.

Does Ill-Gotten Gains have a spot in this deck?  That deck is savage in Legacy, and this deck has almost all of the pieces...Resolving a Iggy is a mindtwist on your opponent, while adding 3 to your storm.  Speaking of which, Mindtwist?

Also, don't you want Sol Ring, Mana Vault, and Mana Crypt?  I understand the heavy black commitment of the deck, but they're restricted for a reason.  You also have plenty of rituals to get the black mana you need.

Crypt will be added once we track one down, didn't think it'd work but it does.

Vault/Sol Ring tend to feel like they slow you down when you draw them, it's a werid feeling...

As long as we're thinking about black mana accelerators, Lake of the Dead might be a little-known option.  It's pretty good at accelerating you to a big storm turn, while building your thresh too.  Good luck with your unpowered storm deck...it'll be hot if it works Smile

Lake can be a scarey drop, but it's a turn 3 play, and by then generaly we've won or lost.

It's an idea for SB, as they can't counter eveything in your hand on turn 3....

preist of gix can be helpful to up your storm count.

Totally forgot about this card.  He's very solid and is gorgeous in theory...but I'm wondering where he could fit.

I've tried him, he works better in theory than in practice.

He's amazing if you draw the a dark ritual and him at the same time, otherwise it can be hard to have the 3 mana to play him the first time. And he sucks large with Y. Will (doesn't trigger the 3 mana).

He could work if you have crypt/vault/sol ring going at the same time, but we're really aiming for turn 1/2 wins

MMM, mono black tendrils...I like it.

Glaring hole #1 - wheres the Necropotence?

It's been debated between us, and it seems kinda situtational, as you don't get the cards till next turn, unlike Y. bargin.
It's something we should really try tho..

Duress is good.  Cabal Therapy is very unnecessary.  Unmask is good because it's free .

Therapy + kobold = 3 for storm count, and a hurt hand acrost the table....

Ancient Craving/Ambition's Cost, maybe?

Feels slow/expensive for mana compaired to the BBB draw 4, pay 1/2 life cards.. But, soemthing to slot in and try.

Also, you want the 4th Night's Whisper.  It's too good for only 3.

I'm not liking the Kobolds, sadly...I know they provide mass mana w/ Culling the Weak...but it seems just too situational.

-4 Crookshank, +4 land grant
-4 Crimson, +1 fastbond
+1 crop rotation

...2 more slots....hmm...
+1 Night Whisper
+1 Swamp

and of course -4 Swamp +4 Bayou

Now, in defence of the cull/kobolds. It's really nice to jump up to 4 mana, and then pay 3 for the Contract/Cruel Bargin, with the one floating to power another cull/dark ritual into more sillyness.

I agree we should go back to 4 nights wispers, one was pulled to try the death wish.

Your changes would make it more consitant i belive, but I'm not sure it'll have the same snap it has right now.

Your mention of fastbond just made me smile, if we can get the duals for it, we'll run it.

After a rather interesting evolution from the 9th edition black pre-con, to a necratog/Nantuko Husk based black weenie, my roomate started to move towards a type 1 Tendrils Deck.

Our current deck is very focused on the win now, who cares what my opponent does mindset.

We are powerless, and play in a fairly unpowered enviroment, and have no clue about the meta as the first local turny we're going to make it to is this weekend.

We're currently seeking some general advice/ideas on how to take this. We know it won't be as strong as TPS or Meandeck Tendrils but it can still pull a turn 1 win/amazing swing recovery to go off.

Here is the list we are currnetly working with (The death wishes are the newest addition, not sure if they'll stick around or not)

Mana
1 chrome mox
1 mox dimond
1 lotus pettle
1 lions eye dimond
11 swamp

Mana Accl. (Yeah, kobolds are mana.. no.. really)

4 crookshank kobolds
4 crimson kobolds
4 culling the weak
4 dark ritual
4 cabal ritual

Draw
4 cruel bargins,
3 infernal contracts
3 night's whispers
1 yawgmoth's will
1 yawgmoths bargin

Tutor
3 Death wish
1 vampiric tutor
1 demonic tutor
1 demonic consoltation

Disruption
4 duress

Win
3 tendrils of agony

SB:
3 defence grid
3 unmask
4 cabal therapy
2 tormod's crypt
1 tendrils of agony
1 cranial extraction
1 vendetta

Yes, the sideboard is complete trash. The vendetta is there for Meddling Mage, the rest is geared towards an unpowered oath deck.

So, we're just after some advice/ideas direction to take this. We're pondering picking up land grants/fetches/bayous to try to make it a bit more self thinning.

Thanks
