Hi!

Did you (intentionally) forget Brainstorm? Is Tolarian Winds really better?

Also in this deck is Mana Drain really necessary? Getting double blue up seems a bit harder with this deck. Stifle also protects against opposing Wastelands after all. Perhap Negates instead?

If you are willing to take out the Null Rod then you can play with Fastbond + Zuran Orb + Barbarian Ring. Just a thought.
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Enlightened Tutor in Vintage on: February 07, 2009, 01:51:16 pm
And what broken artifact do you suggest?

Apart from Timevault. Very Happy

I've been eying skill borrower for a while but can't seem to find something good enough.
3  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Mox Ruby Tournament Results! 10-20-08 Manila, Philippines on: October 21, 2008, 05:02:54 am
I played BBS, ported from the ICBM open. with one modification, -1 Wasteland +1 Lotus Petal

Dan Carp, aka The Hebrew Hammer
Team ICBM
Tezzeret Blue
Created by Stephen Menendian

8 Island
3 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
2 Negate
4 Mana Leak
4 Impulse
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
4 Ophidian
2 Back to Basics
3 Powder Keg
3 Tezzeret the Seeker
1 Time Vault
1 Fact or Fiction

Sideboard:
4 Energy Flux
4 Propaganda
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Sower of Temptation

With my almighty Ophidian Proxies!

Anyways Round 1

I play against JM Crisostomo (Platinum Oath)
Now JM and I have this history, I beat him at the Swiss, and he beats me in the top 8. This'd be the third time we meet in a tournament.

Game 1

Land go. Except his land is a Forbidden Orchard. And they get to attack. With him tapping them every turn, the life total swings to my favor. I didn't get to see his deck and neither did he see mine.

Game 2

I pull out the Tez combo with FoW back-up.

1-0

-
Round 2

vs RG Beats Marco

Game 1
I play a turn one Ophidian which dies thereafter. He resolves an Aether Vial and things do downhill from there. The following turns involve me disrupting his mana base but he plays another Vial and puts down Kird Ape, Tin Street Hooligan, and Magus of the Moon (to which I laugh.) I dig as much as I can but find no second Ophidian to stem the bleeding or Tez to kick off the combo.

Game 2
I side in my Sowers and Propagandas, in hindsight, I think I should've put some Chalices as well...

This time my deck just doesn't cooperate. I resolve a Propaganda whid 3
ch stops the rush of critters. I also had a Powder Keg to nuke a critter and Back to Basics (he was running a lot of non-basic lands.) But in the end, after 2 Impulses, I find no way to stop the rush and lose.

1-1

-
Round 3

Game 1

I play against Ariz playing Rock

Game one saw me rolling over to Tarmogoyf beatdown. Turn 1 Cabal Therapy took a FoW away and soon another Cabal Therapy nuked my kill condition. Playing disposable critters (BoP) flashbacked the therapies for more hand rape.

Game 2

Land Mox go. He plays a Cabal Therapy which takes nothing. Eventually he plays a Null Rod which I realized just kills my deck haha but I counter it anyway. I counter ALL his threats (this deck is sick that way haha) and resolve a Tezzeret fetching a vault, which goes a full turn unharassed.

Game 3

This game I had a lot of artifact acceleration and Ophidian action going on. I play a Tezzeret which untaps my Mox Sapphire and Sol Ring. My opponent plays Cabal Therapy which I allow to take away Time Vault. Next turn I attack ftw.

2-1

-
Round 4

I play against Philip piloting Oath. Yuck.

Game 1 and Game 2 saw me completing the combo early. Game 2 on the back of Ophidian.

3-1

-
Round 5 against Ryan playing Oath... YUCK.

Game 1

"War of the bling, he says." To which I respond, "not this deck." I didn't even have a set of Ophidians.
He fetches his Guru Island which meets my topdecked Korean Strip Mine. The game proceeds in such a way that I mana screw him and when he has developed some form of a mana base due to unlucky draws, I've already put together the Tez combo.

Game 2

He plays his Guru Island which meets the Korean Strip Mine I had in hand. HEHE. Anyway next turn I play a LoA and Moxen. He draws no lands for a long time while I resolve to Ophidians which makes me Ancestral every turn. And I also have LoA. At this point, I'm pitching Tez and BoB for a hand full of counters. When I finally play my Tez he uses his 7 card hand with 3 FoW's to counter it. But I have 2 Mana Drains, 1 Negate, and 2 FoWs.

But all things considered, he was just unlucky with his mana.

4-1 good enough to draw with Gio.

-----

Top 8, I play against JM Crisostomo

Karma's a b***h.

I lose both games to lack of draw, a crucial turn in game 1 was when I Mana Leaked his Sensei's Divining Dildo which apparently was bait for Black Lotus YawgWin. I never recovered from there. His did have super secret tech Read the Runes which allowed him to maximize his Will turn.

Game two I was just pissed all throughout. The deck didn't cooperate at all. He Strip Mined me and I was left with just one land. I didn't see another land until the game ended. I eventually drew into a Lotus Petal which I used to play Impulse which didn't find me any land. I grabbed a Mox Jet from it and played it. In hindsight this was my play error as JM DTed for a Krosan Grip. I needed two mana to play Powder Keg to knock my Orchard tokens out and Oath into Sower of Temptation. I heard Platinum Angel works nicely.

Failzorz.

-----

From the start of the day I really wasn't confident with the list. I had only constructed the deck the night before and was finding the deck weird for it's lack of Bounce or Draw. If I were to play the deck again, I'd replace Ophidians with TFK and fit in a Tinker Plat win condition. Our metagame has a lot of Oath and I can't really risk Ophidian. I really don't know why it doesn't have bounce but it worked! Very Happy
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Vintage W/G Aggro controll? on: October 07, 2008, 11:24:33 am
Why not run Red instead for Blood Knight and REB. You'll have better game against Shop decks (artifact hate) and Combo decks (Pillar) as well. Though you lose Tarmogoyf which is a huge clock.
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] "Broken Mirror" Doomsday on: October 07, 2008, 12:09:21 am

So you don't autolose to decks running Sphere/Thorn/Canonist G1.

Ok, so it's purely a metagame call and those cards aren't involved in anything else? Like a back-up plan for storm Tendrils?

So would it be ok to replace them with Street Wraiths? Or Quicken?
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] "Broken Mirror" Doomsday on: October 06, 2008, 01:32:35 pm
Hey just wondering, (I'm no combo player) what are the maindeck Hurkyl's and Rebuild for?

No Imperial Seal? I think it's better than the slot for Ad Nauseum.

What about Street Wraith?
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Card Discussion] Cranial Extraction in Vintage on: December 31, 2006, 12:59:20 pm
I'm suggesting that you take out the Cranial Extractions and place them in your sideboards. you're Your argument is correct, but it depends on your meta - if it is oath/dragon infested then Cranial Extraction might be main deck material.

Also, i suggest you replace those Phyrexian Arenas with Dark Confidants: faster, easier to cast, makes for mini tendrils win.

It only takes a few extra seconds to use capitals where appropriate, so please take the time in future.

8  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] count chocula on: December 18, 2006, 08:23:36 am
i was thinking the same thing with blue

if you add blue

that would mean
-3 hymn to tourach
-1 cabal therapy
-2 corpse dance
-1 rhystic tutor
+1 tinker
+1 dsc/mem jar
+4 brainstorm
+1 mystical tutor
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] count chocula on: December 15, 2006, 09:05:09 pm
hate usually does. just one question though, no necropotence?

great deck idea though, it looks nice.
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] landstill, please help fix this deck on: December 12, 2006, 12:16:04 pm
um...yeah interesting stuff from everywhere hehe, here's the list i eventually ran

4 tundra
3 flooded strands
3 polluted deltas
3 islands
2 plains
3 wastelands
1 strip mine
4 mishra's factory
2 faerie conclave

4 force of will
4 mana drain
2 misdirection
4 standstill
4 brainstorm
1 enlightened tutor [possibly tutors sideboard tech]
1 balance
3 swords to plowshares
2 nevinrryal's disk
2 crucible of worlds
2 exalted angel
2 chain of vapor
2 stifle
1 fact or fiction
1 lotus petal

sb
2 tormod's crypt
2 pithing needle
2 spawning pit
2 moat
2 energy flux
3 blue elemental blast
2 meddling mage

despite my dismal 2-2-2 finish, i'm quite pleased with the deck.

my losses were both to powered oath decks, they just have too many turn one broken plays but it's an accepted drawback since the players invested money on their power. my wins were against unpowered oath and stompy. the draws were against fcg and a storm combo deck (its a headache for both sides, seriously...) i was just really pissed of with the draw against fcg, the player was stalling...

anyways, the main changes i made to the deck made my deck run smoother. thank you for your suggestions. exalted angel was the bomb in every aggro deck. an early drain powered fact or fiction just made the game sweet. the lotus petal is there for possible turn one standstill or drain which happened quite often. moat in the sideboard was seriously brilliant, that is only because i managed to borrow two copies the day itself, sadly however i don't think i'll be able to borrow them next time.

with regards to the stifles, i wish they'd pop up in my hand in my opening hand more often but i'm happy with the frequency which they performed. my meta isn't that much into combo so basically stifle is an all aorund card and not a metagame call card, therefore the 2 is just right for me.

i've decided to forego the ur version until more gifts/slaver/blue based decks pop up in my meta. i've been studying your decklists and i think i can switch easily when i decide to go ur. playtesting will do the rest i guess.

with regards to keeping certain cards in my deck, the compulsion to remove stifle is with regards to the sensei's top and counterbalance combo which didn't go very well with me before so i'm sticking with my stifles, besides one of them is foiled Very Happy [working my way on the pimp...sad how there's no power though hehe]

i will not play without the enlightened tutor because it fetches sideboard tech. spawning pit rapes oath. tutoring for a standstill is also a frequent play. but tutoring for a cow with drain mana is fun

repeal in the deck is a very intriguing choice. maybe i'll run it when people get tired tinkering with their colossi. um yeah that came out wrong.  Rolling Eyes

btw, our champ was a lady! playing powered oath haha.
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] landstill, please help fix this deck on: November 27, 2006, 10:01:52 am
hm... sounds pretty good.

so my only anti oath and colossi would be CoV but otherwise random aggro and fish are taken care of, would you be so kind as to post a sample ur landstill build?

thanks a bunch.
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [deck] landstill, please help fix this deck on: November 16, 2006, 08:15:24 am
it's definitely no proxies. so i'm pretty sure i can't run the tinker colossus route. cotv i'll try and give it a whirl. i'll have to dl mws first, thanks for you help though.
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / [deck] landstill, please help fix this deck on: November 15, 2006, 09:53:58 am
i'm currenlt piloting landstill and i'm having problems with fish. i've an upcoming tourney and i need help fixing my deck.

my understanding of fish is that it's a deck built to hose other decks. it uses little annoying critters plus counters [if it has blue], discard [if it has black] to win.

given that this kind of deck is built to beat other decks, how can other decks beat this anti-you deck??

my meta is 20% powered, no proxies. mostly fish(ug uw wb)/fcg/sui black/oath. then the powered people play gifts/cs/doomsday/meandredge/dragon/stax

what would be the most optimal deck for me to play in this meta? since most people play fish and eventually the top tables are filled with the powered players.

i am currently deciding to run landstill, here's the decklist.

4 tundra
3 flooded strands
3 polluted deltas
3 islands
2 plains
4 wastelands
1 strip mine
4 mishra's factory
2 faerie conclave

4 force of will
4 mana drain
2 misdirection
4 standstill
3 brainstorm
1 enlightened tutor [possibly tutors sideboard tech]
1 balance
4 swords to plowshares
2 nevinrryal's disk
3 crucible of worlds
2 decree of justice
2 chain of vapor
2 stifle

sb
2 tormod's crypt
2 pithing needle/null rod
1 nev's disk
2 seal of cleansing
2 energy flux
1 chain of vapor
3 blue elemental blast
2 meddling mage

also random question, what do i take out for time walk?

thanks for you help, hope i posted in the right place.
if you think landstill is a poor deck choice please suggest a better one, just not oath [i have issues].

its a great article, great exposure for the non-vintage playing magic community! hope vintage gets a healthier population in our country because of that! Very Happy
15  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Sideboarding with Heartbeat on: August 25, 2006, 07:53:11 am
i've seen people use bound//determined in our meta against control back when UR decks were the decks to play. but nowadays it depends on your meta. the way heartbeat wins against Ux decks according my friend who's been doing well in nationals is to board out half the combo. bait the opponent into thinking that you went for the whole man plan.
16  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic cards for sale in '93 - '94 on: August 24, 2006, 11:12:01 am
haha i remember laughing at mishra's workshop back then . and skipping over the duals for 'geddons.  then again i was in second grade and whatever money i had was birthday money so spending that much on cards didn't seem quite right. if we could turn back time. but i guess if we did, we'd lose all good and bad times magic brought us that brought us to the hopefully better versions we are today.
17  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Whats your favorite invitational creature? on: August 24, 2006, 10:44:50 am
i'd vote for bob. frankly because every format can use him. meddling mage at second, coz i'm a landstill player. third vote goes to solemn simulacrum. he's bred to suffer born to die. i've used him when he was standard legal in tooth and nail and big red, both times he was very helpful. i also used him during a proxy vintage tourney using control slaver. it was pretty fun stuff.

rakdos augermage is rather strong in standard. if he had haste i'm sure people would've used him in vintage.

worst card for me would be sylvan safekeeper. frankly because i can't really see it making large impacts on the game.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: Introduce Yourself on: August 24, 2006, 10:38:23 am
hi guys! i'm ozy from the philippines. i started playing around 4th edition (second grade haha), quit during urza's saga. then got back into the game at kamigawa (bad start i know), then my friend's cousin convinced us to try vintage and well, i love the format.

i'm now a sophomore in ateneo de manila university. still looking for cards. i'm a budget player, but then again, most of my meta is as well. saving up for tundras and drains Very Happy

hope to contribute to this community!
