1  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Jin-Gitaxias -- Oath's new best friend on: April 20, 2011, 04:56:10 pm
Sorry, I meant Blightsteel not Darksteel.  In either case, both cards you mentioned allow your opponent to untap and take a full turn before they come online.  Jin is immune to sorceries and forces the opponent to deal with him on your turn before he turns into slightly more than a double Ancestral.   I don't know how much of a difference that will make, you could certainly whiff on the 7 cards you draw. On a side note, he actually synergizes pretty well with Emrakul.

I think his biggest benefit is that he has a devastating effect against most decks and he protects himself by accelerating you into counters that are useful in any other situation; he doesn't require the addition of otherwise dead cards to get there which frees up slots to play even more counters which has a positive feedback on his card drawing effect.

Jin-Gitaxias  {8} {U} {U}
Legendary Creature - Praetor (M)
Flash
At the beginning of your end step, draw seven cards.
Each opponent's maximum hand size is reduced by seven.
5/4

This guy essentially puts your opponent on a 1 turn clock much like Blightsteel Colossus since the probability of coming back from having your entire grip continually mind twisted is close to zip (unless you're dredge).  However, unlike the Colossus, this guy actually lets you sculpt your hand the very same turn he comes down to ensure he sticks.  In addition, a pair of Gaea's blessings Emrakul can be used to recycle your library so that Jin doesn't become a liability if your opponent has a good board position.  You could, alternatively, back him up with a Tyrant which really cinches down the lock.
3  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Best Movies of 2010 on: January 21, 2011, 07:12:56 pm
Inception was, by far, the best movie I've seen all year and I'm going to go as far as saying best movie I've ever seen.   It satisfied every emotion I could possibly ask for in a movie.  I wasn't aware that Nolan directed one of my other favorite movies, Memento, until I looked him up.  If you haven't seen Nolan's first movie "Following" which is shot for less than $10K and only 64mins long I highly recommend it if you enjoy his type of movies (it's on Youtube).  Also, the Inception sound track by Hanz Zimmer is crazy good, I listen to it when I program as it puts me into the zone.   I've never downloaded a soundtack before but this one caught my attention.

After looking at the reviews, looks like I'm going to go have to watch "Black Swan" and "The Town".

RE: "The Other Guys".  If it's really better then "Talladega Nights" then it's a must watch for me.   Can it top the best scene in "Talladega Nights" which was the Baby Jesus Grace/Prayer? Also best quote from that movie was "Ahh Grandma, not muh prision shank!"

At a cost of  {3}, could it find a place in Workshop decks?

8  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: BBS on: November 18, 2010, 03:17:22 am
I'm liking Gilded Drake in the Sower slot.  It's easier on both the cost and color commitment and it's also reusable with Jace and/or Repeal.   Also, Gilded Drake combos pretty nicely with Mimic Vat which I could see a a decent SB card against fish.
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Flash is Back!! on: November 11, 2010, 03:13:03 pm
This deck suffers from the same fate the Channel-Mirror deck has. It's just way too fragile with only one copy to work with causing you to clutter your deck up with tutors which in turn make the deck way too narrow.
10  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Rings of Brighthearth Tawnos Coffin on: October 11, 2010, 10:41:01 pm
And both the original and the copy of the ability refer back to the same Tawnos's Coffin for their delayed triggered ability.  So when the coffin becomes untapped or leaves the battlefield two abilities trigger, each bringing back one of the two exiled creatures.

I know that when you make the copy of things, text that refers to the cardname essentially gets changed to ~this~. So I would have thought that the copied ability would reference an object that doesn't exist and thus the exiled creature would never come back.  So, how do you know when a copy references ~this~ object vs an existing object like in this case?

Because nowhere on MWS's website nor program will you find any trace of WotC IP
12  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: 'Oh Shit Tezzer-Vault! Shop Combo' on: September 30, 2010, 11:17:54 pm
Rings say if its not a mana ability.

You don't copy the mana ability, you copy this ability:

    {3}: Untap Basalt Monolith.

    The sequence is as follows:

    • Tap Basalt Monolith for {3}
    • Pay {3} to activate the Untap ability -- this triggers Rings of Brighthearth
    • Pay {2} (from external sources) to copy the untap ability
    • Untap copy resolves -- Monolith untaps
    • Tap monolith for {3} -- this doesn't use the stack, {3} floating in pool
    • Original untap resolves
    • Tap monolith for {3} -- {6} floating in pool

You just paid {5} mana to make {6}.[/list]
    13  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: 'Oh Shit Tezzer-Vault! Shop Combo' on: September 30, 2010, 10:58:05 pm
All it's missing is some janky Rings of Brighthearth combo!

You ruined my surprise about Rings of Brighthearth but janky it is not in this deck; it breaks Forgemaster in half as it fetches you both key and vault in one activation.  Also, if you sub in Basalt Monolith for Grim Monolith, it combos to make infi mana.  It also turns top into  {3}: Draw a card.  I'm sure I'm missing other synergies it has with cards this deck already plays.
14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Scars Prerelease/Release Events on: September 26, 2010, 03:13:09 am
(I decided not to get my drains or beta sol ring and mint Juzam and other expensive cards signed).
Perhaps I'm in the minority for this one but thank you for not ruining mint eternal cards.  I want to stab my eyes every time I see a mint piece of power or what have you get completed defaced by a signature.
15  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Scars Prerelease/Release Events on: September 25, 2010, 10:49:58 pm
Also, someone at the event I went to (40 people) opened both Elspeth and Venser.  What a day.

Some fag next to me today did the same thing.  Sad

Likewise, except Koth and Venser.  Funny thing was that he traded his 6 packs with some guy across the table before we cracked them.  I guess these two gues did the same thing at the midnight pre-rel at which this lucky SOB pulled a foil Mox Opal so they decided to do it again today.
16  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SCD] Precursor Golem on: September 24, 2010, 02:04:50 pm
Do the copies resolve first or the original?  I think when something triggers during casting, the trigger is delayed until the original is put onto the stack and then the copies go on top of that but I'm not 100% sure on this.
17  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Counterspell Land on: September 23, 2010, 08:30:25 pm
This land needs to be legendary so you can change the payment to be  {2}.  Making it legendary makes it so it's not broken with crucible of worlds, at best it's essentially two resistors.  Also, your opp can "counter" this by laying down his own on his turn to wipe them both off the board

EDIT: Didn't notice it came into play tapped. I think that also can be removed if made legendary.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic Draft Simulator on: September 22, 2010, 12:12:03 am
As somebody who has tried out many a drafting site and had some design influence on one of them, you did a phenomenal job.  I only have a slight few criticisms and one feature request:

    • On my laptop I can only see 2 of the 3 rows of cards at any given time.  I think you could reduce the cards to 80% of their current size to squeeze in that 3rd row without the loss of readability
    • The bots don't seem particularly good at drafting.  Many of them seem to be drafting a significant amount in all 5 colors. I just drafted the best deck of my life which included a full playset of Pacifisms, three of which were pick 3 or 4
    • This site is just screaming to go multiplayer with live drafts (just drafting not playing).  If you can do this, you've got every other site beat hands down.  Functionality wise, its already the best there is.  Live 8 player drafts will also help improve your picking order data to make the bots better
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Rumors/Previews/mtg.com articles on: September 18, 2010, 03:10:56 am
    Nim Deathmantle  {2}
    Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creature has +2/+2, Intimidate and is a black Zombie.
Whenever a nontoken creature is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, you may pay {4}. If you do, return that card to the battlefield under you control and attach ~this~ to it.
    Equip {4}

People have already posted that this creates an infinite mana combo (of any color) with Composite Golem but I am way more excited about the chance to finally break Thoughtpicker Witch.  For {5} mana a turn, we can now exile every relevant card our opponent is about to draw.
20  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Rachet Bomb on: September 17, 2010, 01:34:40 am
Part of the activation cost of the bomb is to sacrifice it, so by the time you can proliferate the bomb is in the GY and will not gain additional counters.
21  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Cockatrice - intended as successor to MWS on: September 16, 2010, 02:34:49 pm
    BruiZar,

I agree with just about everything you said about the design tweaks this app needs but I think your last post is unnecessary and is detracting from your suggestions.  While redlines are great when you're the boss and can dictate what needs to happen, they don't tend to do so well when you're "just another opinion."  What I find works best in those situations is to come up with a concept design (say in Photoshop) that has enough detail to visually get your point across.  Its hard to argue when the concept art is staring you in the face and is noticeably easier to digest and interpret data than the current design.  As you said, we are very much so visual machines.
    22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [1E] Single-Card Discussion - Ancestral Recall?? on: September 02, 2010, 06:41:36 pm
Hmm, you're right; I didn't look at it from that perspective.  Now that you remind me, it is an aweful turn one play because It forced me to discard a Helm of Chatzuk that would have really come in handy later in the game. In fact I think I lost that game because of it.
    23  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [1E] Single-Card Discussion - Ancestral Recall?? on: September 02, 2010, 02:16:48 pm
Guys, I think there might be something to this card and I may have jumped the gun in my last post requesting this thread be moved.  I put this card into my banding deck and goldfished until I was able to play this card 100 times.  I compiled some statistics and threw them together into Excel.  Here is a pie chart of what I found, I think the graph is pretty telling.

    24  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [1E] Single-Card Discussion - Ancestral Recall?? on: September 02, 2010, 12:38:03 am
Why are we talking about this card in a Vintage Community Discussion forum? Mods, please move this thread to the Other Formats forum because this card is clearly not vintage worthy.
    25  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [1E] Single-Card Discussion - Ancestral Recall?? on: September 01, 2010, 05:39:08 pm
I hope this card becomes popular because my Underworld Dreams deck will steam roll this card.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Cockatrice - intended as successor to MWS on: September 01, 2010, 05:01:34 pm
I think this is an excellent idea and makes a lot of business sense.  It's the only good way to break the catch22 situation you find yourself in.  Being able to tap into the establish userbase that is the MWS crowd will get word-of-mouth of your program going like wildfire.  Also, if you can somehow non-intrusively highlight features that are disabled during a Cockatrice/MWS hybrid match, you'll give people an incentive to move over to your platform.  The fact that a new version of MWS being released has a statistically significant chance of happening after the release of Duke Nukem Forever means that most will stick around once they switch; I know I would.

Personally, I think Engineering might be a bit too broad.  I would like to see a Computer Science/Programmer category or break Engineer into two -- hardware or software.

With such a large dependence on Lotus piles, there's probably a place for Leyline of Anticipation, Chalice, Dryad Arbor

Hah, you bastage. That was going to be my pile if/when there was a game started.

I think this thread has enough interest to start up a game. Anybody here with experience running one of these willing to take the reigns?
