1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Oath deck: I need help! on: April 06, 2006, 07:08:10 am
If you are playing in 0 proxy tournaments...I would then suggest sticking with the traditional UG oath build, just play Razia and Akroma instead of the Weaver+Hydra+SoTN etc. I must stress my shakyness about playing ICBM or GWS without power since you will be hardcore raped by nonbasic removal..wastelock = game. The UG build has a more stable land count and IMO will play better than an unpowered version of GWS or ICBM since it will be more focused.

First off welcome to TMD. Since you are new to the forum I would suggest you check out the rules and regulations as you violated a few already =/. Now, to touch upon the topic at hand, if you want to see the most current builds of Dragon, or any deck for that matter, I would HIGHLY suggest checking out the tournament reports section. There you will find not only peoples decklists, but their thoughts on add-ins or cuts, etc. Hope you find what you are looking for.
3  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: unpowered shoplles on: March 24, 2006, 07:05:54 pm
The loss of power and workshops is HUGE. You are unable to play turn 1 Metal Worker, Trinisphere, and Tangle Wire. This is unacceptable if you are trying to go the controllish rout. Staff also becomes bad because of this..if you are going to be playing budget brown, I would HIGHLY suggest you just go with beats: Juggys, Su-chi, etc. Even though you may have Ancient Tomb, City of Traitors, etc...they are dropping 1 less mana, and 3 is the magic number in workshop decks.

Another reason to just go pure beats is..Rebuild. Although you may be thinking you are playing a semi controlish deck..the loss of that extra acceleration provided by Moxes, Lotus, and Workshops puts less pressure on the opponent since spells will be cast 1 turn later-allowing them to find Rebuild and blow up your board.
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: BGW Deck (Yes, you read right) on: March 06, 2006, 08:07:02 pm
When I saw this decklist and post a few things came to mind:
Instead of Seal of Cleansing...how about Ray of Revelation? Its a lot better against Oath ^_^ Also, if Sligh and Goblins are prominant in your meta..why would you maindeck Negators? Seems like it is going to be a dead card in most of your games-leaving you with just Angels Sad
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Mono Black on: March 02, 2006, 08:45:23 pm
I would HIGHLY reccomend maybe playing Planar Void over Crypt since
1. its unaffected by Pithing Needle and Powder Keg, and all the anti-artifact hate
2. Most decks run key spells at 1 (ie Goblin Welder, Brainstorm, etc) making them more hesitant to play Chalice at it
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shahravoid on: March 02, 2006, 07:29:26 pm
Penguin: You are correct, black does have some fast creatures, however umm Sarcomancy and Carnophage probably are not the best ideas for this deck, god-forbid you lose a subgame your own creatures may deal you in. With regards to Negator-I mean its only good if you play Rituals, but since this is a Zad deck I dont feel it should be playing Ritual to begin with. I mean just one reason for not playing Ritual is the creatures that generally compliment it in most decks: Negator, Nantuko Shade, and Hypnotic Specter, all of which are WAY too slow IMO, especially relying on 4:60 cards in the deck to get them out in a timely manner.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Bazaar + Dredging vs. Chains on: March 01, 2006, 11:23:08 pm
Ok, so when I activate Bazaar and then Dredge 2x Golgari Grave-Troll's what exactly happens?  Do I dredge both and then Draw (Just like you dredging in light of Tolarian Winds) and then discard my 3 cards?

Also, the way Chains of Mephistopheles reads it says "If a player WOULD draw a card." Since I activate Bazaar do I still discard because I WOULD be drawing a card but decide to dredge instead (which is not considered drawing)?

Any help to clear this up is greatly appreciated.
8  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: New thread, new decklist U/r unpowered Fish on: March 01, 2006, 10:24:09 am
With regards to the sideboard, I've seen some great results with Extract (not with my playing-but from what I have read over and over again). I would definitely suggest you maybe check into playtesting it and seeing how it works out for you. Every Fish/Fish-esque deck I have seen lately has been using them, so they gotta be showing some great results.
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Finding the Confidant deck on: February 27, 2006, 09:22:20 pm
"And yes WE ALL SIDE THEM GAME 2 djeez..."
Then what was the point or arguing pretty much AT me that negator is good against aggro if you infact side them out? O_O I happen to comprehend magic more than you could possibly know. My whole comment about early negators was well...pretty self explanatory..you want Negator as early as possible, its a rule of thumb..early off they should have less creatures than say..playing him turn 5 Lawlzzz Casting Negator should not intimidate any remotely decent aggro player, not should it force them to play differently O_O

You state that magic evolves...so let me ask you this..what Aggro decks (that you will ACTUALLY see in a tournament) is Negator possibly effective against? I think thats the question that should have been asked right off the bat-because it clearly seems I am playing magic at a whole level above you guys...I mean WW -_- You have got to be kidding me.

Anyways, yep DSC, sir fat-alot seems like hed work, and Confidant works sweet with Vamp, Imp Seal, Mystical etc to get that Tinker and get the big man into play quick as possible.
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Finding the Confidant deck on: February 27, 2006, 06:13:32 pm
Those of you saying that Negator is good against Aggro are not being rational...in any sort of competitive environment-ANY aggro deck will eat him alive...I mean if the point is to cast early Negator..chances are you wont have many permenants out correct? Any early played creature is an even trade for Negator..YOU ARE LOSING PERMENANTS..I mean this is a serious loss in this meta, let alone any other meta in history.

If he attacks and is blocked, you sac permenants, and of course may get some damage though and most Aggro deck's creature will die...but since they are AGGRO they will keep playing them..this is what you are not realizing..so here you are losing more and more permanants -_-. I mean...I'm really banging my head on the desk trying to explain this to you...I mean you are aware that any player in the history of magic, when playing against an Aggro deck has sided him out? I mean sure your mentality may work at your local store with a 10 person tourney where you are playing scrubs..but ANY serious tournament you take this to, and play Negator against any sort of aggro, will result in you getting laughed out of the place xD I DARE you to take this to Waterbury and play it against any aggro deck there *sponge bob laugh* I mean the whole point is to resolve him early...leaving you few permanents-thus making him EVEN MORE of a terrible card to play against aggro.
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shahravoid on: February 27, 2006, 11:58:34 am
BW is the wrong direction with this deck IMO. Traditional Zad played with Red, quick-yet efficient creatures + a bit of direct damage. I think this idea should be incorporated in this deck, either going 3 color, or maybe dropping black all together. Black creatures are..well...slow, especially Nantuko with that BB cc. You aren't attacking until turn 3 or 4 for the most part...just way too slow.

I mean I understand the whole point of Leyline...but you are throwing away consistency and speed in order to accomplish what Crypt can pretty much do-and better.

Green is another way you could go, heck Green's creatures are even quicker than those of Red: Ghazban Ogre, Jungle Lion, Wild Dogs, etc...and White has Savvy Lions, Isamaru, and Silver Knight (S-knight is better than you may think)..and actually we cant forget about the shadow dudes from Tempest. Green also provides the complimentary utility to white-and with these more efficient and effective colors, you can still pwn a deck with Crypt.
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Finding the Confidant deck on: February 27, 2006, 11:51:03 am
Gabe, I'm going to have to disagree with you actually. You seem to be advocating making the deck more "fish-like" and I strongly think that is the wrong way to go with this deck. FoW is not required because hes taking a different route, and it seems to be working so far.

I think making this deck more and more blue based is a bad idea, although Curiosity MAY work, I'm not sure, only playtesting will tell because having a backup for Confidant not resolving would be a good idea. Brainstorm is not needed unless you play FoW-since he isn't, its not needed. I cant stress enough how much I think that going more and more fish-like is horrible.

Tapwizards totally aren't needed...again Mage is sort of an indirect way of keeping the big man and other things off the table, and Swords is the direct way. Tapwizards are also going to be subpar in this deck IMO.

While I believe True Believer may not be needed maindeck, I feel Wretch is...I mean what deck does not use Will? Whenever Yawg's Will is played...broken stuff happens, and this bad boy prevents that. It also puts Welder offline, as well as Bazaar Aggro-ness.

To recap:
1. Going the Fish rout = bad FoW and Brainstorm would actually make the deck bad and lose its focus
2. True Believer is questionable, although I guess if you expect lots of combo, all the more power to you
3. Wretch IMO is a must for what you will encounter at any tournaments these days
4. Tap Wizards...see note 1.
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Mono Black on: February 26, 2006, 10:08:15 am
What I don't like about this deck is the fact that you are not casting a creature until turn 2 or 3 unless you have Dark Ritual (assuming if you had it that it wasn't Duressed away). This now means you will not be attacking until turn 3 or 4...by which you will probably be dead or in a lock nearing your ultimate demise.

If you decide you want to stick with mono black, In my opinion, you will need quicker creatures-its that simple. You put your opponents on no type of clock at all with this build (as far as creatures go). I mean smaller quicker creatures don't really put a Tier 1 deck on a clock either, but its a heck of a lot better off for you. Also, you may want to consider Mishras Factories too, I know that the only successful mono black decks Ive seen (mono black aggro's that is) ran which seemed to improve matchups just a wee bit.
14  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Finding the Confidant deck on: February 26, 2006, 10:03:35 am
"And BTW if you are adding BLACK do not even think not adding Necropotence because it says I win the game in 90% of the games when it hits the table..."

Hes not playing Dark Rituals....playing Necro in his decklist would be insanely terrible. Hes got a great balance going on, and his testing has showed splashing blue has not screwed with his ability to cast other spells...the blue splash for Mage is so sweet. While most of us players would see a blue splash and immediately say WHY NO FOW, its totally understandable the sense there isn't enough to pitch to FoW, but also, in this type of deck, FoW would just be a junk card in your hand most of the time anyways, FoW is used in a completely different deck style.

As I stated in your thread, Castigate is just bad, Duress is 1000x better, and playing 2 4-of discard spells would be atrocious in this deck, it has a perfect harmony. Also consider Castigate is a 2 drop...you have sooooooooo many better 2 drops in this deck.

"Phyrexian Negator (With enough permanents this guy is good even against aggro, if they attack you block and sac 2 things. then you hit back and cast some more permanents if you can. Sometimes things don't work out i agree but that is a risk you take with this big guy)"

ARE YOU SERIOUS...did you just say that Negator can be good against aggro? I don't care what the circumstance is...Negator is terrible against any aggro deck thats why its sided out in the aggro match up whenever its played. I mean...if you block with Negator..sure you can swing next turn, but you need to realize they are going to keep playing creatures..soon you will be writing yourself an IOU for permenants LoL Even the split second thought that Negator is even decent or playable against aggro is ludacris.
15  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Card discussion] 'Castigate' from guildpact on: February 26, 2006, 09:53:13 am
"You will understand that it is not about 'discard' but it is about disruption and control"

Uhh last I checked discard is used as a form of disruption...I mean lets put it this way: Castigate (or GV) will either resolve or it wont..if it resolved, its a heck of a lot better to take 2 cards than one.

"No offense but you have no idea how this deck works"

I most certainly understand how the deck "works"...and pointed out that it WONT "work" in todays meta. I mean look you are using Cursed Scroll..that alone should tell you this deck isn't going to be THAT competitive. You are including power cards in a suboptimal deck thats what bothers me. Cursed Scroll does nothing against any deck in todays meta...you talk about how its cheap and can be sac'ed to Negator..but I mean the card has no other use than that..there are SO many cards that can be played instead.

Now lets discuss the fact you have absolutely no game against combo...I mean I'm not trying to attack your deck, I just don't think you are seeing the major flaws that I am seeing. Also, I mean what the hell do you have to combat say RG aggro or anything as lighting fast?

I just don't see this deck being 1. Fast enough (fast as in keeping up good disruption and keeping steady/increasing pressure on the opponent) or 2. versatile enough to be competitive today Sad
16  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Card discussion] 'Castigate' from guildpact on: February 26, 2006, 08:35:24 am
Im gonna chime in with my own $.02

I personally think that this card is extremely subpar..WB..at sorcery speed..for one card. Uhh I have 2 words for you: Gerrard's Verdict. GV is like 1000x better than this card I ddon'teven think there is a need to state more.

Now, onto the topic of Shadow of a Doubt, II'm not too keen on it in this type of deck, Its the kind of card that belongs in a more Blue oriented deck, plus it ends up costing BB =/

Although I do feel discard is a powerful asset to anyone wanting to disrupt an opponent, I just want to remind you not to get too worked up over the idea, because there are no discards at instant speed, cards like brainstorm, mystical tutor, vamp, etc just laugh at discard. So as a note of caution, just be aware of these obstacles-don't be over confident in the discard disruption working 100% (although there IS land disruption too, but again there are no real ANSWERS to spells, which is the price of going blueless I guess).

If you want to go black, I'm going to highly suggest:
http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=27363.0
It’s the thread entitled “Finding the Confidant” that seems like the most optimum BW deck for this period in time.
17  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Finding the Confidant deck on: February 25, 2006, 03:57:30 pm
The deck seems pretty solid. I am a bit worried about Chalice for 2, as Vegeta discussed, however I mean its not totally un-dealable. First off, siding Vial in ofcourse will help solve the problem. There are also other factors to take into consideration when discussing Chalice though. First off, although this deck may not be INSANELY disruptive, it packs enough to be a nuissance, and force the opponent to play without mistakes. Pressure is being added not only on the hand, and mana base, but also the board via Kataki + True Believer.

I mean, the simple solution to Chalice for 2, which Vegeta seems to feel would be a GREAT problem would be Engineered Explosives/Abolish yes? Im not sure how I feel about the exclusion of Null Rod, but I mean again there is disruption of all sorts in this deck, and I think overall, Kataki may be better suited, atleast in this deck.
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Help with a Mono Black Tendrils deck on: February 25, 2006, 09:56:58 am
Mono black seems a bit strange to me, but I'm going to post ideas under the assumption that you want the deck to stay mono black. Your draw obviously is just atrocious with the decklist you are running, and reading the posts was making me slam my head on the desk until I got 3/4 down the page when finally someone suggested SKULLCLAMP. The addition of Skullclamp will rock your world. There are still a few problems with the deck however, primarily Chalice...you have no answer to it (which is why I would have advocated for a Green splash but again I wont get into that). Your ONLY hope to deal with chalice is hope you are playing first and play some discard unfortunately =/. I cant think of much more to say except Chalice will rape you every time. I mean yes, in theory you could play Kobbys, have them countered and Tendrils a few times but..lets be realistic, its not going to work.

This leaves you 2 possibilities: Either an eventual splash to Green (Oxidize, even Xantid Swarm (works nice with Clamp) or if you insist on keeping it mono black, a secondary creature kill (ie Negator). I also am going to suggest Restless Dreams (not sure if it was suggested already-its a great card in this deck. Death wish should just be cut, its unnecessary, and for a deck like this you simply need to win as soon as possible, and this card does all but that. Its mana cost is also insanely high for a deck like this. In my opinion, Culling of the Weak should not even be played, again you are shying from the point of the deck...win as soon as possible. I would play 2 Cullings MAX. Hmm its rather early in the morning here so thats all I can think of right now, if I think of any other ideas Ill definitely drop by again

Best of luck,
Kyle
