1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: A hard moral question on: March 16, 2006, 04:28:23 pm
I also walk around and watch people after my match is over. I never do it specifically to analyze their deck, but more to see how everyone is playing as a whole. Also, the odds of me playing these people isn't very good because I try not to watch games at the tables surrounding me. That and I'm no good at scouting anyways because I have the most horrible memory!

A little about me:

My name is Andrew, and seeing as this is my 10th post I am now a basic user at TMD!! I am 20 and I live next to Waterbury, Ct.

Magic history - I started playing Magic during Ice Age, but have only been playing Vintage competitively for under 1 year now. I went to the last Waterbury Open, but placed poorly due to a severe cold. As a rule I tend to play Red when playing casual, but competitively I play Dragon Combo (go ahead an laugh).

I am notorious for being cheap when it comes to buying cards, but as a result most of my slowly growing collection cost me nothing! Hopefully I will begin to collect some P9 within the next year.

I am on MWS all the time (my name is Harbinger) so I will be sure to see some of you around!

I would definitely pick up some Underground Seas and Bazaars. I mean, most decks can use 'em and what great trade material!

Mudshovel does rock some serious butt; however, I would have to say my favorite song is Beautiful Disaster. Gotta represent the 311. Talk about great lyrics, awsome dualing guitars, great beat, and most importantly..... it NEVER gets old!

WOW! I can't believe that they actually use it for PSA authentication and it is permanent! I wonder what other uses they could have for this type of tracking. I'm telling you, soon its gonna be little robots with camera's to take pictures of every card owner to help prevent theft!

I'll bet this is bogus, but believe it or not a lot of products are now thinking about using such a process. Things like designer clothes and stuff so you can verify that it is authentic and not a bootleg. I read it somewhere like PopSci (they may not actually be able to do it yet, but I know they used to be working on it).
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Its Seedtime! on: March 14, 2006, 10:52:47 pm
Now this may seem like a silly discussion, but I thought I might get some feedback on a card that I personally have never seen played in a tournament, but think that it may be useful. This card is Seedtime. For those of you who do not know the card here is a quick review:

Name:    Seedtime
Set & Rarity:    Judgment rare
Cost:    1 colorless 1G
Card Type:    Instant
Rules Text (Oracle):    Play Seedtime only during your turn.
Take an extra turn after this one if an opponent played a blue spell this turn.

Now to most players this would seem stupid, but hear me out. First of all this would be a card only to be played in a deck that runs green (i.e. Oath, Multicolored Dragon, etc.) and in a T1 environment. In T1 it is very common that a blue spell gets played during your turn by an opponent (either a counter spell or an end of turn brainstorm). Basically this card almost becomes a Time Walk, the only problem is that you need 2 open mana to play it. That being said, I don't think a lot of players would see it comming.

Basically my question is this: Is this card broken enough to survive in a T1 environment or are the restrictions that come along with it too much? Maybe this would be a good sideboard card against a control deck? I would love to hear what you might think even though this probably isn't the next Timewalk.

I myself have been pondering this question too, but to me it seems like it matters what type of deck you are playing against. For example, countering a Time Walk against a Fish player may not be as important as stopping a Stax deck. For the examples below I guess I will have to answer assuming you do not know what type of deck they are playing. Here are my thoughts:

Example 1: Don't counter for a few reasons. The first is the loss of card advantage (unless for some reason you do not need one of the cards in your hand). The more important part is that they may just play the time walk to draw a "better" card than they already have rather than doing a mulligan. I, for one, would not counter.

Example 2: I would counter. Getting the extra mana is always a big help, even though it is only 2 for 2. Also, if your opponent is tapped out (assuming they have more than 2 mana available) odds are they need the time walk draw, gain an extra turn, and put themselves in a better position (i.e. getting their combo off, gumming up the field, or otherwise).

Example 3: Assuming you have more blue cards in your hand to RFG with the FoW other than the mana drain, I think use the FoW. This will leave you the mana drain to use if they attempt to FoW your counter, giving you 5 mana to work with, or you can use the drain to stop whatever they might play next turn. Again, if they are using the time walk at this point in the game it is probably to cast something bigger next turn. Use the drain on that and enjoy the extra mana!

I hope this helps, and I really am interested in seeing what other people think. Here's another example i find interesting and maybe others can answer it.

Example 4: Your opponent plays Time Walk, you have only a FoW and your own Time Walk. Is it better to stop them from gaining an extra turn or better to get you own? I suppose it all depends on your hand at that time, but just thought I would put it out there. Good Luck!
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: About Dragon on: March 13, 2006, 09:59:25 pm
I have tested the Gorger deck MANY times without FOW and there is one thing I always encountered: getting my win countered. By having FOW you ensure that if you are going against a control player (or any player that has FOW) you can stop them from countering your win, or even your animates. I can't stress how often you will encounter this problem if you remove the FOW's from your deck. Hope this helps.
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Ancestral Recall Discussion on: March 13, 2006, 09:50:27 pm
I agree with a lot of what was stated above, but there is another situation where Ancestral first turn comes in handy, and that is with the Dragon combo. Often times I find myself with an OK mana base, the nessesary animates, and a win, but no means to get the dragon to the grave. Enter Ancestral Recall. With the draw 3 I can leave my hand at 8, end my turn, and discard the dragon. Next turn I put down more mana (mox or land) and animate for my win! The Recall is so essential in the opening hand of any deck, as noted in above posts, but I especially like it for its discard possibilities!
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Budget deck for a new vintage player on: March 13, 2006, 06:05:39 pm
Yeah, Fish would be a great starter deck. I would reccomend U/R Fish though because it CAN beat Goblins. Either use pyroclasm after they have over extended their deck, or simply use Grim Lavamancer to kill all of their important goblins. Oath it also good, but Dragon is faster so I don't recommend it. Hope that helps!
