Fantastic report!  For someone looking to pick up the deck do you (or really anyone) have recommendations for a good primer/article?

Something I mentioned awhile ago, but no one has addressed either on these forums or in the podcast, is that the unrestriction of Library makes sense to Steven and Kevin because (I think) they're focused on Blue and Workshops as the most relevant decks in Vintage.  If you only had those two decks, everything they say is true; Library is good in the mirror but bad in the Shop match, so it's a safe unrestrict.

Except that this isn't true.

Traditional blue decks (i.e. with tinker, tutors, vault, ect.) and workshops would both be worse off with libraries unrestriction.

Library is still a land so I'd much rather have library in my main deck over flusterstorms/missteps against workshops.  Also against lock out workshop hands seeing more cards instead of doing nothing with the mana is an extremely nice feature of the card.

In the blue versus blue match ups landstill, and other control variants, are already superior to traditional blue.  They then gain a larger advantage by having library unrestricted, not only becuase of strip effects, but also because the deck is reactive and can keep 7 cards in hand longer.

Library is not a bad card in any match up as long as its in the right deck.  Worst case scenario it forces your opponent to play extremely aggressive to prevent you from getting it online.

The landstill deck from the BoM top 8 didnt even run one LoA so not sure why unrestriction makes them better.

Chalice on 0 really keeps control of the Mox game. Maybe they will have 1 to 2 Moxe's out before a chalice hits board. Smoke Stack may not be necessary and probably really slow in this deck your correct metamoprh's swap will be useful. However crucible helps with the mana denial maybe add 3 expedition maps, the maps will help with finding the strip for the lock, finding the workshop/Tolarian A. to be okay with the orb in play. or finding the Rishandan Port to combo with the orb. The whole combo works as planned: the deck runs 12 sphere effects (4 Sphere of R, 2 Thorn, and 4 Golem, 1 Trin) my probability of drawing one of  these effects turn 1 is 75%. Hopefully after that i can land a chalice for 0 wait for them to be tapped out or force them with tangle wire (which ever comes first) than play the winter orb. while the orb is on board having a sphere effect and a port completely locks them out of the game. The only land that untaps to orb becomes tapped to port on their upkeep letting them drop one untapped land a turn that they can play from their hand. This will give me the opportunity to draw more threats and gain tempo on the match. Double sphere effect makes it almost impossible for them to play a spell

How are you reliably tapping their one land under winter orb?  Chalice shuts down your ability to put out moxen as well.

I'm very surprised that Thoughtseize was not included in Modern Masters.

That little black sorcery's price has been continually increasing. Does this mean that it will only continue to grow?

Probably until MM2 comes out although im hoping for Legacy Legends or Vintage Viables!

You guys should do the live casts for Vintage at BoM. This way, I can lend your power and win the tourney with Humans. Wink

I like how it was long, I watched it in 2 waves. Just saw it as 2 podcasts, nothing problematic about that.

So, you talked about Loa again, and on top used Cavern of Souls as a semi answer. Interesting, but the problem still remains, with full acceleration and access to cheap removal spells like Lightning Bolt, it is relatively easy to get rid of Thalia or Dark Confidant and still stay in range of the '7 cards in hand condition' to get more draws of Library. Misdirection and Mindbreak Trap are actually very strong against Abrupt Decay. They protect your crucible, a Decay target, for example.

That being said, I agree on a point; Not always would multiple library in hand be a good thing, or missing a colored land drop. But even one Sapphire/Ruby or Black Lotus change/swing that in favor of the Loa user. It is not hard to get ahead and stay ahead with a Loa, if the opponent didn't get a wasteland and you get a bolt (rather common isn't it?). So you guys think this should be allowed? A single land to take over the game very early on. I think another problem is, while a player is taking advantage of a Loa, the player is also building towards a Jace (because Loa also gives mana don't forget that) and once Jace is in play, plus the assumption you probably used some removal on their threats, while drawing cards, it becomes really hard to do anything really. It is NOT easy to fight a land, even as a wasteland deck, with so much potential power on it. It is unforgiving and extremely efficient in what it does if not taken care of. And even if you wasteland it (the second option to fight it, next to trying to play threats (which can easily be removed)), they could just play another one. Also if they get to use it before you wasteland, they just started the game with +1 card. Oh well, these are my 2 cents on this Loa matter.

On Aether Vial: The Cavern of Souls pretty much replaced Vial. Sure Vial still has its own advantages, but Cavern is such a boost, you get a land drop, the uncounterable effect, and this is pretty much enough. Vial can come online the next turn for Gorilla Shaman or Deathrite Shaman but it is nowere near the Cavern+Mox into 2cc Human bomb. The strenght of some of these creature decks running Caverns is to throw in a couple high quality cheap bears very early on and put the pressure on them. Vial doesn't follow this approach. And that brings me to the real issue, topdecking a vial after turn 2. It is still playable, don't get me wrong, but you get so much more mileage out of a turn 1 Vial. The difference with a later Vial is huge, and this offsets me. There are some exceptions to this though, against a Magus of the Moon deck for example, it could get you out of a lock. Or a Chalice for 2. But these are rather narrow circumstances.

I think in todays Vintage environment, LoA is no longer the Library of I Win.  With games so much quicker and compressed, the cost and tempo loss of missing colored land drops is pretty high.

1) Chicago

2) 1.5 hours at most

3) Anything proportional to number of players.  Would rather pay less for lower prizes

4) AC in summer, heating in winter!

5) 10 or so
