Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Dredge in 2016

I can see where you are coming from and I agree to a certain extent about larger events. Sullivan won the NYSE last year so I think the cat is out of the bag permanently now but that's just my opinion. One thing I have seen a lot of is that people are actually lowering the amount of dredge hate in favor of having more variety of kinds of hate. Decks that routinely played 4x cage plus 3x priest have turned into 2 rest in peace 2 cage 2priest, 1 needle. I think that is an interesting trend that should be taken into account when boarding.
This is the exact readon why i love Serenity so much right now. Even if they go Cage, RiP AND Needle. On the topic of Dredge being too slow, i've tried Sun Titan and Fatestitcher. Sun Titan is not in the yard when i want/need it (probably the same with a one-off Griseldaddy). Fatestitcher is a matter of opinion. If I want to play it, i would like at least 2 (see Sun Titan). But i would rather have the consisticy this deck has now. Going fast only matters against DPS and Belcher. But they can kill you on T1 or T2 anyways. If we're on the draw, making the deck go faster is moot. Hence i play maindeck (free) hate for them in the form of Leyline. Just give them a speedbumb for 1/2/3 turns. It's all Dredge needs to win. Not playing Dredge is wrong imho. You want to test diffrent match-ups. The Meta is still in flux, so get your Bazaars and test the diffrent new and old lists. A well prepared Vintageplayer will always pack enough Dredge hate. Especially going to a non-proxie event! I for one would like to know if i can beat a player through maximum hate. It gets you well prepared for all the rounds in a tournament. Just my $0.02

Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Dredge in 2016

So going into 2016, i noticed a few things last month(s):
1) Aggro Shops put MUD back on the map. 2) TPS is back. 3) U(g) Belcher is rising in popularity. 4) Since all of the above happened, the format has become faster. Therefor I see more Pyromancer and less Mentor. 5) Dredge is played less.
To start with 5); this means more people will run less graveyard hate in their sideboards.
This is a great time to play Dredge, if tuned well...
I think 2) can be handled with Leyline of the Void. It shuts off Dark Petition and Yawgmoth's Will. It's also still a great card in the mirror. To be on the safe side AND help with 3), I think I want Leyline of Sanctity as well.
4) Is actualy a good thing for Dredge, since 1/1's are smaller than Dredge's 2/2 Zombies.
This leaves me with 1), wich is easily handled by Serenity and Ingot Chewer.
The list I will be playing the next few months will look like this:
4 Bazaar of Baghdad 1 Dakmor Salvage 3 Mana Confluence 3 Petrified Field 4 Undiscovered Paradise
4 Bloodghast 1 Dragonlord Kolaghan 1 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite 4 Golgari Grave-Troll 2 Golgari Thug 3 Ichorid 4 Narcomoeba 4 Stinkweed Imp
4 Bridge from Below 4 Cabal Therapy 2 Dread Return 4 Leyline of Sanctity 4 Leyline of the Void 4 Serum Powder
//sideboard 4 Barbarian Ring 4 Ingot Chewer 1 Riftstone Portal 3 Serenity 3 Wispmare
I had to make room for 4 Leyline of Sanctity, that's why I don't run the full Thug/Salavge-Ichorid package, nor the full 4 Petrified Field.
I'm not a fan of Nature's Claim, since it loses to Mental Misstep. I don't want to run Misstep myself, but rather have more impactfull cards. Setenity helps against a big MUD board AND multiple hate cards on the board (Rest in Peace + Grafdigger's Cage comes to mind).
Against Oath, I think Leyline of Sanctity is better since it can't be Abrupt Decay'ed or countered, and shut's off Oath T1 on the draw as well.
Barbarian Ring is just great against Containment Priest and Yixlid Jailer, and helps against Pyromancer (and to some merit Mentor).
I didn't want to run fewer than 3 Petrified Field, but couldn't make room for it in the main.
I ran Sun Titan and 1-2 Fatesticher for speed, but 1 or 2 Leyline buyes enough time against TPS and Belcher to still win fast enough. This also gave me the option to drop 1 Mana Confluence and add a Riftstone Portal. It really helps to more reliably cast Wispmare and Serenity.
Enjoy your New Years Eve and may all your opening 7s contain a Bazaar (and a Leyline) in 2016!
EDIT: After some testing, I made a minor adjustmenst. I switched Riftstone Portal and the SB Petrifield Field.

Is just the next iteration of the new Grow list. Tokens, counters and the possibility to combo out. I've played the old list (pre-champs, so without the Probe-Therapy pack) and liked it a lot. This has Mentor and Swords to Plowshares in stead of Pyromancer and Ancient Grudge, plus a few tweaks. I like it, though Mentor being +1 cmc and cutting the off-colour Mox seems counterintuitive. Quite interested to hear thoughts and experiences!

It would be great if there was some kind of creature protecting land from legends or something. It would be great to have it searchable with scrying.
There is Sejiri Steppe. Though I think that will be beter with Crop Rotation, since it's an instant...

Thank you for the detailed explanation! ... my list has 7/6/9/10/6 WUBRG sources plus portal....
I only count 8 B... I'm fine cutting a thug, as if my ichorid get too hungry i will aggressively feed them to each other.
It's not the Ichorid food I'm worried about, more the +2 dredge (or rather -2 dredge on Salvage). But I can see the advantage Salvage makes for Bloodghast and our mana. What's your plan against the new Thirst for Knowledge Vault/Key decks (big blue / some city vault)? And vs Combo (Blue Belcher and TPS)? Just (try to) outrace them? I think 1 Ancient Grudge in the main might help against at least 3 of the afore mentioned decks, as well as being good against MUD. I don't like it in the side, because a) the side is lean and clean and b) i feel like having a mainboard option against those "oops I win!" combo's these 3 decks have. If you were to replace 1 card for Ancient Grudge, what would it be?

Not realy a sideboard question, but I saw the post-B&R list from mr. Brophy and couldn't quite comprehend some of the changes. Basically it was his Eternal Weekend list - FKZ, + Dragonlord -2 Mana Confluence, +1 Riftstone Portal, +1 Karakas -1 Thug, +1 Dakmor Salvage Sideboard: -4 Nature's Claim, +4 Serenity
Dragonlord has been discussed. Serenity and Riftstone Portal as well. But can someone tell me why change Thug for Salvage and why play Karakas?
Is Karakas for the Oath matchup (due to Serenity being worse in that matchup than Nature's Claim)? Or is it a hedge agains baby Jace? Or is it to bounce Dragonlord and/or Elesh Norn to protect them from Swords to Plowshares?
One other question I have is: Would it help to play 1 Maindeck Ancient Grudge as a hedge against Vault/Key oriented decks?

Dragonlord also gives haste the next turn (if there will be one). FKZ only gives your team haste once. He flies, so he's better vs (Magus of the) Moat.
@gkraigher: He does not prevent those cards from being played IF your opponent has a copy of it in his/her graveyard. And even than it will cost them 10 life, so they MIGHT be able to cast them and pay the life... Also note that is says CAST, so it won't trigger with something like Oath, Show and Tell or any other alternative way of putting said cards onto the battlefield.

This does not work well in Gush. 5 mana? And what would you even get?
In Gush Storm; Yawgmoth's Will or Tendrils of Agony most likely. With the usual 14 land, 5 moxen, lotus an gushbond, using it as your finisher wouldn't be that hard. Maybe add Sol Ring or even Crypt.

From the Mothership:
Bring to Light 3UG
Sorcery
Converge-Search yor library for a craeture, instant or sorcery with converted mana cost less than or equal to the number of colors of mana spent to cast ~, exile that card, then shuffle your library. You may cast that card without paying it's mana cost.
Maybe in a BUG Gushbond shell...

Another important quality of ring is that multiples synergize. Every dredge player has had hands with multiple removal spells and no colored mana source. A hand with 2 rings means 1 is live, and so is that chewer too. As soon as you draw a ring you have 11 other red sources in the deck to find, as opposed to 8 if we were playing any other card. Even for casting non-chewer hate, it still pays for spheres. Playing it over sudden shock also means that we can afford to trim fields against non-wasteland decks, as the deck doesn't need any colorless mana to cast hate.
Another advantage Ring has over Sudden Shock is you can dredge it to the yard and either Petrified Field it back, or in my case, Sun Titan it back. Ring also helps in casting Sun Titan against Containment Priest, although it still won't happen frequently. I can inmagine scenario's where you want to deal damage to a source, but your opponent has played Rest in Peace, Leyline, Tormod's and the like or even Trap and you wouldn't have Threshold. Sudden Shock doesn't have that problem. On the other hand I don't know many decks that play a combination of graveyard sweepers AND a creature you want to kill... Maybe Leyline & Jailer and RiP & Priest are the most common combinations... I guess my question is: Did any of you ever had a situation where you weren't able to activate Ring where you wanted/needed to?

Hi! My name is Anne Frits. I'm 32 years old and live in the Netherlands. I started playing Magic at the time of the Urza block and stopped after Apocalypse. Then rediscovered the game when Future Sight came out. It was the time of Flash and Meandeck Tendrils. It was also the time I started playing Vintage. At first I tried some unpowered combo-decks (wich didn't deliver). Then I decided to save money and acquire P9. Since then I've been playing TPS, East Coast Wins, Hatebears, Delver, Grow, Gushcombo, (Pitch) Burning Tendrils, Oath and now Gifts. So almost anything but Dredge and Workshop. I've been reading TMD since 2011, but never signed up. But hey, better late than never!
