Princess_Power: how do you board vs. DPS?

Storm decks are currently quite homogeneous. So they are unlikely to have Xathrid Swarm or Dark confidant post board (people played Confidant with Gush so they could play it in DPS imo). Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is pretty slow so its probably the next best cut. As for what to bring in, you definitely want both null rods. I also think you want the shattering spree. One spree gives you 6 good outs to defense grid (4 FOW, 1 pierce, 1 spree) and spree can sometimes take out multiple pieces of artifact mana. Wasteland is ok vs DPS. DPS is very short on card advantage so it hates trading resources. But wasteland is not super great since you can mana flood and they always have a basic swamp, and maybe a basic island post-board. Ingot chewer is a consideration post board as another anti-Defense grid measure. But chewer is significantly less powerful than Shattering Spree. (This suggests maybe I should run 2 spree, 3 chewers in the sideboard. Spree is worse than chewer vs shops but I would bring in two sprees vs DPS).

On the draw I would board:
-4 Lightning Bolt
+2 Null Rod
+1 Spree
+1 Wasteland

On the play I usually board:
-4 Lightning Bolt
-1 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy (you can leave in Jace if you expect them to be usually well prepared vs wasteland)
+2 Null Rod
+1 Spree
+2 Wasteland (if you leave in Jace only bring in 1 wasteland)

some thoughts:

-I don't like bringing in Grafdigger's cage v DPS. The card only stops yawgmoth will. Mentor doesn't have a fast clock so storm can often just go Dark Petition->Necro. And They can go off without Yawg will regardless, especially since they can get empty post board (though empty can lose to mentor depending on the board state).

-Even though you board out the bolts vs DPS having them maindeck really helps game1. And I think that game1 is actually your best game vs storm. Game1 you have four flusterstorm, 13 total counters and they don't have many defense grid. Storm gets more out of their sideboard than you do imo (Defense grid is a house and I have no dedicated storm hate since the sideboard is so tight). So to win the mu you really need to focus on winning game1.

-If the deck had green you could run ancient grudges over shattering spree. Ancient grude imo is good enough that you are happy to maindeck it. And with a grudge main and 1-2 in the board the storm mu would be much better. As you could easily pressure their artifact mana and have a great answer to Defense Grid. But this requires changing the deck pretty fundamentally.

-If you actually expect Xathrid swarm I would leave in  2 bolts. And if they have Swarm probably they don't have defense gird (is this true?). So I would board:

-2 bolt
+2 Null Rod

I thought the article was great overall. I really like the review of the choice to review the dredge deck. It was also cool of you to review my deck!

I want to explain some two card choices ou commented on. The reason I did not play any Pyroblasts is that Pyroblast cannot counter Dark Petition. If DPS did not exist I would have played 3 Flusterstorm and 2 Pyroblast (though this loses the spell pierce which can counter oath).

I actually play bolt over Swords because Bolt can go to the face. I find that there are many spots where you can try for a surprisingly fast kill with mentor and bolt helps with this (amsuingly this often requires countering your own spells which I did twice  during the tournament). Bolt also puts pressure on storm's life total which is important. And, as you pointed out, bolt takes out planeswalkers. Let me go mu by mu and compare bolt to swords:

-Mentor Mirror: I think bolt and swords are about equally good. (the downside of bolt is that you can fail to kill mentor)
-Blue Control: I think bolt is much better since it speeds up your clock. The only real benefit of Swords is that you can kill blightsteel. Though I am ok trying to beat tinker with counters.
-Storm: Bolt is much better. Swords does very little (though you can use it to pump mentor)
-Painter: Bolt is slightly better
-Artifact Combo (Tezz especially): Bolt is obviously much better.
-Dredge: Bolt vs Swords doesn't really matter. Mentor is very likely to lose game1 and you board out all the creature removal vs dredge. Though if they have depths Swords is much better.
-Shops: Swords is much better if they have foregemaster/Wurmcoil. Vs Ravager/Trisk shops bolt is still slightly worse since it can fail to kill a giant Ravager. Vs Smokestacks control bolt is slightly better.
-Oath: Swords is better. Though its closer than it looks.

So anyway I think its unclear what the right mix of swords/bolts is. But I wanted to make any "tweaks" I could to make the deck better vs Storm.

3  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Vintage Pillars: An Updated List on: February 01, 2016, 01:22:21 pm
If I had to name clusters I would use:

Gush (Mentor, Delver, Therapy Pyromancer)
Workshops  (all variants)
Bazaar (basically just dredge, but also some dark depths builds)
Oath of druids (Just oath obviously. But I think Oath is very different from other decks)
Mana Drain (Classic TimeVault Tinker control, Standstill)
Artifact Combo-Control (Painter, Tezzerett)
"Fish" (Bug Fish, Merfolk, etc)
Dark Ritual (Storm)

This leaves out the belcher deck though Sad. Maybe you could Belcher with Painter and Tezzerett. But Belcher is a very different deck. You could also plausibly lump all the thirst for knowledge decks together (this lump painter and "old school" Control. Though it leaves standstill with no where to go). Also this is at least 8 clusters which is significantly more than five.

I have gotten alot of use out of my MTGO cards. I am very pleased with my decision to buy into the format.

If you cut Mana Crypt does the deck have enough artifacts for Academy? And sadly if you cut tolarian+Crypt it seems alot harder to cast things like Inferno Titan. Though I magine this issue is not that hard to fix.

The decklsits for the top16 are up. There were:

Results:

4 Dredge Decks
Two decks had Sun titan+1/2 Fatesticher+flame Kin, 1 Just had Flame Kin, 1 had Dragonlord Kolaghan

3 Mentor Decks:
UWR Tokens, Miracles(3 SDT 3 Terminus 2 counterblance), Semi-Miracles (only 3 SDT 2 counterbalance 1 Terminus)

3 Shops Decks
Aggro (no Ravager), Ravager , Ensarning Brdige/Smokestacks

2 Dark Petition Storm (standard build)

1 "Odd Oath" (Targets are Void Winnower+Inferno Titan+Grisselbrand)

1 BUG Control (wins with Vault+Key, tinker Bot and 1 Jace)

1 Painter Servent

1 Tezzerator

=== analysis

Four Dredge decks in the top16 is quite alot of Dredge. Grafdigger's Cage was bugged until the morning of the event so maybe more Dredge players came out. Or maybe this was just a good day for Dredge. There were no Delver of Secrets in the top16 but that is maybe not shocking (though I would have expected 0-1). Also there were only two Young Pyromancer in the top16. Otherwise I think the top16 was pretty normal. besides dredge there were hree shops, two storms and a variety of different blue decks.

Though obviously its one event so there is alot of variance.
7  Eternal Formats / Ritual-Based Combo / Re: Sideboarding with TPS on: January 31, 2016, 12:04:36 am
I am not sure I would board out Necropotence vs Blue. Playing Rituals->Dark Petition->Necro is very strong early when Yawg will is not good. Vs mentor deifnitely play all the defense grids you have access to (4 in efros list). Defense grid is crushing vs mentor as they can usually only counter it with FOW. Vs shops I would bring in empty the warrens, warrens for 12+ goblins is often enough to win. And Vs shops you may not have time to set up for a tendrills kill.

Vs shops you take out all the disruption and put in mana and hurkyl's.

If you think an opponent will have a card that gives htem hex-proof (true-believer, leyline of santictity etc) make sure to bring in Empty the Warrens and to have a chain of vapor in your 60.

I just won the power 9 challenge playing this deck. The decklist is here:
http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/vintage-premier-2016-01-31

=== Swiss

W vs Dredge
W vs Storm
L vs Dredge
W vs Genesis Chamber
W vs Genesis Chamber
W vs Jeskai Delver/Tokens
W vs Storm

=== top8

W vs Painter Servent
W vs Bug Classic Control (Vault key + tinker, had thirst)
W vs Shops (porcelin legionnaire was in the deck)

===

The deck performed well. I did not miss the Dack Fayden's at all. The deck feels very strong vs Shops regardless of Dack (the sideboard is very heavy on shops hate).

I really suggest that one's dredge hate be Graf Cage and Rest in PEace. The deck's clock is not very fast. And the clock can be glacial when you need to mull toward your dredge hate. You really need hate that stops dredge cold (as long as ou can protect the cage/RIP). Things like Ravenous Trap/Tormod's crypt are not really good enough imo.
9  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: UWR Monastery Mentor on: December 21, 2015, 06:03:00 pm
Since Dig Got banned I figure it might be good to post a list. Here is what I have been running in the recent Daily Events:

Creatures 7
4 Monastery Mentor
2 Young Pyromancer
1 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

Misc 5
1 Time walk
4 Lightning Bolt

Cantrips 9
3 Gitaxian Probe
1 Brainstorm
4 Preordain
1 Ponder

Draw 7
1 Dig Through Time
1 Treasure Cruise
1 Ancestral Recall
4 Gush

Counters 12
4 Force of Will
4 Mental Misstep
3 Flusterstorm
1 Pyroblast (maybe it is best to run a 4th flusterstorm)

Mana 20:
1 Island
4 Scalding Tarn
3 Misty Rainforest
4 Volcanic Island
2 Tundra
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Strip Mine
1 Mox Pearl
1 Wasteland

Sideboard: (really wish I had room for a wear/tear?)
4 Ingot Chewer
3 Wasteland
3 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Rest in Peace
2 Null Rod
1 Shattering Spree

Match Ups:

Dredge: I think we are favored. 5 Sideboard cards is a decent amount and we can board into 5 strip effects.

Shops: Very Favorable. We can board out all our counters for 4 chewer, 1 shattering spree and 3 Wasteland. Vs versions soft to null rod we have 2 of those. The pre board games are not so unwinnable either.

Big Blue: Pretty even

Tokens/Delver: Even

Oath: Unfavorable. I would board down to about 4-5 win conditions here

Storm: Unfavorable. Defense grid is really a pain. Bringing in artifact destruction for defense grid can lead to dead draws. You need to clock storm without getting killed which is difficult. I like wasteland here are storm can have trouble if you trade off resources.

note: If you board in wastelands I would side out the 4th volcanic island.

Some thoughts:

-I would be happy to donate 20 event tickets as part of the prize for the first Sunday event

-I do not like the idea of running these at times that conflict with the daily events. Not everyone even knows this forum exists. It seems bad to do anything that will reduce the odds the vintage DEs fire.
11  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: UWR Monastery Mentor on: May 18, 2015, 01:23:39 pm
I have been playing daily events with URW Tokens. I placed 4-0 (I got paired down vs LSV in round4, the video is on CFB), 3-1, 3-1 so far which probably implies I got lucky! (though I was mega unlucky the event I won paid out DTK/FRF ...).

This is the "Shell" of Tokens I recommend:

Threats: 6
Mix of Young Pyromancer and Mentor
(I suggest at least 3 mentor)

Removal: 3
Mix of Lightning Bolt/Swords
(I like bolts since they can always go to the face and make a tokens)

Card Advantage: 10
1 Ancestral
1 Treasure Cruise
4 Dig Through Time
4 Gush

Cantrips+Time Walk: 6
1 Brainstorm
1 Time Walk
4 Preordain
(its ok to cut the ponder imo)

Counterspells: 13
4 FOW
4 Mental Misstep
3 Flusterstorm
2 Pyroblast
(3 fluster is a must imo. I would run 4 fluster but pyroblast kills delver+other less important stuff)

Mana: 18
1 Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Strip Mine
1 Island
2 Tundra
4 Volcanic Island
7 Fetchlands
(I really think with 4 gush you want 14 "islands" though 8 fetch/6targets is also ok. )

Total = 56
Dead cards vs shops = 9

Extra Stuff you can run: 4 slots
-Ponder
-Gitaxian Probe
-7th Token Creature
-One wasteland Main
-Lotus Petal Main
-4th removal spell (fire/ice, swords, bolt)
-Dack Fayden (I do not like this card very much. Though its cool with Gush)
-More Counters (4th Flusterstorm, 1 Mana drain, 1 misdirection, etc)
-Mystical Tutor
-1 Sensei's Diving Top

Sideboard Suggestions: 8
4 Ingot chewer (the best thin vs shops)
4 Wasteland - 3 Wasteland if one is in the main
(extra mana or killing a workshop is great, they help vs dredge and vs creature-less decks you can board these in over removal. 1-2 of these are great to board in on the play vs anything without tons of basics).

Final Thoughts:
-It is very hard to have a board plan for both Dredge and Oath. Since boarding for shops is not negotiable with 9 dead cards main. I will note I have seen very good people (Such as Steve Menendian) go very light on dredge hate.
-I think the best sideboard card for Oath is Wear/Tear or Clear. containment priest/Cage get blown up by Abrupt Decay. Though cage can buy you some time. I think you are better of trying to counter the Show and Tells and wear/tearing the oath. The side-board wastelands help alot here because you can blow up the Boseju.

I LOVE this deck, its so consistent. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk. Surely I have seen some of you on mtgo!
