1  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: Introduce Yourself on: September 25, 2015, 10:17:56 am
My name is John and I've been playing Magic since 1994.  My first cards were a starter deck of Revised and a couple of Antiquities booster packs.  I was hooked ever since the first game.

I purchased a collection in 1999 that had a complete set of Unlimited.  This sparked my interest in Type 1, which I had not played before but had looked at decklists for, assuming that I could not break in without the power 9.  Games of Type 1 were hard to find while I was in the military between 1999 and 2004.  I left the service and moved back to Texas in 2004 but couldn't find many games of vintage.  My first child was born in 2005 and, along with her, came expenses that I was not prepared for, so I decided to sell of some of my older sets (including my set of Unlimited) to help make up for the expenses.  I would occasionally glance at vintage reports, but decided that legacy was the format that I wanted to keep up with.

I went to Grand Prix New Jersey in 2014 because of my love of legacy, which is where I found out about Eternal Weekend.  It was too late to go to Eternal Weekend 2014, but I was determined to go to Eternal Weekend 2015.  I found the VSL videos shortly after season 1 ended, and I binge watched them over a weekend.  That did it.  I fell back in love with vintage and knew I had to start figuring out what I was going to play.

I only own two cards banned from budget decks (a Mox Jet and an Imperial Seal), so I decided that I wanted to try for the budget prizes.  I figured the best way of fighting against powered decks was to play an Oath deck.  Stephen Menendian was finishing his book about Gush and Bob Maher was playing a Gush deck that included Fastbond, Crucible of Worlds, and Zuran Orb (a favorite of mine since Ice Age), so I decided to make that a part of my deck.  I tinkered for a bit and came up with an Oath-Gush Storm list that I liked even though I knew it wasn't good.  I played the deck and ended up going 5-4-1 (aided by a couple of opponents who didn't show up), for 113th place, 6th among budget decks and I'm happy with those results, for now.
