1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Organic Formats - the success of Modern on: August 06, 2011, 07:58:28 pm
I just don't see how banning money cards makes any sense.  I agree it sucks to have to pony up 200 bucks for a playset of bob's.  However I played some standard without owning big jace, just baby jace.  People need to either stop wasting their money on random boosters and just save up for staples they know they will use OR they need to play a deck they can afford.

Sorry if I am bitter, but coming off somebody who has been playing since invasion I know I feel a sense of pride when I unlock the ability to play a new deck.  I like that my cards retain value.  Wizards is doing the right thing with the reserve list.  Having a format with a high barrier of entry but guaranteed appreciation of the value of your deck is good.  A format that rotates yearly is also good.  If only eternal or standard existed, the game would have died.  However, having both a format you can invest in and a format you keep up with is great for the game as people can choose to spend their money how they please.

I wish everybody owned a playset of every card so everyone could play what they wanted.  I'm sorry we can't all play the same deck, but if we did it would just be lame and stale.

You're thinking of Arabs.

Arabs have rabbits?

awful lot of faith being put in to brass man here, don't you all know how badly he folds under pressure?

Irrelevant!  beating up little kids from NY and Philly is no pressure at all!

I'll drive the van brassy, you lure them.

Is this fucking twilight bunny?

PS I hope to got you guys play.  I predict a 1-1-1 draw with the rabbits screwing up soly's sideboarding plans.

I am going to try to play ANT minus the power 9.  So I need to cut saph/jet/recall/lotus.

What do I replace them with?

+1 LED/1 Wheel/1 land/?
8  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: How on God's Green Earth is there not a World Cup Thread? on: June 24, 2010, 12:28:29 pm
Watching it in Japan. Soccer is not as exciting as MMA though.  Sad Sad Sad

But doesn't involve two oily guys spooning for 3 rounds....

Sure.  Soccer involves NOT trying to touch balls.

Except the goalie sees all the play.  PIMP!
9  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 16, 2010, 06:04:41 pm
He's not sanctioning this is he?

Nope
10  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 14, 2010, 10:09:24 pm
He will not change the format.  The same 4 people win week after week, and people complain.  Sad
Have you tried getting the people who complained initially to talk to him? If those who pushed for the change in the first place now admit that it made things even worse, that might carry weight.

Either way, sorry you got someone so shortsighted running your events.

The format is staying.  :-/.  I just don't want to have to play oath every week to do well.
11  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 14, 2010, 03:59:04 pm
How about asking him to set things back to how they were before, then trying to separately agree among the powered players to play unpowered lists every other week or somesuch? You might get some pushback from unpowered people only showing on the unpowered weeks (and vice versa), but it sounds to me like the current format is benefitting nobody. If people are still willing to play under what's happening currently, I don't forsee the alternative being any worse for them.

He will not change the format.  The same 4 people win week after week, and people complain.  Sad

Ok so my local store owner tried to solve the problem of the older guys crushing the newer players in vintage.  His fix was to ban the power 9 and then make it 0 proxy.

Did it work?

No.  In fact it is worse than previous because now they can't even proxy things like forces to stop us from playing whatever we have the cards for.
13  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 14, 2010, 01:42:40 am
Is it the vintage ban/restricted list?

otherwise id agree with serracollector and play some dark depths deck.   maybe splash green for goyfs or if you want to be really mean splash red for fling.

Basically take the current vintage restricted/banned list
-5 mox
-lotus
-time walk
-timetwister
-ancestral recall

I guess I can play the DD deck.
14  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 14, 2010, 01:09:53 am
Mono black with Hexmage/Depths combo, and helm/leyline combo.  Its still easily good without the mox jet and lotus.  Still got tutors and y will.

That does seem fun!

Could I include blue you think or strictly mono black?
15  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 14, 2010, 12:03:03 am
Maybe you can convince some people to invest in power? Smile

Did you read the thread?
16  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Vintage sorta metagame. on: June 13, 2010, 11:38:03 pm
I was hoping not to keep playing oath, it does get boring.  Any other ideas?

Ok so my local store owner tried to solve the problem of the older guys crushing the newer players in vintage.  His fix was to ban the power 9 and then make it 0 proxy.  Essentially I feel we are playing a bastardized legacy with skullclamp and oath.

I threw together a legacy dredge list by max mcall but it didn't do amazing.  The week before I played legacy MUD and it won.  My friend played counterbalance oath and won today.

What decks could I reliably put together to win there?

I do not own mishra's workshops/bazaars.

I do own 4 drains/4 force/32 duals/38 fetch/etc so building some stuff is not quite problematic.

What is a decent deck I can throw together for next sunday and do well?

Thanks, and if in wrong forum please move as I am getting used to the change,
18  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Ethics question on: June 08, 2010, 11:43:47 pm
Lets pretend time is running short in the round.  I am playing Control.  My opponent is playing a TPS variant.  He proceeds to say, show me a counter and I scoop.  I reveal some counter, and he proceeds to do something like cabal therapy away the named card and win.  Does the verbal agreement he stated mean anything in terms of a judge and/or penalties?
19  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Card-draw hate on: January 01, 2010, 03:29:53 am
Scholars' Exchange
 {W} {W}
Enchantment
Whenever a player would draw a card, each of his or her opponents draws a card instead.

This card would neuter vintage staples like Brainstorm, Ponder, Thirst for Knowledge, Bazaar of Baghdad.  As a bonus, an active Vault/Key no longer becomes an auto-win:  you must either be able to win with your current board/hand position, or you must risk a gambit of attempting to deck your opponent before he draws into an answer.  The extent of that risk could be greater if the appropriate tech is used.

Make it like chain and have it only apply after the first draw per turn.

What fun controlish decks exist that won't brutally destroy a newb infested metagame?

Fun combos?
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Coming back into magic! on: December 21, 2009, 03:49:29 pm
So it's been a good year since I've really played magic.

Liar!   I saw you at the Waterbury in March!

No, that wasn't me.  That was Oneofchas!

Yea I guess I forgot about me playing in that Waterbury.  Ok, aside that I have not played in a year...I think.
23  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Coming back into magic! on: December 20, 2009, 07:26:34 pm
Won today with elf combo.  It steamrolled everything, so I now need a more fun deck.  Maybe fastbond-crucible combo?
24  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Coming back into magic! on: December 19, 2009, 08:11:47 pm
I was thinking of playing something dumb like a bad version of belcher or something.  Or combo affinity.  Something funny.  Hermit druid is going to get owned by all the creature hate!
25  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Coming back into magic! on: December 18, 2009, 08:45:05 pm
Vroman's Oath (Vroath) is pretty hot, and I can imagine would be decent without power

I also don't have the time vault for that deck.  I was hoping not to piss people off, and making it so they can't play spells seem a tad dick.

I don't have any expensive stuff at all aside loa/4 drain.
26  Eternal Formats / Creative / Coming back into magic! on: December 18, 2009, 07:36:25 pm
So it's been a good year since I've really played magic.  My store now does type 1 with power nine being banned and it is zero proxies.  So seeing as how I only have a sapphire, I am down with that.  The store isn't very competitive so I'd like to poll and see if there is a slightly tier 2 deck that would be fun to play (I have drains, fetches, duals etc).  I am also up to revive any dead archtypes.

Travis's retirement is like Farve's.  He says he is going but what we really know is going to happen is that he will come back as the best drain control player of 2010.

Just callin it.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TO DAVE FEINSTEIN!!!! on: August 02, 2009, 04:11:57 pm
To Dave Feinstein!

9 feet tall he was...

The only measurement worth noting about him.

jk.

Rock on and remember this tournament isn't a fucking drug cartel.
29  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Anyone hiring? on: July 31, 2009, 04:48:27 pm
Muahaha I'm officially Dutch-jacking this topic....

First of all, I would like to Introduce you guys to the newest member of Team R&D, that's right you guys are hearing it here first we're building the talent to make an impact and hopefully one day make sure Meandeck doesn't keep on dominating World Champs... because hey... somebody has got to put up a fight...

I thought Dutch-Jacking was where you run up to a little kid and steal his legos.  Now I'm confused.
30  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: The Cave Open 25th of July (Norway, budget, in a cave!) on: July 30, 2009, 11:06:21 pm
Vintage... in a cave... followed by bonfire-cooked beef on wooden sticks?

This might be the coolest thing I've ever seen on TMD.

I wonder if I can talk Mike into moving the next Blue Bell to Crystal Cave...

No wonder people assume magic players dwell in a cave.
