@LotusHead I will ask Dan to write a report or at least get back to you. I will give some brief info on the deck. It was the first time he had ever picked up the deck and first time he played it before. That and the fact that half of the deck was mine Anyway, he did solid and seemed to face all sorts of decks. While talking during the day he said the trouble he was running into was te fish type stuff. I will have him do some detailed write up.

Top 8: Dan with Oath Salvagers
My teammate Pete Florkoski was playing this today so we talked about the deck on the 30 minute card ride to Waterbury. Hopefully Dan is playing a poor version of Oath Salvagers, and he is.
Game 1: He wins the die roll and wins turn one. Again… if I had gone first I could’ve dazed his lotus. Game 2: He gives me juicy spirit tokens (4 orchards) and still has his combo in his deck because he doesn’t know I’m playing fish so when I get all my lock cards down he can’t do anything. He has a Salvager on the table holding off my men, (stupid salvager is a 2/4 wtf). I have arcane lab on the table but no null rod yet. I finally get null rod down. Then flying man goes the distance. Game 3: I TOPDECK LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER. I drop a series of men while he hardcasts a DSC (using drain mana). I chump block so I go down to one life. I rip swords off the top and get rid of DSC.
After I chump all I have left is a Javelineer but he casts an Oath. This is the first time today where I use a javelin counter. Icatian Javelineers commits suicide.
We play draw go because he has oath on the table. He finally gets an orchard which I waste after he gives me a token. I pass on my turn and he pulls out DSC. I have arcane lab and null rod in play. I have rushing river and debate what to do. Hit the token and DSC? Hit DSC and oath and drop the men in my hand along with standstill to hope to draw into answers? I Rushing River DSC and Oath. He has no counter. It goes to my turn and I topdeck a Meddling Mage which I play naming oath. I go on to win.
This is funny. You say he is playing the bad verison and proceed to seem like you are the best person in the world. When it all comes down to you did TopDeck like a mother and that was the ONLY reason you won this match. I would consider yourself grateful. I mean you say the deck is bad and the think you are aewsome cause of topdecking??? Congrats on the win but keep in mind luck was the reason you won this tourny.

Yeah, the tourny was realy sweet. The people there were nice and it was run very well. I would be happy to go back. Props to me and my team members of Power Posse for putting all 3 of us in the Top 8.
The bigest thing I would like to point out was one thing with this tourny. It only cost 10 BUCKS. This is the coolest thing ever and the guy who ran the tournament was not only a nice guy but the fact that thew entry was only 10 bucks was huge. There is no reason the world shouldn't have been here. I would post a report but they pretty much covered it.

This card reminds me a lot of Haunting Echoes. I am not totally sure which is better but I like how this only costs one black and you get to remove a card that doesn't have to be in the yard. Only time will tell how playable this is.

I didn't mind the aspect of the sorcery since it never seemed to make me lose tempo. I can see it being a problem but the needed boost is just so nice. I like how it also doesn't take that much life away from you. The cards eemed to work very well and the sorcery part was not a big deal.
When I played against the Tendrils with Mirror Universe I was a little confused. First game he got a first turn Universe without using a Lotus. He proceded to draw crap while I topdeck shaman and then angel comes and goes the distance.
Amazingly the CC of the Firewalker never seemed to be a problem. It never interfeared with anything either. Hmm, reminds me of the Whispers.

First of I would like to say that I am not calling my deck better than the original 4cc. This is a deck I chose to run to test out some card choices and how they ended up doing.
This past weekend I attended Waterbury(aka best tournies ever). I chose to run 4cc which I have been using for some time now. Obviously there have been some changes mentioned as of late like having Tinker and Collossus in the deck. I chose to think about the Skeletal Scryings and how well they have been treating me. It is a good card but I was looking for something different. I wanted an unusual deck that would keep my opponent thinking what my game plan was. I came to the conclusion of Night's Whisper. I thought what the hell and I should see what the card could do. I had been testing against fish and workshop decks. I actually found the Whisper more consistant and helpful. Here is the list that I ran at Waterbury. Oh and if it matters I went 5-3 and came in 44th.
Mana: 1 Island 2 Underground Sea 2 Volcanic Island 4 Tundra 1 Library of Alexandria 2 City of Brass 1 Strip Mine 3 Wasteland 4 Flooded Strand 1 Sol Ring 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Pearl
Creatures: 3 Exalted Angel 2 Gorilla Shaman
Protection: 4 Force of Will 4 Mana Drain
Draw: 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Fact or Fiction 3 Nights Whisper 4 Brainstorm
Utility: 1 Crucible of Worlds 1 Time Walk 1 Mystical Tutor 2 Cunning Wish 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Balance 2 Fire/Ice 2 Swords to Plowshares
Sideboard: 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Crucible of Worlds 1 Suq'At Firewalker 1 Disenchant 1 Blue Elemental Blast 3 Red Elemental Blast 1 Energy Flux 1 Fire/Ice 2 Rack and Ruin 1 Skeletal Scrying 1 Coffin Purge 1 Mind Twist
Ok, I know you are thinking WTF. There are definetly some weird choices. Like most people I expected a lot of fish and slaver. I played against 1 Slaver and no fish all day. So much for deck testing. During the tournament I played against GAT(with Tinker/Colossus), Slaver, Tendrils(w/Mirror Universe), FCG, 4cc(with Scrying), RG Beats, Tendrils, and 1 more that won't come to mind.
Night's Whisper--- This card seemes like it was begging to be played. I thought it would be cool to switch it with Skeletal Scrying which turned out to be pretty cool. The fast efficent draw seemed to prove well in a metagame of aggro based decks. I never felt that I wanted a Scrying. I am not sure if I would permanently switch this with Scrying but it definetly posted results I was pleased with.
No Decree--- After testing I felt thta decree just wasn't cutting it. I wasn't drawing it enough and was playing it as a 1 of. I decided to cut it and through the course of the day there were only 1 or 2 times when it would have been of use. I like the maindeck a lot more without it.
Mind Twist in the Board--- I had expected a lot of fish and slaver as stated so I thought that the Mind Twist would be a wrong call. Thus I moved it to the sideboard for the Mirror Match. I almost feel as if it doesn't deserve a maindeck slot anymore. It is very powerful but right now I only want it against the Mirror.
2 Maindeck Fire/Ice--- Again another metagane call gone wrong. Although i felt this card was very useful during the day. I like it in the maindeck but I believe it should only be played as a 1 of. The 2 seemed a bit extreme, even in testing.
Suq'Ata Firewalker??? Yes I did play this card just to see the reaction on peoples faces. This card single handedly won me 2 matches. I love this and much just play it cause it is so darn cool. (I understand I am about to be critized)
Skeletal Scrying in the bard--- I do like having this in the board for stuff like the mirror matches. Also it is nice to wish for when Exalted is beating face. I do like this in the board over the maindeck.
I do feel this deck provided the results I wanted. It seemed solid and Night's Whisper is a card that deserves more credit. I took a lot of critizism from people for playing what I did. I tried to explain my reasoning to some but others wouldn't listen. I am glad that some people actually found my deck interesting and were considering testing the idea themselves. I am not one who likes net decking so this is good for a odd card choice. Please discuss.
Thank You, Johnstown713
P.S. - Thanks to Ray for running another sweet tourny and for my opponents for being cool.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Crucible and Gemstone Mine?
|
on: September 07, 2004, 10:18:41 am

The problem with that is you have to be running a lot of each card. City of Brass is a reliable card and the life loss is usually counteracted by the positive effect it gives you. But if you go into the Gemstone Mine - Crucible effect then you can have some dead cards. Crucible tends not to stay in play that long due to it beinbg an artifact but if it does manage to stay than there are more useful cards with it, such as Wasteland and Strip Mine. If you play Gemstone and don't draw Crucible then you eventually have a dead land card. I don't think Gemstone Mine is needed and the manabase seems good enough.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Squirrel Opposition viable again ?
|
on: September 03, 2004, 10:54:39 am

I will be bringing SquirrelCraft to the 2 Day tournament on the 25-26. It will be so much fun and then we will see what Squirrels are made of.
The deck doesn't need Opposition. It runs just fine without Opposition. The card seems like overkill. If you are setting up for a combo then it doesn't seem right to all of a sudden try and become a control deck. If I were to run it then it would only be a 1-of or 2-of. That is all.
My deck right now is super techy so it will remain disclosed until after the tournament.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Which is more broken, Crucible or Wasteland?
|
on: August 31, 2004, 08:10:03 pm
|

Wasteland has been around for a longer time so you can't really call it broken. Crucible on the other hand is a new addition and seems to have way to much synergy with Wasteland. If I had to I would say Crucible is the broken one only I don't think restriction worthy. Wateland kept the metagame heathly while Crucible distorts it. Crucible is the one that ruins everything not Wasteland.
