Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: CounterGoblins(?!) dominates field of Stax in Sandusky, OH

By the way, the OSU/UM game is on November 18th, meaning November 11th is in the clear for some NW Ohio Card slinging. If I can get a hold of Randall Pandos (yeah, good job winning!) or Jerry or Mark, I'll try to make it up to that one.
Alright, that means I can go. Yeah, it would be great if you could get them to go. I had a lotta fun last time playing jerry, and talking to mark.

November 11 is the day of the OSU/UM football game. I wasn't aware that it was legal to hold other events in Ohio on that day. I know things in Ann Arbor will come to a total screeching halt as the city (and a good 1/3 of the state of Michigan) stop to watch the game.
You can take that to mean that I likely won't make that date. It's just as well, since I don't have a deck anyway.
You're kidding right? Dang, now I have a problem. Maybe we can get them to put the game on a tv or the radio or something. I know a lot of magic players in ohio that love to watch ohio state.

I think I might proxie this up and test it. It looks like it could be decent. I have to agree about the academy though, I just don't see how much use it could be.

It seems like if you play Wonder and just kill them, you don't have to worry about knocking out their attacker as they never get to attack...
After thinking about it, Wonder might be worth a try... but only if I also used Nether Shadow. Basically, something has to be around to chump block the dangerous stuff, and Nether Shadows are easy to pop in for that. Aggro tries to be fast, and I can't always be assured of being able to dish out 20 faster than they can. Wonder has the advantage of relying on Island, of course, which means I am less vulnerable to Wasteland and Strip Mine. With Scrubland/Valor, one Waste and the benefit is gone. Basically, any attempt to turn the tides on aggro is going to be a rough hill to climb, and turning the tides on Goblins is especially difficult. I actually played this deck for a while. It wasn't bad deck to play as it was my first vintage deck, but from my experinces you just want to beat them first. If you clog up your deck with stuff that may not be needed, then you don't have room for the good stuff.

I gotta tell you that I like playing this deck. Here is the list I played at the meandeck open last week: 4 Bazaar of Baghdad 4 City of Brass 4 Gemstone Mine 2 Underground Sea 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 4 Chalice of the Void 4 Ichorid 4 Ashen Ghoul 4 Stinkweed Imp 4 Golgari Grave-Troll 4 Putrid Imp 4 Brainstorm 4 Cabal Therapy 1 Crop Rotation 1 Vamp Tutor 1 Imperial Seal 3 Golgari Thug 4 Leyline of the Void 1 Ancestral Recall
This build did do quit well despite all the mistakes that I made. I ended up going 2-3 in rounds beating out a u/w fish, and a 2 land belcher deck. I lost to a dragon deck(piloted by the wonderfull Doug Lynn), were I could have done something the second game to win but for some reason I just sat on my hand. Round 3 brought me a oath deck that barely won game one, and tinkered out Collosus(forgive all my misspellings please), and by the time I found a chain of vapor I was at 9 and he was holding muddle the mixtures. But, two other people took this build to the same tourny, one made a bunch of mistakes( in case steven didn't tell this guy went first, played the leyline for free and steven got him to say he was done), and the other was very close to top 8. He had to win 2-0 or 2-1 and they ended up drawing, which irronicley allowed the other person who came with us, Davey, to make top 8. But, this deck does show potential and without all the mistakes we made, I think we could have gotten it done. I can't wait till the next one.

Speaking with tin_mox(Dave) today, he reassured me that leyline was total utter garbage against grim long, and I agree. The deck is truley unbeatable unless piloted be an incompetent player. Or you just get the jankiest hand ever.

I must admit, that when It comes to competitve vintage play I am a noob. But I have been trying to better myself. I am constantly on the web either here or at SCG. I am friends with tin_mox, for those of you who know him, he is really the reason that I have taken off in this format. From what I have seen and my own personal oppoinion Grim long is a great deck. It can win against anything, but if you let your bad plays get to you, and can't concentrate enough to play the deck. Like you guys have been saying, only the player loses the game not the deck. I would one day like to play in a vintage tourny, preferably SCG P9 one day, and I would like to try this deck out. Also, why can't Star City have P9 tournys in Ohio. I know about a lot of vintage players that live in ohio. Ohh well now I am rambling, thanks for your time. ~ Mr. 2000~ Hi, welcome to TMD!
