1  Eternal Formats / Midwest U.S. / Astro City Games ||Full Set of Revised|| STANDARD Event July 24th on: June 28, 2010, 12:42:42 pm
Greetings Mana Drain.  I understand this is a Standard tournament, but with the prizes being eternally driven, I found it proper to post here in one of the more viewed boards.  If I am out of line, I apologize.  I did not want this event to be mixed up in dead boards.  Magic:2011 will be legal for this event.

Location:
Astro City Games
9801 Lawrence Ave
Schiller Park, IL 60176
www.astrocitygames.com
astrocitygames@gmail.com
847.671.5024

Date:
July 24th (Saturday)

Time:
Doors open at 11 for Registration
Registration Closes at 12:15
Round 1 Begins at 12:30

Format:
Standard Constructed. This tournament will have the following sets legal for use: Shards of Alara Block, Zendikar Block, Magic:2010, Magic:2011.

Swiss rounds according to attendance, with a cut to single elimination Top 8. Minimum attendance of 16 players for the Revised set to be awarded to 1st place.

Cost:
$25 Day of Event
$20 Pre-Registration. Pre-Registration closes July 21st.

This event may be limited in space!  To ensure your spot in the tournament, pre-register or contact the store with your intentions of attending.  If the interest is large enough to facilitate a larger venue, that is always an option.  Decklists will be required for this tournament and we will be running it at the Competitive REL.  If there is any question you may have, please contact the store for your answers.

If it is your first time to Astro City, it can be a little tricky to find your first time out.  Parking is available behind the building in the small parking lot and in the small grass field, as well as street parking surrounding the back of the building.

If you will be taking public transportation, the closest train from the city would be the Rosemont CTA station on the Blue Line, or if you are on the Metra, it is the Schiller Park stop.  Please contact the store if you would like to be picked up from the Rosemont CTA as it is about a 1.5 mile walk, and we would be happy to find transportation for you.

I hope to see lots of people come out for this amazing prize and hopefully we'll see some great competition for this event!

3  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Xtreme Games Monthly Vintage results 1-17-10 on: February 08, 2010, 11:14:07 am
One decision means you get one minute for that decision.  If I play an EOT Gifts, I get one minute for my choices.  If I play Tezzeret's search ability, I get one minute.  Do players often take longer, especially with complicated gamestates?  Of course.  Is it entirely reasonable for an opponent to ask you to play faster?  Yes, if you're taking more time than you are allotted.  When I'm playing incompetently (for example, at the last Xtreme Games tournament) I frequently take longer, sometimes much longer, because I have no idea what I'm doing or what goal I'm working toward, especially with a deck I'm unfamiliar with.

I have heard this line over and over in real life and I hate to tell you, but the magical 1-minute decision is not true.  The base-line for slow play is playing at a pace that would deny a player an equal share of the match time.  In this case, if a player is taking 1 minute to make each decision possible, that player is actually very likely to get slow play warnings and potential upgrades if decisions aren't made timely.  As with all rules, there are moments where a tough decision is to be made and players are allowed to take some extra time, but taking 1 minute to make a decision because one feels they are entitled that one minute is treading on a line that is bad for competitive Magic.

9  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Chicago Area Legacy Invitational Series Astro City Games on: January 07, 2010, 08:14:24 pm
Ladies and Gentlemen... Boys and Girls... here it is:

Astro City Games Legacy Invitational

Over the course of five weeks, Invitational Qualifiers will be held in order to allow people to accumulate points to earn their spot in the Invitational Tournament on 03/28/2010.  Each of these qualifiers will be run very similarly to a Grand Prix Trial.  They are small self sustained tournaments with their own prize support and award points based on finish to qualify for the Invitational.

The details are in the links that are just below this paragraph.  The best part of this tournament series is that the final Invitational will have 100% cash prizes!  That's right, cash prizes.  To keep it simple, 30% of all the entry fees that come in through the qualifiers will be put directly into the prize support for the Invitational.  With that being said, the Qualifiers will have prize pools that pay out in Store Credit.

I would urge anyone that lives in the area to come on out and enjoy some amazing Legacy tournaments.  The competition is always great and it's a great chance to flex some eternal muscle.

www.astrocitygames.com for full details!

As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at cboomer@gmail.com or through the store by calling (847) 671-5024.

This is the third in a series of great monthly tournaments which puts the power of choice in the hands of the players!  You Pick the Prize has been an increasingly successful format which allows the winners to pick what they want to win from a large pool of Magic singles from the entirety of MTG's past.

Our last tournament gave away an Italian Moat, 3x Eng and 1x Itl Chain Lightning, and more for the first/second split.  Prizes extend throughout the top 8.

This prize pool is looking to have highlights such as Force of Wills, Wastelands, Chains of Meph, and Revised Duals.  Come out and have a great day of Legacy with some of the best competition in the Midwest.

At least I played a "Real" Deck this time, albeit poorly played.  I have found a spark for playing with lots of restricted cards Smile

I will have the next tournament for Astro City posted soon.  It was nice getting out to the old XG shop before you guys move.  Good luck with the new place.

The prize support was kept as is because I am a man of my word.  If I had an option I would have pulled the recall and played for something lower but a promised prize support is promised prize support.  Packed with this knowledge, people should come out to my events so that I can keep running them.  Ask the people that showed up to this event, there as much more space to play and had we had 20 people it would not have been crowded at all.

I am looking at late March/Early April for my next event.  Good luck to anyone at the GP.

Gentlemen,

The event was a great time, even with only a 7 player turnout and I will be hosting more of them in the future, as long as the weekends aren't packed with over 9000 events.

Some interesting moments from this tournament....

Round 2 vs Issac....

Game 3 we are tied 1-1... Issac is at one life w/ Necro in play.  He tinkers for Time Vault w/ Mana for activation through Voltaic Key... With no cards in hand takes a lot of turns and I bring up the fact that he actually can't kill me with no win condition.  So that was a fun draw.

Round 1...

Rusty - "Bad plays Rusty now I can't play this frogmite...."  said after casting Master of Etherium w/ Black Lotus, getting it countered, and only have 3 artifacts in play.
Chris - "Welcome to Frown Town... Population Rusty."
